REVIEWS OF American Civil War Museum- Historic Tredegar IN Virginia

angela zamberlan

Very interesting overview of the civil war, with lots of information

Connor Vaught

it's a very well put together museum in a nice modern building. I thought there would be more exhibits, but overall I was impressed.

Daniel Breach

Not a huge museum but highly informational, friendly staff, and a very objective take on the Civil War. Offers a student discount, and cheaper if you pay online (also includes a package to see the Confederate White House, which was also interesting).

HEIDI K

Very disappointed how the place is set up.and its obvious the purpose is to make the southern soldiers such horrible human beings. The way Richmond is being run it doesnt surprise me. And I noticed alot less Confederate artifacts in this museum verses the old one.

Karen Marshall

Very interesting. Learned a lot.

Bradley Davis

Great opportunity to learn and grow about this sad war. Detailed and thorough.... and sad. Hopefully we will never resort to this division again. God bless America!

Helen Harris

Great place to enjoy history

Steven Curry

I wouldn't go again but some cool stuff. It was smaller than expected and not many artifacts

Mark Zusman

Must see, different perspectives

Don

Way more information than can be digested in one visit. Great displays

Tim Shaver

This museum presents a chronological view of the Civil War, focusing on the social and cultural ramifications of the war. The interactive video screens throughout allow you to examine specific events in depth. The artifact-centric exhibits have different levels of explanation; read the large print for an overview, or continue reading the fine print for more detail. The museum is still working out a few kinks in their labelling of artifacts, but don't let this deter you. This museum is definitely worth the visit.

Khat hat

it's ok, a little old fashion, but lots of information. some exhibits out of order

Mike Allgaier

Unique displays. Can't have a war without cannon balls.

Kelly Green

Great history

Christopher Flaherty

Outstanding museum, beautiful, thoughtful, covers alot of ground.

Eric Planck

Great museum, great displays.

Miriam Gilligan

Do the free museum next door. The who complex makes it worthwhile

Brett Knobloch

This museum is well organized and takes you through the war, year by year. There are interactive boards as well as personal stories told through artifacts, which are fascinating. I learned a lot more about the war than I thought possible.

Monica Dailey

There are multitudes of Civil War sites & Musems but these two in Richmond are a must see for Civil War Buffs. Superb interpretation at the new site. Complex war is made more understandable in displays at the old iron works site. The rest of the museum will be moved to this site. The White House next to the old museum & worth seeing. American Civil War Museum- Historic Tredegar is a great place to start to learn about the American Civil War especially in relation to the Richmond Battlefield.

Paula Nale

This museum, along with it's companion, the Tredegar Iron Works, is one of the finest museums of the Civil War era in existence. The history is presented in a very objective way, offering points of view from both sides, so to speak. I found it to be very historically accurate. Definitely a must do when in Richmond!

Jodilyn Owen

Good museum, $$$ but educational and good representation of slavery, the facts, the narratives of the south, and the struggle for freedom for all that was the focus of the civil war.

Terry Power

Of all the cites dedicated to the Civil War, this museum has a reasonable balance as to why it happened.

Sharon Lopez

Really thought this museum gave some interesting info on the civil war! Super text heavy though. You had to read a ton - the biggest exhibit is a time line which details the causes and happenings of the war. I still learned some things I didn’t know. And would overall recommend a visit!

Kelly Pence

This is another place that you can go and it is free. The staff their is friendly and very knowledgeable. We had a gentleman explain the full process of getting a shot off out of the cannon.

Stacy Litchford

Nice little museum on the beautiful riverfront. There are a couple of videos and lots to read about. There are collections of period objects and clothing but not too many. This makes for a good hour visit. The store has a lot of neat items. I really enjoyed the outdoor space and old buildings. Don't forget to walk across the bridge and read the civil war quotes.

valarie walter

Interesting, heartbreaking, memorable.

