I brought my kids here after having been told it's worth seeing. It is indeed!!! Whether you want to catch up on aviation history or go into the observation tower, there's plenty to see and do. Our highlight was the shuttle. Seeing the shuttle on TV has zero comparison to seeing it in person. Well worth a couple of hours of your weekend.

James Gasser

Fantastic museum. 6 stars! Even if you aren't deeply into aviation you will love it. I recommend a docent tour - fun and informative. Admission is free. You can spend anywhere from an hour to a couple of days, but realistically you should plan on spending most of a whole day to do it justice.

Ján Dujčák

This place has so much to offer! Seeing real Discovery Space Shuttle, SR71 Blackbird, Concorde, real B29 Enola Gay and seized Japanese and German prototype aircraft from WW2 is superb experience. Plus views at nearby Dulles airport from the tower with opportunity to see incoming air traffic. All of that for free (the only expense is $15 parking ticket and whatever you decide to spend on the gift store and food court). I highly recommend guided tours, tour guides are fantastic.

Alexander Houck

Amazing to see the preservation work going on in the hangar and absolutely mammoth vehicles of science and destruction all in one place. Definitely a must for aviation enthusiasts and those with young children. This gets a knock for dinning however: 1 McDonald's which doesn't actually have enough chairs for the tables inside. You're also pretty much going to want to Google or download some kind of your if you're not looking to spend money ($7) for theirs.

R Brian Cutler

An amazing addition to the Smithsonian museum, this has planes and helicopters and has a history of aviation that is extensive. Items of note include the Enola Gay, an SR71, and the Space Shuttle Discovery. There is a fun scavenger hunt for kids, and enough to do for a few hours. Well worth the $15 parking.

Kevin Campbell

This museum has a very interesting mix of planes and other flying machines, including a lot of German WWII craft. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There are free tours and hands on exhibits including the ability to sit in a Cessna 205. We had a great time during our visit. We didn't get to see much from the "control tower", but is a great view.

Jean Lester

It was worth the effort to get out to this museum! If you drive, parking is $15.00. You can do it by public transportation from downtown but it will take 1 1/2 hours to do it. It is a day-long adventure. This space is ENORMOUS and grandly displayed. If you've never really heard of this place, like me, it is part of the Smithsonian. So free admission. For those with kids, they have a McDonald's here. So you can feed them. If you are really interested in the Air and Space museum in downtown DC, don't bother at this time. The museum is under major renovation at this time. It's a VERY small section that is available to the public.

Brendan Crawford

If you are into science plains rocket ships or anything that has to do withmechanical moving parts in this is the place for you. They have old and new planes, as well as some historical claims like re-creation of the wright brothers. They also have the Discovery shuttle. Among other various satellites from the ages. They also have extremely informational tour guides. Any questions can be answered by any of the tour guides. Please check out some of my pictures to get an idea of what to expect to see if it's right for you.

Ashley Stearns, CPA, CFE

Fantastic museum. Definitely good for families and people interested in flight. Has some very old air planes along with helicopters and a space shuttle. It also has missiles. Very informative and the tour guides are great. Plan to do a lot of walking. The museum is basically a giant hanger and has elevated walking ramps to see the planes hanging from the ceiling.

Francesco Torre

A bit far from Washington DC but definitely worth a visit. Here you can literally see the history of aeronautics and space engineering with real masterpieces like the SR-71, the Concorde and one of the Space Shuttles.

Robert S

Growing up with the downtown DC NASM basically being the coolest place on Earth, and having visited the Garber facility as a kid seeing all the stuff they didn't have on display in the museum, it really is an amazing place to go see, even if you're not a complete aviation nerd like me. They have built an incredibly impressive space with some truly unique aircraft on display. I would say it is on par with the Air Force museum in Dayton as far as what they have to see, and I could spend all day hanging out here. The "control tower" is fun to see, and I'm sure great for kids to watch the airplanes going in and out of Dulles, depending on the winds and which way they are landing. We've also been many times purely to see movies at the IMAX theater, which as far as those go is pretty good. You do have to pay for parking, but the museum itself has no charge to enter. On certain days parking is free, or if you show up closer to closing time, though then you will not have nearly enough time to see everything. If you are visiting DC it is totally worth it to make the trek out towards Dulles to check it out, along with the original location.

Peter Ayache

Love this museum. I visit every time I am in Virginia. Every time I see something new. Great place to walk see the planes read the info and just enjoy a lazy afternoon.

Debra Olson

I love how many historical and significant air vessels they have there! Good signage, knowledgeable docents, and so very many things to see! Parking is $15, unless you arrive after 4:00pm. If you are at IAD airport on a long layover you can get a bus from there for a very minimal price (something like $0.50) and they have lockers where you can store your luggage while you look around. They also show regular and IMAX movies there. I love it! And it’s free!!

Kasey Ackerman

Absolutely love this place. It's easy to spend entire day with all the unique and unusual aircraft and spacecraft.

Jesse Enloe

This place is amazing! Of all the places my family and I visited in our week-long vacation to the DC area, this was my favorite! My wife made fun of me for how excited I was too see some of these aircraft, such as the Enola Gay, the SR-71, and the Discovery (not to mention a P-51, F4, F14, even a MiG-21, and oh so many more). But, I explained to her it was kind of like seeing a celebrity -- you only ever get to see these places in books or films, and here they all were, together in one place, in person! I only regret I didn't give myself more time there. I hope to return again, soon -- and maybe bring some other military airplane geeks like myself.

Tara Faust

There's enough here to do one full day or two half days of visiting. Touring exhibits, then go upstairs and see renovation space and different photo ops. Flight simulators, IMAX and observation deck are all great. Great for families.

