Most folks have a fascination with death and this fascination prompted us us to visit this museum. Very interesting and time we'll spent learning about funerals, undertaking, hearses, etc. Curious items in the gift shop just begged us to buy, buy, buy.

This was a very interesting museum with great facts and exhibits. Two very memorable exhibits include the hearse from President Reagan and Ford and the Land Rover that the Pope rode in. I also enjoyed looking at the exhibit displaying programs from funerals of various famous people.

An exceptional museum experience. So much to see and read. Not at all creepy or ghoulish. Just the history of how we have treated our dearly beloved. Lots of vehicles to check out from motor cars to horse drawn carriages. Lots of information on the death and funerals of US presidents. Tons of displays and information on how popes are interred. A small area on movie, music and sports stars. Very fun place to visit and very informative.

This is the second time we've been to this very unique and interesting museum. It is kid friendly and educational for everyone. The morbidly inclined will appreciate it the most! An awesome Halloween time destination. Note: The "kid friendly" haunted house they run during October has jump scare animatronics that not all kids will like. Along with some gore. ENJOY!

Morbid curiosity? Love hanging in cemeteries? This is your place! It’s small and unassuming from the outside, but this place is packed with lots of interesting information about dead presidents and stars to funeral practices most of us might not be familiar with. The Dia de Los Muertos, fantasy coffins, and cremation chamber were my favorite exhibits.

This place was really cool! only $10 to get in, and worth every penny. Has stuff about Presidents, the Pope’s, Day of the Dead, Egyptians, Celebrities, Antique Hearse (Horse Carriage & Automotive), info on embalming and cremation. I thought it was gonna be morbid, but it was not at all. Laid out very well! and with lots of info and things to see. I was not expecting such a large facility, or the amount of things that I saw. I originally found out about this place, after watching a show called Shipping Wars on A&E. If you are in the area, I would suggest stopping by and checking it out. I was told by an employee, that the owner of the Roy Rogers car is a Board member, and also owns the Batmobile, which has been displayed there before. I would love to see those on a future visit. Hope you enjoy it too.

This place is AWESOME. I love museums and had no idea what to expect nor had I ever heard of a funeral museum. There are some amazing displays here! I enjoyed reading about the history and seeing the evolution of the industry. There is also a really neat Dia de los Muertos display/scene. And unexpectedly there is a HUGE Pope exhibit. Something I was not expecting to see and I really enjoyed reading about the Papal process in times of death. I am not Catholic but grew up in an area that is predominantly Catholic and found this particular exhibit nostalgic and comforting. I also really enjoy American history and found the Presidential exhibit very interesting as well. I was attending a private event held at the museum and wasn't sure what to expect and found myself pleasantly surprised and i pressed.

This is a lost gem in the museums. People are put off by the name but it is well worth the visit. It has the history of deaths of famous people, mummification, and the evolution of cars as hearses. It's one of the most interesting museums in Houston!

National Museum of Funeral History is an interesting museum, but really it's missing too much. Why the stuff about the Pope when it's supposed be about the National Museum of Funeral History? It's such an extraordinary waste of space, and most of all, who the hell cares about him? Instead, why not cover the history of gravedigging and graverobbing, headstones and mausoleums, and the work of morticians and funeral directors? I would have liked to see a video of one dead person who undergoes the funeral process from start to finish. That would have been very enlightening. An interesting curio from history books, which was captured in The Great Train Robbery, is the mention of a coffin being affixed with a bell, so the suppsosedly deceased would not have any fear of being buried alive by ringing the bell. And no mention of prison funerals? All in all, National Museum of Funeral History is incomplete and has a lot of potential to be a better museum than it currently is.

Lots if interesting things to see, not very morbid (I skipped info on embalming). Many cars used for "final farewells" including Princess Grace, Presidents Reagan and Ford. The tour is self guided but you can arrange for docent. I assumed the museum would focus on the history or traditions of funerals but instead a huge part centered around the vehicles used, unusual coffin designs, and a wonderful area dedicated to celebrities. There are presidential and papal display areas as well, traditions of papal funerals was very interesting even for a non-catholic. Plan on a minimum of 2 hours because there are so many displays. Update: returned in October 2019 for a docent lead tour which I highly recommend. Our guide was great, knowledgeable and funny. His humor incorporated common phrases explaining their history. The Papal exhibit is probably one of a kind much of it displayed with the sanction of the Vatican. His historical explanation of wicker caskets was amazing as well as learning Lincoln was embalmed 14 times so his body could be displayed on a long train route to Illinois for burial. Amazing story.

