REVIEWS OF BYU Museum of Paleontology IN Utah

Cat McQueen

It’s a bit old and the lighting isn’t great but I learned a ton about dinosaurs and they have an amazing fossil collection as well as an amazing collection of imprints in sandstone.

R H

Fun place to visit with younger kids.

Kyle Adams

This was such an interesting little museum. It definitely doesn't have a lot of funding and reflects that as it isn't super refined, but definitely worth a visit and couple bucks for a donation (as it is free)

Peter Vogel

Small museum but well worth the time to visit

Randy Hurd

This is a really fun place for both kids and grown ups. Lots of cool things. Just a little small.

Jake Wynn

For it being free I'll give this 5 stars. Basically you walk in a small circle or rooms one of which you can see people working on fossils behind glass. A few good dinosaur skeletons but not much else. I wouldn't plan to spend much more than 20 minutes here's and that's with reading everything in sight.

Kira Joy Shelton

The museum is really small (like 30 mins to go through it all pretty well), but it it's free (they do have a donation box), quiet, and clean. There are several large dinosaur skeletons and displays of ancient creatures in a variety of sizes. We can typically see somebody working on some bones through the large observation window, which my kids enjoy. Note: I don't that it is open on the weekend, and it closes at like 4 or 5pm on weekdays, so don't plan on an evening/weekend visit.

Laurie Porritt

There are complete Dino skeletons, fossils to touch and windows to view the working lab. Self guided tour. Something for all ages.

Virginia Medina

Super fun

Saely Johnson

First place my children and I visited when we moved to Provo, Utah back in 2011. Cool stuff!

momoeight mamabear

Great place for a quick stop for anyone that likes dinos! Only takes a few minutes and it's free ( you can make a small donation of you wish)

Trenton Allred

Really a cool cool place, they have awesome awe inspiring, educational display, top notch paleontologist s that often take time to talk with visitors and staff that will give people a museum welcome and intro whenever asked for in advance. There's a glass wall at the back of the museum that will let spectators see Into the lab where the technicians prepare the bones, its a pretty cool experience, and they don't Evan charge you anything! They have a donation box near the museum entrance you can donate to, and trust me this museum worth your time and support, so bust out the car change if nothing else next time you plan a trip here, let's keep the good karma flowing, these people do alot of good work!

Josh Hansen

Really great place to be.

Adrianne Erickson

I go to this museum often with my children and we love it! A few things to know before you go are: 1) it is a very small museum and if you rush through, you'll be done in 5-10 minutes. I recommend talking to your kids or guests about taking your time at every display. I ask my kids to look at the teeth or claws of each dinosaur, etc. This way your tour of the museum will take 30-45 minutes and may be more worth the trip. 2) There is no admission charge, but donations are helpful: $1 per adult and 50 cents per child, I think. 3) They also have some very cool rocks / minerals on display, a large window to watch the students work on bones, clean restrooms, water fountain, and an active Facebook page if you're interested.

danthedoozy

Free, educational, and an impressive collection.

Tyson Wheare

The exhibit area is fairly small, but the highlight was when we were watching employees clean fossils and an employee came out and offered to answer questions. He was really friendly and told us as much as he knew about different exhibits, explaining the mural that included all the fossils that have been found.

Maurice Tanquary

Great little place for dinos etc. If you read the information it provides plenty of time to experience this place.

david boston

The best attraction in Provo and surrounding areas! Learn about Dinosaur Jim and get inspired by his amazing story of discovery. See the only dino that is named after an apostle. Have you mind blown by the largest sloth you could imagine.

Evan Whitaker

Great little museum. Free with donations welcomed.

Joshua Butts

Not much to see. There are a few good looking fossils. It's basically a student lab with a couple things in the foyer that people can see.

Rachelle Gunderson

Good for a quick intro to dinosaurs. It is free but they do have a donation box.

Iain Hunter

Amazing all that is here for no charge

JPShieux

It's a super awesome place for any dinosaur enthusiast, my kids love this place and all for the low price of FREE. We love the BYU Paleontology Museum.