Robert Albright

Amazing experience. Note that the museum is free but the parking is $15. Def worth getting in at 945 before they open so you can get some pictures before people start arriving. Lots of space, lots of exhibits and you even get to see in the restoration area.

jonathan Hart

Great experience. My wife is not really into aerospace as I am but she thoroughly enjoyed the museum. Definitely take the FREE guided tour (select times) as the volunteers will keep you engaged. It lasts about 2 hours and covers the highlights. What you learn will not be on the placards. Very cool and inspiring.

Caleb Rothe

This is a fantastic museum and a great addition to what was offered at the main Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Perfect for aviation enthusiasts and those without any real inclination, the artifacts can we toured in detailed fashion, or simply enjoyed via a casual stroll through the hanger. I recommend saving 9space room for last as a great way to cap off your visit. Overall, a great way to spend a day, or even just part of a day. Stunning presentation!

Ethan Stein

One of the best aviation museums in the country it is worth the metro ride coming from the district. They had a Concorde, 707, The Discovery Orbiter and more just to make a few. It’s next to Dulles airport. It’s best to come to this location since the one in DC is under renovation and not all of the exhibits are their. Free admission just like all the other locations in the Smithsonian Institution. The observation tower was great, good for the avgeeks and plane spotters. The museum has McDonalds location and a museum shop onsite.

jaison thomas

Great place. Much better than the smithsonian museum in national mall. Good display of airplanes. Discovery shuttle was mindblowing. Observation deck is worth to checkout.

Valerie Michaud

This place is great to bring kids. The only cost that is required is parking for $15. There is a McDonald's, gift shop, simulators, and IMAX that cost money but you can spend plenty of time exploring the museum without paying for any of that. Make sure if you bring kids, you ask for the scavenger hunt at the visitor desk. The kids love looking for the planes and if they fill it in they can turn it in for a stamps, a pin, and a magnet! Great place to spend a summer day with the kids.

Nick Kemme

Awesome place to see all sorts of aircraft, including the SR 71 and Space shuttle. Definitely plan on spending at least a few hours here at least, the space is massive.

Apex Schneider

Loved it. Best Museum I have ever visited. Free Tour was great. The Guide Joe really knew what he was talking about and made it even better. Stayed there a complete day. I wish I had more time and could come again.

Matthew Fegan

In my opinion, this is the finest museum in the DC area. The exhibits are fascinating for anyone with an interest in space or aviation, and the building is spacious and relaxing for families. Guests have the option of visiting the observation tower to watch the arrivals and departures at Dulles, and the views are spectacular as the big international flights pass.

Wilsondude2bh

Friendly staff with factual tour guides, has a McDonald's inside for easy food as well, amazing. Nice arrangement of planes and spacecraft.

Brandon Bucci

Cool place to go, not very crowded and the staff is very friendly. The collection is very cool and is prolly one of the best collections on the east coast. The place has a real McDonald’s inside, which was pretty cool. Very calm atmosphere and relaxing, tons of different planes and cool things to see. It’s free but parking is $15 so it’s reasonable. Definitely recommend

David Clore

If you like planes or space travel this is the place to go. This place is huge! Seeing the space shuttle up close was awesome! Seeing all the planes they have from wartime and civil aviation was truly remarkable. It takes a full day to truly see everything here. I could not visit the observation tower because of lightning in the area but saw most everything else. I would highly recommend visiting the museum.

Jerry Beck

Space Shuttle Discovery still a beautiful sight to behold! Plus hundreds of other historical jets, planes, missiles and just about anything in between. Would strongly recommend the IMAX film "D-Day - Normandy 1944" as it was a hit with everyone in our party.

Jason Griffith

One of the best collections of aerospace history, a must see for anyone interested in aviation or space. I would plan a minimum of 4 hours. The docents are extremely knowledgeable (some even former aviators or engineers). Every time I take the free highlights tour, there's additional nuance provided by each docent. The restoration area in the back is very cool with numerous aircraft in progress.

Kevin Gard

This is one of the most unique aerospace museums on the planet. The massive collection of air and space craft under a single roof is unprecedented. The location is twenty odd miles from the National Mall, but it well worth a half or full day excursion. Admission is free but parking is $15 per vehicle.

H P

This place is an absolute must! It is a hidden gym that is so amazing. Well worth the trip here.

Beth Peterson

Love bringing the family here. It's nice in that it is a different experience than the Air & Space Museum in DC (both are great!). It is a large hanger-type building with lots of historic aircraft and space craft on display, including one of the space shuttles. Please check this out! Lots of fun for all ages!

Diana Erwin

Really fun museum. I highly recommend doing a guided tour. The docent did a great job and told stories that made the planes come to life.

Michael Uy

This place is amazing! Do you love the Air and Space Museum in DC? Well, this place is a lot better. Sr-71 blackbird, the space shuttle Discovery, the Enola Gay are all here along with aircraft, missiles, rockets too many to count. Arrive early to avoid the crowd, but even at peak hour it wasn't bad at all. The guided tours are free. Check that out as well.

Isaac Nakata

The air and space museum is awesome!!! They have a majority of the planes on display. I was surprised that they have a an F-35!! I think the only planes they do not have that I wish they had were B-52 and B-2. I've been to Huntsville and they have a shuttle, SR-71 and Polaris missile but the air and space has a lot more room so they have a lot more to see! If you are even moderately interested in aviation this is the place to come see.

