Wonderful, historic house with beautiful grounds. A real landmark.
Just okay... Pretty much a must do if you are in the area, but at $23 a person, it's a bit pricey if the weather is not perfect. The gardens and trail make it worth the price. It's a very nice old house, but not a mansion so it only takes about 45 minutes to go through the 8 to 10 rooms that are open. The Pullman Palace (train) Car, take about 5 minutes to walk through and the gift shop another 5. We took our time and were in and out in a little over an hour and a half. Like I said I find that a little pricey!
Very interesting historic site. Worth the extra to pay for a tour.
Very cool, especially the organ demo. We also loved being able to tour at our own pace.
We enjoyed the tour. I didn't realize that Abraham Lincoln had a son that was that wealthy. He was president of the Pullman railroad car.
Cool mansion. Good history.
The views are great. The staff is very knowledgeable, the tour is wonderful.
The grounds are very pretty and well maintained. Also the staff is so friendly and kind. When we were at the animal barn by the lake and it started raining they came down and picked us up.
Hildene was an absolutely beautiful mansion. I truly enjoy history and was impressed with their background on Robert Lincoln. We enjoyed the guided tour of the home and the gardens. However, the speech at the Pullman car could be improved. I did not appreciate her historical context. Please state the facts from history without adding your opinion or becoming political. If you must be political, please post it on a sign and individuals can read it if they prefer. The town of Manchester was beautiful and the people were so friendly.
Worth a stop, very interesting venue, very informative staff, beautiful gardens
It's beautiful there. And the gardens are lovely. Interesting artifacts.
Awesome place and could not rate the staff any higher. They were so nice and very helpful. Plus this place is ideal for handicap not a lot of walking and easy to move through the gardens.
Worth a visit. Spectacular piece of property, beautiful gardens, and a historic home with lots of memorabilia. Hosts weddings sometimes, and you'll see why.
A great stop for any history buff! Flower lovers will also be thrilled with the flower garden behind the mansion.
Beautiful grounds and great experience! Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. We drove out of the way for this visit and it was well worth it.
an exceptional historic site. inescapable if you are in the area.
Very interesting place! The house has a Lincoln exhibit, including, for example, his famous stovepipe hat. The grounds are extensive, wish we had gone when the garden was blooming though. The views are gorgeous. I can see why it was used by the presidential family. Make sure you walk through the train car! It has been refurbished in its original style, and I've never seen anything like it--truly gives a sense of the time and place.
Beautiful grounds! Loved learning more about the history. The Pullman train was so amazing! The staff was very attentive and helpful. My dad and I had a great time!
We had a great time. The addition of the Pullman Car, and the ironic history lesson it tells, was a reminder that we shouldn't make judgements about the past with the mores and values of today. Thanks so much to all the efforts of the Friends of Hildene.
Beautiful grounds
Beautiful place, great conservation!
Just majestic
Views are amazing. House and grounds are pretty much what I would expect for an old house museum.
Amazing park and hikes. Entry tickets are for $23 per person.( Sep 2019). Well organized place. They have trails all around the estate. Don't miss the Dene. You can walk there, but they have a tram service every 30 minutes. The wetland boardwalk in the Dene is an amazing place with breathtaking views. There is a farm with alpacas, sheep, rabbits , pigs, cows etc.
Beautiful place to visit. So much preserved from that period. Must see.
Stunning property, beautiful home.. lots of history. We had no idea we would be there almost all day but we were. Lots do to and see.. even a little farm with baby goats. Not a lot of walking as they have golf carts with drivers, highly recommend and its worth the money.
Magnificent! Don't miss the goat farm just down the road from the main house. Cuteness overload for young and old, alike.
Very interesting. Beautifully maintained. A must see if you're near Manchester Vermont.
We enjoyed our visit. Place needs some paint. Guide was helpful. Restrooms clean. Georgeous setting. Pullman car very interesting. I will learn more about Robert Todd Lincoln.
