REVIEWS OF Blanton Museum of Art IN Texas

Flor Valdés

So glad to catch the Words/Matter exhibition on its last day. My first time at the Blanton, surely not my last.

alex koncz

Always a great time. Block parties are fun. Thursdays a great. I recommend this place if you have an hour or 2 you don't be disappointed.

Stacie Cooks

Had a wonderful time at Third Thursday! I love that the exhibits changes often here giving a different experience every time I visit!

Zach Turner

They have great events here. Not sure I'd go on any normal day

Paul O'Brien

One of Austin's great experiences; an underappreciated treasure. My family and I stood in the upstairs gallery of the Blanton Museum and heard violin. Descending the stairs, I was struck by this view; representing Austin: live music, community, art, culture, inspiring innovation, and on the wall in the back, "Make Tacos Not War."

Addisu Mekuriaw

First thing, it’s a museum of art where you can find Europe and American art of arts from old to modern. Obviously, clean as it belongs to The University of Texas at Austin. Great staff taking care of bathrooms and areas clean. Also, don’t forget to visit the next building called BMK, where you enjoy color of light on the floor with a magic like combination....

RDC

Building is perfect for a world class art collection. However, the collection did not impress.

Johanny Reyes

I would not be able to describe into words just how amazing this museum was. I didn’t want to leave! There were live performances scheduled throughout the museum the entire afternoon... and it was a Sunday. I was only visiting Austin for a short week and I’m happy I made it to the Blanton Museum of Art. Amazing pieces and amazing performances. Interesting inclusion of the space available and way to draw people to see different parts of the museum in a different light then normally displayed. BRAVO

Charlie Sussman

The Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design is an engaging and stimulating exhibit that showcases contemporary African designers, artists and video artists. I especially enjoyed the fashion and video aspects of this exhibit.

Dameon Rogers

Cute, lots of modern and ancient art.

Josh VanderLeest

The staff/docents went beyond expectations — shared valuable knowledge and facts. Incredibly welcoming, but not pushy or always saying “stand back, etc.” Loved, loved the environment, audience and art found here. Plan to spend several hours here — ask questions, take photos, reflect and go through it slowly.

Andrew Cushen

I so enjoyed my visit to this museum last week. The art rocked, I was so surprised to find this museum in the middle of campus. Just blown away by the breadth and Ellsworth Kelly?? A delight! The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The layout was welcoming too—genuinely delighted by the blue tile in the big hall.

Sam Pattnaik

This museum is amazing! One of the must visit places in Austin if you love art and museums in general. I wouldn't say the collection is exhaustive but definitely enough that you can cover in a few hours ranging from contemporary to modern. Some local artist and some legends in it's permanent and timed art collections. Cameras are allowed without flash so remember to get them along. Very well maintained and you can see the occasional school kids and UT student classes here. This is part of the UT system and Thursdays are free to enter. You can park in the Broncos garage nearby and get the ticket validated for the day for just $5. Great for groups as well and solo and it has something for everyone. If you are on UT campus, this is definitely a must visit.

Lidia Zawisza

Beautiful artifacts from all over the world! Looks small from the outside but reserve at least 3 hours to see everything because it’s well worth it. Don’t skip the Ellsworth Kelly chapel (keep your tickets) and see it at different times of the day, truly beautiful! The museum is free on Thursdays

Joshua Rangel

Even though I wasn't able to enjoy every piece of art work, I still enjoyed the tour. Will return on my own!

Nathan Cunningham

Overall good experience. I found the latest exhibit to be underwhelming but had a pleasant time with the wifey.

Colette Montminy

A pretty nice spot to check out, especially if you're a student here. There's a lot of cool exhibits and it makes for a nice and calm break. If you go into the smaller building, walk around for a bit and then make sure to ask someone there about the story of the art.

