REVIEWS OF Mexic-Arte Museum IN Texas

Karl Lavender

Please visit this lovely little spot for some amazing, topical art, history and an appreciation for something you might not be familiar with, as I was.

Ryan Baker

The building feels like it's falling apart, there are some spaces inside that I was legitimately worried that I would put my foot through the floor.

A' S.

Love this place

erika! c

SO WORTH IT!

Abraham Orozco

Great little art museum amongst the high rises of the Austin skyline. Amazing gift shop and exhibits that truly showcase Mexican and Texan art.

Leslie Steffensen

The art will stun you! Beautiful and thought provoking!

Brittany Allen Pizano

I love smaller museums and this is no exception. Such beautiful artwork and interesting exhibits.

Alejandra Gonzalez

I only went into the gift shop, tons of mexican things

Andrea Duque

Would not call this a museum more like minor Mexican culture history exhibit w a cool little gift shop. They have a nice vibe going on with the murals on the side of the building. The customer service unfortunately ruins that.

Karl Amundson

Great gallery in the heart of downtown. Lots of art to view, definitely a learning experience for anyone interested in the culture.

Sandy Henry

Beautiful representation of Mexican culture. Lots of interesting and powerful pieces, sculptures and historical artifacts all from Mexican or Hispanic artists. Really delicious Mexican candy for sale as well while you ponder at the amazing exhibitions.

Oscar H. Fajardo

Sunday’s the museum is free to all. Has great exhibits and the gift shop is a must. Great location with plenty of parking near by.

Martin Yung

I was visiting from NY, so had no idea of what to expect. Mexic-Arte is a small pocket museum, where you can walk thru the gallery in a handful of minutes. But I took more time to read the placards and really look at the photos and artwork. I came away with more understanding and depth of culture. I think it was time well spent. If I lived nearby, I like to come by on a regular basis, as I am sure that the exhibits chnage from time to time.

Angie H

Full of culture. Once a week free admission. In heart of Austin, TX

Kewei Shi

It's a fairly small but intereting more towards an art gallery. There's a small chapel house in one exhibition room. An artist and his work were there when I visited. He's very nice and he explains everything regarding to his painting to you.

Ann Marie Duran

Golden Record, my Favorite Part

Sage

Definitely worth the drive to downtown Austin. The exhibits featured there are both emotionally moving, captivating, and culturally enlightening. Use of space is well executed, and well maintained. Great art and great staff!

Timothy Williams

This was a really cool Mexican art shop. Lots of different types of art by different artists. The store itself is pretty small, but they have some unique and funny gifts as well. You notice the art as you walk by and window shop, but if you go inside there's so much more to see. The staff was nice and helpful.

Went during the Viva la Vida fest and things were a little hectic. I think there should be some discussion about how to better handle the museum end of everything happening that day.

David Stephanie Allen

Mexic-Arte Museum is a small but wonderful museum. Every exhibit we have visited has been beautiful and interesting. We always learn a little something more from these talented artist. The culture and history displayed is rich and gorgeous.

Russell Spillers

Not kid friendly for sure. Pretty basic but very pricey. Wouldn't recommend it unless your a Mexican history buff.

Alice Walker

great vibe but wished the space was a little bigger. Very informative descriptions on the exhibit if you need some background on the cultural meanings of the exhibited pieces. The art on the exterior walls of the building are really cool too. It's so fascinating to see some dark themes like deaths almost celebrated and be displayed so vibrant

Jon Free

Wanted to go for many years, a small charming museum with exclusively Mexican art/cultural exhibitions, when I was there a saw a wonderful day of the dead show, with several family alters, various scaled brightly colored paper mache sculptures, and historical prints and a video presentation, great gift shop with a range of gifts and Mexican candy chocolate and drinks, all against a soundscape of a exquisitely creaking wooden floor

Rafael Ledesma

Nice clean place full of nice stuff

Joe Pattavina

Very interesting and unique artwork in here. As with all museums, some of it I really connected with and other's not so much. Some was a little too extravagant for me but may be just right for someone else. So if you're up for something a little different, I recommend checking it out on sunday's as it's free.

Brian Heeke

Unique downtown museum. I could see it getting bigger one day.