This place is a historical jem, inside and out. Not only is the house amazingly beautiful but the grounds and the views are absolutely gorgeous!
Great place to visit. Beautiful property, great history, amazing views. A definite must if your visiting Manchester.
A beautiful historical place with breathtaking view.
Very beautiful and historic home. I love how the pipe organ is built into the home.... Nice personal items from President Lincoln....
Much better than I thought it would be. Guides were OK and answered any questions. Beautiful grounds and property. Interesting things about the Lincolns not many people would know.
Beautiful. Need time to see all.
Beautiful!! Second time here. Would come back again!
What a nice place the staff was very knowledgeable a lot of information on Robert Lincoln. Beautiful restoration. It's $23. A person plus $7. For guided tour. So it adds up quick if you have a family of four.
Place was well kept and the docents were very knowledgeable. A little disappointed in the “Dene” -we expected to see more, but overall a nice 3hour visit.
Very interesting exhibits throughout.
Historical information. Nice to know.
Wonderful site. Gorgeous gardens.
This place was amazing. So much history...things you just don't learn in the regular history books. And our tour guide.....SUBURB
Had a great time here with the kids.
The house is beautifully staged with its original furniture and informative plaques. Docents at house and train car are friendly and knowledgeable. Goat farm and creamery were fun to visit (we went on Memorial Day weekend a couple weeks after many goats had kidded, so we had the added benefits of seeing adorable kid goats). Beautiful valley views from the house gardens. Lovely gift shop. Can't recommend it enough.
Beautiful and the staff was so knowledgeable. Definitely have to go back and do some of the trails.
Cool to see the inside and gardens, but there's honestly not much to see besides that. I also saw some farm animals and fields, but it was so hot and you have to do A LOT of walking if you're not going to use a car or bus.
Beautiful, peaceful and history
This home is a museum and a farm, and has plenty of walking trails. You can easily spend the day here, and learn about Robert Lincoln's life and some interesting things about his father, Abraham. There is also an original Pullman car (private train car), a farm with alpacas, chicken, pigs, sheep and goats.
Wish we stopped by earlier than 3pm since it closes at 4:30pm. You can easily spend your entire day here and get your moneys worth ($23). There is lots to see and hear, and miles to walk around
Everything was well taken care of, and the guide was knowledgeable! They really have a bit of everything here! This was great for 4 generations of my family. Everyone had a blast, we got some AMAZING pictures and no one was left out of the fun! We enjoyed the history, the gardens, the observatory, the goat barn is definitely worth riding the trolly for... The goats are so funny, and they have detailed description of what everything is, and the process by which they do everything that they do! Thank you
Another view of life as it was. Beautifully restored and our tour guide/ docent was very good. A wonderful value and brought the history to us.
You would have to try really hard not to like a visit to Hildene, the summer retreat of R.T. Lincoln, the only surviving child of Abraham Lincoln, and his family. RT Lincoln served in several presidential administrations, but he is best know for his association with the Pullman Railroad Company, to which he eventually succeeded as president, and which was the source of his wealth. The centerpiece of the estate is the house; a masterpiece of understated elegance built during the closing years of the Gilded Age. Situated on over 400 acres, there is much more to see and do than just visit the house, such as the gardens and farm. The jewel of the exhibits is a restored Pullman railroad carriage, which is located a few hundred yards from the main house. Highly knowledgeable docents are stationed throughout the estate to lecture as well as answer questions: they demure, however, if questioned closely on RT Lincoln's labor practises and politics during his tenure at the Pullman Company. Otherwise, enjoy!
Loved this place. I only had 2 hours so I only was the house, garden, and Pullman car. Planning to return to walk the trails, etc. Historical, educational, and lovely grounds to stroll through.
Beautiful, but overpriced by a factor of two. Beyond those in the welcome center, the location of bathrooms is a well-kept secret--something that matters most when it becomes urgent and the welcome center is a long way off. (Don't count on the transportation vehicles to arrive when they are supposed to.)
