REVIEWS OF The Mariners' Museum IN Virginia

Trista Wilt

Only a $1.00 to get in. Best buck I ever spent! I have yet to do the outside trail.

Curtis Crouch

Great historical exhibits including life size mockups of living quarters and the USS Monitor.

Amie Harris

This museum was very nice. Cost to enter was $1. However, i would have spent more for the experience. Many relics to see, nautical history to learn, and science behind ship building and preservation of artifacts. We spent more than 2 hours walking through all of the exhibits. Would have spent more had we not been so tired from our already long day. I will be visiting this museum again with my husband in the near future. The staff there were fantastic. Had an incident when we returned to our vehicles and the staff was absolutely fabulous with helping us through.

Chuck Campbell

It's a must see for anyone interested in oceanic archaeology, naval or merchant marine history, or the civil war. Large, beautiful, and rich with displays and information. Artifacts galore. Allow yourself several hours!

Ed Townes

The facilities are splendid. Well informed staff, eager to share information. If you have never visited the Mariners museum make sure and do.

John Hein

This is a great place to learn about the Mariners that built America. It has an emphasis on the Civil War. For the $1.00 entrance fee, it is a must see spot.

my cats

Amazing nautical.museum. only $1 admission. DO NOT MISS !!!

Sheridan Chandler

Lots of great historical items to observe.. A few you can touch.. But please pay attention to the signs..somethings are Not meant to be touched with good reason. Take the time to slowly wander through some amazing local history.

Rex Stevens

One of the best and detailed museums dealing with ships and modeling of ships in the world.

Mark H. Mather

Only $1 admission. Couldn't believe it. Give yourself time, there's a ton to see. A definite must see.

LaShanda Melendez

The Mariners' Museum is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. They have outdone themselves with the Monitor and Merrimack exhibits. The collection of artifacts is impressive. They even have a kids' activity pack to engage younger visitors. Here's the best part. Admission is $1! Make a day of it and visit the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, which is right beside the museum and also costs $1 per visitor.

Loren Zehr

Wonderful displays of marine craft. A lot of history to see.

Britney I

My family & I had a great experience at this museum. It only cost $1 per person & we got to enjoy some awesome exhibits. Beautiful boat models, the BMW racing boat exhibit, the submarine quarters & much much more. Also the staff was very friendly & personable.

kelli steely

Really nice museum. Great place to go with family and only $1 to get in.

Eva Burke

The Mariner's Museum is a treasure trove of nautical memorabilia and history. The beautiful galleries are full of expertly detailed signs and historical formation. All for $1.00 admission - hard to believe, but true! Remember to take some time to view the galleries in the adjacent Peninsula Fine Arts Museum as well. You'll feel entertained and enriched, and save a little jingle for the very cool gift shops!

Bob Hood

Wonderful collection of maritime artifacts and history.

Hugo Hackenbush

$1 admission. Free parking. $6 for a 40 minute+- IMAX 3D movie. Plan on all day - Literally. I budgeted 3 hours and that was woefully inadequate. (Plus there's a great 5 mile nature loop walking trail in the woods behind, so another 1 1/2 hours for that.) Every inch of the huge multi-building complex has excellent, organized, high quality displays, exhibits, and artifacts- plus several short films in their own purpose-made theaters which are absolutely top quality. I've paid $20 to see places which are nowhere near the educational, historical, interesting, cultural & treasure trove of Smithsonian-level artifacts this experience is. There must be 100 ship models in 3 rooms which alone would be worth $10 admission to see.

Catherine Nicholson

Nice lecture . Author wrote about Ww11..

Royal

One of the region's best kept secrets. Highly recommended for the whole family!! There's something of interest for everyone here.

Daryl Russell

We had an art group meet up there and had a great time. Staff was very welcoming and friendly. Plenty to see and do. The cafe is marvelous. Very family friendly environment. Great way to spend a hot day in a cool environment.

Darla Dunlap

Excellent! We had a 4 year old and she loved all the hands on areas. Very educational and entertaining. We will definately return!

Kathleen Parks

What a wonderful gem. I have lived in the area for over 40 years and can't believe it took me so long to check this out. We only planned a couple of hours which was not enough time to really enjoy everything. Definitely go & plan to spend at least 4-5 hours.