Betsy Baird

Super fun! You can get really close to huge foils and then watch though a window as they work on more fossils!!!

Bryan Fisher

Awesome fossils! This place doesn't look like much on the outside, but the dinosaurs are tremendous. Maybe 7 large, complete fossils. And free.

Stephen Self

Way cool! Kids loved it!

Kevin Mock

Dinosaurs! They have beautiful fossil displays and many cool specimens. We went during Night at the Museums and we loved it! They answered all our questions about the fossil and paleontology in general. Highly recommended I will be going back.

BNS

Loved it! Free(but we gave a donation)..and it was very informative for my kids!

Morgan Kinyon

I don't know why we've never been here. It is on the smaller side, but chock full of amazing things! We had a blast!

Brooke Larsen

It's a relatively small museum, but has a lot of interesting displays. In my mind, there are two elements that make it well worth a visit. First off, it has a lot more original bones on display than what I find typical at dinosaur museums. I think it's quite interesting to get a look at the actual fossil, which has a much different look to me than a cast. The other great element is that this museum features a high concentration of Utah dinosaurs. It's cool getting to see the many wonderful dinosaurs that were discovered here, like the Utahraptor. Seeing the abundance of different dinos native to the area increased my appreciation for the wonderful treasures we have in our state. I recommend checking this museum out!

Kevin Brown

Fun place to take kids to see some fossils. Staff was very knowledgeable and friendly

Cindy Faatz

My daughter loves going here. Its a small place but great to get out of the house. It could use a good dusting though.

Shitsville101

I was pretty impressed with the museum, especially for what it was. Tiny, in terms of museums, it was packed full of bones and pictures and informational plates. There are several touch stations where you can handle the fossils and see how big and heavy they really are. There was quite a bit of diversity in fossil types too, from dinosaurs to plants to ice age creatures. Some of the informational plates had fallen down and I hope that someone goes through regularly to check on things like that. It's a donation sponsored museum, and because of that, I wish that there was an opportunity to sponsor an exhibit like zoos and aquariums do. I think that would increase the upkeep on some of the dated exhibits, although there were some additional plaques that included updated information, so there is some effort being made to staying up to date.

Kylie White

Great little museum to take the kids. It's small, but free and has good displays.

Deanna Millett

So cool to see dinosaur bones, people working on the artifacts, and information about the animals all for FREE! My family loved it.

Lathan Hartvigsen

Really cool exhibits. Loved the local-ish exhibits (Utah, Montana, Wyoming) and the history. This place deserves to be kept up better than it is. Some of the placards had fallen down. And some displays are just sitting on the floor. Very kid friendly with a lot of touchable exhibits.

Brian J. Rogers

Pretty small

Bobby Bricker

Small but cool.

Tammy Ewell

Great place to take Nephew.

Nathan Platt

Nice little museum. Love taking our little ones here. Doesn't take long and it is pretty neat

Madison Daniels

This is one of my favorite museums in the valley. Although small, it has fossils from the most recognizable dinosaurs including T-Rex and Triceratops skulls (huge!). It is also very educational, having displays with the history of Paleontology, facts about the dinosaurs, as well as large colorful murals on the walls. Excellent place for kids.

Alex Albert

Very small for a museum, had some semi-interesting displays, can see the whole thing in 20 mins

Joann Murphy

Very fun and interesting place, also free

Randy Warren

Awesome museum. I'd never been here before

Trevor Davis

Fun but kind of small

Phoebe K.

This is a great museum with lots of information and dinosaur exhibits! And on top of that, free! I don't think people give it enough credit.

Cynthia Butcher

Cool bones and displays. Very small, but good info. The kids liked touching the fossils.

Joseph Crapo

Hidden gem on campus. Worth visiting for a half hour when you have the chance.

