A delightful museum experience. Beautiful artwork and friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit.
This is an excellent little art museum! There are some interesting saddles (including one of Pancho Villas's), and spurs. There are some great paintings and really quality sculptures. Free on Tuesday after 4 as well! The building is really great architecture and well laid out. I was impressed!
Thoroughly enjoyable experience. Worth making the trip.
Here for my brother's marriage , absolutely great place
It's an awesome place to learn about back in the old Western days
Beautiful art with a southern flare.
Very nice exhibit of historical items - all at a great value!
They had it set up so nice for the event I attended!
Great place lots to see. Was very interesting history of the Alamo.
Beautiful museum! Lots of beautiful artwork and displays! We visited on a Tuesday evening when it was free admission. Well worth the visit!
It was nice, lots of western history and military get in free
SUPER RUDE EMPLOYEES!! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY COMING HERE!!!
Very interesting and brilliant art and historical artifacts come and experience San Antonio's amazing collection and make beautiful memories with your family and friends.
Stumbled upon this museum this is our first time at the River Walk and we werent sure what to do. SO GLAD we went in! Must see especially if you're into cowboy culture.
This museum is really worth seeing. The Western art is great and the current special exhibit is, too.
Such a wonderful little museum. They have really great saddle and spur collections, not to mention paintings and bronzes. Elaborately designed, the model of Alamo battle is an impressive demonstration with ornate miniatures. Don't miss the open-air sculpture exhibit in their backyard- it's really awesome as well. A must visit in San Antonio.
Nice little museum featuring artwork depicting the old West. They have free admissions on Tuesdays so it's a good way to spend an hour or two for free.
Cool western art in a nice facility
SUPER cool museum right on the Riverwalk. Definitely worth stopping in if you've got to the time, and especially if you're just visiting Texas for the first time. Very reasonable to get in, 3 floors of exhibits including their special exhibits that change. Lots if neat stuff to see and learn about. It'll definitely change your view of the area and it's history.
I work professionally with the staff and they are passionate, incredible, and self driven. The history in this museum is incredible as well and they bring in guest speakers to speak. Excited for what the museum has in store in its future.
Beautiful hidden museum. Love the entire museum. They had a market for their members which was super nice. Great vendors that showed their art. There was a handlettering person who I was impressed with her art. Handlettering is so special, many kids no longer are taught cursive. Hope they do another market.
The special military discount was awesome! Loved the diorama of the Battle of the Alamo.
Beautiful art exhibits. Worth the stop
Beautiful museum with some great western art and history exhibits. I really enjoyed exhibits on the third floor; the saddle and spur collections in particular. Museum staff recommends starting from the 3rd fl. and working your way down. Admission is $10 and worth it. I wish I had been able to spend more time at the Briscoe but will definitely return.
It would have been great BUT they closed the 3rd floor after we were there 5-10 minutes..charged us the same general admission but we didnt get to see everything...we should have got a partial refund..
Very cool stuff, takes about an hour to do, maybe a little longer if you take your time to read everything, worth a visit if you can make it work
This wasn’t originally on the list of things to do. Our Rio Cruise guide mentioned that this museum has Santa Anna’s sword on display. We decided to check out the museum during their extended Tuesday hours since the rest of the days were already planned. It was a great surprise to learn that between 4-9pm on Tuesday the museum has free admission! It is a small museum but has beautiful Western artwork that depicts life of Texas cowboys, Native Americans, the Spanish Americans, and even a small exhibit dedicated to women. Yes, the exhibit did have one of Santa Anna’s swords. Next door is a small sculpture garden that is a little bit of paradise in a busy city. If you have time to check this out, I would add it the list.
Everyone was so nice when we walked in
Loved this museum. Very educational, full of beautiful historical items. Well worth the time spent.
Relatively small but with exceptional art and well curated in a beautiful setting. The Caitlin exhibit is stunning ! ! !