Clare Crowe

The Blanton is a place I have been wanting to visit for a long time and it did not disappoint. The museum's exhibit rooms are large and airy and the displays are varied and orderly. Compared to other world museums it is small, but I'm sure that changes as time goes by and new objects and exhibitions are acquired. The separate cafeteria is very, very nice and popular. The personnel friendly and knowlegeable.

marwan khaleel

This is one of the few best museums I’ve been worldwide.... very diverse art

Charlie

Small but well maintained museum. Many unique pieces in modern and contemporary art. Last time I visited a museum (MOMA in Houston) was before the kids came along. It was different this time having to monitor the kids while they roamed the different sections of the exhibit halls. We had just completed the Bullock TX State History Museum across the street so naturally this was next on the itinerary. Helpful docents, kid-friendly quiet but not stuffy environment. We caught glimpse of a bridal photo shoot in front which attests to the beauty of the building and landscape.

Nicholas Thompson

It was free on Thursdays!!! The permanent exhibits were more faccinating to me than the main attraction on the main floor but I hope to check it out again with a different artist displayed next time!

Raven Cortright

Really great art museum Free for faculty and students. Great place to escape the heat and enjoy some art

kelley chance

There was a great selection of Latin art when we visited the other day during their free Thursday hours. It's a beautiful walk through all the exhibits and for the most part you can walk around without having to backtrack and miss anything.

Mike Steczo

Highly enjoyable. The museum was easy to navigate and has a wonderful selection of art from varied periods. Daytime on the Wednesday I attended was not particularly packed.

Mark Springer

Hidden gem on the University of Texas campus, fabulous collection of rare artifacts from antiquity to spellbinding and esoteric modern art. Come early as hours are short each day. Ample parking in the garage across the street.

Cameron Christie

I was really surprised at the quality of this museum. I'm now embarrassed that I hadn't heard of it before moving to Austin and going with a class. Everyone who lives here should visit! Their European and Latin American collections are beautiful.

Pearl Sindhuchatra

The exhibits were pretty cool and the staff were very informative. Got to work on a loom project for a potential new installment to the museum!

D v d W n n

Waaaaayyy better than the contemporary. Great selection, better prices.

Gregory Sanchez

Very impressive works of art!

Melissa Shank

One of my favorite places to visit once a month. The block party was also fun

Tina Steiner

Such beautiful artistry in many different rooms. We saw words matter where I plan to use the paintings that I've seen and some of the works of art in a lesson plan when I return to campus. I love that it showed alphabets and poetry and portraits and words of wisdom. I love that it was political and romantic. So many powerful works of art under 1 roof. It was amazing.

Michael Wright

Really peaceful place to go with benches to sit and see the amazing paintings

William Houser

An absolutely lovely experience! A perfect size; you can easily walk through the whole place in a little over an hour. Hundreds of works spanning from classic European, to modern day contemporary art, it has something for everyone!

caroline o'neal

Great museum for a date, only $5 for students with an ID. They change their exhibits frequently enough for locals to visit multiple times and see all new things. Loved it.

Mary Ann Reddin

So many beautiful pieces of art from the old masters to modern day!

Amina Bektache

Breathtaking art work from different ages. Thursday is for free.. Guides are volunteers and they are so friendly and helpful

Isaac Holloway

It was a very fascinating experience! A lot of beautiful artwork made centuries ago. Ranging from Christian art, Ancient Greek and Roman art and Texas art! Definitely worth your time.

Rob Taylor

Easy to enjoy for an hour or two, or make a day of it! Thoughtfully curated and courteously staffed, Blanton Museum offers both calming and provocative pieces.

Alejandro Puig

One of the best museum ever visited. Impressive and emotional.

Lewis Erick

You can come here a lot of times with friends and still not be bored. The collection is good, and I'm impressed that my favorite section, modern art has a great selection as well as a considerable amount of Mexican art.

drea drea

Beautiful place. Great experience! I would love to see more art here not sure how often the display changes.

John

Really fun! So many styles of art, something for everyone to enjoy. Prices are reasonable as well, and you get a discount if you bring a school ID.

Elizabeth Hewitt

A great place to see works out of an art textbook as well as modern pieces. The recent African display of contemporary artists was fantastic.

Amy New

Very nice art contemporary and american art collection. A striking quantity of thought provoking, contemplative contemporary pieces. Loved it so much I went back the next day to drink it in some more because the first time they closed early.