CeCi Stephens

So many aircrafts. Recommend visits over several days. If you have special events to go to make sure you get there early. We're able to drop a large group off for the day and leave without getting charged for parking. Lines for viewing deck are long except around lunch!

Daniel Cordova

Not enough good things can be said about this place. Exposing my children to all classes of aircraft, seeing a real space shuttle, and the observation deck is amazing. All the staff were helpful, and eager to explain and share what they know. My kids eyes were the size of saucers the entire time. Amazing.

Nate 026

If you like planes or space this is a great spot for you. First, it's free except for parking. Second, it has plenty of planes and a real space shuttle. Third, the workers are very helpful if you're trying to ride a simulation or need help with something. They have very rare items. It's just a great place to be.

Albert Brea

What an impressive collection of airplanes from all decades. A lot of them hanging from the ceiling above you, makes it feel like they are still flying the skies. I felt like a little kid again, it's an awesome feeling. Great museum to visit with kids, they'll never forget.

Ty Hoang

Beautiful collection of vintage and current aircraft and diverse collections. Concorde, SR-71, Discovery shuttle, X35, XV-15. No food inside but had McDonnalds on site and storage area to store your luggage if you are visiting from Dulles airport. I went in mid October and there was no crowd there.

Tim H

Love this place, like a giant air plane hangar. Definitely need more room to display all the planes, rockets and space shuttle. Saw a sign that they are starting on a 7 year long update/expansion but not sure when it's going to start.

Steve C

You could spends days here if you love looking at airplanes. There are so many exhibits to see . I'm not sure if one day is enough time to truly experience all this place has to offer. There are several different styles of planes and so much aviation history, The gift shop is great too. This is a must see.

Adam Abrahamson

The amazing of planes, jets, helicopters and space equipment blew my mind. The fact that it was free (except parking) made it even better. I would have easily paid for entry based on the mass amount of things to look at.

Nishant Sahay

Awesome Halloween special!! The theme for 2019 was "Star Wars" and they did not disappoint at all. Hundreds of people, colorfully dressed in beautiful attires made for added attraction. There were picture booths with your favorite Star Wars characters, free candies and chocolates, as well as interesting science based activities for kids. It's a must visit on Halloween. Be careful though. Parking is still paid ($15) and the parking lots tend to get full pretty quickly. Plan to arrive atleast 15 minutes before the opening hours. Finding a parking space, and even exit takes time. Overall, a wonderful place for kids as well as grown ups.

avaneesh vyas

Great fun place. The items on display have a lot of history to boast off. The free public tours although take a while, close to 2 hours, but is a must do to understand the context. When the veterans talk about the machines you know that google can't match that atleast. Must for anybody in love with aviation or otherwise and practically anybody who loves machines and history

N K Quill

I've been to the Air & Space Museum on the Mall many times, so decided to take my visitors to this museum, which I had not been to before. Wow, is this place amazing!! It is many times bigger than the original museum in DC. It was busy on a Saturday but there was still lots of room to move around and see more planes of all ages and sizes. Among the many were a Concorde, the Enola Gay, one of the original Wright planes, all sorts of WWII planes from different countries, but the best gallery was the one with the space stuff, including the Discovery shuttle, which is humongous! There's lots of interactive stuff for kids. There is a McDonald's on the premises and an interesting gift shop. A fun way to spend a day!!

Rit Kay

Fun and informative, with two caveats...parking is FIFTEEN dollars, for an hour or the day, and your Smithsonian associate membership doesn't give you much, unless you subscribe specifically to Air and Space Magazine. Food service on the premises is a rather mediocre McDonald's...life in the modern world, I suppose....and, considering that Nike missiles were all over the US fifty or so years ago( almost every small town had a hidden silo or two), you'd think the Place would have one on display, instead of the prototypes leading up to it. Lots of its successors on display, tho no 'Honest Johns' are there either. Lots of Combat Birds, and quite a lot of Space Program stuff, and a gorgeous installation, awesome for it's sheer size.

Martin Dziura

The best Air & Space Museum I've visited so far. It's amazing how many impressive exhibits one can fit into these two halls. Museum was free (except the 15$ parking) and not crowded.

Delighted Day

Museum entry is free but there is no way you can walk that far even a healthy adult. Parking is $15 but After 4 pm is FREE!!! Keep the ticket don’t have to go to the pay machine, when you leave giving to the worker in the booth at the open exit.. If you went at 4 pm, you got to enjoy 1.5 hour which will not be enough seriously. There are so many interesting airplane for you to enjoy. There is a wishing well at the front. I let my kids 3 and 6 years old throw a nickel in there and let them make a wish, they love it, love it. They wanted to stay longer, you will, too. I think you will need at least 4 hours!!! The place is stroller friendly!!! We all 3 have such a great time. ⭐️ ⭐️

Jefferson Livermon

Quality museum that covers all aspects of our country's and the world's air and space history. Expanded since visiting shortly after it opened. Even better than before. Something there for all the family. It will appeal to the most technically inclined as well as to those more casually interested in such things.

Shiva Shankar

Amazing place to experience the humanity advancement in air and space technology. Whatever we have heared of, studied about can be seen and felt. You can experience the virtual reality of war planes. Also you can see the Ariel view of Dallas airport from the watch tower from this museum complex. Entry is free and only parking is charged. Sunday even the paring is free after 4 PM. Has a gift shop and cafeteria within its complex.