Shawn Gonzalez

Free entrance to look over Mexican art which I believe it's amazing. Got to try it out

Brook Hensley

Something cool too do in your free time they have a nice gift shop as well

Jacqueline Micklos

I would say this is more of a small collection of items than a museum. The largest portion of the exhibit was a border wall themed area where you can write a message on a bandana and tie it to the wall. The other was an area dedicated to the recent tragedy at the mall in Texas. Personally would have liked to have seen more about artists and culture and less political commentary. Frida was all over the gift shop. Nowhere in the museum proper.

Elizabeth Karlin

I loved the Dia de los Muertos altars. Inspired me to read about Khalo. Great gift shop.

Kamille Chavez

Beautiful museum!

Jade Mountain House

Awesome art great gift store

Kimberly Erin Merriott

Loved the atmosphere, sales people in the gift shop area were extra helpful. The name, also, caught my eye and I was pulled up in. Totally worth a visit

Ryan Reyes

Always make sure to stop in when I'm in town. Always great exhibits and I DARE YOU to go into the gift shop and leave empty handed. It's impossible

Ruth Alegria

Congratulations a wonderful intimate Mexican American view !

Sara Juarez

I'm sorry but the museum doesn't have anything...

Terri St. Arnauld

One of Austin's gems that I need to visit at least once a year.

Stephen Niemeyer

Awesome art space with exceptional rotating exhibits, a great director and an amazing store. I love this place!

Christina Ramirez

A must see. Was lucky enough to go during one of their special events. Tribute to Dia de los muertos.

Matthew Bethke

Good time for the whole family. My nephews liked looking at all the exhibits and they are in grade school. I liked the history, and information they provided.

Cesar Olivares

Eh it’s ok. Not very Mexican

Yajaira Marmolejo

It's smaller than what I expected but still a good museum.

Desi Mora

Great show if Amado Pena art. Also enjoyed the Frida Kahlo paintings.

Danielle McMillen

During October they allow artists to pick up a blank canvas and bring back to be in a collaborative art show. This is badass. I got my art in a museum show with my name next to it! Their gift store always has something for the skeleton lover.

Shawn Sullivan

Pretty cool, small museum with a variety of pieces and displays. Most placards also in English. Gift shop had some unique items. No bookbags in the exhibits, just set them behind the counter. Not bad for $5.

Julian Ferrer

The place was ok

Blue Jet

Really cute! Loved it!

Cristian Perez

Great place to just take a small trip. They may not have alot of stuff to show but it was the best place I have been to. The art really moved me.

Nina Johnson

Good art, small collection.

John Dean

Small and eclectic. I cannot wait to pass along what I saw to the art teachers in my largely Latino high school.

Cloud Ramza

Small but nice

Nick Evan. Hurwitz

Very unique place small but definitely worth visiting

Eliseo Perales

Absolutely Amazing! A Great Space with a Wonderful Atmosphere! Bravo!¡!¡!¡

Ricardo Godigna

Too small but I like the exhibition

Raju Majumdar

Really cool

August McCann

Very poignant place to be in this brutal political climate.

Elizabeth Valle

I can't give a proper rating on the exhibit itself because I was denied entry into Mexic-Arte I arrived at 4:30 on a Monday. They close at 6 on Mondays right? WRONG. It had already closed. It was cold and rainy and the doors were already sealed shut. There was a woman at the desk and I signaled for her to come open the door. She came to the door but didn't open it. She simply came to the door and signaled with her hands for me to get going. Almost in a "Shoo! Bad dog" kind of way. I was appalled by such actions, she could have told me that they closed early but no..SHOO! Looked like a cool place but whatever.

Margaret Schwarz

Go now and see the John Cobb exhibit. Look him up. AMAZING!!!! Egg tempura with gold leaf and both SPIRITUAL and EXCELLENT ART! I have rarely seen any artist pull that off. John Cobb is the real deal! Kudos to Mexic-Arte Museum for the exhibit!

Criz Cova

SXSW 2019 Exibition. Lovely

Felipe Corominas

Good service, good food and prices ok!

lory medearis

Beautiful gallery!

Stephanie Norwood

They were in between exhibits when I was in town, so there wasn't too much to look at. But I still give this place a 5-star review. The gift shop is super nice (I spent at least 20 minutes just looking at all the neat stuff and picking up some souvenirs) and the woman working the gift shop was very polite. My partner has a business trip to Austin in November and I hope I can catch an exhibit next time!