Brandon Blatter

Most people probably don't know that this place exists. It's pretty cool but I honestly don't go very often. I believe there are some semi-interactive activities you can do here. Worth checking out for a family home evening or something.

David Cannon

Super fun place to visit with kids. They loved it.

Kara Welker

Fun free activity for kids! Not interactive. Self guided. But still fun, and hey it's free!

Barbara Alldredge

Although fairly small, there is lots to explore if you have curious children. The staff was helpful with questions and we loved watching them work through the viewing window.

Steven Spoonemore

Small, well maintained, very informative and free. This was a great stop while travelling through the area with kids.

Irmarie Ramos

Fun family outing

Sterling Rodriguez

Nice place for kids but it's not big at all

Parker Juanson

Super fun

Will Solari

Cool, free museum. It isn’t huge but the exhibits they have are great and inspire wonder.

Mark Oliver

Nice displays and information.

Jordan Hall

Great museum with lots of good displays. Fun for kids and adults. Free admission.

Timothy Jones

Small building with exceptional specimens.

Brian Baity

Small museum but the admission price is wonderful, free. If you have an interest in dinosaurs and the like this is a good place to visit

Calvan Johnson

What an awesome place to visit! To see all the displays without reading the information takes only 20 minutes or so, to read most the displays count on 45-60 minutes. As most the reviews agree, it is a small museum, but its a FREE museum so there shouldn't be any complaints. A good place to bring the kids, as well as to bring out the inner child. Love this place!

Leah Dymock

It's awesome for such a small museum! Lots of cool artifacts and hands-on specimens for kids.

Megan McFadden

Great little place with some hands on learning for the kids

jbdressageinc

Interesting learning experience

Heather Taylor

My best friend found this gem because of her work. It's free, has so much information and had actual remains! It is a little small, however, I would totally recommend going to this place if you love dinosaurs. It's great if you only have a little time to spend like we did.

Jared Spice

Impressive collection in a small space. Also hard to argue with free - donations are appreciated.

Paul Bartholomew

Fun small museum. A few large skeletons and other artifacts to view.

Kelvaris

Amazing a must see.

Natalie George

It was small but a lot to see. And my kids loved the utah raptor and the t rex head.

Heidi M Gunn

Amazing

Doug DeFord

Very kid friendly, unusual for a museum

Breann Hemann

No one was there to talk to us about anything

Mary Goss

Great little museum with lots of exhibits. A must see.

Cynthia Snider

Wonderful exhibits. Excellent explanations. My grandkids And I loved being here

J Markham

Fun place for a quick visit. The 25 foot giant sloth was probably my favorite specimen.

DC Mugleston

It's free which we love! Much smaller than the museum at Thanksgiving point but it still has tons of rocks and skeletons and will keep small kids entertained for half an hour. Older kids will be entertained for longer. There is a big glass window and you can watch palentology students at work!

Jana Williams

It was so interesting told by Victoria, The study of Paleontology.I would like for more people to go get a tour. I would love for this place to have a gift shop .

Paul Noble

Bring the kids and grandkids! It's fun and educational. Helpful and friendly staff members that are willing to answer your questions. Don't miss this hidden gem.

Tory Norman

Small, but well put together. Good for kids with short attention spans.

Mary Potter

A wonderful place for anyone who likes science, dinosaurs, or both. It is a small building for a museum, but they were able to comfortably fit more exhibits in it than I would have expected. There are fossils of fish, mammals and invertebrates as well as the inevitable dinosaurs. I thought the displays were well done and the plaques were very informative. I'm glad I went.

Brigg Turner

This place was great. We spent well over an hour. If your kids are in to dinosaurs - they will love this place. No, it is not huge - but the specimens they have are really great. There are a lot of well known dinosaurs as well as some that are less well known. There is also a window into the lab where they excavate specimens from the field.

keri cassel

super cool museum, and free! i just wish it had a gift shop/gifts were available at one of the already existing BYU stores right next to it. i think they could make money for the museum that way, allowing them to enhance their exhibits, and it would be super cool to have some dino merch from this museum. (specifically i would love a print of the dinosaur jim movie poster they have, so if that is ever a thing... BYU, PLEASE CONTACT ME!)