Great history of this house. It's a property built by Abraham Lincoln's Son.
Very interesting to see how things changed from one generation to the next. This is truly a mansion. The views are spectacular.
Beautiful grounds and home.
The president's son's residence for many years. He was a great business man.
Well kept part of USA history, plus the bonus of a working goat farm and a Pullman car
Fun historical place, views that the park employees get every day. Would be a 5 but I asked the host if Lincoln stayed there, she said she didnt know?
Way too expensive but snuck a picture before we turned around!
Love this place. A little expensive though.
Breathtaking views. Definitely recommend the guided tour as you will learn so much history. the grounds are gorgeous and if you're into hiking there is so many beautiful places to explore while you're there. We were there for over 4 hours. There are goats on the property and they sell delicious goat cheese. Definitely a must-see if you were in Manchester
Beautiful, educational historic location. Well-maintained and updated. If you've been there, it's fun to go again. The house is unchanged, but there are new and updated parts of the property.
this is a great place to look at quintessentialnnew england scenery while also learning about one of the most powerful families in America. I got a picture of Abe Lincoln's hat and that made my day
Great place to go to, but entrance price is extremely high. I've been to few Vanderbilt mansions for quarter of the price.
Beautiful So much to see ..mansion, farm,Pullman train car, Really worth the trip
Interesting and beautiful place
As a wedding photographer, I can say that this is one of my favorite venues! The ceremony place is amazing with stunning view of rolling fields and the famed Battenkill River Valley 300 feet below. Sergey Lapkovsky Photography
Stunning beautiful home
Great place to visit. Well maintained. Great staff. Beautiful gardens. We will visit again soon.
Our family really enjoyed this historic summer retreat. Worth the price of admission, but wish there had be more context about the Lincoln family in general.
We were impressed with the way Lincoln family home was introduced. The property became original and sincere storyteller about people and their time, the country, past and present of it. The story told was both teaching and entertaining. Our appreciation goes to the people who brought it to us.
I loved walking the grounds and speaking with the staff. Every step of the way we were warmly welcomed and put into pure fascination. The Pullman cart, formal gardens, and organ are all amazing points of interest that should not be missed.
Great staff, the history is very interesting, the house is great with all he original furniture, and the farm is so much fun. In case if you are wondering, it’s worth the money.
Beautiful and serene place! The house, the grounds, the railroad car and the goats. A great experience and possibly the highlight of our week in Vermont! Like everyone else said, the baby goats steal the show.
A nice place
Beautiful estate. Docents are very knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
Amazing spot. We explored most of the location and it took about 5 hours. Very friendly, helpful staff who are eager to give you more history and info. The gift shop has incredible options too.
I can't say enough good things about this place. We originally didn't even have this on our list of things to do but it was recommended to us and we're glad we went. The house, railroad car and gardens are beautiful, with lots of great historical information. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and provide lots of great information. There is a goat dairy on the property, which all the adults and kids in our party loved. We got to watch them milk the mothers and we met baby goats that were born this week. Originally I thought the price for an adult ticket ($23) was a bit pricey but we were there for 3 hours and definitely got our money worth. Highly recommended.
A hidden treasures - don't miss the Pullman car
Well maintained, pleasant and helpful staff. Only a few things to see, but plenty to fill an afternoon. Second time here with plans to return once the trails are ready for cross country skiing.
Very beautiful home and grounds
I loved the self-paced tour. I'm one who likes to see every detail, so being able to stop and read all the signs and take in all the history was a lot of fun. What a great place to spend a day with a family!
Great tour, mostly self guided, with well places guides to answer questions and provide information. The trams were wonderful to get around the sprawling estate. The Pullman car was amazing to see and hear the history. Recommend stopping here if you are close.
