REVIEWS OF The Boombox IN Rhode Island

Eder Lisboa

What a nice place with nice people, good enviroment. I just loved it. If you want some fun, this place is for you.

Paul Nicholson

I like this place but I can never really stay there longer than 15-20 mins before I want to shoot myself in the face with a sawed off shotgun.

Patricia Gushee

It's a fun lounge to hang with friends or family. Especially with karaoke being in there.

Brian Dutremble

This place is packed enough that a bouncer is required, so reserving one of their private rooms isn't a bad idea. I would suggest not cramming more than the recommended 10 people into the smaller room as there doesn't seem to be any AC in there and it gets _steamy_. The song selection is pretty standard (I was hoping for some more interesting stuff, given how hip everyone says the place is, but there was a decent selection for sure).

Alexandria Cavallaro

Bottle of cava and a collection of good friends means a good, good time!

Gary Goldberg

We had a lot of fun at the boom box, love the fact that they have sapporo king cans of beer served ice cold. I would suggest going with a decent group and getting a private room.

Rebecca Zub

Rented rooms for karaoke here multiple times with a group of friends and it is so worth it! Sake, Japanese beer, horribly awesome videos with most of the songs, you can't go wrong.

Rebecca Shannon

Great atmosphere! The individual rooms are small, but comfortable. Good selection of music. It can get expensive depending how long you booked the room for, and if it runs over.

Kimberly Renovales

i like the music and the people that were in the lounge they had drinks there that you can buy and you can choose the type of song you want to sing.

Khanh Le

Good drinks and the bartenders are very nice. However if you dont have a private room this is a mess. I put in for a song, paid the dollar, waited n waited... finally I asked about it and they never put the song in. The place is packed with not nearly enough seating. The sake based drinks are awesome and I enjoy the fact that they sell pocky st the bar. However I find it to be a one drink, one song (if they remember) kinda place... not a place for a night out.

Lamont Berry

Friendly atmosphere

Rayanny Thornton

It's so full all the time, but you can get the room and have fun with yours friends almost like private party. Preparing your voce because they have a big selection of songs.

Lets start by saying karaoke is not my thing. It is my husband's and seeing him happy makes me happy. Boombox is a cool little lounge that offers five private rooms and one communal lounge area. The private rooms range in price depending on size, and are all reasonably priced. Drinks are cheap enough and it's only a buck a song. In the communal room you have to sit through the good, the bad, and the ugly. With a good crowd it's a really fun night. We came a little after 11pm and didn't have to pay a cover.

Nicholas Garza

Where you're in a group and want to rent a private room or just 1-2 people wanting to hang out in the lounge, the Boom box is a pretty fun place up have out! Limited drink selection but friendly staff, and tons of songs to choose from

Artie Cruz

I sang a song about my ex and kissed a goth girl

I have never been a fan of the crowd here. It is an uncomfortable mix of traveling businessmen and college freshmen. There are two other bars on the same floor, but that doesnt mean that you can get a drink from all three. Boombox suffers a paltry selection of drinks and very slow service. Standing at their bar, credit card in hand, I watched five people whom arrived after me get served. Giving up, I went to Faust to grab a bottled beer only to be followed into the hallway and told I couldn't carry my beer between the rooms. I handed the beer back to them and left. I have witnessed people going between rooms with a drink numerous times. This policy is not posted or explained to guests. This place is a noisy, hot waste of time.

stephanie Cunha

Fun night out with friends....if you rent one of the private rooms

Jenifer Rodrigues

This was such a fun time and no pressure to stand on a stage to sing in front of everyone.

Randy Caprio

Great place overall, however, as it is in providence, things tend to get pretty rowdy and out of control some nights. The drinks aren't bad but they certainly aren't the best I've ever had and they can be pretty pricey so maybe pregame prior if you're mic shy. If you're planning on checking it out Wednesdays are the slow nights where not a lot of people show up and their primetime is generally around 9 until close. All in all, it's mellow feel and pretty relaxed environment almost always lead to a fun night of karaoke with strangers.

alexandrea Rave

Good atmosphere great people lots of music to choose from to sing karaoke

My favorite karaoke bar in Providence. Best place to have some sake or Japanese beer. In the back of the Dean hotel.

