Great place and it's free!!
A very neat free museum to check out sometime. Well worth a stop to check it out in person. Shows the State of Wisconsin involvements in US Armed Conflicts and Wars. Starting with The US Civil War through The War On Terror. You can also ask for a handheld audio guide that gives extra audio excerpts. There are models, firearms, videos, displays, and other war memorabilia to look at. From all the eras featured. Great stories to read about the soldiers from Wisconsin and the battles they took part in. It will take you a few hours to see everything if take your time. But you can also breeze through and still enjoy it. Completely free but they accept donations and have a neat gift shop as well.
Very nice little museum and the lady named Ellen at the front desk was very nice and helpful
Great little place packed with lots of unique and important pieces of our military past. Goes over many different wars and direct effects on Wisconsin. Even if you are not from Wisconsin, very interesting place. Free to get in, small in size. fully accessible for individuals of all capacities. We went as a large school group and they even provided info pages and scavenger hunt type fill ins to keep the kids involved and digging deeper. Nice little gift shop had war related items to all branches of the military and all price points.
This is a must see if you are in the area, the whole staff are soooo knowledgeable of all in this museum and very friendly. The items on display are second to none. Saw 4 medal of Honor receipts in one place heart breaking stories of real American Hero's! Go see this place if you get the chance, won't be disappointed.
Very interesting and informative
Very educating experience
A great place to visit when in Madison. Make sure to check out the Iron Brigade coming through the Antietam corn field.
Great displays for no cost!
This is a really awesome museum! A must see if you ever go to Madison. It's a little small, but it's a really neat place!
I loved this place! My grandfather was a veteran and I got a chance to see the mesume through his eyes. I loved my grandfather dearly and this just made me even closer to him. Just because he has passed this is a great place to feel like I shared his days of the military with him. I urge you to go and support this place! Thank you to all who support and work here!
Great place.
Wonderful museum - even better gift shop!
Interesting little place,free admission
Well worth the visit, especially if you are interested in Wisconsin history and/or military history and the U.S.'s position in the world. One of the best aspects of the museum is the personal stories told by the veterans themselves, especially the Vietnam exhibit.
Great FREE place. Two very large rooms. Worth the time. Staff very friendly and feel dedicated to their jobs.
It was great to be able to see all the different wars and the information on so many different items a from each war. My kids loved the pariscope
Very impressive visual displays and lots of information about America's military history and Wisconsin's involvement.
Good stuff.
Wonderful! I loved this place, great attention to detail and a visual learning experience.
Fascinating museum with elaborate full size diaramas of all the American wars / periods rich with many authentic artifacts. A wonderful educational experience, most heartily recommended !
A gem in Downtown Madison a great place to see Wisconsin's military history!
Well put together museum and FREE
Always interesting, job well done!
Really nice place.
I love this place. I got there absolutely accidentally but this US Military historic site is amazing.
Small, but informative. Nicely laid out.
Love the new exhibit about behind the trenches.
This was a very well put together museum. Free too.
I wasn't expecting too much - as a visitor from out of country, but I was surprised at the high quality of the exhibits. Everything was well done and effectively presented. i'd recommend it to anyone.
Very nice museum very well done just wish it wasn't in a building with such high real estate value I don't believe this is the best use of the taxpayers money. I also believe they should be charging amission
Nice museum
My kids like this museum. They really put a lot into the exhibits and some interesting tidbits on WI's role in different wars. There's even some military vehicles. Especially great because it's free (accepting donations of course).
A cool place to see old equipment. Theres a lot of cool equipment and firearms to see here, but you won't learn a ton unless you specifically try to take you've seen and find out more on your own. Limited information for the amount of material items. This is a better stop for a historian than a civilian
The Wisconsin Veterans Museum, much like the State Historical Museum, has a gift shop and a minimum recommended donation. The museum spans only one floor in comparison to the other museum, and has many historical displays that tell the tale of certain war time events and people. At the time of my visit over 10 years ago, it had a functioning periscope that could be used to view the capital. There were no public bathrooms when Ivisited at the time 10+ years ago, but does have wheelchair access.
If you are downtown you have to stop in. It's free and I learn something every time I go.
Go see it. You'll like it. Short walkthrough but it can engulf you.
It is a great place for Wisconsin Veterans to visit.
What a hidden gem of a museum! I had no idea this little spot even existed until we spotted it while at the Taste of Madison. The museum itself is small (2-3 large sized rooms), and admission is free, making this an awesome spot to kill an hour if you're in the capital area.
Nice experience, very informative, would include with capital tour. Watch out on parking they have really increased prices around the square there
I have lived here since 1997 and had never been here. As a military veteran, I am very pleasantly surprised to find such an awesome collection of items and display of so much information pertaining to so many wars. Definitely an impressive set-up despite being limited on space. Admission is free, but donations are welcomed. Tour is self-guided and goes in a clock-wise manner around the room. Museum is on the square so you'll have to park in a nearby ramp. Pickney street or the Carroll street ramps are probably your closest options.