The best! Amazing place! Atmosphere is just peaceful and nice! After this we love Vermont very much! Must visit place! Must! Summer time it’s just unbelievable! And gift shop very nice! So many interesting things there! And they taking care about bees
This was a very interesting place to visit. There was one docent at the train exhibit that said some odd things that disturbed the group we were with, but the rest of the visit was great.
Amazing Place. Great views of the mountains, gorgeous garden, cool history. A must visit if you are staying in the area. I took over 50 pictures.
Beautiful home and well preserved. The Pullman car is a walk back in time
I was here for a wedding, and what a beautiful place it was. The views are fantastic and grounds kept up very well. We were able to go into the actual house before the reception and it was fantastic being able to see such a wonderful piece of history. I just wish we had more time there. Will certainly be going back!
An amazing story behind the preservation of a historic jewel in the Green Mountains. Abraham's only son raised his family here and has promoted much of his father's dedication to early education here. Fantastic gardens amd views. The staff is among the most accommodating I've encountered in my travels. I recommend you consider hosting your wedding party there. Tent and catering service is top notch for all functions.
This is something not to miss when you're in Manchester, especially if you've grown up visiting Lincoln sites.
This place is so scenic in fall! Awesome views.
This a beautifully preserved home, built by Abe and Mary Lincoln's only son to survive to adulthood, Robert Lincoln. He was president of the Pullman Car Company, and the community has added a spectacularly restored luxury Pullman Car on the premise. There is also an adorable working goat farm to stroll through. We couldn't resist purchasing the local goat cheese from the gift shop. The house has panoramic views of the Green Mountains and beautiful gardens. Inside the home, you'll see original furniture, including a large unique organ that, when played, can be heard throughout the home.
Beautiful place to visit
Beautiful! Worth the drive. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful.
It was a very interesting place. Learned a lot about Lincoln's son and how he lived. The home is beautiful definitely worth the money and time.
We visited Hildene on July 6th and 7th of 2019. It took us 2 days to see all that Hildene has to offer. Besides the home of Robert Todd and Mary (his wife) Lincoln, which I’ll save for last, there are many things to do. My advice to anyone visiting is to arrive early especially if you only have 1 day to spend at Hildene and you want to see more than the home. If you plan on spending 2 days, save your receipt from the 1st days admission to enter at a reduced rate for the 2nd day. First of all the entire staff is knowledgeable and courteous. They go out of their way to answer your questions or provide insights into the history of and the activities going on at Hildene, the sustainable farming and gardening, the animal husbandry, the Pullman Company, and the Lincolns themselves including Abraham and his wife Mary Todd. There are 2 tram cars that take you anywhere you want to go on the over 400 acre property. Both trams leave regularly from the visitor center. You may choose to walk to the sights. We chose to pay the additional fee for a guided house tour that was led by a woman named Nancy. You may also choose to tour the house on your own as each room has a written narrative. In our opinion the money was very well spent. Nancy was one of, if not the best, tour guide of an historic home we have ever encountered. What was supposed to be an approximate 45 minute tour turned into an hour and a half as Nancy enthusiastically answered our groups’ questions.
So much to offer, plan on spending a whole day if the weather is nice. Don't miss the Pullman train, gardens, farm and giftshop in addition to the house.
Loved visit
We enjoyed our trip to Hildene. We arrive later in the day and we're not able to see all that it has to offer. We were able to tour the Lincoln family home and found the staff to be quite knowledgeable and the Mansion to be very impressive.
went here during the summer but i really want to come back in the fall. my second visit here in 2 years and they updated the site. added the farm grounds. all the staff were wonderful and the addition of the farm is great. this site gets better and better. don't plan on a quick stop. there is way too much too see. we spent the whole day from 9 am to 4 pm and we weren't bored for a minute. this time we did the extra tour of the house and the girl was wonderful. this is a must see place.
Beautiful place full of history and amazing views
If you're a history buff as we are this is a must. Originally built by Abraham Lincoln's oldest son Robert, this grand home is something to see. The fully restored Pullman car, the goat barn, and the grounds themselves are something to see.