Hard to find but fun

Octavio Gomez

Get the private room! It's so much more fun for and it gets crowded outside of those

Matt Aldred

Great bartender, fun room, everybody has a good time, and they have sake! You can even reserve one of the five private karaoke rooms in the back if you have a party or a group.

Bryan Monaghan

I love this place. Always opt for a private room, though they're a little small for what they claim to hold (more than 8 people in a 10-person room, and it gets crowded. Good beer selection, massive selection of songs. I've never had a bad time at The Boombox.

Greater Than Zero

Drinks are all way too sweet and it's not always the greatest crowd, but the staff is great and private karaoke rooms are always a good time.

John Miller

Had a good time its a hipster type bar alot of skinny jeans

Lynn Withrow

Matt Hawkes

I was staying at The Dean, and if I was at a loose end I would pop in to The Boom Box to watch people 'sing' a few tunes...was a giggle, and passed some time if I wasn't sleepy. The staff were friendly, and getting a drink didn't take that long at all despite the place being busy.

Magic Man

Heather Montag

Way too packed, only one bartender who also put in the songs off tips to actually get the song in. Soooo not worth it for karaoke. Drinks were good tho.

Jimmy Salas Porras

John Valletta

Fun and relaxing place with great staff a little small but if you rent a room for the night can comfortably sit up to 20 people with reasonable rates. Endless selection of music.

Derek Rossi

Great atmosphere and friendly patrons, only problem is it gets a bit cramped.

Brian J. McGuirk

Derek Bates

A fun little mouse hole that definitely must have been a brothel back in the day. Oh, also, hipster alert on high.

Honda Prelude

Awesome place to hang out

Steve R.

Dope spot.....beer service to the rooms would be nice

Joan Maria

I've been to this place 800 times and I will never get tired of it.. Definitely hands down the best karaoke in Providence, maybe even Rhode Island... The imported beers, the Narragansetts, and the down to earth karaoke style ( no stage, so it feels like your singing with everyone i.e. less pressure.) Just all around a good time.

Angel Jaquez

Sam D'Agostino

Always love karaoke here. The private rooms are great!

Nicole Murdoch

Best karaoke in town, private rooms available. Japanese style karaoke lounge. Only beer, wine and saki. But the attached hotel also has a cocktail bar, something for everyone.

Derek Nonnenmacher

Shane Fairbairn

Wow. Just, wow. Fun and no-frills. Friendly staff.

oscar libreros

If I could give this place 0 stars I would . I made a reservation paid for parking just to be told that they sold our room when we got there

Brendan Fernandes

Kind of small but cozy, if it's really packed you'll get a song in by an hour.

Becca Fayan Guilfoyle

Small joint for karaoke and saké lovers. Great atmosphere.

Updated review: Katerina relayed my complaint to Ethan, the owner. He just called and said he'd received my feedback and has taken the bathroom posters down! I'm thankful to have been heard and that I that I didn't have to justify myself! By both him and Katerina. However, sexually explicit decorations remain laminated on the bar surface, hang above the bar, as well as on their new T-shirt uniforms. My review will stand until everything is taken down. Money is spent on renovations all the time. The counter could be covered with an opaque laminate, and completed in a few days. The cloth above the bar can be removed in an hour. New shirts can be ordered for $300. We're facing all these sexual scandals right now - from Harvey Weinstein to Dr. Larry Nassar - because people rolled their eyes at small things like these / people have been too scared to blow things out of proportion. I'm not. Many things are gray in life, but sexual objectification is a black and white issue. It's wrong. I truly did have a great experience, and would look forward to having more people - families and friends - experience this without having to be burdened by unwanted sexual exposure and be too uncomfortable to speak up. I'm confident that Ethan and staff will be able to make the right call and move forward. But in the end it is their business, all I can leave is this review. ----------------------------- Original review: The karaoke and staff are friendly. Katerina is very hospitable and the location is great. My rating is low because of Boombox's objectifying art. They say they have decorated the establishment with Asian karaoke lounges in mind....however, erotic/pornographic Asian film posters are hung up in the bathroom and laminated onto the bar surface. It's 2018. With movements like #metoo and with sexual assault victims speaking out, I'm surprised this design choice was made. And as an Asian American woman, I find this all extremely distasteful, objectifying, and furthering the exotification of Asian women. I had a great time with friends, and we brought a large group. But if the decoration doesn't change, I'm going to stop visiting and will encourage my friends to stop too. Don't support an establishment that makes light of the objectification of women.