Anita Ramos

Great place to visit...a blast from the past. Most arcade games work.

Lord Warg

Small gallery. I would not call this a museum and all the art is for sale so IT s a bit weird to have to pay to get in... Anyway, a fee few pieces definetly worth more then they asking price. Looking for new art? Go there!

Marie Stawarz

Very very small. I went on a free day, and I'm glad I didn't pay for it because I got through everything in under 30 minutes. Still a nice place to stop, and had some cool pieces, but not worth much of an entrance fee in my opinion. They do put on one of the most amazing festivals though.

Debbi Macfarlane-Clayton

A fun little museum. Great range of art. If you are into history of artist in Texas and Mexico, take the time, is a great spot.

Erin Kelly

Cool museum, free on Sundays. We went while they were doing a fundraiser auction, I would be curious to see it on a not-auction day.

Jenn Caffey

Tiny museum. Art was interesting but doesn’t take much time to get through. Shop has a lot of interesting finds.

Ricky Parks

Go on Sunday when its free, it's awesome. It's great seeing all the different types of art from other parts of the world.

Jennielle Strother

Excellent museum with a great store.

Andrea Tomlin

Small, but enjoyable. Nice gift shop. Modern art.

Juan Austin Tx

It's like a relatives house.

Kristie Ramirez

Will never come back due to their customer service. I went once before in the summer and another customer had asked to use the restroom and they nicely let her use it. I came back a second time during their day of the dead festival and I paid to get into the museum to look around, we also shopped at the store and asked if I could use the restroom and they said no, I told them last time I was here they let a customer use it and the girl rudely say well it’s only for employees, I am pregnant by the way and it’s hard finding places on 6th street that let you use the restroom if you’re not a customer. I was a paid customer here at the museum and also pregnant so felt it wasnt very customer service friendly. We ended up walking up and down the street looking for a place because I had to pee really bad and was holding my pee until we found somewhere that let me. We didn’t end up going back into the museum even though we paid and was already in there because of their rudeness.

Jisenia C

A great place to gift shop! There's a lot of unique items and the front desk lady was very kind. The only downfall was that the gallery was closed when I went but I'm sure it's a wonderful experience when it is open.

Mary Valle

Beautiful authentic place to take children of All ages to learn more about there ancestors.

darren alexander

Nice place to walk around. I like all the stickers

Kevin Sharkey

I enjoyed the time here. The exhibits were very interesting and the back area had so much local artist for sale. We even got to meet the gentleman who created the main exhibit so that was nice. Well worth paying for but we got lucky and showed up on a Sunday where it's free.

Kenneth Thompson

The space is great for families to learn and discovery.

Debbie Pepin

They advertise they're free.. Well at least the gift shop

Analisa C

Really cool place! As a Mexican American woman, it's absolutely fascinating to see artwork about your people. The museum was small, with a cute shop selling Mexican art and knick knacks. Admission is FREE on Sundays, and they do student discounts. Only 4 stars because when my boyfriend and I went, they only had one exhibit open. Not their fault, still was a great experience!

Erick Fernandez Avalos

Great exhibition during SXSW

Olivia Eaton

Sadly I came when their galleries were closed for the installation of the next exhibit. However, the gift shop was open and full of really neat books and art and cool gift ideas.

Celina Zamora-Torres

Love all the new young local artists they motivate to show their work and inspire aspiring artists to venture into the world of art. Great environment, community engagement, and lots of amazing selections of art to purchase!

Jose Martinez

Good tacos...

Jarjeet Singh

Great exhibits. I learned aspects of central American culture that I did not know.

SuperKidreaper

Beautiful Mexican culture items very colorful little gift shop but at the time i went the Museum art gallery was closed for a new installation. Definitely call ahead to see if the gallery is open.

Linda Hernandez

Loved the art and gift shop! Quaint little museum. Definitely want to visit next time I am in town.

Deborah Niemer

Wonderful print exhibit. Description of printmaker CV accompanied each exhibit.

Cecily Gordon

Small, but cool gallery. If you're looking for something to do and have 45 minutes or so of free time, this a great spot to check out.