Lynn Mcdowell

Great place to take kids.

Taryn Brooks

Great little museum. Literally a hidden gem across from the BYU football stadium. I took my children here on a field trip. It is a small museum but the specimens are great. It was really amazing to actually get to be up close and personal with the dinosaurs. My kids all loved this place too, so much that we have been multiple times. It is free but they ask for a small donation. a dollar or 2, to help keep the museum open.

Aaron Hoskins

This is the best museum in the world! Okay, I am partial, but it does have some cool little exhibits and is well run.

Megan Funk

It isn't very big, but there are some very interesting specimens to see.

Jade G

It's really small. But it had a lot of cool things for its size. We went for the second time. My kids lasted about 20 minutes each time (2 and 4 year olds). Great quick activity. Sometimes you see people working in the lab through the glass window. The descriptions on the plaques are helpful. They have rocks, fossils, bones, skulls, and replicas of dinosaur skeletons.

P Miller

This little museum has amazing fossils! For a small donation you get to see a great diversity of fossils. Well organized, clearly displayed. This place is a winner.

Jessica

This is a fairly small museum but it has a nice collection of fossils. It is donation optional so it won't cost you much. It takes less than 10 minutes to walk through the entire building.

Veronica Adams

Small but way cool.

Gary Wright

Awesome for kids and adults. It's small but but cool. I like that it has a lot of the animals from this area.

Sarah Robinson

Hidden gem in Provo. Worth the visit if you have young kids. Plus, FREE

Ryan Harvey

It's not a huge museum but for free (there's a suggested donation but no actually required entrance fee) it's a pretty cool place. If you or your kids are into dinosaurs they'll enjoy this place. And you can see the entire museum in 20 minutes.

Eric Chambers

Great place to take kids. Interesting, educational, and has a great view of the fossil preparation lab. It's free and it's not an all day commitment which is also nice.

Julia DeLeeuw

Cute little place with a few interesting display. Wish they had more things to look at.

Andrew Masters

Awesome displays to check out, no shortage of adventure here!

unko_steve77

So cool and pay as much as you want. I love Dino breath

Cameron Taylor

Small exhibit but still incredible. Offers awesome historical information as well as some biographies of notable paleontologists associated with BYU. We have taken our nieces and nephews here and they geeked out over the dinosaurs. It is a great place for family and for couples. Takes about 45 min to an hour depending on how much you read/ check out.

Steve Barrett

For the size being pretty small, it was a good experience. me and my grandson had a good time.

Maria Cameron

Gotta love the BYU "dinosaur museum." We have been coming to it since my first child was little (now 22). Let's start with the fact that there is no entry fee--awesome, but don't forget to leave a donation to support the program. It is kid friendly, never crowded, and always fun. Dinosaurs, rocks, and prehistoric fossils...what's not to like? This time we didn't get to see any of the students working in the lab but it's awesome when we have that opportunity.

Thomas Pack

I loved sharing this experience with my three year old granddaughter. She had almost as much fun as I did.

Maria Fawcett

This is a small museum full of Dinosaur wonder, my grandchildren love going there.

Robert Love

Great but small exhibit. Price was free. But recommend using donation box to keep it running.

Kira Harris

This is a tiny little museum but it is jam packed with awesome stuff! You can do this in under 30 minutes so it's a great quick outing, especially if you have toddlers and/or young kids with short attention spans. We loved it and my toddler was happily entertained as well. They also have a glass wall that lets you watch as they work on preparing new specimens. It's free but they recommend a donation of at least $1 per adult and .50¢ per child - which is more than reasonable.