Danny Bowling

Amazing admission, great exhibits and displays... great family fun!

Jeffery White

Excellent museum, loved the model ships and boats from all ages.

Victoria M

A great place for families. They consistently have events going on each week and bigger events throughout the year. I recently became a member to save on ticket prices for these events, and after registering for a couple it's already worth it. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they clearly take pride in their work.

Christopher Blake

For a buck it's own warm day go to. Plus the kids learn something every time

Zachary Stone

The Mariners Museum was an informative and interesting experience teaching about Americas history over the seas. There were many artifacts as well as the actual gun turret off of the monitor. The life size monitor was also very interesting and it really shows you how America learned to go from wooden ships to iron.

Sheri Graham

Admission is only $1.00!! Great place!

Anita Webb

Very informational, the exhibits we're very nice. The Lighthouse Lens was amazing. There is a spot to play checkers and a couple other games that nautical Travelers played on ships. There are motion projector movies played to give information. very interesting and fun

Wendell Nealon

What a wonderful display of mariner history. Too many excellent things to mention. The admission is $1. Yes in 2019 its a buck to visit one of the best museum experiences available.

Marianne Berckmans

Loved the replicas of all the different ships. Learned about the Monitor. Enjoyed all the artifacts. Cafe looked like it had a great menu and prices, but we had just eaten at a fast food joint not having planned ahead better. Could have spent an entire day here.

Sean Hudson

An excellent museum with great exhibits and set pieces of history. I'd recommend a visit to this place to those who love history, the maritime industry, or even a passing interest in wanting something to fill your day as you can easily spend hours wandering their halls.

Christina Conners

Really interesting museum. So much to look at and learn about. Really cool to see all the miniatures and the interactive exhibits were cool. Loved the artifacts and being able to see restorations in progress of the USS Monitor. Could easily spend the whole day here and still not quite see it all.

Phillip Andrada

A good museum to visit but if you rent the place for a party keep in mind that there is a decibel rule in place that doesn't allow you to go over 90 decibels meaning it can't be that loud for your party.

Greg Effler

Best Dollar value around. World class museum.

Kurt Strosahl

This has been a favorite museum of mine for years. Every exhibit is well crafted and informative. The staff is also very knowledgeable. In particular I love the model ship exhibits

Paul Cisneros

Amazing history and at only a dollar to get in you cant beat that

William Schaub

What a great place to visit. Not for the real young ones but the 7 and 10 year olds had a ball It helped that the older one had some American history to enjoy that section. The younger one enjoyed the models especially the steam powered engines. Too much to take on a full day. Will be back to see more. Great special on price of $1.00. had funds left over to see the movie on the Oceans. Highly recommend for both the Museum and movie.

Michael Valdivielso

I really love this place and have been coming here for years. It has a ton of history about the local area but about about maritime history from around the world. Fun for the whole family - no joking they have exhibits on models, lots of interactive exhibits, and now it costs only a dollar to get in. They also have changing exhibits, movies, a nice gift shop, and a cafe that is one of the best museum cafes I have been to (outside the American Indian in DC). Of course, if you love American Civil War history or naval history then you have to visit just to peek at the remains of the USS Monitor!

Jonathan Ashton

Fun Museum that has things and history lessons for all ages. If you like/love the sea, you will love this museum!

Kelly Lipford

Beautiful place and staff was absolutely fantastic

Daniel & Donna Glembot

So many exhibits so little time. It's well worth the dollar admission.

Coastal Graphics LLC

Awesome museum. Very clean. Friendly staff. Top quality exhibits. The cafe had great food too, cafe staff were extremely friendly and brought our food out. 5 stars

angela justice

Great experience. Love how they offer one day a week for Autistic children to be engaged. They dim the lighting and lower the sounds for their enjoyment.

Michael Engelhart

A deal at a $1 admission. Kids loved looking at all the model ships.

Ron L

Lots to see in a well kept museum. Lots of information on the ironsides as well as a general maritime history. It also has the 2017 Americas cup boat and story. And last but not least a very interesting collection of boats in the small boat collection. At $1 to get in its available for all to visit.

Joseph Meister

Would love to go back and see the rest of the museum.

