REVIEWS OF Cove Fort Historic Site IN Utah

I think this place is interesting and worth a visit. The reason for only a 3 star? It was a weekday when we arrived and only one other family was there. The docent caught up to us and stayed a few feet behind as we walked around. We didn't have any questions and requested to just take a few pictures. She followed us around to the point we felt uncomfortable so we left. I guess a couple of mid sixty people need security.

Jeff Osness

What a wonderful place. We had such a great time exploring the fort and learning about the wonderful history of this great structure. Makes me want to build a fort ;)

David Sensenbaugh

Great place the learn about pioneer history. We camped overnight at the Adalade (sp?) Campground that's nearby and went here in the morning. There's free guided tours by elderly volunteer missionaries. It's got a lot of museum pieces, videos documenting the historical importance of the area, and they have some pioneer style games set up for kids. Fun place to spend a couple hours, not the whole day, though. There's also a nice picnic table area on the lawn if you've brought food. You can't buy food there.

ken jones

An awesome piece of Utah history.

Johnny Brose

Stopped here on our way down to st. George to give the kids a a break. Wasn't too excited for this site but it was pretty cool seeing the living conditions back then. The whole site has been restored to what it was before it burned down! Be careful with the bees flying around.

Kim Dahl

Great place to take a rest stop and have a picnic while seeing an interesting 19th century historical site. The tours are free and great for kids and adults. Highly recommend.

Greg Rentschler

Great place to visit. They show you a video of how the place became a fort and what they had to go through. Then they take you around the fort. The way they constructed some of there building, pure craftsmanship. You will not be disappointed.

Scott Smith

This is such a historical place that I have driven past so many times and finally stopped, glad I did. The guides took really good care to explain and show us around.

Amelia Amos

This was a hidden treasure. We stopped for gas and decided to take a few pictures as the fort was closed. To our surprise, one of the care takers, Elder Wayne opened the fort and gave us the best educational tour of fort. It was more than we could have imagined...the fort experience is definitely worth visiting. They have some original items from the 1800s. It was so nteresting to see things that were used then compared to the technology of today. Thank you again Elder Wayne for being genuinely kind and turning our drive by stop into lifetime memories.

Eliza Thomsen

Awesome experience ! The admission price is free and the docent was knowledgeable and friendly. There is a small amount of parking available for trucks. If you cannot make the uturn from the dirt area (camper parked on other side) . There is plenty of room to drive through the parking area with a 53 foot trailer.

This was a great stop for our family! The hosts are very nice and while it is ran by LDS this tour is focused on the history of the fort. The restoration is impressive and we really enjoyed the tour.

Stephanie Gudmundsson

Worst ever tourist spot. Just wanted a 10 minute stop and take some quick pics...they wouldnt let us. Said we needed to watch a 15 min. movie to go on. Then a tour guide when i specifically said i just want a quick walk and to take pics would not stop talking and telling stories. I again asked...she got upset and said this was a museum...i get that, been to many and was never required to sit and listen to someone drone on. Couldnt even get pics...we took one because she would not get out of the way. I couldn't get out of their fast enough...with all the reviews i was certain it would be a lovely spot to enjoy a little time with my boy.....nope some old woman who wouldnt let us take pics, quickly peek into some rooms and who kept talking and talking. What a waste.

Stewart Campbell

If you have an hour this is a great place to stop with little kids. Bring your own lunch and eat on the lunch tables we're lay out on the grass underneath huge shade trees. The tour is awesome as well!

Sara Kirby

Great stop to make with your family. They've gone through great efforts to make everything period correct down to the smallest details. It's a very fun and educational stop. There are picnic tables here so bring lunch and hang out a while!

Down to a Science

It’s pretty fun don’t expect an amusement park though

Nate Rasmussen

It was great to learn about the past and about the Pioneer history of Cove Fort. They had many rooms which were recreated to be as authentic as possible. There were very few certifiably authentic pieces though. It was a fun experience all around.

brayden johnson

Didnt know it was run by the church. Would've liked to just been able to go at my own pace

Larry Warkentin

Historic site tours and clean, well-maintained restrooms!

Ronald Prothero

Great tour and informative. Learning of the history in the area kept the kids attention and even had them talking about it later. They also recieved a spinning toy they played with in the car as we traveled.