Becca smith

Really cool. Great to bring kids in the winter! My only criticism is that it seemed small

Holly Broadbent

This museum seems like an afterthought, BYU spends a lot of effort and money on other facilities, but not this place. The arrangement of the displays is not very child friendly. Lots of fossils are right there with no case or roping off which creates many attractive nusances for children, not exactly discouraging touching or protecting the assets. But I keep going back because my little ones love dinosaurs and love to run the circle around the museum. So it could be a lot better, but it's not bad. :)

Adam Rea

This is a quick must see in provo

lucinda Thorne

Had a blast bringing the grandkids!

Bobbie

Nice paleontology museum, kind of small but very educational and free

Emily Shaw

Small but still very enjoyable!

Madison McIntyre

Pretty small museum but we loved looking at everything.

Nathan Anderson

A very well done and professional museum. Smaller of course, but it's free and full of great specimens.

Spencer Black

It's free. Great for young kids and families.

Kyle63GMC

Pretty quick to go through and had some cool dinosaur skeletons. Best of all there is no admission fee!

Julie Markham

This is a wonderful place for families, even with little kids.

Drew Johnson

Cool stuff... very small, only 10 minutes to walk through maybe 30 minutes if you read everything.

Sumiko Clark

A small, fun museum with dinosaurs and ancient life exhibits. Admission is by donation (suggested $1/adult and 50¢/kid).

Kim White

Amazing little museum!! Free, but we gave donations to keep this place going.

Aaron Pollard

Very interesting antiques in this museum.

Carolyn Dearden

This museum is pretty small, so don't come expecting something like the dinosaur museum at Thanksgiving Point. It's free, though there is a place for donations and not crowded. For the size they have a good variety of fossils. There is also a window where you can watch them working. The only problem is the hours. It's only open Monday through Friday and they close at 5.

Michael Robinson

My children love the "dinosaur museum"

Emry Kunzler

This museum looks small from the outside, but it has so much inside! They have a lot of fossils and several full skeletons on display. There is also a window where you can see the paleontologists working. Good for kids because it doesn't take long to go through but there is a lot to see.

Jennie Bruce

This museum is a hidden gem. We went with my daughter's preschool group, but will return with the rest of the family soon. Great pieces!

Hayley F

Just the right size museum to bring very young kids. We can walk through in about 15 minutes if the kids are rowdy or 30 if they want to look at all the fossils. Free, but donations are accepted. Very cool place to visit! My 4 year old especially loves the giant crocodile skull fossil.

Stephanie Wilson

Love this museum. Informative, compact, a great place for kids! Even hands on exhibits.

Dustin Smith

Great museum. I've been a big fan since the 70's and worked here in the 90's.

David Argyle

Excellent place quite and infarmative.

Cindy Hart

Short wonderful museum!

walters thomas

There are only a half dozen full skeletons and some assorted fragments so it is a very small museum but it’s still dinosaurs

James Mehl

I went on a date there, and it was so much fun! There are surprises around every corner, and while it might look a little small on the outside, there are many fossils to see, all arranged so the space inside doesn't seem too cluttered. There are also beautiful rocks right when you walk in that are pleasing to look at. While it is a little out of the way for a BYU student who lives on campus, admission is free (they accept donations) so it's totally worth it.

Chloe B

Fascinating specimens!! Anyone who is saying that there was nothing interesting clearly isn't really into paleontology. There were quite a few new/"not yet named" species with full casts! Amazing to see how huge ancient creatures were, and to find out how many of these fossils were found!! I completely recommend visiting.

Destiny Stone

This place is a free admission museum, and it's content and displays are amazing. The building is small, so it takes less than 20 minutes to tour. My older kids loved it, and my toddler was entertained by the detailed displays

Cody Simonsen

The staff here is friendly and informative. They're always polite and passionate about the exhibits. Always a good time!

Phantasmic Games

A good place for the price.

Julie Duran

Free dinosaur museum!!! T-Rex, triceratops, huge alligator-type dinosaur head. Small in square footage, large in appeal.

Joe Szymanski

Drove past here for years, first visit. Small but packed with exhibits

Laura Hodges

Good exhibits. Great people to meet. Very scientific