Liz Noerrac

Very nice place !!!

tyler wolf

Vibrant art. Loved the exhibit about day of the dead dances!

Matt Daniel

Some good art pieces. Discount available for students.

Robert Knight

Exhibits are well laid out, was a lot of fun to walk through. Museum was dedicated to one artist when I went, was cool to see different artwork from throughout his career.

Beatrice Edgar

Enjoyable cultural experience. Very informative for a small venue .

David Lerma

Came here for an event. Interesting displays.

Mike Burke

Nice place for a 30 minute break. Reasonably priced.

Scott Gray

Interesting exhibits about Mexican-American culture. Really cool gift shop.

Jeronimo Chutrau

Being a mexican american museum display descriptions should also be written in spanish. The exhibit was quite poor.... + no seating + no restrooms and quite hot inside. Do not recommend it.

Sergio Torres

A little small in my opinion but I liked the art and the fact that you can color a sticker so other people can see your art too.

Savannah Workman

What a neat find! We stumbled upon this little museum as we were walking and decided to check it out. We discovered that they offer free admission on Sundays, though donations are requested if possible. They are currently hosting a Día de los Muertos exhibit, which features lots of current Mexican artists. A very educational and intriguing exhibit that you may not expect to find in downtown Austin. A great representation of Mexican art and culture and as a Spanish teacher, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. Definitely check out the gift shop for some unique finds!

Nancy Henriquez

Lots of interesting and beautiful Mexican art. Also great for souvenirs however had to give it one star because we just felt very unwelcomed from the second we walked in the door. We said hello to the young lady sitting at the counter. Her acknowledgement was to look up and give us a nasty look. We were the only people in the store for about 10 minutes and she never spoke a word or looked up or smiled. We left without buying anything. It was really uncomfortable

Rachel A Scott

This small museum is well worth a visit. At certain times of the year, elaborate Mexican shrines to the dead are on display, made by family members, and every one is different, as it will feature objects that had meaning to the departed. Some will be very personal and poignant, and some funny. All are colorful and interesting. I was pleased that you are allowed to take photographs. I've visited twice, different years, and the displays were entirely different. There is also a section with items for sale at very reasonable prices. A good place to find a momento to take home for yourself, or for a friend or family member. The staff are friendly, and the experience is delightful. It is great for what it is, but it is a small place, which is the only reason I didn't rate it five stars.

Marc Starvaggi

One of my favorite museums I have visited. Cannot praise the thought-provoking, moving exhibits enough. If you're thinking about visiting, absolutely do so

Omar Rodríguez-Ortiz

I went here with kids from the school I worked at. They enjoyed the field trip. It is all about modern art, mostly Mexican of course. You park on the street. It is pretty small, you won't spend more than 45 mins in it.

Jyoty Subramanian

Cute and nice museum.Good for half hour visit to explore some unique art.

Irene Petrov

Small museum in downtown Austin, rotating exhibits of modern art in various media by Latino artists. Free on Sunday. Parking in the streets. Will come again to see a new show.

Katie DeVoss

Loved the intricacies of the Nativity scene, also the ability to purchase some of the art was nice

Google User

We visited the museum today specifically to see the nativity scene exhibit and it is fantastic. Admission is free on Sundays and parking in the area is easy.

John Chlebowski

I am an oil paint landscape artist...this museum exhibits a great variety of art mediums...nice...no admittance fee on Sundays...

Ugur Gadimbayli

Museum is under construction, only gift shop is open.

Good art

I would love to give this gallery a higher rating but they have some work to do on notifying the public on their schedule re: exhibit changing. My husband and I had been looking forward to touring their gallery (and hopefully picking up a piece). Unfortunately, when we arrived we were instructed that they would be changing their exhibits later that day so they had closed off the gallery. We still checked out their gift shop - which has some wonderful items btw - their "internet was down" so we were fortunate we had just enough cash to pick up a few small items. We finally asked if the pieces in display now or the new exhibit would be shown online for this interested in purchasing...no dice. I hope this gallery gets some help to modernize their establishment significantly.

Jillian Newman

I really apprecieate this gallery. It's well curated and helps to fills the gap of cross-cultural art in Austin. The last opening that I attended had photographs, large paintings, an instillation piece, and even mariachis. A full experience of art from across the border. They also have a large gift shop in the front which is fun to poke around.