Sarah Gunter

Love it!!!! Such a great lunch spot an an amazing tour from some awesome people ❤️

AL Brown

A tour guide will be assigned to your party to lead you around (there’s no by yourself time to explore) and share Interesting historical info about settlers. Emphasis on hardiness and civility of occupants, but little about why the fort was built in the first place other than builder was “called” to do so. Indians and the conflict with them are missing from the narrative.

Corona Ngatuvai

Beautiful memorial to the industry and sacrifice of early settlers in the area. Especially touching is the account of local groups digging holes for telegraph poles and maintaining them to ensure communication channels were open between Salt Lake City and Saint George.

John Wray

This is a marvelous stop for anyone traveling I-15 between Beaver and Filmore. The historical information is great and gives a rich background on the pioneers of Utah. Whether you're LDS or not, it's worth the stop. The senior couples that tend to the Fort are wonderful/very knowledgeable.

slimnsom97

Once you enter the parking area you are welcomed with soft, beautiful music and then greeted by some of the sweetest volunteers ever. You are given a free private tour of this historic fort. My kids and I were fascinated as we looked the furnished rooms and marveled at the fort walls built with extremely strong mortar and lava rocks. It isn't far off the 15, and is a perfect stop to stretch your legs and learn little history at the same time.

Wendy Santos

What a neat place to go visit! Lots of Utah history and just really insightful into how people lived back in the 1800s. They really fixed it up nice, it's fun to walk through the entire Fort and get a glimpse into the lives of those who came before us. While we were there they also gave each of our kids a Pioneer Era toy. They have absolutely loved them!

Christy Hinkson

Marty Griffin

Nice green oasis, picnic tables and trees and grass. Fun historic fort complete with tours.

Ben Sperry

Cove fort is an excellent stop on your trip down I-15. It is an old fort built to support the coach and mail routs as well as the telegraph system. The free guide was very knowledgeable and was able to talk at my children’s level as well as answer some of my more difficult questions. My kids loved to play the hoop game, running all over the courtyard. It was all free. There wasn’t any place to buy food at the fort so bring food or plan to stop a bit down the road.

Amy Johnson

Lovely docents. Interactive. Kids loved it and still play with their free souvenir.

Brig Church

Great historical site there close to I-70. We had a great tour of the site and learned alot of why it was built. We went during the annual Cove Fort days. They had games, food, and the yummiest fry bread. We ended up being there during a big rain storm but were able to seek shelter and wait it out.

Ken

What a great place to stop along Hwy 15 between St George and Salt Lake. We took the tour and it was awesome. It take about 1 1/2 total with the film and tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and took his time to explain everything and took pictures if us also. What a great time.

Erika Patel

Very friendly missionaries, beautiful views, fresh apples, and 150+ year history. Definitely a nice stop along I 15

Eric Clarke

The tour guides are a bunch of nice volunteers that are willing to be a quick or long as you want for the tour.

Christy Johnson

Amazing! Wonderful free tours. Very interesting & informative. Great for all ages. My kids loved it.

Joseph Giacomello

Great history, we'll preserved and excellent tour. Nice shaded picnic area.

Janet Robertson

Very worthwhile to take a mile drive off the I15 to see this missionary fort built in 1867! Our guide had so much information to tell us and we enjoyed learning the history of the fort. Great for kids!

Julie Kirby

Why did I wait 43 yrs before visiting this cool place? Our whole family loved it. Highly recommend this travel break. If you're not in to history, stop just to use the bathrooms. They are the cleanest restrooms on all of i15!

Conner R.

This is a very family friendly destination. You can learn lots of cool things here. They give out little hand held, pioneer toys to the kids. If you want your kids entertained for a long time, the pioneer toy is definitely worth it. Shoot, I get entertained by it myself. The tour is free. It starts off with a little video. Then you go through the fort. A very historical site.

Tammi Bauman

Loved the history, the way it's presented with all of the furniture and stories. Love how they taught my children, had hands on Pioneer activities and games, and even gave them a Pioneer toy they'd hand made. Such a good experience!

