I was so surprised how big the museum was. We spent an hour looking at the history and sculptures... just amazing. We were a group of 34 that we pre arranged our visit and Vikki the Director and her team were wonderfully accommodating. The gift shop was great, I bought the cutest marble earrings and bracelet. The movie theater was really nice.. Hall of Presidents was amazing as well. Highly recommend. Tip.. very chilly inside- bring layers!!

Michael Ley

Three short videos, samples of commercially available marble and small, not very good sculptures displayed in large, poorly lighted spaces surrounding a large, uninteresting "gift' shop. All for a minimum of $7 per person (senior price).

I recommend this place if you want to know the history of marble and how it is formed and cut. It is now just a museum but 30 years ago when I visited it was in full swing.

Not what we expected it to be. Mostly a sales room.

Visited the Vermont Marble Museum earlier this summer with my children. They had so much fun exploring the Earth Alive exhibit and seeing the different marble sculptures on display. And I was able to purchase some beautiful marble gifts from the Vermont Marble Museum gift shop for an upcoming wedding and teacher gifts.

Mary Oppy

Good for history and art lovers. Amazing beauty and variety in rock. God is an artist.

Amanda Broseus

This place was a neat little stop to hear and see a bit of history. Good for the older crowd for sure. Favorite parts were the Tomb of the Unknown Solider display and the hall of presidents, although it's missing several. I would recommend they speed the video up a little bit, it takes to long to cycle through pictures and almost puts you to sleep.

We were just driving by on the way to Stowe, and saw the road signs to this place. It was very educational. It was a good stop.

The museum is open this year (2014) through mid-October every day from 10am until 5pm. I was surprised to find that the Vermont Marble Company had such a broad reach across the United States, in that nearly every state has buildings whose marble columns or stairs or facades were fashioned in Proctor VT. What a fascinating history housed in this historic factory building, and engaging museum!

When my wife and I travel we usually Use AAA guide books. This museum wasn't listed as a gem so we didn't expect it to be as good as it was. It's definitely a gem. Don't pass it by if you're going to be in the area.

I thought l was going to be a bit bored, however l was quite surprised that l wasn't. Lots of beautiful sculptures, carvings and all the different kinds and cuts of marble and slate was amazing. Learning how many immigrants came to the United States to use their artistic talents was awe inspiring.

The interactive room designed for children was engaging and the remainder of the museum is in need of curation by an engagement specialist and a historian. You will find some displays unlabeled and unclear. The museum was created from the perspective of power and wealth and you won't find any mentioning of the story of the workers except for a history day project a teenie bopper created on cardboard siting in front of the gift shop. Because their stories are lacking, its very difficult to have an emotionally intelligent experience here.

John Perrin

Lots of marble exhibits to see, some very detailed. They have an artist in residence doing marble work. You can try to chip some yourself.

Tags the tour. It has interesting historical and unexpected materials used in everyday products.

I was a bit disappointed. I think I expected to see a lot more about the process of mining marble. What I found was a lot of sculpted marble (side question: why does the hall pf Presidents stop at George H.W. Bush?), a lot of information about the monument that was created for the tomb of the unknowns in Washington, DC, and a collection of marble from around the world that looked more like a kitchen and bath showroom.

What an incredible gem in the dead center of Vermont in a town called Proctor where the Vermont Marble Company was formed and located decades ago. Marble, waterpower, and huge sand deposits, enabled it to become the Nations largest company. History of bounds within this Museum. Not only was the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier fashioned here in this very building but also all of the headstones for the Arlington National Cemetery come from Vermont marble. The ledger of sales is viewable. Numerous videos throughout the display make for great interaction and the Hall of Presidents (bust carved in marble) is an amazing read as some unique and unknown facts about each president is revealed along with his term of office, birthplace, and death. Plan to spend some time as there is much to see. Plus the gift shop is a great place to purchase marble products. I highly recommend a visit. - Director New England Mineral Museum @NEMMrocks

Great tour! Great gift shop! So much history in this little town.

Please note that the "VERMONT / What to see" web site suggests that the museum is open all year. NOT SO. It is open only seasonally.

Oh my how interesting. Who knew? Go!

I enjoyed every minute of my visit to the museum, and highly suggest visiting for all ages. I loved all the products in the store, the hand made jewelry was just incredible!

Susan Will

Amazing history...very interesting.

Stone is mother nature's buitafull work, and they have plenty of examples. Took in the establishment a few decades ago when it was still cutting stone and you could watch from a birdsnest vew. Now it is mainly a Museum and gift shop. Must see, check captions on the photos. In fact the entire town proper looks like it is all made of marble. Proctor is a nice quiet place, up the hill is another Church. And across town used to be an art school, maybe it's still there, IDK. Next to the Museum is a current Stone Cutter, Mr. Johnson can usually do anything you want or need. If he could not provide the product needed, he'll know who can. Mr. P. Says take in the area and you could be amazed on what's left.

Helena Vargas

There is a fee to enter the museum and the gift store is very expensive. The location is far off any many roads.

This was very interesting. Wow? I learned a lot about the history of marble from Vermont. Put this on your tourist list whenever you visit the VT.

The young lady that checked us in was very nice! We enjoyed learning about the history of the marble from Vermont. We enjoyed talking with both lady's in the gift shop as well. The marble bridge you cross to get the museum is very beautiful and don't forget to check out the waterfall behind the museum as well.

We had a fantastic time at the marble museum. I took my family of 9 here for the museum tour (7 kids under 12 y/o) and they all got something out of it. I think our kids were the only ones there at that time and the staff was so nice. The kids did a scavenger hunt to learn about marble mining and the museum. The resident sculptor took a few minutes from his project to show us how he carves and the process of turning a stone into a beautiful art piece. My wife got some great ideas for our future kitchen and bathroom from the one area. The kids enjoyed complimentary popcorn and at the end of the tour they all got a polished marble egg for completing their scavenger hunt. Vermont marble is a cornerstone of this country and it was fantastic to have my kids learn about it.

Very extensive, informative history of mining marble in Vermont.

A very unique look at the history of a once great industry. It's beautiful and yet sad when thinking about how an industry transformed a sleepy location into a mining power house, only to leave behind a charming and sleepy town. It's the story of many post industrial cities. The museum is quite interesting and offers quite a bit to see. It's a nice way to spend the afternoon, whether passing though or not. The low price of admission is definitely worth it and you might even find yourself buying a peice of marble art or other gifts in the souvenir shop.

Self guided tour through museum/old part of factory. Unfortunately the carver wasn't in that day so the kids couldn't try their hand at chipping marble. They do have a room with some age appropriate fun things for kids. They weren't interested in the history movie so I didn't get to see it. Interesting to learn how many products contain marble dust. I was hoping they'd have white marble jewelry in the gift shop but there was none.

Charlotte Brindley

Very interesting and educational.

Amazing museum. One of the best kept secret in Vermont museum. Well worth the visit. Took a few hours to wondering. Learn a lot from great descriptions. Go on a sunny day as it's a bit chilly in the fall. They close for the late fall.