Mike Brace

An amazing walk through nautical history, and the Modeler's display is second to none! A must-visit for the sailor in all of us! I was so impressed I became a member on the spot!

SweetPea Schmitt

Wonderful time in the museum. So much to see. Loved the small craft boats area the best.

Cutter Dunn

This is an absolutely fantastic way to spend a rainy day. If you're into nautical history or the Civil War this is nothing short of a mecca, and even laymen will enjoy looking at all of the finely crafted ship models. Be sure to check out the Crabtree gallery; its off the side of the Oracle racing boat exhibition and really easy to miss, but the models inside are works of art. With the recent change to $1 admission this is a no brainer, and the regular lectures and events are usually well worth the upcharge. Definitely give this place a visit.

Kristy Viars

Only $1 per person! Loads of artifacts, replicas, and fun and interesting exhibits. More to see than one day can offer.

Alan Jackson

Wonderful museum bringing the area's maritime history to life as well as presenting representations of sea craft from around the world. Fantastic "Iron Clad" display as well as the actual salvaged pieces of the great Civil War warships. View the restoration process happening on site. Takes a few hours to appreciate it all. There is a gift shop and cafe in the main building and a walking/jogging path outside winding by the bodies of freshwater where you can spot various different waterfowl.

Patricia Pittman

Visited the museum with grandkids and we loved it. I think I need to visit it so that I can fully see everything without the kids. Also the movie was a great experience

Wayne Kay

A great place to visit, very interesting

Ann Burruss

If you like ships, boats and maritime history the Mariner's Museum is a great place to spend a few hours. The building with small boats is my absolute favorite. Admission is $1. Go!

Gilbert Brett

I have loved the Mariner's Museum since the 1970s. There are so many historical items there that most of us take for granted. The admission fee is a bargain for the wealth of information one can walk away with. And when you go, make sure you see the light from the lighthouse. It's as beautiful as it was when used to warn ships at sea of the coastline.

Ashley Whiting

Great place to take the kids in the summer for education and it only cost $1 per person all summer

Jennifer Johnson

My 3 boys (age 13, 8, and 3) and I had so much fun here! It is a small museum so it is doable for a toddler without needing a stroller. The exhibits are nicely arranged and there are several wonderful themed play areas for kids of various ages. We did not have the opportunity to experience the outside trail, see the 3D movie or visit the restaurant, but we look forward to our next visit. All of this for only $1.00 admission?? Can't beat that for day with 3 happy kiddos!

Timothy Baum

Awesome place to walk in nature!

Alan Gagliardo

Great opportunity to see the history of Hampton Roads area.

Leodolfo Romera

Be ready to learn and amazed by the engineering of ship building, and the rich history of the Ships evolution that was built in Hampton Roads.

Robert Dobbins

Cant say enough good about this place, a total of 2 dollars for me and my son to visit. We were there for about two hours and walked in thinking we had a pretty good handle on our history of the events of the battle of the Iron Clads but walked away with so much more knowledge thanks to the extremely well versed staff. Well worth the look. Wish we could have stayed longer and will definitely come back again

Fay Carroll

The museum is amazing! Everything you would want to know about ships, and some sailing. There is history and modern aspects. They show different movies. They vary. Something for e everyone. It really is a must see in Newport News, Virginia!

Stephen Kenney

My wife and I love this museum! We visited before we got married here and keep coming back! Such a cool museum!

Maria Vivi

There is SO MUCH to see here, we barely did half, definitely coming back! ($1 admission, $6 3d movie) / 5 STARS

Katherine Alvarez

We are in LOVE with this museum. We have visited at least ten times and just keep coming back for more. I really love that it has a lot to look at, but not huge amounts of reading. It is set up really well too. One of our favorite things is a short 'movie' about the local battle. This is one of those places that has 'something for everyone'. We like it way more than any of the D.C. museums. If you are trying to decide if you should add this museum to your super full vacation...the answer is absolutely. You could spend only a few hours and get a lot out of it. I am crazy about Jamestown and Williamsburg, but this is so unique and specific. And it is just fantastic. The nearby Embassy Suites is a nice place to stay too.

Scott Magruder

$1 entrance! Great displays and rich nautical history. You could take 2 days enjoying all they have to share. The miniature carved boats are mind blowing in detail.

