Historic Jamestown is Spectacular! To actually see the first English settlement come alive is fantastic with the fort, buildings and what the settlers did to survive. You can feel the history as you walk through the area. It is worth the time you spend there, learning and hearing from the Park Rangers sharing the living history.

Very good stop, so completely different than Williamsburg--what a difference 150 years of technology can make! Lots of big shady trees for dodging out of the sun for a few minutes of respite and a nice breeze off the river. Park Ranger gives a detailed history of the site and includes Native American and First African histories as well.

Mostly outdoors with some open spaces for the kiddos to burn off some xrazy. Very self-guided. You are open to the elements and we went during a scorcher....so there is that. Staff are very helpful and almost everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves. This is a federal park-so you can use your passes!

Reading a book or seeing a documentary is interesting but being in the same place as where history was made allows you to really empathize with the experiences had by those before us. Anyone interested in the story of John Smith and the settlement at Jamestown must come to this place in addition to the visitor center and Jamestown Settlement where the recreated camps and ships are.

A little dubious at first with the $20 pass for Jamestown/Yorktown, but hadn't been there in decades. So glad we went. There was a tour at 11 am by a historian from Preservation Virginia that was absolutely wonderful. Mark challenged us, surprised us and inspired us. Well worth the time and expense.

The national Park service has done it again. Another great experience for our family. Their interpreter in the archaerium was fantastic and had them mesmerized. The food at the Dale house was fantastic. The wind blew a ham sandwich over and they replaced it with a smile. Highly recommend a few hours time well worth it.

Jamestown is amazing! The settlement is true to 1600's life. The interpreters are very knowledgeable and able to discuss their craft with everyone. I love going there and to historic Jamestown. It is history come to life. I highly recommend the trip.

The last time I was here it was more than 10 years ago. They have discovered and are displaying a while lot more artifacts more than ever. The ground is well maintained and clean. They are also restoring the old church as well. The entry fee of 20 dollars for adults is a little high in my opinion but it is what it is. The kids under 16 are free. Cool place to take the family.

This is a must see if you're in Virginia. Very informational. You'll learn a lot from the guides and the sites are very realistic. It will give you goosebumps to be in the exact spot the very first settlers where. There is archeological sites in which you can see for your self what they are finding.

This was so great. Lots of history, great reenactment, and not too hug. The kids dig was a hit for my kids. Interactive history getting the kids involved. The cafe has a variety of choices for sandwiches and salads. vegetarian items available as well

Was very disappointed was not worth the $20 we were charged to get in with a school trip. Charged other parents $5 that were in the same group. Basically was told we wontl't a chaperone just because we drove our self. Would not recommend people to waste their money. The Jamestown Settlement was way better.

Neat place. We stopped here on the way to a vacation in Maine. We wanted to site see to break up the 20 hour trip. It's 20.00 per adult to enter, kids under 15 are free. Historic Jamestown is the original site of settlers, and you get to walk through to see the current ongoing excavations, some restoration and recreations of the buildings and fences. The museum there has nice finds from the digs, including some of the bodies that were buried there during the starving years. Jamestown settlement is its own interactive interpretation of life and times during the historic Jamestown population. Jamestown settlement had its own location and entrance fees. We enjoyed walking through and reading the placards. We will plan a future trip to see it again.

The Visitor Center for the Jamestown site. Not to be confused with the Settlement. A film, a few exhibits and artifacts. Restrooms of course and a gift shop. Entry way to the Jamestown Historic site. Partly run by the Federal government. Remember to check the weather before going. Also remember to check the websites to see what discounts are available for you.

I prefer the National Park of Jamestown over the commercial one down the road. The National Park generally has more updated and current information on the colony. Much of this is due to the fact that you can usually run into a few archeologists digging something up who are happy to any answer questions you may have.

This was an interesting place to visit. If you are a history lover, this is a place you want to visit. There is a museum with a lot of artifacts. It will take see time to see everything. The people dressed in period time are fun to talk to and have a lot of knowledge to share with all visitors.

The tour was great and the tour guide did a great job teaching us about the 1st African slave brought from Africa over 400 years ago...only reason why I didnt give it 5 stars is because while enquiring about purchasing tickets at the counter the white older gentlemen was really rude ...both were and I'm not gonna assume it was because of my color but not sure and dont care but did not appreciate the rudeness from both of these older white gentlemen

I love visiting historic Jamestown! Great place to learn about where our country started. It has artefacts, exhibits, tours, classes, etc. Keep in mind if you go during the summer months it will be hot, muggy, and have a lot of bugs flying around. It is a swamp after all.

It's the first English settlement, and it does a good job of covering that through ruins, exhibits, and even remains. I will not debate the indigenous issue here, but this site does a good job of covering its subject matter.