Ru Sarina

This museum is a must see for aviation fanatics. Admission is free and the $15 charge for parking is well worth it. You can pay cash or with credit card for the parking. There is so much to do and see for people of all ages. There is a McDonald's and a very large museum gift shop. We first visited the control tower for an amazing view of the area. It seems small from the outside, but once you go in there, it is really big. You can't bring a stroller into the tower, but you can leave it next to the elevator. There is an option to pay for a guided tour with a headset and a little hanging device, but we opted to just read the information and play around with many interactive computers full of information. There was a free guided tour of the Discovery shuttle that was extremely informative. There is a photography business that will take your picture with a green background and make you an astronaut. My older uncle got a kick out of that. The museum has one free simulator that allows you to park the Discovery shuttle. There are flight simulators that require you to pay but they are all in one section of the museum. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for something to do in the area.

Travis Brooks

Aviation buffs could spend days wandering around all of the aircraft on display. Excellent showcase from all eras and genres of flight. The size and variety of the collection is incredible, and growing regularly. Highly recommended.

Trent Lytle

What an amazing place, lots of aircraft to see and learn about. My favorite area was the space section. The restoration area was nice to see. Didn't go into the IMAX theater. The control tower was nice but the wind was blowing from another direction so there were no planes flying by the tower. Highly recommended if you are interested in flight.

Gary Simmons

Great museum. Took the 2 hr narrated tour and the tour guide had a lot of knowledge and was great. I would rate it better than the one on the National Mall. So many eras of planes and the space shuttle Discovery was awesome.

Anne Simmons

Amazing! So much to see and learn. Well worth the travel time. A must see if you enjoy air and space history. Large collection of both. Would visit again.

Amber Larson

There is a lot of information there, not only on the plaques but also with the different tour guides. You can opt for an express (1 hr) or detailed (2 hr) tour. The hangar is organized in different eras of aviation from early years to space aviation. They also have an observation deck where you can see the airport planes across the way coming in and out. Admission is free but parking is $15 unless you leave within 30 minutes if you drop somebody off.

Adrian Thern

It's one of the best collections of air and space crafts. You can get a look at the insight of some engines and generally see a bit of everything here. Just epic here even though you could argue if there is too little space for everything.

Katsung Mak

Enjoyed seeing the shuttle. So many amazing planes to see. Note:. There is a tour. Unfortunately, one of their tour guys uses his fancy green laser to point at things. Wasn't part of his tour and got blasted in the face. So watch out for that guy and go home with your eyesight intact. Using a laser in the vicinity of so many people requires me to take away 3 stars.

Mike Kendrick

Fantastic experience! A huge diverse collection of aircraft from the beginning of aviation to the present. One can walk up to the planes and get a true sense of their size and presence

Jester Mynah

I love aviation and the stories behind it's development. The collection here really brings those together.

Jerry Schmidt

This is a must see exhibit for all. Locals and tourists alike will find the aviation experience second to none. The Space Shuttle and SR-71 tend to be the highlight, but there is a plane for all in this magnificent place.

Steven Wulf

Unbelievable museum. If you have any interest in aviation or space, this museum is a must see. Located just minutes from Dulles airport, it is convenient to hit even if you have a few minutes before a flight. The collection is vast, covering aircraft from the dawn of aviation, all the way to modern times. Located inside you will find aircraft like the Concorde, and SR-71, and the Enola Gay B-29 Bomber, to name a few large attractions. The Space Shuttle Discovery is the main attraction in the space area, with it being preserved from it's last mission, rather than cleaned and restored to new. This keeps all of the heat marks from it's last re-entry into Earth's Atmosphere. This is must be a bucket list destination for anyone who has an interest in flight.

Nancy Friesen

Great air museum! Lived seeing the flying machines. I also enjoyed watching the refurbishing of old planes. Would go back.

Andy Piazza

My favorite DC area museum. It is a must-see for locals and tourists. Their Halloween event is great for kids.

Hannah Didear

We went to see the Discovery Space Shuttle and we're not disappointed. We also got to see a whole lot of hobby planes, commercial and military aircraft as well.

Chad South

Great finish to our D.C. trip. This was one of the best museums we visited. Bathrooms at every corner and they were very clean and well kept

Pete Florez

This was the one Smithsonian that my 14 year old son had to see on our trip. It did not disappoint. If you have any family members that are interested in aviation at all this is the place to go. Great place to visit if you want to get out of the elements. Went during the hottest part of July and didn't even break a sweat. McDonald's located on site so you don't have to pack a lunch. It's located forty minutes away from the middle of DC so it's not easily accessible. The good thing about that is that you don't have to deal with throngs if people like you do around the National Mall

Sven Flegel

Some awesome vehicles I remember from childhood prototype airplane books. Also unexpected were the gondolas from round the world ballooning trips and the like. Some very cool exhibits in the space part as well, apart from the Discovery.

lukiex

The nicest aviation museum ive ever been to (around the world). Everything is nicely restored and displayed. You can spend hours there waling around

Sonja Robinson

This place is amazing! So many different planes in one building! Absolutely beautifully laid out. Bathrooms could be cleaner. Overall very nice experience.

Connor Gosnell

Amazing collection of aircraft and vehicles. Knowledgeable tour guides offered very in depth tours which were great. Highly recommended to anyone in the Dulles or DC area

Seabass K.

Modern, well layed out building with an excellent collection of rare and original air/spacecraft. Information given is good and interesting. Place is free, though there is a fee for parking.