Carl M

Very interesting artifacts....We enjoyed our visit.

Moriya French

Inexpensive to visit and tells part of the great history of our Mariner forefathers across the world and the history of the Norfolk/Hampton area specifically.

Charley Wolfe

Loved it! Fun place for the whole family, with an amazing tribute to our veterans. A wonderful atmosphere though out.

moriah tyson

This place is really awesome. Beautiful views. The Nolan trail is one of my favorite places. The museum exhibits are very interesting with everything from large model ships to actual pieces of the Monitor that have been restored.

Emma Greko

Easy to find and easy to get to, the Mariners museum is a bargain hunters dream for young kids. We easily spent 2 hours there, and at a $1/person, it was well worth it.

Nathan Cork

Excellent museum with lots of Naval history. Highly recommend.

Wes Harris

This was our favorite museum. It only cost one dollar and comes with a movie with surround sound..it explains how iron changed the navy..and the recovering process of the US Mariner. Free parking, cafe available. A great collection of miniature boats.

Brenda Gervais

Wonderful museum, lots of fascinating facts and exhibits displayed. Not sure if it's always $1.00 to get in, well worth it, you won't be disappointed!

Charles Jones

Good place to ride bike and get work out in meet friendly people thare also

Craig Moffatt

Go every year. Always love it! So impressive!

Alan Oswald

The Mariner's musuem was full of history and surprises. My family and I had never been there before but we will definitely return. I think we went through part 5 of 14 parts in 2 hours. The admission was only 1$. That is incredible considering all the activities they have to offer. I look forward to returning and visiting the other parts we didn't have time to visit this time.

Howard Nusbaum

Blew me away how good the museum was for only $1

L Miller

My family of 6 had a very enjoyable time! The cost of admission is $1 per person which is extremely nice for a big family! We loved all of the interesting nautical facts. My son loved the old compasses and books about where the pieces if timber for the ships. The monitor section of the museum.is AMAZING! Well done. A to scale replica area you walk through and see where the different things would have been. Also a full.scale model outdoors to walk on and explore.

Jeff Boarman

This is a must see if in Newport News area! It was $1 a person, but worth much, much more. Great multimedia, awesome lifesize replicas, models of ships, knowledgeable guides, a cafe, a park, and more. We will come back! Plan to spend at least 2 hours.

Christine Stevens

This 9000 square ft museum is a Smithsonian quality museum. This was our second visit to the facility as last yr we were unable to see it all in the time we had. Allow yourself at least an entire day. There is a cafe there for lunch and a gift shop. The fee to get in is minimal. Such a wonderful experience. Newport News is lucky to have such a great place.

Mary Monteith

Such a wonderful experience for anyone who goes. The $1 admission fee makes it a great deal especially if you cannot spend the day. Great exhibits by a staff that cares!

Christian Berry

Loved my visit. Great place to brush up on naval and maritime history. Great value and neat artifacts, particularly from the famous Monitor in the Monitor/Merrimack battle. Highly worth the time!

Sean Mokler

Can't beat the price here. $1 for the whole museum. Great artifacts and history. Well put together exhibits.

You definitely get a bang for you buck, of a $1 admission. So much to see, especially USS Monitor, its conservation, and history of the Ironclads! I'll say it again: THERE'S SO MUCH TO SEE HERE. Ship replicas, model ships, sailing ships, racing ships... Definitely worth the trip, and I hope to come back soon. #gonavy

DW Davis

The displays were well done and the history presented concerning the CSS Virginia (aka USS Merrimack) and the USS Monitor were highly informative. The highlight was seeing the actual turret of the Monitor in the preservation tank. This museum is a must see for Civil War history enthusiasts.

Thomas Andra

Good place to cool down on a hot day. The staff is wonderful and not to mention the noland trail that surrounds it is gorgeous

Megan Clark

Best kept secret of a museum. Only $1 to visit and so much to see and do there. Dont miss this place!!

Deborah McKnight

Enjoyed the museum. Staff was particularly friendly.

