$6 admission. Plan on 45 minutes There is no fort. The site is 2 1000+- square foot museums + an office/ bathroom. Building 1 is the rebuilt fort-era hospital (part of one wall is original). Building 2 is an aluminum building serving as the local history museum. Across the way a 3rd huge building (which is being converted to condos) and was part of the fort, and part of a wall is original(ish). Outstanding mid 1800s pharmacy exhibit with tons of artifacts and an optician's kit. Neato old dentist office. Several surgical dioramas, and quite a few civil war era medical implements. A 30 square foot Diarama of the fort. 20 objects found by archeologists are on display (broken plates, knives, etc.). A room set up in the hospital as it would have appeared. In the other bulding - the Prairie du Chein museum - there is an original iron lung, a 4' replica of the Delta Queen, and some oyster/ clam/ button objects. (These are the highlights - if nothing grabbed your interest... take that as advice). Interesting history note: Dr. William Beaumont spent 1828-1832 here, and from 1829-1831 his patient/ stomach study Alexis St. Martin (the Voyageur who was accidentally shot in the stomach at Fort Mackinac) joined him.

Very very very cool place. Although the Fort itself is no longer there, the old hospital is, and that's just fricken cool!!! I love history and especially medical history that you can see and touch! If you do to, you'll live the old fort area! Beautiful place, lots of things to learn about. Like the Native American battles that took place here in the Wisconsin area and the settling of the town of Prairie Du Chien in the 1600s!!!! Which in French means prairie of the dog. You'll learn how it got this name if you visit...and so much more!!!!
