Amazing atmosphere, talkative and friendly staff, great venue for small (quality) shows, and great drinks served in an immaculate and classy-but-casual setting. Literally could not improve. The only word of caution: don't expect a quiet conversation on a night with live music. Definitely always expect a good time, however!

"Saloon" is a very good way to describe this bar. It's dark, but elegant. It's quiet, though they often have live local music too. It's not prissy or trying to hard to be anything other than a great place to go have a drink for a good price, while escaping the bros at the many other surrounding bars.

The bouncer tonight took a beer out of my friends hand and threw it on the ground. He lost his temper and acted way out of line. The worst bar in all of boise! No hospitality! This was the bar I came to for my first ever drink at 21....

I had my first experience at Pengilly's last night. The bouncer and a friend were talking near the door and it wasn't obvious that either of them were bouncers. I was confused because they were chatting away like other patrons. The level of authority was not clear. Once it became clear that he was in fact the bouncer, I started to hand my ID over and said "I'm sorry, you didn't look like the bouncer!" The loud atmosphere and my initial confusion resulted in misunderstanding and I was told I couldn't be there because I had "a bad attitude". He was arrogant, condescending and ill mannered. He really enjoys power. Yikes.

This is one of my favorite bars for a night out on the town in Boise! My first visit was on a Thursday night featuring the Frim Fram Four, and it was magical. The atmosphere is absolutely gorgeous and dramatic. I have been back many times. I am only dropping it to four stars because I think the drinks could use a little work. There is no drink menu, and the bartender has never known how to make my drink so I recommend sticking with well known drinks or beer. With such a fabulous decor sense and great bands, I’d love to see some old school cocktails added to the mix!

it's always live music and open guitar to play on Mondays and usually about every night pengilly's has a band that plays music so if you like music and drinks and a good group and friendly atmosphere this hands down is one of the best bars in Boise and they have a smoking Lounge out back it's legit

I love this place. Classic bar, comfortable, good service and good music. Only problem - there isn't any food, not even simple snacks to buy. How can you drink beer, etc without any food. Get some easy things on a list - would draw more people.

We arrived at open mic night early with all of our gear and a group of 11 people. We watched the regulars play for 3 hours and watched names falsely being picked out of the bucket for people they knew. We accepted that we wouldn’t get to play and that things weren’t ran honestly. We left and we won’t be back.

Customer service was horrible. My group and I waited at least 10 minutes before the bartender even looked our way and we were ignored 3 times. She even seemed super crabby when talking to us and the birthday shot she gave me was absolutely horrid. Not a great first impression of this bar.

Went there with a friend and friend was discriminated against. Unnecessary force and homophobic slander from mangement. Spit at me and threw friends beer at him. Used aggressive slurs to remove individuals from premises. Will never go back and never have experienced such negative attitude

Pengilly's is my favorite bar. Its got a old school vibe to it. Also check out there retro cash register if you get a chance its super cool looking. Also they have a pool table that isn't trashed with straight Q sticks. They also have swing dancing on Thursday nights what is a blast to participate in !

New bartender called my South Carolina ID fake (said it was too flimsy? ), and wouldn't let me drink even after showing him my social security card and voter registration card to prove it was me. I actually liked this bar last time I went when I visited in December, the live music is awesome, but with bartenders like that..? I was with a party of 4, we'd clearly already been drinking, and two of us had IDS he accepted. Oh well, I guess I'll take my money elsewhere from now on...

I work at a local hotel downtown. And anytime guest ask for a suggestion to get a drink, I send them to pengillys and they all come back loving it. It's my personal favorite bar in town. Don't ever change!

What a horrible place to go. I walked in with my father late last night to grab a quick drink. While we stood at the bar to order, this drunk old man comes up to my right side and starts slapping me on my broken right hand (which has a cast on it), belligerently going off on me about how I was carrying a bottle of soda from Pie Hole. So I asked him what his problem was and why he insisted on slapping my cast and he yells "I don't give a f*** about your broken hand while he waved his pool stick at us as if he wanted to fight. Then unbelievably the bartender and the door guy told US to leave. I couldn't believe it. I still can't. Apparently they cater to the low life's who spend their nights there getting drunk every day of the week and have no respect whatsoever for anyone else. I've never seen anything like this I'm still amazed at how we were treated just because we weren't "regulars." Do yourself a favor and don't bother going here unless you're in the mood to be treated horribly.