Odd. The exhibits include hearses, famous dead people, and versions of the coffins of late presidents. There was even a small section on dead animal celebrities. The displays about the development of the modern American funeral were interesting, but I would have liked more information about pre-civil war burial customs.

If you're ever in Houston please stop by this museum. Any day above ground is a good one. That's the saying at the National Museum of Funeral History. If you want to know more about the background on funeral preparations, this is the place to go. Appropriately, located on Barren Springs, the museum can show you what embalming was like during the Civil War or how caskets were made at the turn of the last century. One of the most interesting exhibits is the Fantasy Coffins. These coffins aren't just regular coffins with a little extra shine and some fine velvet on the inside, they're hand crafted and designed to capture a little something important in the life of the deceased. A plane, a fish, and even a chicken are just some of the forms coffins take when you commission work from the artist from Ghana. Kind of makes you wonder how you'd choose to be remembered. Certainly not on the traditional museum map, this departure from the norm is educational, kind of fun, and sobering at times. Check it out and pick up a little something from the gift shop for those dear to you.

This place is certainly a UNIQUE attraction. I'd say that about half the floor space is dedicated to antique hearses. They have a room (too small, IMO) with souvenirs from the funerals of famous (mostly Hollywood) people. There's another tiny room about cremation, another about the history of embalming, another about the funerals of U.S. Presidents, another about funerals of Popes. But in terms of an everyday funeral like you might go to next week, there's very little (I'm gonna go ahead and say "nothing") related to that common topic. Maybe they'll add it in the future. Anyway, if you haven't been, go ahead and go. It's well worth 9 bucks.

The National Funeral Museum might sound a little morbid but it is really very interesting. When I was there they had a display on loan from The Roy Rogers Museum in California... It was his car. One of the coolest most awesome things I have ever seen. I wish I could have sat in it! Other exhibits were vehicles, Hollywood stars that passed on, the history of embalming, the planning of a Pope's funeral, funeral custums from around the world, Presidents who have passed, ans more... It is definitely worth the little that it costs and the time to see it all. We were there for a little over 2 hours and it could have been 3 easy. A stop worth making

Houston’s Museum District is the place most outsiders flock to when they want to visit a wide variety of museums. I agree that this is a great place to start, but the fact is, there are many other excellent museums to visit in the Houston area that are located somewhere else in the city and a prime example is the National Museum of Funeral History. Most people feel a little creepy about visiting a museum dedicated to funerals and dying, but once you experience this hidden gem, you will wonder what ever held you back. The museum does include a large number of hearses, coffins, etc, like you would expect, but it has much more to offer than that. The section on presidential deaths, the tomb of the unknown soldier, the life and deaths of Popes, and others will pique your interest and keep you browsing. One section at the National Museum of Funeral History that caught me by surprise is the one dedicated to celebrity deaths. Here, you will learn about famous people, many of whom died younger than expected. They even have copies of the actual funeral order of service/program that was used when the celebrities died and they have exhibits and audio that take you back to fateful moments, like when John Lennon was assassinated. To keep things entertaining, the National Museum of Funeral History has videos, trivia, and other fun, interactive moments, like creating your own epitaph. The gift shop is larger than expected and it is where your visit begins and ends. They have several t-shirts that are quite amusing and I recommend buying at least one before you go. Houston’s museums are many and while the National Museum of Funeral History isn’t as well known as the ones in the Museum District, it is definitely a place you need to visit. The many exhibits, the hearses on display, the educational lessons, and so much more add up to a museum experience like few others.

Definitely an underrated gem in Houston's museum scene. It's located far away from the Museum District and isn't too well known, but is definitely worth a visit. It more or less covers a bunch of topics related to, well, funerals - from Papal burials to items related to American Presidents (including an old eternal flame used at JFK's tomb) to a wide collection of hearses. Worth a visit if you're in the area looking for something to do.