Not only is there pretty much no crowd to sing to but they also charge you a dollar per song to sing! You can rent private rooms for singing but if you're there to sing in front of a crowd this isn't the place for you.

James Field

Normally this place is great but this night they had some bartenders that skipped songs that were already paid for after patrons left even though there were other patrons willing and wanting to sing them and I watched them move a song to next for a patron they knew who walked in super late. Also the bartenders are at work and should not be allowed to drink or sing songs on the clock.

I recently went to this karaoke bar -- was impressed with it being well manicured, well decorated, and overall had a good time until I walked into the bathroom ...... and there were just all these images pasted onto the walls of half naked Japanese women. As an asian american woman I felt this was completely crass and incredibly objectifying of my heritage and body. I called the owner asking him if he would consider removing it. He replied that this was "vintage" art he bought in Japan. I told him I would give him a week to think about it... When he finally called back and said he had reached out to a "friend in his network who is a female, an Asian American, and a writer who was raised in Japan and said it was fine." I asked if this friend would be willing to speak directly to me.... and he said he wasn't comfortable providing this information or even asking if she would be open to it. I asked for his racial background and he replied "I don't see how this is relevant." Ultimately said that yes it was pornography in a way and that because he's the owner he has the ultimate say. You'd think that if a member of a ethnicity was uncomfortable with some pictures you could just take it down and be done with it just as a common courtesy to another human being.

Can get crowded but is a good spot

Great karaoke, great drinks, great times!

Vast selection of songs

Not a great selection of alcoholic beverages only beers and sake shots. Way too crowded!

For the service and room you get it's a great place. Only downside was that they had nothing but English songs on deck. We were hoping to sing some Japanese stuff too, but had fun regardless!

I was just there tonight 5/18/2019, had a decent time. However the private room I was in was extremely cold. I asked the bartender who was the one that brought me to the room, if the air could be turned off. Her answer to my yes or no question was, “Once you move around you won’t be cold.” Anyway my sister and I carried on singing until it was time for us to leave. We went to the bar so I could give them back the microphones and get my card. Waited for about 10 minutes just to get my card. While I was signing the check a man came up to me and was trying to get me to sing, I said no thanks. He proceeded to get in my face as I said please leave me alone. All the whole none of the staff is helping. I put up my hands to keep him from my face (while my sister is trying to get him to leave me be) as he calls me names and none of the staff is helping. Honestly there were people watching and still none of the staff could be bothered. Then he said something I will not repeat and I pushed his face away from mine. Then finally one of his friends came to get this clearly drunk person away from me, still the staff did nothing. I finished signing the bill and of course I gave no tip. I have been to boombox before and I’ve had a great time but the bar is small only about six customers can fit around so for the 2 bartenders and other staff members to not help in situations like that it’s disgraceful. It’s not too much to ask to feel safe. They need to train the staff better. To pay attention, not over serve the customers. Obviously they aren’t responsible for what another human being does, but with better training they could have help defuse the situation.

Lucy Noel

Not what I expected

Lari

Would give it 5 stars but the bartender needs some customer service training. I know drugs when I see them & let me just say ...drugs. Please get a new bartender, please. I'm actually writing this review from the bar on halloween

great time watching people either soar on a musical high or cringing from pitchy vocals. could use some more space and tables. but great lounge. reserve a room for $40/hr and sing for free before 7pm.

Robyn Dubois

Great concept

Al Iannucci

Favorite place for karaoke hands down. It's a sake bar though so drink selection is limited but they have enough mixed drinks, wine and beer for most people to find something they like. Not a long wait between songs if you like to sing a lot.

