That was my 1st time in texas Houston my friend took me there OMG the food was perfect

Museum is nicely done and includes a wide range of historical information and displays to understand the origins and long-term contributions of these American soldiers. Start with the video to get a good overview of the history and of the museum origins. Nice stand-alone building with ample (free) parking. Well worth the price of admission!

Kedar Davé

Great museum and venue to host any memorable event! The staff are extremely polite and helpful.

Gerry Manoharan

Hugely interesting and a forgotten slice of history

Dwight Jones

It was absolutely amazing! All the history and the nice gentleman explaining how things were back there really helped to paint a picture of what the soldiers went through! I loved every minute of it

Awesome museum! Too much information I was not taught in neither elementary, middle school, nor high school. Pretty freaking sad. If I ever have children, my child will learn about the Buffalo Soldiers and the many amazing Black Americans who are always forgotten in American history discussions

Cyn C.

Awesome museum. Loved the free admission day on Thursday. I was able to take the kiddos and they enjoyed it. Plenty to see. I liked the different rooms with all types of different memorabilia.

Jennifer D

Met the last living Buffalo Solider SGM James William's. Best museum ever!

Stephanie Booth

Even though the museum is small, there was so much to see and learn that you really might need to visit it twice. They offer programs and activities for children as well.

Laura Nelson

I've been visiting there since I was a kid and the new location gives it such a new experience!

Please note that the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum is the ONLY museum in the United States that is dedicated primarily to preserving the legacy and honor of the African-American soldier. It houses the largest repository of African-American military history in the world. In fall 2012, the museum moved into its new 23,000-square-foot home at the Houston Light Guard Armory in Midtown. The historic armory space is seven-times the museum’s previous space, giving the national museum significantly more room for reenactments, exhibits and lectures. The process of relocating the museum took nearly a decade to realize. The 10th cavalry, an all African-American Army unit, was nicknamed Buffalo Soldiers by Cheyenne warriors in 1867 out of respect for their fierce fighting ability. Over time, the term Buffalo Soldier was applied to all African-American soldiers. The museum aims to articulate, collect, display and preserve historical artifacts, documents, videos, prints and other historical memorabilia which detail the history of the brave men and women who overcame extreme adversity while fighting the great American wars. Visitors will see artifacts stretching from the Revolutionary War through both world wars to present day conflicts. Their hours: Monday-Friday 10am-5pm; Saturday 10am-4pm. Thursdays are FREE (from 1pm-5pm). They are closed on Sundays.

A must see Museum. So much knowledge and History

Romain Mirosa

It s a small museum with a relatively limited collection of item. The lack of funding is very apparent unfortunately. It is a shame because the topic is extremely interesting and worthy of a better funded museum.

Terrence Pace

Great place to visit

Michael Robertson

I liked the tour. The staff was friendly and informative. They do a great job in showing how people of African descent have made great contributions in making our country great. Most of the information that they share will not be taught in our school systems; but it is a part of our history.

Interesting military history museum with a focus on the role of Buffalo Soldiers / African Americans. This is an important part of American military history that is sometimes overlooked. The museum is rather small and can be seen in about an hour. It's free on Thursday afternoons.

Mel A. P.

This place is great for learning about the often overlooked parts of American history as it pertain to people of color and their committed service in the U.S. armed forces. I have brought guest from Kenya and South Africa, and each time they have left in awe of the rich history they had no idea existed. A great place for those who love history and broaden their knowledge.

Charlotte Sias

Attended this venue for a gala/banquet. I am a Houstonian, and I had never been here before. I was impressed! The building has 3 stories: 1st floor is the gift shop (and i guess the museum); 2nd floor was an open, spacious room...beautifully decorated...tall ceilings that were loft-style to the 3rd floor...with a stage. The 3rd floor seemingly had a kitchen because the caterer and staff were up there preparing the food (which might be an inconvenience for a catering staff to go up & down stairs to serve guests). Overall, nice venue. (Please LIKE if you agree with this review or find it helpful. Thanks)

Alexander Savory

This was my first time visiting the museum. I learned a lot about black history; more specifically about not only " Buffalo Soldiers but about how blacks in the US MILITARY are being treated today. I also learn about certain atrocities that were done to them after serving in the military. Mr. SHE James Williams should supported for his current service and a video cut to record a lot of the historical facts that is not told in any of the historic records.