Pamela Kowalski

I go every year in October for the Day of the Dead Altars .Its always a beautiful and moving display . Great place to take kids . I really love this little place ! Free admission on Sundays .

San Dy

Lots of collectibles & cute stickers!!

Alan Serna

Beautiful space with powerful exhibitions and murals.

Kent Ray

"This is an amazing place where you find all the cultures at a single place. This a huge diversity place."

Kimberly Eggett

On my first trip to Austin, the first thing I wanted to do was go to the Mexci-Arte museum. Coming from NC, I’m limited on museums that celebrate being latinx/chicanx and loved walking through here. Plus, it’s free on Sunday, so save the money to spend in their gift shop!

Ash

great art, and love the Mexican heritage behind it!

Michael E

Great gallery. Only wish they sold prints of some of their artwork.

Brenda Z

Love this place. Their altars were awesome.

Rolando Castillo

Great place, must visit, Great gift shop. Visited to see #Frida's exhibition and it was a really nice place. Small place, and for the love of humanity fix those floors lol (not a big deal, more like laughable). Please donate to the museum, is something that we should really feel proud of, they do an excellent job!

Jay Vargas

I love this museum in downtown Austin! I always have a great time here.

Jazz Gaspar

Great way to celebrate dia de los muertos. There was arts and crafts activities for the kiddos.

MrMoruss78 Mo

This quaint little museum packs lots of cool and unique, eclectic exhibits and art pieces from local artists and Mexican artists. Since the wife and I went during October, Dia De Los Muertos theme was very prominent. There were authentic altars, great still photos depicting official Dia de Los Muertos scenes from Mexico and a big Jack Skelington type sculpture front and center. Equally as interesting are some of the thought provoking descriptions accompanying the pieces. It's a awesome spot to come with little ones and at $5 it's an affordable. Come check it out!

Tanner Schelle

Really interesting art! It's also free on Sunday.

Armand Daniels

Fun...beautiful art! Always something new to see

Angie Glass

This museum has a wonderful rotation of exhibits! The admission price is only $5 for adults and $4 for students. They sell lovely items in the gift shop that help support the museum. I only wish that their signs were a bit more descriptive of the art on display, especially for the video media.

Saul

Awesome museum. Will definitely return and next time it’ll be with more people.

Bryan Clark

Only the gift shop area was open when I visited. It was very hot inside as well.

Melanie Cohn

Beautiful museum! And a fun gift shop.

Anthony Cioffi

Wonderful collection of Mexican art. Great little gift shop too. Feels good to be a tourist man.

Lindsay Cullen

Beautiful and eye opening experience to help brigde a gap between people's knowledge of Mexican Influrnce in the culture of America. Canadian coming to Texas for the first time and I absolutely loved this stop.

James Phetteplace

Great museum for a short or long visit!

Bethany Bates

A small but interesting collection of art and history packed into an easy-to-access storefront downtown. Very unique and thoughtfully curated. The gift shop is cute too.

Flower Sifuentes

Beautiful information inside and culturally rich.

Johnny Martinez

Such a cool art museum. Local Austin pieces and great price to view, free! Chick at the front desk, super rude. Think she is not happy there. Hope the best for her future non-customer facing endeavors. Otherwise, great venue.

death by paradox

Cool gift shop and cute Mexican culture items. Gallery was closed for installation; I just wished there were signage outside stating so.

Kristina Frances SSM

Super cool space, would love to come back and really see the exhibits.

Elise B

This little museum throws some fun events. They feature local artists and have a nice shop when you enter. If you're looking for a quick museum to visit, this is it!

Rob Rice

Walked in to buy a candle at 4:52pm. The dark haired lady at the register just said "we're closed" as we walked in. We would've been 3 minutes, tops. No sweat, we'll spend our money elsewhere! Thanks, we'll be sure to spread the word.

Marc Mireles

Amazing museum. Very nice art and artifacts of the Mexican culture. Plenty of art to see and appreciate.

Richard Trimble

Small museum but very interesting spot! It was a fun visit to visit the exhibits, especially the Frida Kahlo painting. Please visit the gift shop if you are a Frida fan!!