An estate of some historic significance, lovingly preserved and cared for by a large staff on a beautiful slice of land nestled among Vermont’s Green Mountains (Hildene being an old English term for hills and valleys, with water, is a well chosen name for this estate). I don’t think, however, that this place is at its full potential. At 23 USD per visitor, the youth classroom ought to be open all year with age appropriate historical lessons about Lincoln and his legacy and his family. It should have more frequent classroom events. There should be an on site cafe, which I believe are in the plans. The tour of the house is excellent, but some video and multimedia guidance would make the self guided tour even more enriching. The goat farm is lovely but the young teenager tending the goats was not even remotely interested in being a guide for us even in the most informal sense. It’s a working goat milk dairy which is lovely - perhaps a twice a day tour ending with a bit of a sample and a chance to purchase the goat cheese being made and aged on site would be a nice treat for visitors going out of their way to visit the estate. I give it 6 out of 10 for living up to its enriching educational potential and 8 out of 10 for the loving preservation of this beautiful place.
Beautiful. Go see it. Not the best for children unless they are very well behaved. Docents have many good stories you will enjoy Make sure to see and hear the player organ
Great house tour, top notch.
It is a beautiful place, if ever anyone visits Vermont be sure to include this in the itinerary.
Tour guides were so knowledgeable. You learn always something new about history.
The peonies were beautiful - so well cared for!
Amazing experience of The Lincoln Family Residence with rooms still intact from when they lived there.
Oh what a gorgeous view!! Friendly staff. Take as little or as much time as you like. Trams available when you get weary.
Very historical and beautiful grounds. Pretty well preserved, though a bit expensive. Make sure to visit the Pullman car. Very friendly tour guides
GREAT tour... very educational too. Beautiful views.
If you have time this is a must see. Such beautiful grounds and a ton of history and pictures.
Too much money in my opinion, but if you're into this and have the money, it's not bad.
Wow! Most folks don't know Abe's son, then granddaughter lived here. Beautiful spot. Quality attraction. Great town.
I was really amazed how this beautiful ancestral home preserved for decades with it's original furnitures. Have a beautiful garden outside...and the farm was absolutely worth the trip. Very accomodating and informative staff...recommended for all ages to visit.
Great trails and historic buildings. Easy and affordable to rent snowshoes or cross country skis. Friendly staff
Worth visiting if your near Manchester and are interested in history.
Very interesting and informative.
Cute goats and nice tour.
Great walking trails. Lovely grounds. Informative tours. Limited food options at gift shop. Lovely picnic area. I would pack a lunch next time. Limited parking.
Lovely home, property, goats are cute. Nice video about the restoration of the Pullman car.
The Hildene guided tour was extremely informative. Ann was so knowledgeable of the property and the Lincoln family. I would recommend this site to anyone in the Manchester, Vt, area. And definitely pay the extra 7.50 for the guided tour... You won't be disappointed if you like history. Also, take time to see the Pullman car.
Need to spend 2-3 hours to get the most from Hildene. Well worth it. Very interesting! Staff are very helpful. Probably not great for children under 6 however, except animals in the farm part.
This is really interesting. Take guided tour, don't miss a thing.
Friendly and informative staff, very interesting place to visit.
It’s a beautiful house in between two beautiful mountain ranges. Taconic & green mountains. I am sure the place would be even beautiful during fall season. Lot of activities to pass a day
A very worthy day trip, amazing grounds and the house is immaculate. Awesome professional staff and very knowledgable.
We visited on our way home back from Woodstock. Definitely wouldn’t miss it. The grounds and the home are beautiful. The view alone is worth it. We got to mean newly born goats as well!! Beautiful piece of history.