Anna Lawrence

It was a lot of fun. A great place to let the kids get out and explore during a long car ride. The tour was well organized and had a lot of fun facts. They showed you fun games that the pioneer kids would play and sent the kids home with wooden spinners. We loved it and my kids For 2,4,6, and 7. So great for all ages.

Jordan Hall

Great place to stop for a break along the I-15. You can take a quick tour of this historic site. Tours can be short if you don't have much time, or more involved if you want. Nice volunteer staff can answer any questions you have. There are picnic tables and restrooms. All free of charge. There is a gas station just up the road.

William Bruce VanderToolen

Such a wonderful place to visit, anytime of the year. It is a reverent, quiet, and extremely clean place to rest during your travels. Be it for 5 minutes, or 2 hours. The roads are safer, if travelers take occasional breaks during their drive. You feel a renewed sense of physical and spiritual energy after a stop here. Did I mention, absolute spotless restrooms, with music...

Jason Nielsen

Great place to take a break. Missionaries were very helpful in guided tours. Neat history.

Hunter Earl

Really nice attraction. I would recommend to anyone travelling to St. George from Salt Lake City

Looking for a great place to stop and check out a little Utah history this is a good one. Just off the I-15 and i-70 turn off you can find a quiet little place little known to most but with a lot of history and while you're at it head on over i-70 check out the Fremont Indian State Park. From this area you've got so much to see check your local maps plenty of state parks beautiful places to be.

Tony Norton

We enjoyed visiting the site and learning more about the purpose and activity of the fort. I remember visiting here at a very young age when it was owned and run privately. It is so much better now and the fort has been restored to reflect what it would have been like in days of long ago.

The Top Curtis Clan

This a great place. We are actually serving a 6 month mission here taking people down to the fort and telling them the history of the fort. It is a wonderful quiet peaceful place that served as a way place for travelers and pioneers from 1867 to 1890. So much wonderful history and games for the kids. Definately worth stopping and taking in the history. It has great clean bathrooms and a wonderful place to picnic with lots of grass to run on and tables for picnicking. Come join the fun!

Heather McKee

This is a great place for a quick stop to learn some well-preserved history. Personal, guided tours are offered by members of the Mormon church who work at the facility. Restoration here was well done, and the tour is excellent. Takes about an hour, and the guide will tailor the tour to your time frame if needed. Sister Walker was very kind and knowledgeable. Enjoyable experience. Thank you!

A Mormon historic site that was really well preserved and interesting. The elders that conducted the tour were knowledgeable and could not have been more welcoming and friendly. Worth the stop.

This is a really cool historical sight to go to. It has a fort that was built where you can look at a ton of displays that are very intriguing of all the things they used to support themselves back when they built the fort. The tour is also free and the guides are very kind and very informed. Awesome place to visit if it's on your way somewhere.

April Pitbladdo

Best picnic stop in your way to see George.

Tasha Stratton

I love this place and the nice people who give free tour's have a lot of knowledge of the fort and it's history

Kali Oyster

Fun, FREE tour. Just a mile off the highway. This place is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas. They have a video and a walking tour of the Historical Cove Fort. They also boast the cleanest bathrooms, which they do live up to. What I particularly liked is that you can take as long or as short of a tour as you want! I had been driving, so I didn't much feel like sitting to watch the video. It is also one tour guide per family or individual, so you get to go at your own pace. This place is run by Mormon (Latter-Day Saint) missionaries. That being said, they didn't offer me a Bible or Book of Mormon. So, I wouldn't worry about them being pushy. They also have an air-conditioned waiting room for those hot summer days that they are busier. I would say that this place is family friendly.

Dean Balzmi

Loved Jim Hill's presentation and tour of this meticulously restored fort. They even shared apples with us.

Chamal Mediwaka

This is a very impressive historic site and i loved it. The tour guides are amazing too and its free. You will learn a lot of Mormons.

It was raining but the tour was excellent. Made the grandkids think about things from the 1800's. They each got a string and wooden toy that they have not quit playing with today! We did questions and answers as a family when we left. Had a great time.

Wonderful historical place. The tour was fantastic and the people were extremely nice and knowledgeable.

