Fascinating!
Wonderful. Her life very interesting!
A really neat museum made out of the house of the sculptor.
I really liked this. Aspects of Austin's cultural history you won't find anywhere else.
This is one of the first places I toured when deciding whether to move here. I found the history fascinating.
Small and special! Loved the stories given for each piece and the ladies working there were more than willing to provide you with even more history. Very nice and highly recommended!
This place is pretty cool, and exploring the house is part of the experience.
A forgotten contributor to Texas history, a feminist before there was the word. A local and state historic landmark, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1972.
Small but nice and quiet
Really nice!
Actually we were at shipe park and at the creek by elzabeth ney...rather than at museum t...this day. However i ve been going to the museum and this location since i lived next door to the museum in 1976 ...and have very fond memories of my first austin rental!!!!
Learned so much about this very impressive sculptor
small but mighty just like Elizabeth herself!
Cool place
A quaint cozy sculpture museium in the original artists home.
Beautiful building and art museum with walking trails around the property - must see on a visit to Austin
Small museum, but very nice and full of information and sculptures. The woman working was very knowledgeable, greeting everyone that came in and telling them about Elizabet Ney, and she has lots of information to give for any questions you might have. Elizabet was quite an interesting person and I strongly recommend visiting here if you are in Austin, especially since the museum and parking are free.
An incredible museum that is very unique to Austin. It's a unique experience to be able to see the artist's work in her own space. It's free but donations are worth it to keep this incredible place going.
Absolutley exquisite
I love how well it is preserved. the staff was very friendly. I recommend everyone to visit here
Awesome little museum in the heart of Hyde Park! Numerous sculptures to see, but the best part is the architecture and beautiful artifacts found upstairs.
German sculpture artist's studio. This place was awesome. Who knew?
Beautiful house and museum for a German/Texas sculptor! Very influencial from the 1800s
Beautiful art work. The studio space is unreal. Be sure to visit the second floor as it has more historical items. Must see!
Quiet place to draw and/or sketch. Air Conditioned. A Texas must.
Great building, great experience, great people
Very simple exterior that looks like a castle, lovely wildflowers and the biggest agave bloom I've ever seen
Hidden gem in the heart of Austin; beautiful grounds around an interesting museum; docent was very knowledgeable
Amazing sculpture in the most unlikely place...
I had a great time at the free museum day today! This is a great place to visit - a cool museum in an awesome building hidden away in Hyde Park.
Great exhibit, but no curator on duty at time of visit
A true Austin treasure. Take an hour or two to appreciate the stunning pieces in the museum, not to mention the building itself is a treasure!
Kinda small, but really cool little castle type building. Lots of info about an influential Texan that not everyone had heard of.
Really nice museum, free to visit. Sculptures downstairs and the history of the home and area upstairs. Be sure to check out the decreed room on the 3rd floor and the extra gallery space on the first. There are sculptures around the property as well.
Very informative and a great place to walk around. The staff was knowledgeable and willing to provide answers. The curator gave a tour of "staff only" areas of the house and we were able to see some of the not on display sculptures. Her husbands work room has a hidden roof acces, very cool!
great little museum. beautiful plaster and marble statues
This place is FREE and they let you explore each room upstairs and downstairs. Open Thursday through sunday!
Small museum with a decent collection. A bit out of the way from the rest of the city.
One of the coolest museums I've been to.
Lovely spot in a charming neighborhood. Grounds are also used for small events which we enjoyed.
Great spot for a quick Austin history lesson.
Free to public..museum had docent (guides) to help you around or if you want to go alone cheat sheets. I love the fact it's free and about a female artist that I didn't ever hear about before. Please go to the web site and vote for them. More of these hidden gems need to be saved. No bathrooms..and staircases to climb.
Very interesting place
Upon my entrance to the Elizabeth Ney Museum the staff graciously provided a comprehensive overview of the artist’s life and times. Her work shows the visual strength of classical figurative training over a life of prolific portraiture. I look forward to returning to the Ney.
Hidden jewel in Hyde Park!