Tom Wolf

Really a great display. Extremely interesting. It is a shame that as a nation we performed these atrocities back then but haven't done better today. We also took the guided tour of the White House of the Confederacy. Quite impressive. Well worth the time and money. We will be back.

Catherine Nicholson

Very informative. Reflective of ou r Richmond history and our gountry.

Jim Vincenti

Very interesting. Good information about the Civil war

Matthew Nyce

Really cool place, well worth 15 dollars to get into. There is a lot of free park service stuff you can look at, the newly revamped private museum has a paywall but also a lot of incredible artifacts for the civil war nerd. My friend was geeking out over General Beauregard's coat, and zi got to stare at this crazy British artillery piece that fired 70 some javelins when you shot it off. Lots of really neat relics, another striking example is the anchor from the CSS Virginia (Merrimack) out in front of the doors. Check it out!

Marli Benedict

Love the Foundry Series. I live in the area and really enjoy that they have so many events! A must see if you are visiting Richmond.

A E Compton

Having grown up in the South, I have seen my share of Civil War museums. In fact, there is one less than five miles from my own home in Missouri. To me, the Tredegar site was very striking. However, the number of items on display was lacking. The graphics used in several areas for reading used font too small, or with not enough contrast. Banners that were festively hung from the rafters had writing on them so high up, the words were impossible to read. Some graphics had been scraped and could not be read. Overall, it was a good experience, but did not meet my expectations from those who recommended it. I look forward to seeing the second 'White House' nearby, and Appomattox. Compliments to the welcoming staff who were most gracious. I was also impressed with the very large selection of books for purchase about this time in our history, as well as replicas of period items for sale. Very nice. Tredegar is right by the river, which is another plus. A great example of how our country harnessed natural energy for manufacturing. Virginia had so many families divided by loyalties to conflicting sides. My suggestion is to include the threads of those family tapestries. Four stars only here, because there are thousands of relics available for use in display. As a marketer by trade, I would suggest expanding the items and leave the flashy graphics for another time. The 'bars' with facts that guests were encouraged to pull were unwieldy and out of place. Our nation deserves a bit more effort on this particular National Park. We went in a weekday and practically had the place to ourselves. That was luxurious.

Marilu Horning

Good experience. Great views

Rev. Ted Smith

Worth the trip & the history lessons.

Art Espey

Outstanding - tells Civil War story in a whole new. You can almost feel what the nation was going through at the time. The gut wrenching choices and decisions that led to both intended and unintended consequences.

SG

Nice place to spend some time

Mariette Hollins

New museum is very well done

Joanne White

Nice museum.

Patricia Bradby

This museum is truly something special. The stories of the Civil War that you've never hear await. Stories of African Americans, stories of women, stories of children...make sure you have plenty of time to really take it all in. The new building is so well done and I look forward to what rotating exhibits are to come!

Karl Brenneman

Great locale and history however for $12 they should make sure all of their exhibits are legible. Some were worn to the point where they could not be read.

Mary Slattery

Very informative and wonderful exhibits of War memorabilia.

Google User

Should be the National abolitionist museum or the history of slavery museum. If you are true Civil War buff, this is not the place for you. More focus on causes (from their view) than the actual war. You can pick up the political correctnesstone they have. I would not recommend and will not be back. Museums jobs are not to take away history or even interpret history. It’s purpose is to be a custodian and guardian of ALL history. I wouldn’t waste my money.

Matt Rasmussen

Really well put together exhibit! Interesting artifacts from the war, and looking at how each side approached the different economic and wartime concerns that were facing them was a great framing device Bouncing back and forth between sides of the exhibit was sometimes a little much but didn't lessen the overall impact

Mario - S

Love it but a little too expensive

Ben Ruga

Well done

Patrice Jones

Great museum. Great place for kids to learn.

Mike Brace

A great little museum with a very balanced view of our bloodiest war to date. If you have any interest in the War Between the States this is a great stop. Drop any preconceived notions at the door and prepare for a great visit!