Exceptional Hospitality!!!! While the grounds and view of the foliage in the mountains is absolutely spectacular, the real gem about Hildene Estate is the Top Notch hospitality that I experienced there. As a wedding vendor, we know that the we are not the main focus of the day and have come to expect all of the attention, care and even smiles to be reserved for our newlyweds and their guests when working with wedding venues and day-of coordinators. This was not the case when I showed up at Hildene Estate. From the parking attendant who smiled and told me where I could load-in the band's equipment to having a warm green room for the band to relax in during break times, every single need that we had was met with grace and we are so happy to have had such an amazing experience. While I can't remember everyone's name there that assisted us and this day so memorable for us, be on the lookout for Carmine, Nick, Julie, Parker and Bess....and if for some reason they're not around I am certain that you will be in the best of hands with whoever you will work with there!!! -Mark King Of Hearts Band @kingofhearts.ent
This is a GREAT way to spend a day. A bit of walking, but they do have trams. The grounds, garden and home are stunning. Two working farms & a boardwalk across the marsh, all a wonderful experience.
It was so cold the day we arrived but we thoroughly enjoyed this place so much! The staff is friendly and helpful!
Great place to visit and very knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Surprisingly interesting. The Pullman car exhibit, with the focus on the porters, was outstanding. The location and the grounds are lovely.
Historical home of Lincoln's son. He was also Head of Pullman Company so they have a restored first-class Pullman car on site. All of the staff were helpful and informative. Delightful place for an afternoon visit.
Beautiful home! Wonderful volunteers and signage, amazing grounds and great easy trails.
Absolutely beautiful, the admission you pay is well worth all the things you get to explore. You can roam almost all of the mansion, the gardens, goat farm, and several trails. Views are breathtaking and there's lots of historical goodies. Definitely would recommend!
Great historical building with friendly people and beautiful grounds
A lot to explore and learn about at this location. We expected to spend an hour or two, but ended up staying most of the day. A must do when in the area with kids!
Wonderful museum to explore and learn about Vermont's link to Lincoln, organized labor and the Civil Rights Movement.
bit spendy but lovely grounds and fun goats
If you are into history and beautiful places then make sure to visit this historic site.
Gorgeous property and grounds, delightful prone, and mouthwatering cheeses
Excellent place to visit, and enjoy the outdoors.
We stopped in to visit the baby goats and the Pullman car. Both my little ones throughly enjoyed each expirence. The staff is amazing, kind and so helpful! Would love to visit the home next time.
Great attraction. Don't miss the ride to the farm and the bridge. Also you have a chance to look at the house from the inside and get an impression of the life back.
I visited worth my wife during the Fall season and the place was amazing! Great walking paths and the history of the place and Lincoln's son was intriguing.
Classic early 20th country house. Historic Lincoln memorabilia with majestic mountain views
Great experience wonderful history. Thanks for the memories.
Absolutely beautiful!
Fascinating place. Lincoln's son did a fabulous job sitting and constructing the house. Go on a good day as much of what you see is spread out around the grounds. There is a tram to help you get around. It is handicapped accessible and for that they get kudos.
Beautiful grounds to take in some breathtaking views and history. Friendly and accommodating staff helped plan out a wonderful day at this gem in Manchester. There is also a Pullman luxury train car to walk through, which is rare to find. Fantastic experience, highly recommend if you're in the area.
Great place, especially if you like history and love exploring yesterday
Absolutely amazing! To see the home with all of the original furnishings was quite impressive. Truly beautiful home. To see some of Abraham Lincoln’s personal belongings was especially nice. It is hard to imagine someone constructing a 8,000 square foot house back in the day. A lot of history here. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Highly recommend
We came to see the gardens and the goats. Learning about the house and family was very enjoyable too. Admission is a little high, but we got in free with our NARM membership card. You can walk from place to place, but they have a trolly that runs every 15 minutes if you have difficulty walking hills or distances. Cindy really loved holding the young goat, even though it ate one of her buttons. Staff here, many of whom are part time volunteers, are just super friendly.
For history buffs.