Loved this place! We went Tuesday during the free hours and it was totally worth it. My kids loved this musueam.
The Briscoe Western Art Museum was wonderful to visit. We visited on a Tuesday evening when admission is free, but would recommend visiting any time as the experience is well worth the cost. It was three floors of art, as well as an outdoor courtyard area. We really enjoyed all the paintings and sculptures. The model of the Alamo was amazing. We were just in town for a conference and happened to be staying at a nearby hotel, but if your at the River Walk, I highly recommend stopping in.
Beautiful western art and worth some time to wander through when in town.
Wonderful museum. We spent 3 very enjoyable hours studying every single display. My favorite were the Indian beaded items, antique banjo & the room explaining the history of the wells on the plains. My spouse's favorite was the history of & actual food caravan for texan cowboys. I bought many gifts for xmas at the shop-their children's books, socks, games toys and women's jewelry were fabulous. I would absolutely not miss it if you are there!
I really enjoyed the western artwork on display. The collection is truly awesome. The museum is inviting and I lingered for hours.
Very informative and engaging museum with astounding artifacts from the American West and Mexico, with lovely art pieces. I got myself lost here for hours in pure serenity. This was my favorite museum while visiting San Antonio. Staff was pleasant and helpful.
Neat spot and free on Tuesdays from 4-9pm! Great place especially for checking out art with an emphasis on the local region.
A lot of history and interesting facts
High quality museum. Much history!
I Great gifts and interesting facts about Texas!
Good place to learn about San Antonio history.
It is very nice and very informative of the Texas history. I really enjoyed the Alamo display that they have. The art details for paintings, sculptures, and diorama are really awesome. You have to pay 10 dollars but you'll get a discount if you are a military man, student, or senior. Restrooms are also clean and additional displays are in the garden. It is also accessible in the Riverwalk.
Was ok but they made us stop touching sculptures
A really fun place to visit while on the San Antonio River Walk. So much cowboy history. I loved seeing the old saddles, so of which are more than 100 years old. I really enjoyed the display of cowboy spurs -- an incredible variety of spurs. There is also a chuck wagon, over 100 years old. Several very memorable paintings and sculptures. If you love cowboys, you could easily spend 90 minutes here. A totally fun place.
The art is beautiful and there weren't too many people there. The Alamo scene was impressive and the history of the Texans, Mexicans, and Americans make for an interesting juxtaposition for today
Lovely museum and a great several hours we spent in there
Went for free entrance day with the grands 7 &5. Even the 5 year old had a good time looking at all the exhibits.
Great collection of western art and artifacts. Docents are friendly and very knowledgeable. We will definitely return!
The Briscoe is a must see for anyone remotely interested in Texas or art. There are amazing collections of spurs, saddles, paintings, bronzes, and Texas/Mexican artifacts from the Alamo and other southern wars. The permanent collection highlights local history and the museum often puts on special events. The building boasts beautiful decor, with ornately trimmed ceilings and a very powerful and large sculpture in the lobby. It's a go to stop if you're going through San Antonio Museums.
Pro tip: Tuesday night has free admission. The movie events in the summer are also free. This museum truly surprises. They have a lot of remarkable pieces, such as Pancho Villa's saddle, Santa Anna's sword, an a cannon from the battle of the Alamo. It's a great mix of historical artifacts and Western art. They have some good exhibits cone through.
Wonderful museum to visit. Interesting artifacts and diorama from the Battle of the Alamo. Three floors of artwork depicting, and often created in, the American West, spanning from 18th century to present. A reasonable $10 adult admission that is waived for active duty military and their families!
Truly a tribute to western art! Beautiful setting.
Nice collection of Western art, mostly bronze sculpture and oil paintings. Allow 45 minutes to see the main collection. Free on Tuesday evening. I enjoyed stopping in after a nice evening on the Riverwalk. Reverence, an oil by George Hallmark was my favorite piece.