Jim Meldrum

Take a short detour and stop here for some amazing history of this area. This was a major port that was built in 1860. They even still have a lot of the original items. You get a feel just for how hard it was to survive. They also have a nice grass area you can enjoy a picnic and soak in the history. Glad this place was restored and preserved. My favorite was the device used to lift the ox when one was in need of new shoes put on.

Maylene Pearce

Great historic place to visit. Has clean restrooms and friendly people. It's worth the time to stop there. It only takes a few minutes to see the fort.

Deborah Thomas

Wonderful restored fort. Enough guides that every group gets a personal tour.

David Haskin

Excellent 2 mile detour to pick up our pioneer history! The docents are quite knowledgeable and engaging to young and experienced alike. One appreciates the ingenuity of our forefathers. This visit can be done in 45 minutes to two hours, depending upon your interest.

What to do in Southern Oregon

What an awesome stop along Utah hwy 15! We are so happy that we stopped to learn about Cove Fort and the history found there. Our guide Elder Williams was a wonderful storyteller and took us on an hour long tour (we skipped the movie at the beginning) We thoroughly enjoyed learning about this fort built by Ira Hinkley and how his family lived and fun fact: the fort is completely built with Lava Rock. They also have picnic tables and restrooms so it's a perfect place to rest.

Lindy Taylor

Great place for a picnic and free tour of a significant historical place. Very peaceful, nice restrooms, beautiful spirit there. Some nice films we shown and they have us some pioneer toys and made it fun for the kids. Made it as long or short as we asked for. We almost didn't come but so glad we did. Best thing we did on our family vacation.

Michael Gannon

Cove Fort is a historical site managed by the Church of Latter Day Saints to remember the early work of their founders when escorting pioneers across the southwest desert looking for new homes on the west coast. The fort is not far from the territorial capital prior to Utah becoming a state in Fillmore Utah. The site offers personal tours on a first come first served basis and has a 15 minute historical movie to explain the history of the site. Incredibly friendly staff who are excited to be there and share the fort's history with you.

edgrand25

Lo6s of cool things to see. Weird that you couldn't do the tour alone, but the guides have a lot of interesting facts. Very LDS.

Lamb to Wolf

Lovely people. Very informative and nice tour. Sparkly clean restrooms too

Salvador Menjivar

Gorgeous stone old fort run free of charge by the most charming Mormon community and its dedicated guides. It is set amidst apple orchard and even an old pioneer shack that was transported all the way there. The fort is a wonderland of a bygone era with all the furniture, bed linen and kitchen utensils of the period. Worth a detour to see how pioneers made a dream come true in a harsh enviroment even though it sadly meant displacing ancient ameroindian tribes that had successfully hacked a good living.

Ollie Blair

I was born in Salt lake City Utah I have lived here most of my life, I am 60 years old now and this is the first time I have been to Cove Fort. I really had a great time learning about my CHURCH OF LATTER DAY SAINTS and the pioneer's of Cove Fort they truly were some strong and inspired people back then, they were very blessed with many talents the walls and craftsmanship of the Fort were just awesome the crafts that some of them had were quite interesting especially the sisters that made flowers and reiths out of human hairs, also the blacksmith was gifted to hand make horseshoes and some of the sister made rugs out any type of material they could get along with making quilts, my grandmother would make both of them I even got to help on some of them. Well all in all it was a great experience for me. The missionaries were very knowledgeable about the Fort and about the pioneer's good job you guys give you all a thumbs up.

Stephen Smith

Mamythe Gamingducky

This is an amazing historical church site. I have been here once before and it's amazing. I love seeing things like this. You can take a tour, long or short. You can go on top of the fort and look through the rooms. I definitely suggest this as a place to vist on your way South, or North.

Wes Colemere

Well preserved, and wonderfully maintained, Cove Fort is a lovely spot for a pit stop. The on site guides are friendly, and very knowledgeable about the sites history and features. A great landmark to learn more about Utah's history.

Brandon and Tasha Marsh

Celeste Sharp

This is the perfect place to stretch your legs when driving between Dixie and Salt Lake. They had a lot of cool historically accurate details that were fun to see. The missionary tour guides were so friendly and didn't even mind our dorky jokes. The tour started with a nice video explaining why the fort was built. We then walked into each of the rooms. There are a couple of picnic areas by the parking lot.