Gary Offutt

Sometimes called the Air and Space Museum Annex, this is a huge space exhibiting military and commercial aviation from its beginning to the present. What more can you say about a space where a Concorde seems almost small at one end, a Space Shuttle faces pretty much all the U.S. capsules used in manned flight, the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk takes pride of place in the center, and you look up to see the Enola Gay above you? And you can try different "flight simulators" for different historic planes? After which you can switch perspective by visiting a mock of a control tower. The layout is excellent, with ground and overhead walkways allowing you both ground and bird's eye views of the exhibits. And the exhibits have clear explanations with sufficient detail to provide understanding of them. It is a place I can pay multiple visits and learn something new each time.

peter wood

Absolutely awesome. Well worth a visit. I only had and hour or so but got to have a good wander round. Will have to go back for more detail. The Shuttle is excellent.

Angie Matthews

Love this museum! If you are an airplane / space buff you will love this too, they have airplanes from the very beginning of aviation history on up to the space shuttle. There are also flight simulators where you can play pay $10 and pretend to fly a plane, there's a ride simulator also if you don't want to fly, and then there is the virtual reality space tour for $12. My dad and I did the space vr and it was kind of cool.

Jason Chamberlain

This is the place to go to see some great aircraft. I loved seeing the SR-71. They also have a great collection of air-to-air missiles as well as old engines. It was also really neat to watch a video of Discovery's last launch while standing right next to Discovery. I also thought it was amazing to see a Concorde up close. This is a must-see if you're in the area. They do charge for parking, but it's worth it. We didn't bother with the Air and Space Museum on the Mall because we had already stopped here.

Tony Mendyk

This place is amazing! What a collection of aircraft and spacecraft. The docents are extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. Admission is free, but there is a $15 parking fee. There is a gift shop and a McDonald's on site. My son and I spent about 3 hours and saw everything.

Chris Rigol

Great visit for Air & Space fans. Many more exhibits than I thought would be there. Beautiful facility. Can spend many hours seeing all they have on display. If you have a flight out of Dulles, the museum is just next door. Make time on your way out.

Michelle Carp

Great place to visit. Lot's of Americas most treasured aircraft! Very easy to get around if you are wheelchair bound or have a disability. The people who do the restorations are the best in the world their research, attention to detail, and pride in what they do shows in all the exhibits! I have been twice. If you are a history buff or into priceless aircraft, this place should not be missed!!!

Russ Wright

Made a trip for work and had time to spare. Decided to spend a few hours at the museum. I thoroughly enjoyed wandering and looking at all the aircraft. So much to see. I could have spent the whole day. Well worth the trip.

Greg Tymms

What a magnificent display of Aviation History. 2nd to none. A MUST do if you're ever in Washington.

Michael Powers

All the aircraft that changed the world in one massive space. If you're a fan of other Smithsonian destinations, you must put this on the agenda. Pro tip: If you're staying in D.C. leave at 9:30a to get there by 10a (open) and leave at 2p to avoid traffic. 4h was a perfect amount of time to have a quality visit.

Silver Tooth

Fun application of science to the hands-on experiences, such as the flight simulator. This museum allowed for anyone to see the space shuttles and planes of old and understand the purposes for building each one.

Lindsay White

This museum was amazing. They have a room dedicated to space exploration that houses a lot of incredible technologies, including the space shuttle Discovery. Beyond that, there are a ton of planes that span the history of human flight. There is a cost for the parking lot, but no cost for entrance to the museum. I highly recommended making the trip!

Albie Bester

An incredible experience. One day is not enough. This was my 2nd visit in a year

Jake

Awesome place. Your is longer than you expect. Bring good walking shoes and plan at least 4 hours to see everything.

Brendan O'Brien

Fantastic museum. If you're an aerospace geek it's a must. Love the layout and the cat walks. Some rare and unique things that you literally can't see anywhere else. Space shuttle Discovery parked right behind the SR71 that flew from California to DC in just over 1 hour... No where else.

Jay Hess

Great day at the museum with my daughter and nephew. Lots to see and do. They particularly enjoyed the hands on stations and got to wear some pieces of space suit! Highly recommend! If you arrive after 4 parking is free.

john woodson

If you enjoy anything air and space, then this is a must see museum. Take your time and plan to stay the whole day. Enjoy the movie theaters with current productions as well as wonderful history presentation to educate enlighten and inform.

Itziar Barat

Very good museum with most of the iconic planes. On top they have the Discovery shuttle! Just for that it is worth a visit.

Thu Ho

Where can you see as many planes as you want? Here. The collection is something beyond time, geography, race, war, peace, earth and space. This place makes my husband running around being happy like a kid seeing his airplanes collection. I won’t upload photos. You should experience yourself. This place is away from Washington center so no many people will have a chance to visit/know about if they don’t do research beforehand. Highly highly recommended.

Tamra Hemke

Great docent; Jack Breedlove was wonderful; he is very knowledgeable & we enjoyed his tour immensely! Everyone was very helpful!! This was worth the trip from Tampa!!!

Ryan Dolce

LOVE IT. Where else can you see a space shuttle and a Blackbird under the same roof? I could walk around this place for hours and hours. The observation tower is very cool. Love watching the planes take off and land.

Thomas Conte

Get in early to avoid the crowds. The place fills up fast. Lots of amazing and historic planes to see, but not a much in the way of hands on.

John Piescik

SR-71 Blackbird. Space shuttle. Concorde. It’s a trifecta! Amazing collection. Enormous IMAX theater. Interesting tower with view of Dulles airport and exhibit on air traffic control.

Great, various planes. Highlight: Spaceshuttle. Main hangar a little bit dark, more illumination would be great to take better photos. Free entrance, only parking. Come early in the morning. Free shuttle bus to IAD airport as well as to many hotels in the neighbourhood

R Grant

So much history and technological wonders. This is a great place to see a wonderful timeline of our aviation lineage. Have to admit though- my favorite part is the tower view. When the landings come in from the South, that's an awesome experience!