Dennis Rhoads

I loved it. It was educational plus entertaining. The 3D movies are quite good. This is a first class museum. The best part I have saved to last, the admission charge is 1 dollar per person. That is the regular price

Glenn Manning

Outstanding display of USS Monitor remnants and artifacts, ship models, as well as, numerous historical ship and boat mariner artifacts, Plan to spend a full day from 9 AM to 5 PM. On-site cafeteria serves freshly prepared sandwiches, snacks and meals. It's a great place to have a delicious lunch when touring the museum!

Anne Martin

It was thoroughly enjoyable! We only had an hour so we'll be back. Many hours could be spent in there as it was so well designed with many many interesting exhibits.

Heather Tumlinson

It was a fabulous museum. Very informative. Great place to spend the day with family and did I mention it was only a dollar to get in.

Katie Mcgann

From the time you enter the doors, you are immersed in a welcoming and educational environment where the staff and guides have all been thoroughly educated on the museum's content and history, allowing you the visitor to feel important and included in a part of history and the future of the Museum. The monitor exhibit is excellent, the model ships exhibit is a great collection, and soon there will be a WW1 exhibit which will be a grrat addition. Looking forward to seeing the growth of this museum!

Brian Pierce

Excellent place to go with the family, and if you are a little more athletic or just like to hike a bit then don't forget the trail right outside.

Travis China

I think all US Navy Sailors should visit this place. Absolutely love the history, displays in this place. Friendly staff, too.

Chanelle Kirchgestner

Absolutely beautiful to visit, well priced and the walk around the lake is surrounded with wildlife! Not what you expect in the middle of the city! Definitely a breath of fresh air!

Suzanne Martin

The friendliness of the staff alone made the experience all worth it. The 3D movies were super cute, with a great message.

Jennifer Hagen

I really enjoyed the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia exhibit. It was great learning how and why they were built, about the battle of Hampton Roads, and the raising of the Monitor and preservation of it. Exhibits were of various design - reading, computer touch screens, short movies. The rest of the museum was ok. The other exhibits seemed boring and not as interactive or well laid out. Bonus that admission was $1 per person!

Tonie Larison

Very nice visit and educational! Entry was only $1 making it a great add on to your vacation plans. It took less than 2 hours to visit and explore which made it a great afternoon adventure out of the heat.

Fortina Goins

The staff was so kind and friendly. The Mariners Museum is very clean, interesting and beautiful. It's definitely a great outting for an individual and a family. The artifacts are wonderful.

Joan Levy

I walked and ran on the trail here. Delightful scenery, dirt path.

Terence Hampton

Really nice museum. Not crowded. Inexpensive. Very interesting, they are performing restoration work on artifacts recovered from the wreck of the USS Monitor.

Sharon Kessel

Very clean, organized, and full of great historical events, facts and visual replicas! The Battle Theater was amazing and the choreography was VERY well done! Wished we would have been able to spend more time there! Definitely a place worth visiting and for $1/person?!?!?!!?? Pretty incredible!!!!

Corey Schmidt

Very nice place. I really enjoyed how the layout part of the museum made you feel like you were in a boat at sea and the life size replicas were amazing too.

Devlyn Rice

Amazing museum, especially with the $1 admission during the Summer. Amazing relics and models and very entertaining. The Monitor portion of the museum is absolutely stunning. The recreations, interactive exhibits, and artifacts are second to none. While it may not be the best for children, those who are interested in naval history absolutely should make a visit.

Natilee Morales

This Museum is AMAZING!!!! Plus it's only $1 to get in! The model ships are absolutely stunning, we spent a rainy day here and have no regrets! We will definitely return

Katrina Van Dyke

My family and I have free membership for a year thanks to my son's school and I was so excited to go! Then my sister came from out of town &and they paid only a $1 each! We really enjoyed ourselves and the 3D Ocean movie was awesome! I'm bringing my dad back because he's a Navy Veteran and he would love this! It's worth it especially during the summer time.

Ed Handel

Nicely laid out with a lot of info. Great Monitor exhibit.

Theresa Comstock

A great place! The whole family loved it. Took us about 4 hrs to go through it. Best part tix are only $1 per person. Worth more than that. Boats from all over the world. Lots of history. The replicas of boats are great and highly detailed. We did stop for lunch at the cafe. Food was very good and reasonably priced. We always walked a small part of the trail to the bridge. Saw huge turtles and a snake swimming.