There's usually a fee to visit, but they have a number of nights you can visit for free. There's a detailed model of the battle of the Alamo that has hundreds of soldiers that's very cool. On display are a stage coach and a mail coach that are fully restored. There's a large collection of western and Native American paintings and sculptures that are well worth a visit. They have guns and knives from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.
Beautiful Western art museum right beside the River Walk in downtown San Antonio! The best thing for me was the contemporary Western art collection from the Booth Western Art Museum near Atlanta - Into a New West. The 50 paintings from some of my favorite artists will be there until September 1, 2019.
Beautiful art work, especially the bronze sculptures. The prints on the 3rd floor are amazing as well. We enjoyed our time here being immersed in beauty.
Outstanding small museum. Great military discount. Something for everyone.
Good museum about the southern history. Lots of paintings and sculptures.
This is an excellent museum for several reasons. One is that it's just the right size. You can easily enjoy the museum in just an hour or two and you're not exhausted afterwards. The second reason this is an excellent museum is there are things in the museum that you would never find other places. For example, a large exhibit of spurs.
Free for military members with ID. When they say "Western Art," they don't mean Western Hemisphere, but the Old West. I was definitely thrown off by that at first, but once I figured out what was going on, it was a lot of cool paintings, sculptures, and artifacts from a different era. The building itself has excellent architecture, and is situated directly on the Riverwalk, which is nice. There is a giant replica of a Wells Fargo stagecoach, which is really cool.
This is a wonderful museum with lots of western art and artifacts. And, admission is free on Tuesdays from 4 PM until 9 PM. I highly recommend you make this part of your trip to San Antonio.
It was a very well done western museum. With the exception that ALL western museums tend to overlook, the black cowboy. And the historical relevance.
A great value for a museum. I liked the specific nature of the museum and it’s location on the river walk cements this place as a must-see museum. The diorama of the Alamo took my time at the Alamo and helped it to make better sense. The place is clean and fascinating.
Wonderful collection of bronze pieces. They also have a miniature replica of the Alamo. Some displays have narration. Lots of western and Native American art pieces. The building is original and the decor is gorgeous.
Short very neat museum. Mostly art, but a great spot to spend an hour while on the river
I was so enjoying the exhibits I almost missed the Fiesta Riverwalk parade. This is a must stop for me everytime I get to San Antonio.
It was amazing with the paintings and the things they had
This place is beautiful and a must visit! So many unique items to look at, and a great variety of art styles to look at.
My husband and I were visiting San Antonio when we happened across the Briscoe on a Tuesday afternoon. I dont know if they do this every Tuesday, but they had free admission from 4 to 9. I dont know what their normal entry fee is. We decided to go ahead and check it out, mainly to beat the heat while we waited for a certain event we were attending to begin. I wasnt super excited because I am not a big "artie." However, my trip through the Briscoe was one of the most engaging and educational experiences in San Antonio. It is filled with historical artifacts. Lots of native american, mexican, and Texan history to enjoy here. They even had Santa Ana's sword on display. They also have a complete replica of the alamo with figurines replicating the attack there. Audio recordings are there for you to listen to about some of the main players like Bowie and Crockett. There was also a modern western art exhibit next door in an adjoining building. I will say this is not a place most kids would enjoy. I am so glad we decided to stop by the Briscoe Wester Art Museum and highly recommend you visit as well!
Really enjoyed the display, worth the time to visit. Interesting art work and historical items.
If you like Western art and Texas history, you're sure to like the Briscoe Museum. It is housed in the former SA downtown library which has a history and beauty in its own right. I particularly liked the sculptures and a fairly extensive collection of Texas memorabilia.
Western history museum. We went on a Tuesday and the museum had free admission. Not alot to really see, but the price was right?
Impresive to see Francisco Villa's saddle and Santana's sword along with hundreds of exhibits of actual objects used since the time of the conquest and Mexican independence and the wars with the indians, etc.