Robert Lockheed

Just awesome! I could spend all day touring the area. I think we do better than a Mickey Ds on food though.

Shawn Veinot

Great exhibits. The ability to see all of the planes from multiple levels really adds to their value. I will definitely revisit in the future.

Neil Christ

This rating is only for the annual Air n Scare Halloween event. Pros: free candy stations, cool exhibits, stunning Star Wars themed characters for photo ops. Cons: extremely crowded, long lines for nearly everything, you may not get in if you don't get there at the right time and depending on where you are, your vehicle might be stuck in traffic unable to turn around. Advice: normally a great place to spend an hour or so with younger kids, it's not worth battling the crowds for a few handfuls of candy, even if the $15 entry/parking fee is very reasonable.

Marsh Jones

I was really disappointed in the Air & Space museum downtown. It's oriented at school kids and casual viewers. The "annex" on the other hand is packed with bits of aviation history you won't find elsewhere. And in many cases it's left unrestored. I spent half a day wandering the floor in one direction, and then the other. So many incredible planes.

Clint Hill

Honestly this is a fantastic aviation museum. It's a bit of a hike from DC proper but it's definitely worth it to me. Seeing space shuttle Discovery and the sr-71 alone was worth the trip.

J C S

It was good experience. Good do see many flights. And few of the we try and feel it. You can get pilot experience in cabin. Dont miss this free opportunity. Entry 100% free only we need to pay for car parking 15$.

Cristina A

Fantastic place to visit if you like planes and their story. Good guides telling you the important facts of the planes. The best: Discovery Space aircraft is amazing! Also, the tower to watch the planes landing on the airport.

Jason Hiew

I love this museum, very entertaining, a lot of airplanes from different wars and decades. Love the space section too. Able to learn about how amazing transformation of airplanes over decades, how innovation applied onto the aircrafts, so entertaining and knowledgeable. U easily spend more than 2 hours at this place.

Dhruv Gandhi

Beautiful museum with some awesome aircrafts. The aerospace portion with the Discovery Space Shuttle. It's honestly a bit surprising that the entry is free except for the parking charge. Also, a very convenient McDonald's inside.

Liz Fagan

Absolutely must see this place is great. We liked it better than the DC Air and space. I would recommend taking the free tour. So much history. This museum is excellent.

Margaret Mack

There's so much to explore here! There's WW2 planes, modern planes, any plane you can think of, they probably have it. Not to mention the space section and restoration section of this facility. You could spend hours here and learn so much. There's many shops and restaurants here as well. Parking is 15$, but to get in it's free. Take a day and explore!

Elizabeth Henderson

Wow. History everwhere. Clean. Interactive. Live music. Teaching. A truly wonderful experience. Go after 430 pm and parking is free. No admission charge ever.

Beltin

Truly a remarkable experience if you're a fan of aviation or history it's a must visit place. The space shuttle was truly impressive

Scott Tiedke

If you are into aircraft you absolutely must visit this place! It has aircraft from the earliest days of aviation right through to spaceflight.

Brett M

This place is amazing and has a huge variety of aircraft and helicopters from around the world. Also right now they have one of the actual space shuttles on display which was amazing and a SR 71 black bird right in the middle of the museum. Also this one is great because it's not in Washington DC it's in Virgina, but I think it adds to it's appeal because it's easy to get too and not as much walking as the other ones at the national Mall.

Charles Edwin

Must see place. Humbled by watching the supreme Discovery Shuttle, the black beauty Black Bird, and the sleek Concorde. Many more historical beauties.. 15 minutes from Dulles international airport. Shuttle service is available to and fro to museum. Plan at least 4 hours to be there.

Julien Dhouti

They have hundreds of really cool planes ranging from all eras. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. It also had free admission!

Regina Kamos

Easy commute from Dulles airport by bus for just a few dollars. So many aircraft on display from pre 1920s to the present and arranged by era or war. There is also the space shuttle Discovery and NASA collections as well as a view of the restoration hangar. The observation tower has great views of planes coming in to land at IAD.

Thomas Wyatt

So the only thing you have to pay for is parking, otherwise free to go in. So bring a large vehicle and friends and have a nice time. Location is in great condition, exhibits are clean and well presented. Would certainly come back again anytime in area. Staff were fine, guards were a little lacking in conversation, but may have just been the guards I encountered. Seemed slightly ambivalent, which is fine, they aren't there to talk I suppose. Everything is accessible. Stop by if you have an hour to spare, won't regret it.

Rach Sarmiento

A very beautiful place to visit, especially if you are into Aviation! So many different aircrafts to see and learn about, some you may even never knew existed. There are a good number of restrooms, and drinking fountains everywhere. There also always seem to be a free guided tour every so often. The staff are very friendly and polite. They told us what to do when looking for certain points of interest. There's just so much to learn about! You may need to allot 2 or more hours minimum. The observatory is also a perfect spot if you're into plane spotting.

A.C. Antonelli

This place is heaven if you're even remotely into aviation, aeronautics, NASA, or just plain old history. The Center is home to a milieu of planes from throughout history (and not just American at that), but the crown jewels of the collection are definitely the SR-71 Blackbird and the Space Shuttle Discovery. I've had the honor and pleasure of seeing several of the space shuttles on display, and there are honestly no words to describe how breathtakingly beautiful they are in person.

Lana Jones

Went because my husband was interested and had a little time before heading to the airport. Enjoyed it-- more than I expected to!!

MJ Krugell

This place is just amazing. If did not have to fly back to South Africa I would have send the whole day there. Firstly it is free entry. The planes and other exhibitions are real not fake items. Lots of history to be learned. Well worth a visit. Would recommend it highly.

