Terrific site of important American history. The remodeled gift shop is likely to be very good once completed. History buff, rejoice!

A lot of history there. Took a couple of hours to walk through everything. Worth seeing.

Will Beauchamp

Great place to get away from civilization and see a really Historic place. When we were there they had a great model created in the visitors center and it showed just how huge this place was. Walk the grounds and the ruins and you could imagine what this place was like back in the day. Would like to go back. If you like Texas History this is a great item to have on your bucket list.

Really cool place. Staff in the Gift Shop/ where you pay admission are always super friendly. It is a self paced tour with a labeled map. Very pretty views. Walk down the trail to the kiln and river is definitely worth it, I wasn't going to do it this time but when i told the staff I was there to take bluebonnet pictures she highly recommended it.

Be sure to check their event calendar to try and time when the site will be doing time era performances. A great fort to visit. Chocked full of information on how life unfolded 100+ years ago. When you visit any of the forts in Texas be sure to ask why the forts were placed at their locations. The soldiers back then were certainly experts in finding the landscape that gave the best advantage to them.

Angela Powell

A great piece of history. Beautiful place.

I looked at all the buildings and area grounds in about an hour. Lots of information on the Buffalo Soldiers. If you're in the area or passing by, I'd recommend stretching your legs here.

Neal Ulmer

This partially reconstructef is a great place to visit for couples and families. It is really quiet during the week and a great place to roam around!

Will Bush

Wonderfully well preserved, very educational.

Melissa Shepherd

Great stop for kids who like history. Lots of walking without shade so wear a hat. We spent about 1 1/2 hrs looking around. Gift shop has some great stuff I haven't seen in ever other gift shop. We visited while camping at the caverns of sonora.

Andrew McBurney

This is an amazing old fort. Many buildings refurbished to look like they did when the fort was active U.S. Cavalry. When I went, there was no one else there. The fort is on a hill and that day, a line of storms had blown through earlier, there was a bright blue sky and the hill was windswept. It wasn't hard to imagine it was 150 years ago.

Donnie Dixon

Really neat to see the the old buildings. Was surprised at how big the fort was. I liked the hands on displays in the museum to see how the soldiers dressed and how heavy it all was. Couldn't imagine wearing all the wool in this climate.

Annie Laurie Shaw

Yvette Ballard

Wonderful history and museum large enough to spend hours studying how they lived, like a time capsule.Must see.Nice gift shop too

Herb Handyman

Lots of restored buildings. Historical placards in most of them. Only encountered one site person, at the reception. Paid for entry, $3 per for seniors. A suggested tour in pamplet form (or website) would be helpful.

Bob Jamison

Loved it. Well preserved

Margaret Wilson

Love the history behind it.

Sheila Scarborough

Extraordinary place, beautifully presented.

Skip Dupont

Interesting trail. All self guided. Well worth the visit. Not totally restored, but what is tells you a story that is fascinating.

This place is awesome

Extensive historical structures in tact. Staff was very knowledgeable regarding frontier fort history. My only complaint was the museum was being remodeled and I couldn't go into some of the furnished structures when I was there.

Jerry Eastman

Outstanding Texas fort, which has been renovated to some extent; however there are still ruins of the old buildings remaining.

Edward Luzadder

An old fort in the middle of nowhere used to protect Texans and those going West seeking a new life. All that is left of the actual town is a US Post Office and a volunteer fire department. It is a quiet place long forgotten in history, but not forgotten by historians.

Paul McWhorter

I always look forward to visiting Ft. McKavett Historic Site. Given that it is in an isolated area, it really gives you the feel for how things were a hundred years ago. The staff at the fort are courteous, knowledgeable and helpful. Have always enjoyed stopping in and visiting this attraction.

Phil Graf

Awesome site with a ton of original structures. Good living history programs.

Mary Decker

If you love Texas history this is a beautiful sight. The grounds are very well kept and many of the restored buildings are open to see. Staff was very friendly and they have a scavenger hunt for kids to keep them engaged while you look around. The site is large so expect a lot of walking. Clean bathrooms, gift shop and museum there as well.

Wesley Sexton

It was pretty cool. My family and I enjoyed the history of it. But a man in a silver Ford pickup followed us around the whole time, watching us like we were going to vandalize something and it a bit of a mood killer.

melissa robbins

Andy Mac

Way cool place

Bobbie Browning

Didn't know it was not opened today so we drove 2 1 /2 hrs just to see from afar.

Hailey Shannon

Ken Perry

Very interesting site! Many volunteers dressed in 1850s garb presented period artifacts and crafts. The brass band and food was also wonderful. Reinacted rifle and cannon fire was also an interesting feature. I was regrettably unable attend the local native dance presentation. The visitors center was interesting but very narrow in scope

Scott Spiva

Matthew Leopardi

Middle of nowhere but worth it. You really get the feel what it might have been like to live there when the fort was active.

Chris Florance

Sprawling site with largely intact frontier army outpost. Great way to experience history and Texas nature.

Rick Cope

Kathryn Patteson

Beautifully restored and still being restored Texas fort. The grounds and views are great but the close up access to restored, furnished cabins and buildings is amazing. We visited early one morning, few people around, very pleasant staff. There are informative signs at every turn but being able to look right in at barracks and quarters which are furnished as if in use is very nice. All that is missing are the soldiers.

Barbara Brown

Historical integrity preserved very well. Historians very educated about the fort, people and area. Grounds very well maintained and clean. Would recommend.

Anthony Hodges

Cool piece of history in the middle of nowhere. Glad we stopped.

Daniel Kellogg

Great place to learn about Texas frontier forts after the Civil War!

Betsy Brown-Bland

Gorgeous scenery, fantastic historical preserve. Be sure to hike the trail to the San Sabo headstrong and first mill sites. Rugged rocky terrain following river bed up, but there is a less rugged trail marked. Self tours. Neat!

Karen Eastman

Good place to visit to learn about the Fort and the history behind it.