Amazing place! Active duty military and 4 guest get free entry! A great place to check out while down town!
Great history lesson. Great exhibit.
An excellent museum. A nice small museum at a very fair price. Just the right size for a couple of hour visit, inexpensive enough to go back often. The quality of exhibits is excellent. There is room in the building to allow for some expansion. Nice slow expansion keeping the quality high would be fantastic. A great asset for San Antonio.
This museum tells my families history but the white British lady who works the front desk still insisted I buy a ticket... Needless to say I did not go in. Why would I need to look at art to remember a story I already know so well... What a shameful thing for her to do to a Briscoe. And to think I could have shared my wealth of knowledge on the subject... Maybe next time.
Had a wonderful time exploring the museum. They definitely have some fun items to view and good stories that go along with them. It gave us some insight on the history of Texas.
Went for Cowboy Day and had a great time. A hidden gem if western art and history in San Antonio.
May be good museum but couldn’t see as we reached the place after office hours. Few photos taken from outside
This is a very well sized museum. The exhibits are just right and I especially loved the diorama of the battle at Alamo. Definitely a well worth stop.
Let me preface by saying that I am not normally a museum 'guy'...but we had an ad-hoc visit here because we walked by on Tuesday night...free entry! Very cool Western art and museum pieces (murals, weapons, artifacts). We spent almost 2 hours there enjoying the well put together displays and intricacies of the various pieces and collections. Would have spent longer if I sprung for the audio tour... They have a modern Western artist wing as well, and that was a lot of fun too (no photos there though). Gift shop had a few fun things too! Worth a stop, even paying admission. Discount for military (and maybe first responders too).
The staff was incredible rude and the place is not worth your time. You will be better off going anywhere else in San Antonio.
We'd never even heard of this museum before and when we were researching Witte, Briscoe popped up. After reading the yelp reviews and looking at a lot of cool pics, we had to check it out...really glad we did! It's only been open about 4 years and it's a wonderful edition to cool things to do in San Antone. They had...beautiful western paintings...check, statues...check, stagecoach...check, photography...check...an amazing collection of artifacts in a beautiful building.
Top notch everything. Artworks, staff, location, building...love, love, love!
Maybe not my cup of tea, but I found very little of interest. I would not recommend
Really loved the collection and the exhibits. Amazing information and history along with talented art. Worth it.
Wide variety of Western art, from 1600's saddles to modern sculpture, they have a bit of it all. Very enioyable
This place is a best kept secret, in my opinion. Watch their website, they have all kinds of cool events, including family-friendly events like the excellent national Cowboy Day event that we attended this July. The museum itself is in a beautiful building in central downtown, the western art collection is excellent, and the people who operate the museum (and really cool volunteers who help put on events) make visiting the Briscoe a great and memorable experience.
Amazing museum!!! Impressed a lot! They have real Art collections!!! Highly recommend to visit them.
Newer museum in the area. High quality exhibits, good multimedia, neat and clean. Great design. Loved both the art and the historival displays. Three floors all with elevator access. Can be decently walked through in about 2 hours. Really nice gift store too.
Very well maintained museum with a nice collection of the old West artifacts and replicas. The staff are super nice and they even hold tours in English and Spanish. Highly recommended
Great western art and terrific model of the Alamo story. A contempory exhibition (temporary) currently on was also wonderful. Well worth cooling off here for a couple of hours!
I used to think MUZZZEUM but here is where the fun begins
This museum was the perfect size with 3 floors. We saw Pancho Villa’s saddle and Santa Anna’s sword and many amazing bronze sculptures and beautiful paintings. It was a great value with lots of TEXAS history.
Really nice collection and free on Tuesdays after 4pm.
Unique. I've never been to a museum quite like the Briscoe. The displays are very well thought out and designed. It's a great place to spend an afternoon. Also, adjacent to the outdoor sculpture garden is the historic Market Street water pumping station.