An artistically independent woman before societies accepted such characteristics in a female. Abundantly talented and charismatic personality with a determined character...as she swayed many kings and dignitaries to sit long and numerous sittings for her to sculpt them. The castle is a treasure filled with her sculptures she created when she and her husband resided there beginning at the turn of the century.
Super friendly staff. I hear if ya tip em good, they'll show ya the secret passage way to the governor's mansion.
We had a wonderful time at this museum. It is was well-worth the visit and you are time-transported to the years that Miss Ney lived there.
Interesting peek into a slice of historic Hyde Park life. Go upstairs and see the tower if you can.
Fascinating display in old Hyde Park section of Austin.
Wonderful museum & grounds planted with Texas native plants. Filled with amazing art made by an amazing woman.
Volunteer staff is very helpful and good at getting kids interested
Love this small quiet musuem. Whenever I'm in Hyde Park I always check to see of its open. Its fun to take visiting art-inclined family members and even those more interested in Texas/Austin history especially since the musuem is free. The staff is also incredibly nice and knowledgeable.
small and nice - don't have high expectations, it's not an extraordinary collection or anything, but if you are in the neighborhood or wanna do something for a couple of hours (specially with kids who like sculptures), do take a peek
Stunning art !!! And the lady that is working there is very knowledgeable !
My daughter and I visited Elisabet Ney Museum on our mother daughter weekend. I grew up in Austin and went to UT but never to this museum. We really enjoyed the sculptures, and learning about Elizabeth Ney. There's a nice walk down to the creek behind the museum. If you enjoy Texas history and art this is a must stop location and Austin. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and welcomed us warmly and answered all of our questions. I plan on coming back.
America's Oldest art studio
My daughter and I really enjoyed this very small and quaint museum. The staircase and attic floor was fun little extra, which the gracious guide informed us about.
They have the tub she died in.
Awesome little museum for hyde park.
Great historical trip!
Nice place, history
This place was beautiful. The house was cool and the statues on display were great
Amazing place to look at!
Awesome staff very friendly ready to help if you need anything!!!
The passion shared by the staff is contagious. Elisabet Ney was not only an interesting trailblazer but a fantastic artist. The understated architecture of her home and studio is a testament to the Germans in Texas. The collection of her art made in Europe and the latter collection made in Texas contain many exquisite sculptures. A divine island of tranquility in the city. Perhaps the most underrated museum in the city.
Friendly staff and very interesting collection and history. The building itself is a work of art!
Ney Day is wonderful for the kiddos! Music, crafts, face painting and lots of fun!
Wonderful, free, small. Make sure you go to the 3rd level
This was so fasinating and educational to see all of Nay's work. And it was Free!
Staff is very passionate about Ney and her story- fascinating and beautiful place!
This studio museum was amazing to explore. Love Elisabet Ney and her husband's history. The studio she designed was equally impressive. Her clay sculptures were beautiful, including the last piece she had worked on before she died, Prometheus! This place is a must for anyone visiting Austin. Architecture was incredibly designed and built by her, totally functional and resembled a small castle.
One of my absolutely favorite places in the whole world, it's got a beautiful history and in my opinion Ney is representative of what Austin,TX is all about.
Interesting tucked away museum. I love finding hidden gems
Talented artist and beautiful building. Serene grounds.
Great trails!
Beautiful location, building and amazing sculptures.
Just amazing Helena and I visited.
Great events!
This museum is beautiful. There are so many pieces of amazing work shown inside and the home/castle itself is beautiful. The only thing I would do differently is have information about Elizabet Ney. Maybe have a room set up the same way she did, or just a room about our her life and history in general. We couldn't find any information really about her in the house. We will definitely be back in the future.
The staff is really helpful and informative
For one thing, this was my Grandfathers Best friend when he was growing up. They lived next door to each other and played together all day every day sculpting. And that is all my Grandfather did his whole life. He ended up getting married and having 9 children. When the Depression came and people couldn't afford the Luxury of buying Art, he started making Tombstones. He carved all the Beautiful Roses, Flowers, Leaves, Letters and Scrollwork on the Tombstones to support his family. He and Elizabeth remained friends their whole lives.