Well worth visiting for history aficionados. Not just an archaeological dig. The wooden fort and some brick foundations have been reconstructed over where the ruins were found, so it is easier to picture what early Jamestown was like. Co-owned by private Preservation Virginia, so there are two museums on site, one run by National Park Service (good video & historical displays), and a private museum with many artifacts. The private museum addresses several archaeological mysteries from the site, including cannibalism, an early shooting victim, and a Catholic reliquary found buried in the grave of an early English colonial leader, Capt. Gabriel Archer, in the chancel of an Anglican church that once stood inside the fort. (Spanish Catholics were rivals of English Anglicans in the race to settle the New World.)

Interesting to hear about and see the work being done to literally unearth the very beginnings of English America. To hear about the contributions made by the white English inhabitants, the native Americans already there and the Africans who came a bit later. All made the important sacrifices and contributions to bring us to where we are today. We enjoyed both the outside tours and the museums and plan to go again.

Great national park. On the actual site of the original fort. The archaeology museum on site is top notch with a lot of super cool artifacts. It's an active dig site, so things are always being discovered. Highly recommend exploring this place, driving the colonial parkway, and then checking out Yorktown battlefield. You can do it in one day, but I wish we had spent an extra day here.

Historic Jamestowne is easily one of my favorite historic sites to visit. Not only is it an amazing and important piece of our nation's history but unlike most historical sites it is actively being excavated. So unlike many other sites where you see a static end result, here you can literally speak to archaeologists actively digging to uncover more about the site and our past. We've been to the area 4 times and have visited each time. And every visit has taught us something new!

The historical impact of the first permanent colony has been saved for the visitor's interpretation. You are able to walk on replicas of the actual ships that sailed across the Atlantic to give you a feeling of what the settlers actually endured. You can walk thru the fort and feel what it was like to be all alone; left to deal with unknown weather as well as the Indians who approached the fort.

The park is so amazing! The history is incredible and well taken care of. The visitors center has a great 17 minute long view. See it! The junior ranger program is really good my kids loved it! And the badge is a nice wooden on. At Jamestown itself you are welcomed to a beautiful view of the water and all the old structures. There are big mulberry trees around as well.my kids loved eating them as we talked to one of the archeologist. She great and talked with us for about 45minutes about what they were doing and answering all of our questions. It was really great. Absolutely visit the GLASS HOUSE as well, it is So Incredible! They make all sorts of glass things from bottles to oil lamps and ornaments. The glass artists were very friendly and interacted with us while we were there. He answered all our questions and even asked us a few, it was fun. One of the artists said he had been at the Jamestown glass house for 24years! That is super cool! He seemed to know just about everything about the facility and the glass. My kids had a great time watching him work. The lady in the little gallery was a great multi tasking master. She was checking people out with their purchases AND commentating on what the glass artists was working on without missing a beat. It was just as fun to watch as the glass artist! All and all it is a MUST SEE!

My ancestors lived here, worked here, came to do business here and participate in representative government. The National Park rangers are very helpful as is the staff and signage. You can wander at your own pace or choose a guided tour, attend a program, learn in the outside and inside museums. With my senior pass, it was only $5 for a week's admission. Some of the pics are taken from the James River.

This is a great way to learn the history of Jamestown. That being said it was way too much walking for my kids ages 5 and 2, and while they really enjoyed the Ed Shed they were really too young to stay interested in the history. The tours that were being conducted sounded great, I would have enjoyed them! Just keep in mind that young kids do not have much to keep their interest here and it is a lot of walking. And DO NOT in anyway CONFUSE THIS WITH the JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT that has a reconstructed replica of the fort, Powhatan village and ships along with people dressed in time period and demonstrating things throughout the settlement.

Another great visit to this very important site. This trip we took in part of the archeological tour and spent extra time to drive the scenic nature loop. Couldn't believe how nice the weather was for late May. Low humidity and temps in the 70s. Made for a great day and visit.

The staff is very caring and friendly. Archaeologists were actively digging for new antiquities and unearthing the deeper hidden parts of Jamestown. If you are going during the summer, bring something to drink or stop at the cafe and stay hydrated as there is a lot of walking.

Not what I was expecting. Its 20 bucks to get in and then there is really nothing. The old church was closed. If your into history then you may really enjoy this but I was here to get some good photos and there is nothing here. Also this is NOT the Jamestown settlement. That is down the road a bit and has a different admission price. That is far more worth your hard earned money and its cheaper. There is no signs to say which one has the 3 ships. Lets be clear, the ships are at the settlement and not historic Jamestown. Go there and don't waste your money here.

We always enjoy both the driving tour and the walking around the original settlement. You will pass the glass house on your way here. Stop and visit the Glasshouse! These are run by the National Park Service. There is also a Jamestown attraction that is nearby, but is privately funded. They have a replica fort and the replica of the 3 ships there.

Not a lot to see, but understanding the history and realizing you're seeing the sites and standing in the same place where the first settlers made their lives is pretty awe inspiring. For that feeling, I recommend visiting. If you're looking for a lot of interactivity or you aren't up for a bit of walking, you can then you might want to skip this area and head to Williamsburg instead.

Nice park, Good history of use of region unfortunately it includes slavery. Thoughtful mentions of a dark time in human history.