Abigail Parsons

The exhibits were wonderful! It does not have a lot of interactive exhibits yo hold the attention of small children, but for tjose who love planes and space it is amazing!

Tim Phelan

Please take the time and do the tour. We had a interpreter for my deaf Uncle..she was wonderful and much appreciated. He had a wonderful time learning about the amazing aircraft. I admire and enjoy aviation and highly recommend this Museum ..it is MUST SEE!

Rick Hartnett

Awesome displays from the history of flight. Interesting for kids and adults. Hands on stuff for the kids; lots of history here. Staff is very knowledgeable. Free to enter, $15 for parking. Well worth it.

Ann Moore

One of our favorite places in the DC Metro area. Kids always discover something new and interesting to learn about, even though we've been there many times. They love the observation deck, and were able to "land" the Discovery space shuttle.

Ruby Ross

Wonderful place for air planes lovers and tourists. My son loves this place except for one complaint that he cannot get into the planes and see them from inside. He is crazy about all such things. Theater is an added value here. What a wonderful movie experience.

James Sullivan

the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum's Dulles Airport facility is one of the World's premier aerospace museums. It's huge size allows the covered display of some of history's largest flying machines and aircraft, and the very useful display of groups of related aircraft, a method that helps show development in aerospace technology. Great docents and tours, and a variety of evolving programs make return visits worthwhile. A "bucket list" experience and a must see. (Note: free entry, but $15 parking)

Kyle Cory

Awesome collection of aviation history spanning early years to modern aircraft. A great place to visit in D.C, especially something free.

Hannah Mallory

Love this extension of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. It's amazing to see the actual airplanes and other air craft that did monumental things in history. I've been to this center twice now and I'll be back. I see something new every time just because there is so much there. Also highly recommend riding the elevator to observe the planes flying in to the busy DC airport.

lbhrulestheuniverse

Fantastic variety of aircraft and spacecraft. Not quite the museum of the air force, but it is close!! Plan for several hours if you really want to take it all in. We went through quick and it took us almost 3 hours. Would have stayed longer but had a flight to catch. Super cool place to visit!!

Mary Morrison

Amazing museum. Worth the trip. There is a McDonald's there and a movie theater. Check out the movies as you go in to get tickets. Done miss the space shuttle or the enola gay. The restoration room is very cool. It's free too!

Heart

Amazing air museum. There is so much to see at the location. I really enjoyed the space exhibit with the shuttle. Plenty to see. Large venue. Prices are fair. Helpful staff. Plenty of parking. Location is kind of out of the way from other sites. Well worth the visit if you are in the area.

Magnus Simonarson

Awesome museum. A lot of fun for all ages no matter if you're not interested in aviation or space. Great way to spend a day looking at part of history.

Garrett Hartman

Excellent. I have seriously never been in a better museum in my life. If you like airplanes, spacecraft, helicopters or rockets, you cannot find a better museum in the world. There are various interactive exhibits here and seriously some of the most iconic aircrafts to ever fly. It's unbelievable and it's free. Except you have to pay for parking.

Anh Thu Dinh

Super cool and free museum with real size planes. I got to see the Discovery space shuttle. Family friendly, even has a McDonald's inside. Great place to go on a rainy day. Parking is $15. I'll certainly go back!

Donald Rodgers

Great museum with amazing exhibits. One of the very best aircraft museums in the world. My complaints about the place or minimal and involve the parking and food both of which are priced outrageously. $15 to park in a rural area is just ridiculous. The restaurant inside is a McDonald's where the prices are basically double what one a half a mile away would charge. I realize you don't charge any admission so you're trying to milk everything else you can but really parking that's more expensive than the airport and food that's more expensive than food inside the airport then it's adjacent to his just really over the top.

Melissa Post

This place is amazing! The viewing tower is so neat! Lots of history! Fun for kids and adults

Dan Pazehoski

Great museum for kids and adults. Discovery is a must see exhibit. If you have any interest in aviation or space exploration, you must go here. Plan for spending hours here to see everything. The museum is huge, and you'll want to see everything.

Felix Boccadoro

This place is filled with technology and history. I could have spent the whole day here. It might be because I have an engineering background and a career in the aerospace & defense industry but I think it is more than that. Seeing technology that you may have only seen in pictures or on television puts context into aviation & space. For example: Standing next to a space shuttle is pretty amazing and the info provided answers many questions you may have wondered about. Be sure to check out the Virtual Reality area they have. The flight simulator is very cool.

Danny Mcguiness

Must go! The best air and side museum in the country and its free! They have free guided tours and it's just amazing. It's the museum in va. Best ever!

Paul Carver

If you're into aviation this is a definite must see museum. The best way to visit is to arrive when it opens at 10:30 AM, go on one of the free tours & spend the rest of the day looking around. The only problem that I noticed during my few hours there is that the McDonald's prices are similar to prices at airport terminals.

Nancy Estrada

Make time to visit this place, it's we'll worth the visit. It's huge, has plains galore. They have restrooms and restraunt. It's very nice, clean. Amazing place, will not disappoint. They have a scavenger hunt for kids.

Andrew Conlisk

It is quite amazing to see all the Air and Space pieces. Learning about the history of them is also very insightful. Also admission is free.

Dave Rucinski

Aviation and space buffs will love this great museum. Discovery shuttle is on display and it looks fantastic. Many Apollo artifacts. Guided tours available for those so inclined. Don't miss a visit to the observation tower with great views in all directions including Dulles airport.