The studio is preserved unbelievably well.
Great exploring! There was the house itself, the art, and most interestingly the history of the free spirited woman Elizabet Ney. The docents anecdotes about the artist were the best.
Informative and well layed-out museum. Learned a lot about Elisabet Ney and the role she played in TX history! Staff there (which I think we're volunteers) were extremely knowledgeable and promptly answered any questions. It's free. And also near Quacks bakery which you could definitely stop by and have a snack afterwards.
local history under the radar. german female sculptres marries scottish scientist and moves to texas. small but interesting display in aged custom home.
It's beautiful - I hope they maintain the place little better
Great art
Love the history and the museum itself is beautiful
A welcome surprise! Fascinating museum to an artist I wasn't familiar with.
Awesome experience great history buffs who loved sharing information and giving tours all free and a must see
Such a fun little museum. They have a lot original plaster casts and a couple marbles. The building and lot were awesome with secret doors and a bookcase door that we got to look at. The kids loved all the secrets. Nice little contemporary show of wall art in one room that is has rotating shows.
Great art, but the stairs are not for people who don't like heights, or have claustrophobia
Beautiful, original home and grounds of Elisabet Ney. Lots of exhibitions of her work. Some originals, some copies. Reflects her life, times and work. Entry is free. Well worth the effort and time.....besides how often do you find thius kind of quality education and visual displays for free.
A must Texas history experience.
A hidden gem, cool sculptures and architecture. Great for a rainy day like today
Beautiful grounds helpful staff and nice sculptures in a historic building
Really nice staff, great collection and cute location!
The Elisabet Ney Museum have just reopened after a renovation. The new HVAC system is quiet and definitely made the experience more enjoyable. I really like the way the museum is set up. It's definitely a little gem in the middle of Hyde Park.
Miss Ney has such raw anatomical skill and I love visiting. The guides/workers here are passionate about her and her work, so make sure to ask them for a quick tour of their favorite pieces, it's worth it to hear the descriptions and history spoken to you with interest.
Great historic site. Wish I had known about her when I was taking art courses in college. She may have been mentioned in the art history books, but barely. Beautiful studio! Helpful attendants.
I love showing friends this hidden gem in hyde park. The sculptures, the history is all cool and its donation based.
The Elisabet Ney Museum is a historical time capsule in the heart of Hyde Park. The building original building was Ney's studio and home for many years. It features unique architecture of wood and stone masonry from the early 1900's. Inside you can find a collection of Elisabet's tools, cast statues, and other artistic endevors.
A great place to visit.
This was such a delightful surprise of a museum. It is small but packed with sculptures and art if the late Elisabet Ney. Our guide was packed full of information and passion about the artist. She happily gave us an inside to the cutting edge, unique mind of the owner. We learned so much and finished off with some sculpting of our own outdoors on the grounds. Don't let the exterior fool you, there is a trove of treasure within.
Great tour. Learned so much history.
Unusual for a museum, you can get quite a feel for the people who once lived here. Elizabeth Ney kept her homes as simple and rustic as she could, leaving stone walls rough and worn floors unfinished. She might picnic on fine linens and silver, but the buildings remained a bit wild. It does not feel like a place clinically clean and preserved, but an environment conducive to art and creativity.
This is my personal favorite museum & piece of Austin history nestled in Hype Park. Elisabet Ney's work is well lit & beautifully arranged within her historic home which was also her studio. It also has piece's associated with her life. I enjoy bringing visiting friends & family here. Open Wed-Sun 12noon-5pm. (It is near Shipe Park.)
An awesome place to explore your artistic side
Polka Apocalypse! Great festival. And beautiful house. Well worth a free tour
(Translated by Google) It's a very nice building only I have not had the chance to find it open (Original) Es un edificio muy bonito sólo que no e tenido la oportunidad de encontrarlo abierto
Went to the museum yesterday and loved it. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly. The art was of course beautiful. Awsome .
Very informative. Beautiful building and estate.
Elizabet Ney's historic Texas home is a beautiful art museum of classic treasures, beautiful grounds, and a rich history.
Amazing place
Must see!