Ivanichka Racheva

Iron Sheep

Fun place, gets a little rowdy near the end of the night. I'd definitely recommend splitting the cost of a room with everyone else then finishing the night off somewhere else.

B Sim

Booked a room from 5-630pm. It's my birthday looking forward to a little fun with my family. Waited outside the locked doors for 30 min. No one was there to open to the store. Called twice and no answer. Unacceptable lack of service. Never coming back. Drive all the way from Mass too. Guess I should take my business to the Boston bars instead. Thanks for a disappointing birthday.

Lauren Coberly

On the door of this "karaoke bar" it says "Quiet, guests sleeping in hotel above". You walk into this tiny red lit room with red couches to the right and a small bar to the left. The bar only had sake-based drinks (not many and not good) and ginger beer, a small one sided drink menu. The bartender was a lady with blonde hair, and almost ignored my group. My friend stood at the bar waiting to get a drink while this bar tender smiled at the small groups that would walk in, ask questions then leave! She knew we were there and ignored us, never smiled once at us or was nice at all. No one was in the whole place, and if you wanted to do karaoke you had to buy 10 songs, as there is a $10 minimum to do karaoke and each song is $1.00. You also have to know the number your song is in this massive book, and barely any songs were recognizable or easy to find. A group walked in and apparently they reserved a room in the back, so again the bartender ignored us to serve the VIP group that rented out a room in the back. I do not suggest this place. Oh, and the drinks are overpriced, not worth the nasty taste.

Kinze Chhoy

A decent karaoke place. Private rooms are nice if you can get one. If you aren't shy you can sing in front of everyone for $1 a song. They have a decent selection of cold Japanese sake and beers to choose from as well.

Edwin Medina

Very cozy and great atmosphere... Great karaoke spot

Nicole Tillery

Great if you want to overpay and be scrutinized/spied on by the bartender

Brandon Fournier

Karaoke fun.

Jay Shapiro

Fun place. Karaoke was a blast.

KaraZmatik Z

Love this place, it's small and gets pretty packed, so I recommend getting there early or booking a private room if your planning on doing a lot of karaoke

robert dais

What a blast! Boombox is an authentically fun, tiny Karaoke joint that's hard to find but well worth the trouble! Its got a grungey dive bar vibe with red light district overtones so don't wear your Sunday best but crowd is lively and diverse with lots of crowd pleasing group singalongs. Great way to start an evening out belting out bad 80's songs with friends or people you hope to never see again. Either way, I'll be back!

Viviana Gonzalez

Awesome place for a night of fun! Consider renting a private room.

Marisha Parker

Nice broad song selection, the private rooms are nice with decent soundproofing, and there's a good selection of sake to help ease into the karaoke.

Christian V.

Best place for karaoke in Providence, maybe even RI! It does get packed on the weekends but that just adds to the fun of watching (or singing, if you're brave/intoxicated enough). There's a huge selection of songs to choose from and even an app to look up songs. Each song you submit is $1 but only after 9pm (so try to get there before 9pm and have some free fun. The drinks are well-made and delicious; I recommend the Little Red Corvette and the Sake Bombs.

Nick Deubert

Can be a good time, but can also be very loud and annoying in main room, but that's to be expected with kareoke I suppose.

Alan Lafontaine

Tiny main room. Its like 14x14. Too small a venue for some of the "powerful" vocalists.

Heather Waite

missironmouse

Rudest, nasty, bar tender i’ve ever seen. She needs a new job.

We had a great time at boombox, until our interaction with the woman backing the bar. She was so rude to our party. She was practically yelling at us like we were children. We won't be returning. It's a shame because we had so much fun, but I definitely don't want to pay to be mistreated by an over eager hipster.

A R

So much fun! Boombox is one of the most unique places in Providence. Set in an old strip club it is one of the best holes in the wall in Providence! We have a TON of fun renting a private room. Just wish they would have a slightly bigger drink selection

Amy Atwood

Add drinks other than sake and beer, please.

Nicole Morford

So cool!! Awes9me bartenders with some great tunes to wail!!

Josue C

Karaoke till you drop

Mike W.

Very inviting and charming! Great song selection, a lil thrown off by the $1 a song but not a bad price for a little classic entertainment!