Jack Mathis

It is hard to imagine the size and scope of this amazing museum. We have never seen anything like it. It is beyond the air.and space museum in DC.

Richard Furleigh

A spectacular demonstration of human ingenuity, bravery, and engineering. Free tours from guides who share their passion and knowledge of aeronautics. Beautifully restored aircraft from all eras, both military and civilian. A must visit in the area, ample parking, and in my opinion a better option than the Air & Space museum on the Mall while it's under construction.

B-Rye

ABSOLUTELY LOVE COMING HERE! There's so much to learn from here. Not only about our own air space and it's long history, but also from space itself! Personally I feel that this is a place one must visit after checking out the Air and Space Museum at the Washington D.C. Mall to seal the deal. Also this is where Space Shuttle Discovery and the SR-71 Blackbird are located. Go during non-school hours btw to beat the crowds.

Frank

The free tour with James Schier (chief architect for NASA) was four hours long but was great and filled with really good information. I strongly recommend it!

Jun Liu

I love this place. I was lucky to see space shuttle and a Black Bird here, and met and chatted with a pilot of the SR-71 Black Bird. It is inspiring to young or old. For a country with great aviation, this is a place brings people sober, awe and dream for sky and space. We will never be complacent and stop explore space. Solute to NASA.

Alex Robinson

Great Air Museum. Beautiful facility with lots of planes from the beginning to the present. Bring a good camera.

M. Iles-Hunt

Wow. While the vast majority of tourists and even locals flood to Smithsonian downtown, they are missing an absolute treat a short drive out of town towards Dulles airport. If you are interested in anything that flys from any era, then this is a must see. The quantity and quality of things that they have on display will blow you away. I don't give 5 stars away often. This fully deserves them.

Cesar Salvador

Loved this place, our guide was an old gentleman who knew everything about aviation history, I only wish he would do it all in less time, we had time just for his guide and then the gift shop was closed. But all in all it was great seen the space shuttle in person.

Sharon Huggins

So many well displayed air and space craft in an indoor setting! Explanations posted, a lot of room to walk around exhibits, and easy to leisurely peruse and ask questions of knowledgeable docents! Very interesting and enjoyable.

Poon Poon Smith

Must see if you are into airplanes. It compliments the air and space museum. There are free guided tours all day till 2 pm.

Darya Jordan

This is one of the most amazing museums in Washington, DC. It's free aside from fixed parking fee of $15. The museum caters to both old and young: little ones can have fun in simulators and IMAX, older audiences will find extensive and informational exhibits all over. From Wright brothers replica to Discovery shuttle, it's all there. Some dark history pieces coming from all parties in WWII as well to the most recent drones models. It is a tad of a ride from Washington DC but is totally worth it. There is a McDonald's cafe on the premises and awesome gift shop for those wanting to take home DC souvenirs.

Seth Chi

An excellent museum! Well worth driving out to see if you are in the DC/Fairfax area. Like all Smithsonian museums, there is more to see than you likely have time to take in during one visit. The displays are amazing and include early flying machines, military aircraft of all kinds from various periods and countries, a commercial airline jet, a SR-71 Blackbird and a space shuttle. All indoors along with many, many more. It also houses an IMAX theater. We saw the Apollo 11 film which all of us loved. A gift shop with a nice varied selection is on site as well as a McDonald's.

Tanvir Mohammed

Spectacular collection of aircrafts old and new. The entry is free and will surely inspire kids to take up aeronautics or aviation.

Baptiste Wicht

A really awesome museum. The collection of air plane is incredible. And they have a space shuttle. That's really impressive. I just wish we could enter some planes.

Wesley Held

We LOVE this museum. We got there first thing in the morning recently and the kids spent an hour watching planes land from the observation tower before we even saw any planes. The Blackbird and Space Shuttle are absolute treats, along with all the other flying machines and associated exhibits. It would take a full day (or more) if you want to read everything and really check out every exhibit.

Martin G.

You really need a couple of days to fully take this place in. It is wonderfully laid out. Get the scavenger hunt for kids from the information booth. The green screen photo at the space wing is a touristy must. The observation tower is also very cool to watch planes coming in and taking off. The IMAX is a great attraction; I particularly likes the Apollo 11 film. Leave yourself enough time to enjoy it all. Oh....and sometimes you get special guests on the floor like SR-71 pilots that will answer questions from the crowd.

Stephanie Blenko

This was our first visit to the Udvar-Hazy wing of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, but it exceeded expectations! The displays are beautiful and well maintained. The docent-led tour is a great way to learn a lot if you've got the time. Our guide, Bob, made the visit really special.

Megan

Such a unique experience! Right next to the airport, you can see world war 2 airplanes and super tiny and super large airplanes—there’s a huge variety. It also houses the Discovery, one of four viewable spaceships in the US. It’s so interesting to look at tiny one person airplanes contrasted with planes going faster than the speed of sound. There’s a viewing platform that’s free which you can see very far from, which doesn’t cost. It also has a McDonalds.

Thomas Blackmon

Very clean. Wonderful staff offering advice and stories and smiles. This was a highlight of our trip to DC. It's a pretty long ride from downtown so get ready. Get there when they open to avoid the lines for the simulators and the observation tower.

Dustin Horton

Fantastic as an adjunct to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. There are far more aircraft here, with guided tours and some dining options. It's a bit of a drive from the downtown DC area, but it's definitely worth it.

Ahmed Shah

Better than the one at the National Mall. Bigger, more inventory and probably a bigger team of experienced retired military tour guides. Also close to town so you can grab a bite after the tour without being robbed (as in paying too much!) As you would be around the National Mall/DC area.