Savannah Reardon

The museum was very well done and informative. The location was great in that it was located in a place that manufactured weapons during the civil war. We talked to a NPS volunteeron the second floor who explained and showed us all about the cannon and it’s history and their history at Tredgar. It was a great experience that he made better and that added to the wonderful experience we were having already! Visit if you’re in Richmond! Location is wonderful as it’s right in Richmond and across the street from a pedestrian bridge crosses the James River at the rapids. It was about 90 degrees on the day we were their and the breeze from the water cooled it down considerably.

tolsti1

The American Civil War Museum an incredible and indelible discussion of the civil war. The exhibit walks you through the troubling years of our nation’s darkest times, and brings relevant understanding of the topics and issues at hand without overburdening the sometimes controversial war. You will be impressed with the multimedia presentations, which are as dynamic as they are instructive. My children young and younger found the various digital exhibits exciting and interesting. All in all, I felt a new respect for the issues that plagued our beautiful country, and the bravery and determination of both sides. I expect to return to this museum and study the exhibits more carefully (maybe when I don’t have a toddler running around).

Kelly Smootz

Beautiful place filled with history

Kevin Mathiasen

It goes into detail from the 1700s straight through the end of the war. It has a focus on the events that created rising tensions leading up to the war. It really gives you a good idea of why we had a civil war. It is definitely worth a visit.

Brian Moore

Today was the grand opening of the new location, amazingly done.

Rachel Swain

Good museum, wish they had more memorable (even if it's not authentic) lots of information so lots to read.

Matthew Beaverson

A beautiful museum built in a building that breathes historical significance.

Desmond Suarez II

Great museum but a bit small to justify the price.

Mel Dodd

Great Historical Records and Memorabilia

Tom W

Thought-provoking and engaging exhibits

stephanie hanna

Nice but the visitor center seemed like he was aggravated because we asked why there were no Confederate flags any where.

Mrs Tucker

I had a great experience. The tour guide was amazing, and any questions I needed answered was answered. The place was clean, curteous and a welcoming environment.

A Brown

Really informational. I would wait for awhile to go they are doing a big change on the Museum. Still under construction. But is a nice place to see history

David M

Very nice museum.

Lindsey R

I highly recommend the combined admission ticket that allows you to go to both Tredegar and the White House of the South, it's a better deal, and personally I'm a big fan of historical landmarks. Tredegar is a beautiful museum that really captures an interesting perspective of the events leading up to and throughout the Civil War. A must see for any US History fanatic. Plus it makes a beautiful wedding venue. We actually saw a couple getting married as we left the building.

Philecia Shanks

Very informative and very well done!

G Aquino

We bought passes for all three Civil War museums and this was our first stop. We visited the other one in downtown Richmond several hours later, and the last one in Appomattox a day later as it was an hour's drive away. Of the three, I consider this one the most evenhanded and thoughtful in its treatment of the sensitive subject of the Civil War. It did a good job of raising critical questions without making anyone, regardless of persuasion, feel uncomfortable or defensive. It is also commendable for the noticeable symbols of reconciliation, particularly the statue of President Lincoln, which commemorates his visit to the city after the Confederate government evacuated it. The place was a busy construction site when we visited but there's a makeshift walk path leading visitors to the museum building. Parking was easy and free.

Michael Schifferli

Super dated. Really unengaging experience. No personal connection with the broad contexts. Many closed or non-functioning exhibits. Good thing the new museum is on the way!!

William Gruendler

Just opened in May, 2019, this remarkable museum, nested amidst and within the ruins of Tredegar Iron Works is state-of-the-art. Artifacts donated to the original Confederate Museum built at the Confederate White House since the late 1800s have been relocated here and many organized in splendid displays. The only problem with them is that, for the most part, the descriptions are written too small (in white on reference-illustrated black cards) and placed too low behind the glass to be legible. I literally spent an hour on my hands and knees reading about "who-gave-what-that-belonged-to-whom-and-when"!