A really wonderful museum. Small and intimate with a great collection of bronzes, paintings and historical items. Well with a visit if you are in town.
Well worth the price of admission. Beautiful pieces.
Enjoyed the sculpture garden (free) before entering the museum (discount for veterans.) I enjoyed viewing the settling of San Antonio through so many perspectives. Definitely worth a visit, especially if horses were a part of your childhood, says this farm girl from Pennsylvania.
I really liked it. It had a lot of interesting things, especially the saddles. Unfortunately, pictures were not allowed.
I walk around this area lots of time never new it was there, which is very sad in my part. It was a great museum, such amazing art, very detailed pieces. And of course just the building it self is a gorgeous place. Tuesday night are free from 4-9pm. If u can, please leave a donation.
This place is very accommodating and has wonderful events and public information from as early as the 1800 through the public library inside. All around great exhibit even for children. With areas for them to explore as well.
Wow, what a great gallery and museum. It has a lovely garden with statues outside where you can get married. Beautiful setting
Visited during spring break. Loved it. Well worth it.
Loved it this place was free I believe on Tuesday's.
Fantastic, place to visit. Exhibits are beautiful the museum is fantastic place
If you're interested in Western Art and history, this is the place to see!
Really nice snapshot of Texas history. Beautiful paintings, sculptures, and artifacts. Where else can you see such a large collection of spurs? (Not the local basketball team, lol) I was very impressed by Pancho Villa's saddle-gorgeous leather tooling and silver work. The video interview with Enrique Guerra is well worth the visit- he brought the Longhorns back to Texas!
Great selection of art including the old photos in museum. Recommend. On Fridays they offer a free tour 1:30pm- wouldn’t support since the walk is not an hour that they mention on site
A small museum with pictures, statues, saddles, swords, spurs. A few videos, nice place to see items from the old west.
This place is really nice , a lot of history. My father enjoyed it so much, both times that I took him.
We found out about thus on one of the riverside boat tours and went back the next day. The welcome was informative and friendly. The western art displays are beautiful and wonderfully arranged, with some magnificent sculptures. The Alamo diorama built on what we had learned visiting there. And the oral history clips were good, particularly memorable was the Chuck Wagon cook. And the new art exhibition was great too.Very highly recommended.
Very friendly staff. The exhibits were incredible! It was a lot of fun to look back into the past at a life very few live. The interactive videos are fun for all ages. The variety of saddles were so cool to see! I would love to see a bit more Native American there to round out the west. The model of the Alamo is pretty intense and very well done.
Awesome Could have stayed all afternoon
Free on Tuesdays and I just happened upon it during a Tuesday night. Breathtaking museum.
Beautiful place... awesome food. Great time!!
Outstanding museum for Western art and artifacts on the Riverwalk. Includes relief map of Battle of the Alamo. $10 admission is great value.
Felt like I was at the Smithsonian and they dont want you to view any exits. Felt unwelcome and I was there to view the wedding venue.
We we're lucky since Tuesday nights were free admission.
Good mix of very western American spurs, guns and oil drilling. Doesn’t say much about the genocide against the prior inhabitants. Very limited collection with an entire room just having the names of all the wealthy elite males of the old past, I didn’t spot one female, although maybe I missed it.
Yes very interesting indeed. If you like westerns great place to visit.
Amazing art work. Lots of historical information about the San Antonio area. Inexpensive entrance fee. Interactive exibits. My entire family enjoyed the experience. Would definitely go again.
Definitely worth the time. Hugely informative and interesting with excellent exhibits and very friendly and informstive staff. Conveniently located right of the riverwalk, and in a sensationally beautiful buikding. Highly recommended
Excellent works of art, very informative. They suggested starting on the third floor and working your way down which was a good idea.
Okayish, nothing spectacular. Went in because we had nothing much to do and free admission that Tuesday evening (open till 9 pm on Tuesdays)
Very nice collection.love that it has saddles and spurs not just paintings
Nice collections and aminal exhibit. Beautiful location by Riverwalk.