Great museum. My kids enjoyed the exhibits. Best part it's free.
The Wisconsin Veterans Museum is small, but it is well laid out and informative, and not to mention, the exhibits are of top quality. With displays that are heavily on the Civil War to the Gulf War, the museum shows Wisconsin’s roles in the U.S. military. A slow walking tour with stops to read the descriptions of the displays takes about an hour or so. If you have kids, it may take more time.
Free museum. We take our son here once a year.
You provide to my husband who is a vet. We are thankful for the doctors, nurses, and the staff for making. ALL of his needs met.
Great place to spend a rain day.
This museum was great. I wish we had taken a guided tour as one was finishing up. In the last 5 minutes we learned an interesting thing about the cannon where you first start. This is a good place to take kids to learn more about the sacrifices made by those who came before us. I do have a suggestion. I am a Gold Star Mom. My son was a Ranger killed in Operation Just Cause. He was the only one from Wisconsin. It would be nice to mention the ones killed in those conflicts. My other son was Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield, it was good to see you have a part dedicated to the War on Terror. This museum is a must see.
Very nice, free museum. Nice collection!!
This place is so awesome! They have incredibly detailed displays of every war in American history. If you are into history and you're in Madison you have to stop here, and to make it even better it's free!
In was interesting the American perspective of the history
One of the best museums anywhere.
Great museum. Great for kids and adults alike. Stop in if your in the area, you won't be disappointed.
Real cool museum, very well done!
One of my favorite museum's in the Midwest. It's filled with cool information and lots of things to see and touch. Best of all it's free and right in the capitol square. A must see. Don't miss this important historical monument to those who sacrificed.
Great free museum to visit. Wonderful displays which portray a chronological order of the wars and people of Wisconsin people who fought in them for our freedom.
Very interesting and free museum!
Don't let the seemingly small size deter you. There is a lot of history packed into this museum. From the civil war to desert storm they've got stories and artifacts. Also it's free with donations accepted so a great cheap date or family experience.
Good displays and history. And free..
Totally awesome! Very knowledgable!
Awesome. Go see it
Go early they close at 4:30 but the rude staff will push you at as quickly as they can. Excellent Museum with real artifacts from our great nations history. However, the staff is terribly rude and rushed me out of there despite having 10 minutes they were pushy and ran me out of there at five minutes till. I recommend they hire some real Veterans to work at this place so that they will have some respect for other Veterans who care deeply about our nation's history.
Very nice place, lots of knowledge-FREE-but you need to donate. Great gift shop-good prices for a museum especially
Free for Vets, good displays from several wars and good prices on souvenirs.
Great small museum dedicated to Wisconsin's veterans
Such a great little museum. Definitely a must see if you are visiting the downtown area.
Awesome museum, very friendly staff!
Great museum the amount of information and stories they have gives everyone a little better understanding of our veterans. They have many artifacts and stories from every major conflict I would recommend this museum for a family or anyone spending time in the Madison area.
Small but very cool.
Awesome history
This was amazing. We found a connection with our family from WWII.
Very, very impressed & a fitting honor to all those that served in our nations military. Wish we had a facility here in Chicago like yours. Great job & thank y'all. Respectfully George R Gandara Sgt. (Ret.) ILARNG
Awesome place to see the past
It was good educational. Wish it was bigger.

Very informational and very detail
Very interesting and detailed exhibits.
I was really impressed with thier exhibits! I have already recommended it to some of my friends#
Interesting museum with history and artifacts from the Civil War up through WWII. There was also a very interesting temporary exhibit with sketches and artwork from a veteran stationed in the South Pacific in WWII. Very interesting and cool to walk through.
Great place and must to see
Great historical display that brings history back to life.
Very nice historical site
Called in here while waiting for a bus back in 2007, great set-up very friendly guides and lots of information. Also a section on Australian and Wisconsin troops fighting together in The New Guinea campaign. Made me very proud of both our countries.
Great life-size panoramas and a lot of information... Well worth the effort to see.
Such a great place to spend an hour or so reviewing the great artifacts. It's really well done and free everyday.
Great museum! Lots of information and many displays for the area available. We had a very good visit today with our boy scout troop.
Enjoyed the history
It was a really cool museum but stop being so feminist the battle probably had 2 women in it and they talked about those two disproportionally and the men who served got little acknowledgment but overall cool place its free i would recommend a stop by if your close.
I highly recommend visiting. Very well done.
Nice collection of veteran wars
I enjoyed the museum!
Outstanding collection, displays and educational stations.
Nice displays of artifacts in fairly small museum. I enjoyed the temporary WWI propoganda display.