Rachel Campbell

Lots of information and pieces of history. I would have liked to look at the historic building outside but it was 95 degrees out.

kimberly mays

Simply any. Well it together and insightful.

Angela Walker

Very informative. The museum gave the reasons why the Civil War occurred. It allowed your reasoning how it could have prevented. What a horrible tragedy. The sadness of it 153 years later what have the US learned. History has not corrected the issues. We need to soul search and realize we are in it for the long haul. We are all Americans.

Emily Patch

Our group was a Civil War buff and a Civil War novice. It was a great experience for both! Lots of well-presented basic information, but great artifacts and a detailed timeline of all major events for even the most well-versed to learn something. Located in a beautiful area and the experience was even more amazing because it was located inside a historic building. Friendly staff and park rangers too!

Brandon Leady

This is a decent museum to check out in the Richmond area. Situated in a great spot downtown, no trouble to get to or find parking. Plenty of free things to see and learn about, which kept me busy while I was there. The shop had some interesting items, including several books which looked to be a great read. Watched a couple of documentaries in a fairly comfortable theatre and perused many historical items on display, with plenty of information on each. Staff was friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable. Spent several hours here and did not see everything available.

Ana Echeverria

Great place to learn

Todd Porthouse

Well put together museum with outstanding exhibits. Enjoyed the narratives that played at different points. Definitely worthy of a return trip.

Graham Martin

Great place for history and memorabilia

Kenn Blevins

Amazing location

Sally Wyatt

Not much there except for plaques & other things to read with very basic history. Get more info & photos from the internet. I normally love anything history but very disappointing & not near worth the $12 admission fee.

jd holliday

Great exhibit. A well-stocked bookstore

Linda Ross

Wonderful! Well executed and very informative.

James Newberry

I recently visited the executive mansion and museum near VCU and walked around the Tredegar site under construction, which produced the iron for canons and the Merrimack or CSS Virginia. It's definitely worth seeing both Richmond locations, as well as the Appomattox annex.

Kathryn Civilette

Huge. Interesting. museum

Randell Norton

This museum has the most thoughtful approach to the civil war, its cause, and its effect on different people and parts of the country that I have ever seen. We'll laid out and attractive. It is a great compliment to the National Park Service museum next door about the effect of the war on Richmond. It should be even better when the restoration construction at the Tredegar Iron Works is completed.

Anthony Monioudis

This should be a must see if in Richmond. Very nicely laid out. Plus by the James River for outdoor outings when done.

Al Veeck

Great place for history

bruce heidel

Very nice museums...cool buildings!

Rodrigo Avila

Just visit. Amazing!

Nancy Butler

Very interesting and loved the firing of the canon

Dominique Flores

It's nice. It's a lot more quaint than I was expecting. It's a good way to spend an hour. It's a good refresher into what I had learned in middle school and such, but nothing really new.

Rochelle Alberti

A great overview of the Civil War and Richmond. Very informative and interesting even for younger children.

Rahul Das

Great place for visit...ticket is bit pricey..

Cheryl Weber

A lot of history here good exhibits. Don't forget the Tredegar Iron works next door.

Kyra Newsom

Lots to read about. Very nice layout and an unexpected visitor input on issues brought up from the displays and information presented. Check it out.

Lloyd Gilbreath

If I could give zero stars I would! Well ,"civil war museum" in Richmond formally" The Museum of the Confederacy " today mind you I thought i was prepared for the changes but i wasn't, I'm am totally disgusted with what they did.the displays were horrible , they had union artifacts mixed in with Confederate artifacts and of course everything was about slavery or colored troops in the union. They even had a black trooper behind the suit president Davis wore if you looked at it you wouldn't even know it was his suit until you read the fine print. And to top it off the last thing you see as you leave the the so called museum is a KKK hood .every Confederate family that donated artifacts should demand them back! Fake history what is disgrace of Richmond and the Southern Soldiers!