Very nice collection of Western Art and artifacts housed in historic building.
Great little museum! We really enjoyed the western artwork and artifacts. Spent ~2 hours, but we were rushing a bit at the end b/c we were hungry. There is also a display of the Alamo on the day of the battle, which was neat as we had just been to the Alamo the day before.
Cute place that preserves the epic feats of American heroes. Very cozy and attractive place, well maintained and clean. It transports the visitor to the past in a well-elaborated thematic sequence.
outside sculpture garden. Great
Place actually closes at 3 on sundays.
The place was so very interesting!!!!! I stayed longer than expected because I was getting so much history. As I walked out of the museum it was a big Wow!! I would love to visit again. I do indeed recommend this museum, which is free on Tuesday after 4pm. They have special exhibits , so it is good to see what's going on with the on the official website, so Enjoy!!!! This is a first class museum. Lovely
Amazing! Free on Tuesdays after 4pm. Great way to see western art and learn a bit about Texas History!
Beautiful building and great content. Lots of western and cowboy type items. Three floors with elevators and a layout that would be very wheelchair accessible.
Great museum. The current exhibit on Animals in Art was really well done and they have some very talented artists showcased. I loved the current saddle collection on the third floor also.
This was a great place to see some awesome western pieces of history. Nice displays, phenomenal bronze pieces, nice gift shop. Check out the census records in the library for fun.
Briscoe Western Art Museum is a must see. Put this place on your bucket list if you're a history buff. Highly recommended
So much beautiful art!! I am so very glad we went there. Works included bronze items that look like marble. Fantastic museum of western art. And there is an entrance to the Riverwalk.
Great musium...learned a lot
This place is beautiful went here for a wedding very well organized
This was one of the highlights of our trip to San Antonio. We had coupons for admission--coupons are available everywhere in tourist guide magazines--so it wasnt costly. A beautiful building with just the right mix of paintings, sculptures and artifacts. There was a huge diorama of the battle at the Alamo. Very enjoyable visit. We highly recommend it.
Not crazy about museums but this one sounded different and we decided to take a pick. Very interesting: Western American Art including our neighbors, The Mexicans: lots of common history, specially in Texas. For this time it also included an exhibition of the Society of Artist Animals SSA
This museum will be a highlight of my San Antonio vacation. Go there on Tuesday evenings from 5pm to 9pm and it is free. There are three floors here of beautiful art and fascinating historical artifacts. Santa Anna's sword was simply incredible to take in. The level of craftsmanship is astounding. The horse saddles throughout are equally impressive. I highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting.
Great art museum. Very nice facility with a great selection of western art. The facility is extensive and has regular special exhibits. Nice place to hang out on a bad weather day, there are plenty of places to take a load off.
The second time was just as good as the first
Cool art and historical lessons made interesting for all.
Free on Tuesday afternoons. Interesting place to see all types of Western art and learn about history. Videos at different exhibits showcase the artist and their process.
The art work is superb.
Fabulous museum! We found out about it from these very online reviews and glad we did. We spent around 3 hours looking at everything had to offer and its beautifully displayed. The cast sculptures in partic-ular are fascinating in their detail. The museum is an easy walk from the River Walk area and its only $10 each to get in. Highly recommended if you are in town.
We were lucky enough to attend during a "free" Tuesday night (4-9) and enjoyed the western-themed art on display. Probably spent a hour here. Clean restrooms.
My son loved the guns. and the alamo display hes a small table encased in glass and interactive The building was once the circus museum
An excellent museum. A nice small museum at a very fair price.
A nice collection of cowboy and native American artwork in a beautiful building overlooking the Riverwalk. Reasonably priced, the collection occupies 3 floors and is beautifully displayed.
If you like Western history and Art don't miss the Briscoe.
Great place if you like western art