Great tour! Learn something new every time I go!
Very well presented displays.
Excellent museum capturing information and actual artifacts from our most recent conflicts.sections and rooms move chronologically, displaying it in a way that makes it real and memorable in tribute to the sacrifice made by our heroic men and women in uniform.great for all ages.
It was free! Great displays but small museum.
They have lots of old war memorabilia that is really cool to look at.
It was very teaching, and interesting, and their models were so real life like
So much history. Beautiful array of firearms and weaponry. A must see!
Lovely place
Great service best historical museum ever in Dane county
Good scenes from different wars,
A must see in Madison.
Very informative, great place to take older kids to gain some knowledge on Wisconsin's history.
Very informative. Takes you on a well organized trip through time and offers the players in each event the respect they deserve.
Its a point of attraction for those who really care about the history. This is a unique Defence museum of the US DoD. The museum have incorporated the facts and figures of the Civil War and the role played by the Wisconsin Armed division. It has nicely placed models and statues of the war cites from that era. The museum also have a good collection of artifacts, role of the US army , airforce and navy with Video displays for WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, Korean War, Gulf War and cold war. Must visit for histirians and students anyday.
It was allright
Great place to visit. Free to the public.
Very well laid out. Lots of unknown information about our state's contributions.
Very cool!! Not some old stuffy museum.. pleasantly surprised. Cool old relics
Excellent, thank you so much! My sons loved it!
Always a great place to visit. I take everyone who visits Madison to this museum. Well done, clean, and just a great museum.
Only donation. Otherwise free. Smaller than other free museums, but so much packed into those few rooms that we spent quite a bit of time and teens really enjoyed it.
Great place with real history exhibits
Very interesting history, and fairly cool collection. Had a good time, especially considering it's a free museum.
an outstanding museum, stunning like recreations on display and an overall powerful experience you should not let pass - the staff up front is top notch professional, accomadating and kind
Staff was very nice during my sister's 4th grade school trip. They showed lots of patience even when dealing with over 60 ten year olds.
Unbelievable experience
Free and good
This stop offered a very interesting, educational experience for my family. You can choose to focus on a specific war or travel through history and see the evolution of guns, equipment, and even planes are on exhibit. Well worth the visit with multiple generations.
It was very educational and informative. It’s great to see the sacrifices paid on our behalf.
Really good please to go.
Lots of displays and wonderful history
Exceptionally progressive for a veterans museum, good special lecture series and other programming
One is the best free museums I've ever been too. It's larger than you think just entering. It covers a lot of information and different wars as well. If you go in chronological order, it's cool too see how far they went in making this a good experience. Well worth the stop if you have 30 minutes to a couple hours.
Helpful staff. Great educational resource
Awesome place grate knowledge of the past wars and you get to see the different weaponry of country's
Free museum that had some cool exhibits to kill time in. The world war 2 exhibit was moving
Excellent pieces of history exhibited. Really enjoyed the time spent in Museum.
Well cared for museum with some interactive features. Staff seems passionate about their work.
Good place to visit
Awesome place dedicated to Wisconsin history
I took my younger kids when we were downtown. Their dad is a Veteran so they were able to get a better understanding of what it meant to be in a war. I love how admission is free! The staff was welcoming and kind.
A great place with very nice displays and very informative signage. Employees are knowledgeable and helpful.
Great artifacts, great stories-wish people talking during groups had Mic!!
Great free museum on first floor. Takes a little over an hour to see and read the exhibits. Lots of interesting personal items and stories of Wisconsin veterans.
Very informative and affordable family friendly fun!
Great place lots of history and exibits good info only small discrepancies with displays
Well arranged exhibits help the visitor get an idea of military history as experienced by troops.
Nice Pac for war facts.
Great exhibits, wonderful experience, very well put together and detailed exhibits.
Free museum honoring and recognizing Wisconsin's veterans. Great artifacts on display from weapons to uniforms. Some outstanding full sized dioramas depicting various eras in Wisconsin's military past. The gift shop has some nice items that would be difficult to find elsewhere, as well as a vast collection of books for sale. An hour or two would be well spent. I'd love to see the museum relocate to a larger location to display more of what must be a vast collection.
This place was amazing! Just great what they have done in the little space they had. It was a great place to spend a few hours if you have the time. It's free but please throw a few buck in the bin to keep places like this alive.
Many cool artifacts and tons of history
Very interesting and informative. Worth the trip. I may be bias being a Veteran myself.
This museum seems to only include a limited selection of history.
Informative chronological format with elaborate, detailed dioramas and multmedia presentations.
Enjoyed meandering through the museum today. A knowledgeable staff and many interesting artifacts. Also, a gift shop out front. On top of that, it's free!
Fantastic place!
Exhibits are well put together with lots of information available. Free to enter.