Steve Marshall

Very interesting.

gloria dean

It was wonderful, very informative..lived in VA all my life ..glad I finally went

Sherrie Ange

Not as interesting as I thought it would of been.

breakingbisley

A really interesting museum. Displays many points and facts about how the civil war affected the USA. As a tourist, I enjoyed this visit. I would recommend giving this a visit if you are not too conscious of the civil war history.

Geneva Sipe

Don't waste $12 going through the "museum ". Do the free part in the Ironwork building and consider donating for it's upkeep. The older building seems to have knowledgeable national park employees who are very helpful. The new building has rude, clueless ticket takers who find it amusing that you got screwed outta $12 bucks.

youngy1919

Fantastic Museum! lots of great information and well laid out.

Annie Meyer

Such a wonderfully informative, interesting, intriguing, historically rich place! My family has visited a couple of times, and my children have attended homeschool events (they absolutely loved it!), and we look forward to visiting regularly. There's lots of great history to be had here! P. S. The"new" Grand Opening is currently scheduled for May 4th! Make plans to join us!

Mary Mustian

This a great museum. The National Museum is wonderful and the State Museum is beautiful and after it remodeled.

Jim Too

Interesting museum, we bought a combo pass with the Confederate White house tour.

Christian Schilder

Very good museum. Maybe a bit small, but definitely informative. Of course it is located in a former CSA state, but I guess VA is special. But as always: stay critical with the matter. The small cinema is amazing. The interactive screens are very helpful, too. I would recommend going there.

Nicole Chase

Very nice walk and also beautiful scenery but while i was walking acroos today i seen dog poop on the bridge. I love animals but atleast pick up the dog poop smh. Other than that i enjoyed my visit.

Arpana Verma

Well done and enjoyable. Near the James River so a nice waterfront walk or dip is easy too.

jessica weller

My husband and I really loved this museum. All of the exhibits had small plaques that told what every item was and where it came from. Like how Stonewall Jackson was shot but at the same time another bullet shot through a notebook that was in a mans pocket. They have the notebook on display. They also cover all aspects of the war.

Mari Ju

We bought passes for this museum and the Museum of the Confederacy. This location presents the chronology of the whole war, and even before and after. A LOT to read. Not many artifacts, but you can see them in the Museum of the Confederacy. We spend 1 and a 1/2hour. The parking is free with the entrance fee.

David Gronowski

This place was well done and it truly was very impressed I must see

Des B

Exactly what you would expect on display. Actually a very small museum with all things considered.

Mary Scott

Was there for my Uncle's funeral reception and they did a great job with the handling of it . My Uncle's name is Buford Scott. He will be missed by all.

Jason MacGregor

This museum is showing our history as being focused on slavery instead of the real reason for the Civil War, it was about Constitutional Rights

rvagourmet

A hidden gem of Richmond which is looking to be more inclusive and to narrate a broader story of the Civil War and its place in national history. Great waterfront views. New venue opening next year with event and exhibit spaces.

Dennis Fuller

Most interesting. Helps put this time in perspective

Estelle Hamilton

A beautiful outdoor setting and nicely presented indoor exhibits. Just being there in the old iron works gives you a feeling of the history involved. The National Park side is a good introduction, but The Civil War side is where things get interesting. I'm a visiting Yankee, and I think their presentation of the causes and aftermath of our civil war is pretty thoughtful and "balanced". No treatment of it will make everyone comfortable, and in fact probably shouldn't. They don't dwell on the abominable, but they also don't sugar coat it. Be prepared to be challenged, but keep an open mind.

Michael Anspach

Very interesting museum. We expected to find it slanted toward a Confederate viewpoint, but actually it was very balanced. Lots of interesting historical items here. Well presented. A most worthwhile stop on our journey.