Samantha

We enjoyed a lovely afternoon here, and the $1 admission for summer is the best deal in town. My children enjoyed the games and dress up chest, and the battle theater is a very cool experience. Make sure you walk all the way to the back of the model ship exhibit, where model makers are creating intricate replicas of all types of boats. Each staff member we met along the way was friendly and happy to answer questions. The cafe has a great selection and prices were reasonable.

JOHN R Mccarron

Best $2 I ever spent fantastic amount of history in that museum great parking all air-conditioned

Susan Greene

Talk about a lot of Bang for the Buck admission fee!

Connor MacEntee

Bekah Chambers

Had a great time Labor Day weekend exploring this place! Wonderful exhibits and very knowledgeable staff! Fun time for the whole family

Phil Gravel

The Mariners’ Museum is a true gem. To begin with, admission is only $1 – what a bargain! In addition, it probably has the most comprehensive display describing the evolution from wooden sailing ships to steam powered ironclads, from iron projectiles to exploding shells, and from smooth bore guns to rifled artillery. One portion of the display depicts the conversion of the scuttled frigate USS Merrimack to the ironclad CSS Virginia. Another display is a full-scale model of the USS Monitor. Another area describes the decisions that led to the development of the ironclads and how they were financed. The battle between the Virginia and Monitor is well described along with the fate of each of the ships afterward. This is only a portion of the museum. I had 2½-3 hours to spend at the museum and spent all of it on the ironclads. There is so much more. If my travels happen to bring me to this area again, I will be sure to go back to the Mariners’ Museum and see that parts that I didn’t have time to cover during this visit. If you’re in the Newport News area, be sure to visit the Mariners’ Museum – you will find it time well spent. Speaking of time, be sure that you allow enough time!

Daniel Waters

Awesome exhibits and ship models. Very nice 5 mile trail outside!

Linda Panther

Ok so I had a couple of issues when I visited. First I had of course went online prior to my visit to check pricing and movies being shown (thank goodness). So when I get to the cash register with my 3 year old granddaughter I told her I needed admission for 2 and 2 for the movie. She full pops me on the price. I said I'm sorry miss but she is 3 and your charging me as though she is an adult. She was not kind rather snarky and said how was I supposed to know? Seriously where are your customer service skills? You should have asked me the age of the child as she was standing right there! Then she needed to use the bathroom and having not been trained that long meant NOW! When I asked the security guy n another worker where the bathroom was they decided to cut up with some joking n flirting which angered me and had to tell them again it is an emergency. My friend had come along also and she was rather put off with the whole experience. Oh AND the movie started a half an hour late and there were lots of kids in the showing so it made for a miserable experience for all parents/grandparents. Hope the next time is better. It is a beautiful musuem rich in history so I will return. I think the stall needs to be trained more in customer service for sure.

Eric Overmyer

The Mariner's Museum is a wonderful mix of educational and fun. They host a lot of events too. Probably the best part is being able to hear about old ships dating all the way back to the Civil War - and then you get to touch peices of them. It gives context to some of the things that you've read in history books, and in a very tangible way.

Tom Peden

Awesome place!!! Very affordable with so much to see. Large items and small items. The information and displays for the Monitor were great. I highly recommend a visit there. Well worth it.

Juanita Sabochick

There is much more here than I thought, we needed more time, but what we did see was very cool.

maxwell posival

This museum was fascinating. There was a lot to learn.

theresa korovich

Great place for all ages. Interactive. Even the cafe was great and very reasonably priced. My family loved everything about our whole visit

Brendan Pope

Admission was $1 so it I didn't like it no big loss! However, I was really pleasantly surprised with this museum. There were lots of exhibits and some really cool artifacts. I especially liked the news clippings of Titanic survivors from the area, the sailing exhibit with clips from the America's cup and learning about the Monitor.

Angelo Lema Jr

Lots of American history. Well worth taking time to go see it. The ironclad, Monitor is the primary exhibit. Only $1 to enter.

Dave Johnson

Love history and this place was on the bucket list.

Darin Williams

It was only a dollar to get in. A great deal. The staff was very friendly. The musuem was very interactive with some very interesting history about the Tidewater Region.