This museum has been on my list for several years. I finally got around to visiting, and I’m very glad that I did. They have a 15-minute video that gives you an overview regarding the history and some of the contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers. You can see actual uniforms as well as a coat made of buffalo skin. The museum features black contributions in the military not just during the era of the Buffalo Soldiers but all throughout Inited States history. They also have displays about women who served in the military sprinkled throughout and a video about a woman who posed as a man so she could serve in the military during the Civil War era. There’s also an exhibit paying homeage to many black astronauts. Although it is unrelated, it’s really interesting to see.

Bruce Martin

Exhibits lack solid focus on the actual Buffalo Soldiers and the overall collection I'm is that all Black military forces are seen as Buffo soldiers. Might better to describe as African American Military Forces Museum.

Alan Hogle

Helped set up for a wedding in their hall.... Beautiful. Great place for the history of the African soldiers who fought in the civil war. Lots of knowledge stored in those walls.

Elbert Walters

Great experience!! I attended with the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus. The rich history of the African American involvement in shaping these United States beyond what is universally taught like the civil rights movement was astounding!! Considering my status as a veteran, it moved me especially. And after all those extraordinary lessons, the venue had enough space for an all out gathering including a live band for entertainment. Great job!! I will be back to grab me more Buffalo Soldier memorabilia.

Courtenay Blair

Awesome experience. As the name suggests, this is a military museum forced on the African American armed forces experience. It was really cool to see that POV as you typically only here of a few stories. There is a very interesting exhibit relating to Houston, a court martial, and one one of the largest trials in American history. Stop by to see what I'm referring to

J C

This is a unique museum. It's an inspiration for 2 different reasons. First, of course, are the stories and histories of the Buffalo Soldiers. You will learn. Second, this museum is a labor and love of an individual citizen who began collecting memorabilia and history of the Buffalo Soldiers. His drive and dedication bring us this museum. Ask yourself how difficult it would be for any one of us to start a museum. I'm deeply impressed. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. I give it a five for its importance, the stories it tells, and the example it provides of one person's dedication to make it happen. The displays are full of information. I would love to see an organization or academic institution provide some significant funding.

Cindy Gauthier

Amazing Museum I never would have gone to had it not been for my friend's hubby from Canada (they were down for a visit). I don't have much interest in military history even though I am a vet, but this museum is very much about the stories of the people (one in particular stood out but I won't spoil the story) who came to be Buffalo Soldiers. The museum has discounts for seniors, students and is reasonable at $10 each. The map pamphlet lays the journey through the museum that you can take and you can obviously take as long as you need, watch or read what you want etc. There are two fascinating videos in two different rooms so make sure you catch those. Take the time to read the displays and in particular the letters that are written; amazing stories. The artifacts are cool and the whole building really captures the flavor of the time these soldiers served their country against all odds with great honor and pride. I was so interested in it all that I only took one photo, that my friend was moved by and wanted to remember. (I hope that is ok with the museum...) The only criticism is that is was very cold in the museum which is usually a good thing but it was distractingly cold which is not usual or desired. But hey that's why we carry jackets in our cars down south. Put this museum on your to-do list and I am certain you won't be disappointed. I would also note that they have a good sized gift shop.

S Williams

Exceeded my expectations. This museum is treasure, and I look forward to returning. Great range of collections, even better context w/ stories and narratives. The gift shop has a great variety of items. The staff members were nice. Plan on spending at least 30-45 mins here as there is such great material to take in. Not far from downtown and ample parking is available.

Sherina Charles

They hosted the Black Market Expo! Wonderful experience

Donald Parker

Great historical place and available for private events

Dyamond O. Gonzalez

Very nice... They event have a area for social events. Not sure how they rent it but it's nice and informative...

Vincent Clark

An overwhelming amount of African American Military display that is so moving. It's amazing that this museum attracts people of all races and from all walks of life. Although this was a spur of the moment visit, it was a detour with memories that will last a lifetime. Next time, I plan to take my gimbal and 360 camera once repaired. The staff are friendly and eager to assist. Thanks for the experience and thanks to my fellow Black Americans and all other Americans that served.

Pamela Turner

It was amazing to see the history of all who sacrificed so much for African Americans as a people and for this country that we live in today. We've come so far and even farther to go because of the ignorance that still exists.

Very interesting. Definitely see the Harriett Tubman reenactment! VERY GOOD. Excellent history. Can be a little on the slow side in sone parts. Overall, the history and historical artifacts are excellent! Definitely check out at least once. The front parking lot is small.