Marco A. M S

great History info

Samuel Walters

Awesome place. Very educational. Lot of things to look at and read

Hawkins Dale

Fine for children. No significant insight into the historic Tredegar cannon works. And they seem to lack any sense of moral outrage about slavery. "White children" are depicted, for example, sending "care packages to loved ones in the military." Why "white" in this sentence? And half of the interactive exhibits were broken.

صايل المنصوري

Is good

Gail Helm

They recently moved from downtown to the old Tredeger Foundry near the river. New facility, limited collection on display. What they do have is well presented, logical and placed into context.

Freddie Smyth

For being in a capital city, I felt this museum was a bit on the small side. Beautiful historic area, though

Angie Stead

Great educational experience

Christina J.

Wowsers! As a history major and lover, specifically during the Civil War period back towards 1619, when the first Africans landed in Old Point Comfort (Fort Monroe), I must say this museum is absolutely phenomenal!

Anne Chapman

Great display of artifacts and stories. Well done.

JC Cook

A great place to learn about the civil war. Lots of information and amazing artifacts.

Farmer TV

The Museum of the Confederacy was founded in 1894, 29 years after Lee's surrender in Appomattox. It is located in the historic home that served as the White House of the Confederacy, two blocks north of the Virginia State Capitol, which the Ladies Hollywood Memorial Association saved from destruction. It opened as the Confederate Museum and White House of the Confederacy in 1896, on February 22, the date of Jefferson Davis's inauguration. The historic home was named a National Historic Landmark in 1963 and Virginia Historic Landmark in 1966. A new building next door was built in 1976 to house the expanding collection (and a 12-year restoration of the historic home began). The Museum maintains a collection of flags, weapons, documents, and personal effects related to the Confederacy, and offers tours of the home restored to its 1861–65 appearance. In 2006, museum officials announced that neither the museum nor the home would be moved. The museum houses more than 15,000 documents and artifacts along with 500 original, wartime, battle flags from the failed Confederate States of America. Among the thousands of other important pieces found there are items owned by Jefferson Davis, Robert Edward Lee, Joseph E. Johnston, John Bell Hood, Thomas Jonathan Jackson, Simon Bolivar Buckner, J.E.B. Stuart, Joseph Wheeler, Wade Hampton, Lewis Armistead, and Raphael Semmes. The provisional Confederate Constitution and the Great Seal of the Confederacy are also housed there.

Lynne Hendrick

Great museum and the grounds are beautiful! Be sure to have a back up plan for parking. The lot is small and on nice days very crowded. We have to park and walk about 10 minutes to get to the museum.

andrew

Pretty cool. Lot of stuff to look at.

Maksim Panov

I'm not a museum person, but I did enjoy the unguided tour. We ware greeted by a park ranger, who gave us the layout of the museum. My wife and I enjoyed the experience. Definitely recommend checking some local history! Unfortunately we did miss the guided tour.

Nick Bauer

This museum is very well done. The exhibits are a great mix of artifacts, stories, signs, and audio-visual components. The building is very nice and clean. The air conditioning was fantastic on a hot day, too. The staff is welcoming and friendly as soon as you walk in. My group learned a lot we did not know about the Civil War. Highly recommended.

Charles Stein

This place is awesome. Lots of knowledge that the youth and young adults need today. The one that forgot why the civil war was fought. The staff were great and very helpful.

Myron Ware

Fantastic museum!

Donna Sewell

They have consolidated collections from around Richmond into one venue. Parking lot is free and close. There is an entrance fee. The museum now concentrates on both sides of the War Between the States. Interesting books in the Gift Shop. There are guided tours or you can wander on your own. Please visit if you are interested in the history of our country!

Rachel Yantis

A recently renovated and beautiful museum that does an excellent job of telling the story of the civil war without falling into the trap of so many other civil war museums fall into of glorifying the old south. They also had an artfully assembled exhibit on the development of money/the US treasury that provided insight as to how the civil war gave us the US dollar.