Rebecca Wesson

Awesome, full of history and only $1 admission! Love the trail too

Kathy Pillow

Best museum I've been to. We were very impressed.

Katherine Schrader

Went today expecting my three kids to be bored in 20 minutes (for $1 admission, I was okay with that) but we ended up spending 3 hours there and didn't even see everything. They had a nice children's storytime and small kids play area indoors and some climbing structures for the kids outside. But what my kids loved best was exploring the museum.

Alvin Odom

This place is fantastic! Staff is very friendly, lots to see, very clean, and they have a very good cafe. Not only that, but the admission price is $1.00!

Brenda Johnson

Nice place to visit. Takes at least 2 hrs to go through, but if you're not into nautical history, you'll be bored after an hour. I was. Walk the 5 mile trail outside. It's great!

Penny PETERS

GREAT Venue for any special occasion or event! What's not to love about the history and the Maritime connection to our lovely Hampton roads area! There's so much to learn and explore here you could easily spend A-day taking in all that the mariners museum has to offer!

Maggie Wilner

Just WONDERFUL!!!!! I hadn't been in years...so much better now...science and history combine! The building and grounds are spectacular! 6 stars!

Randell Kelly

Besides only costing a dollar for entry, the staff was extremely friendly and full of information. The exhibits were very informative.

Keith McCready

This place is huge my wife and I could not finish it all in a full day. Seeing the remnants of the the Civil War Ironclad USS monitor and all of the pieces that have gone with it being preserved is an incredible experience. And understanding the full story between it's opponent the CSS Virginia AKA Merrimack was outstanding! And all of this for an admittance fee of one u.s. dollar! I will highly recommend this Museum to anyone who is interested in history.

Megan Castro

The Mariners Museum has an amazing inventory. Topping that is the turret from the sunken Monitor that is being restored. We love the small boat gallery with many unique boats as well as the Crabtree collection of miniature models. It’s a must see museum in Newport News, and now admission is only $1.00! Stop here if you get a chance. This place is one of the best museums I've seen. A great outing for solo visitors or groups, but bring your walking shoes. It's huge. I spent over half a day here and still didn't see everything. Recommended.

C Williams

Nice place to see model ships when i went admission was 1$ the walking trails are nice upkept and quiet

Nathan Espinoza

A great museum for all ages! You need a whole day to see everything. A very nice Cafe and gift shop. Fascinating ironclad exhibit! The monitor conservation area is a must see. I hope to visit this amazing museum soon.

Just beware, if you are a history lover, you might just 'need' to move here like I did. Now I just might get to see enough of it. Well, after about 100 more visits that is. ;)

The Ship Model room is amazing. Such detail. There is a live torpedo exhibit and scavenger hunts for the kids. A 3D movie experience is offered as well. Admission is $1.00 and worth it.

Easily one of the best/largest museums in the world on Maritime events. This should be on most visitor's must see lists while in the area. Also do not forget to walk around the park grounds which are massive (highlight is Lion's gate). To increase attendance entrance fees have been reduced. Also, if you need to do maritime research they boast one of the countries largest maritime libraries (books and photos). This in a national tresure established by the founder of Newport News shildbuilding, Ferguson and Huntington, over 90 years ago.

This is a really cool place. If you're interested in the history of shipping....This is the place.

This was 1st visit in 20 yrs; and I was very impressed. Seeing the Monitor and Merrimac was impressive. I learned so much more than I thought I would. The care given to exhibits and the layout of the facility is awesome.

Always a solid walk on that trail tho. Museum is great. Wedding venue was phenomenal I officiated a wedding here and the staff was friendly and helpful.

I was impressed by the variety. Static exhibits for this Granny to read and enjoy, but also places for my grands to play! Live demonstrations and life size recreations, too. You need to go more than once as there's too much to get in one trip.

This place was awesome! Can't beat $1 admission fee.

Great museum to visit with friends and family. Fascinating artifacts of the Civil War and beautiful models of ships and boats all over the world.

Well taken care of 5 mile trail, every tripping hazard is spray painted orange. Great for dogs, children, walkers and runners. The beach view and water views are nice. Sometimes you can spot turtles and cranes. The museum is interesting but we mostly go to the trail.
