Beautiful restoration of a lovely and historic artist’s summer retreat. We loved the grounds, the home and studio and especially the art. A fabulous find!!! The guided tour gave us wonderful insight.

Beautiful place and art, but the people running it made comments that made us feel awkward because we looked poor, and they mainly want to sell art

I spent a good part of the day at the Maynard Dixon living history museum in Mt Carmel. The Dixon living history museum is a elegant south western museum. With many new SW Artists represented. As a profession photographer who admired Ansel Adams images and was friends with Maynard Dixon. The photographs on display this spring 2019 at the museum is first rate. The exhibit in the museum from the Hiller & Powell expedition is an amazing collection of early photographs of the native people of that time. 116 original albumen photographs by Jack Hiller from the 1872 John Wesley Powell Expedition. Executed between 1872 and 1875, these images depict native Americans in the region surrounding the base camp of Powell in Kanab,Utah and the surrounding areas of Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Northern Nevada and areas along the Wasatch front. From a historical perspective this southwest museum should not be missed if what to learn more about the history of this land.

Beautiful place

Nice site but no information inside and of the homes or structures. The temporary Hillers exhibit was top notch and that is worth stopping for.

The Thunderbird Foundation For The Arts is continuing Maynard Dixon's love of the area and arts. The art gallery hosts several different shows throughout the year. They currently have John K. Hiller's Utah Tribes Photo Exhibit. It has very old photos of the Indians from the area. The wrap around porch with its rocking chairs and beautiful view begs you to sit and relax after visiting the show. They also offer artist symposiums if you are an interested artist. I plan on returning regularly and recommend this day trip for the historical information and to understand why Maynard Dixon chose this area for his summer retreats from Tucson. This quaint spot is located just North of the Mt Carmel, Utah junction on Hwy. 89.

I love Maynard Dixon's work and highly recommend a visit to his home. There is a gallery on site that has an incredible selection of artist's work for purchase. If you are a collector, artist or just a person interested in the area or Dixon himself, this is a delightful and uplifting destination.

Maynard Dixon did beautiful paintings of the southwest during the first half of the 20th century. This was his home and studio - the current owners, artists and art dealers themselves, built their own home next door, and have restored the original buildings. Artists come for inspiration and workshops. Docent led tours are available, or you can explore on your own. To top it off, they have a half dozen RV campsites for artists or visitors. If you are in the area, stop by - you'll enjoy it. A beautiful location.

Mary England

Wonderful gallery and Historical roadside stop. The gallery had good diversity and selection of items for sale. The homesite/museum of Maynard Dixon was quite interesting and well cared for.