Virgilio Munoz

Outstanding place for visit and know out history

James Bell

Seems like it's missing some keys for me. But very nice.

Brendan Pope

A great place to bring out of town friends! Located right on the river, it offers great views and pretty walks nearby. I suggest making a day out of touring the museum and nearby Belle Isle and Brown's Island. The museum holds such unique and interesting artifacts in such a beautiful and historic building. I especially loved all the old photographs of various places around the city back then. I only wish they had a student discount!

Samuel Sturm

Very well organized and presented. But not very large or extensive for charging 10 dollars per a person.

Denis Dineen

Thorough and thoughtful presentation of the varied perspectives on an event of importance to any and all Americans.

todd barger

Slanted towards the South. The Civil War was all about states rights! Would you fight for your home, your state or your country. I loved the examples of slaves who fought for the South. I walked out. I should have asked for my money back.

Rebecca Wesson

Awesome look into the civil war era. Son was captivated about building being built on original

chris jensen

This was great. I learned a few new points of history.

Sir Garand

Me see beeg cannon with lots of little holes in it.

Sherry Atria

Great place to visit for kids and adults. Staff very knowledgeable. Great outdoor spaces to explore and beautiful indoor museum.

Dale Woodson

Displays are a little out of date, but it's great to see a little different view of history than the hate our public schools try to teach us to have toward the confederacy... Enjoyed the cool outside machinery and river views the most.

David Branch

Gott love some knowledge.

Shawn Crutchfield

Walking was worth it shot a cannon. Everyone paused.

christianna mancha

Great museum that's continuing to grow

Darin Partterson

Loved the exhibits, so much information and interesting artifacts

Allen Parsons

According to Jamelle Bouie in The New York. Times, the objective is “to tell an inclusive story of the war in hopes of dispelling some of the myths and misconceptions that still dominate popular understanding.” So, while they have displays of tools people used to kill each other, and they have information on major battles, military leaders, and political pivot points, you are exposed to many personal stories of ordinary people as well, black and white. Provides a much fuller picture than many other Civil War resources.

brang ja

The best place to learn American civil war ever. 5star for me.

Kathleen Maynard

Such a wonderful place to host events like the Richmond Folk Festival.

Marisa DiMarco

New exhibits, great tour by Curator, will be back to really delve into all the new information, etc.

Andy Bickel

The American Civil War Museum - Historic Tredegar provided information about the battles that took place around Richmond. The museum spreads across two buildings; one of which was restored from the Civil War. Many of the exhibits include reading plaques explaining the significance of the exhibit. Learn about life during the war, destruction of Tredegar, life on the battlefield, currency and cost of the war, and unrest on each side. Several small theaters are available explaining the history of the battles near Richmond. The museum provides special lecturers on occasion about the civil war. Check out the museum's website for more information. There is a fee to park in any of the museum lots. Free street parking is available on a side street. The museum also participates in the reciprocal museum program with certain museums; providing for free admission if you are a member to one of the participating museums (as of June 2019).

Redline

Easily the best civil war museum I've experienced and one of the best museums I've ever been to. It was interactive and kept my attention throughout the whole walkthrough. I pride myself in knowing more than most when it comes to American history, but it taught me quite a bit I was unfamiliar with in the civil war. I will definitely be returning with my children when they're of age.

Dawn

This museum is fantastic. It is perfect to spend a few hours, and I would definitely add it to any Jamestown or Williamsburg vacation. If you are interested in the Civil War, it will deepen your knowledge. If you know nothing, it is easy to absorb. It is very well done, newer and low-key. We like it a LOT more than the Washington D.C. museums. I am lucky enough to live in the area now, but if I was planning a trip nearby I would definitely recommend making a stop.

Pat Hotch

Worth the visit. But take your time.

MRB Banks

Nice little museum in the hostoric Tredegar Iron works. So much history in Richmond. Right near the entrance to Brown's Island walking bridge. Can be a whole day adventure.

Michael Hill