Tammie Garcia

I like it was very educating we went with a group of coworkers. We really enjoyed it especially the penny room.

Maribel Hambric

Love visiting this museum when I'm in town. This time took my two sons with a friend on a Follow the Leader tour. What a wonderful, interactive experience. Must take it again. Love free museum day on Thursdays.

V Hernandez

Very nice museum. They have rotating exhibts you should see. Thursdays are free entrance days.

Chris Boyd

Beautiful building and exhibits. Very cool inside to beat the Austin heat. Leave yourself 1.5 to 2 hours to visit. Park across the street for 10 bucks.

Indradeep Biswas

A very cool art museum in the UT Austin campus. Admissions are free on Thursdays. Two stores is 3 galleries, and some very interesting exhibits are on. It's great to see are students hanging out and making sketches of exhibit items.

Jessica McKamie

This was a lovely museum. The artwork was well organized, the building was clean, and the experience was all-around great. I especially appreciate that teachers get in free!

Jack Gilbert

We have been to the Blanton museum several times and we always enjoy it.

Kerry Bradley

A wonderful art gallery. On the day of my visit there was a composer sharing his creative process and playing some of his music in the foyer. While I reflected on the Latin American art and language exhibit I heard the sounds of this beautiful music. That was very special. The main galleries are upstairs and were divided into historic European and modern American exhibits. I first went to the American exhibit and in retrospect should have visited the European exhibit first, the transition from political and modern pieces to classical and religious pieces was jarring. You could easily spend over two hours here but if you get overwhelmed by volume you may want to focus one exhibit and return again if time permits. Thursday is free admission (awesome) and there are many other pricing options available. The gift shop had a great selection of items for purchase covering a wide range of price points and while I did not visit the cafe it was clearly popular with numerous folks enjoying the food. I cannot comment on parking but can say that accessing the museum by public transportation was easy. The website is informative and up to date so use that as a planning guide.

Tomas Young

Let your mind wonder here. Look at the images and try to think of a title before you actually read the title. Probably the most fun thing to do!:)

Sher S

Grand entrance with amazing staff that are knowledgeable about the exhibits and are delighted to describe them in full to you! Whether a self-guided tour or a tour with a guide, it's a great experience for all ages.

Juana Acosta

Went to visit and had a great time. Gift shop has jewelry coming from artists, using fair-trade gold and different crystals. Beautiful art coming from different artists old and new all over the world.

Jessica Van Dyke

What a great museum!! Lots of great artwork in the main museum but then you go outside. Ellsworth Kelly’s “Austin” is a beautiful structure with a rainbow of windows that create beautiful designs in the room. Make sure to go at different times of the day for a completely different experience!

Clandestine Events & Experiences

Loved it. I brought my 12 year old daughter here with me and it was just perfect. A terrific mix of art that captivated us both. Each section was unique, well thought out, and breathtaking. What a great spot to visit again and again. Locals!! Keep in mind admission is free all day on Thursdays. Also, the museum gift shop is a terrific spot for reasonably priced, locally made artifacts.

Eric Pan

Great museum with a mix of types and range of art without being overwhelmingly large. You can enjoy the museum in one to two hours. The building itself and the interior have some lovely lounges and seating areas and nice designs. The first floor has some neat and now rare plaster mold replicas of some sculptures. Anything the size of a backpack or larger needs to go into a locker but they’re super nice and let you borrow a quarter to operate them then expect you to put the quarter back in the cup at the front desk when you’re done. Before you leave, check out Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin nearby.

Cyrus Baty

The museum is very considerate for giving veterans and military an admission discount. It was very much appreciated! There is a nice selection of classical and modern .I find it intresting they have a building that is attraction. The museum had great exhibitions going on and we enjoyed seeing them. We drove from Katy Texas for one specific one, Paper Vault. Albrecht Durer's works did not disappoint! It was amazing to see them in person.

Elysa Henderson

The last time I went to an Austin museum or educational attraction was well over 10 years ago. Comparing those trips to past experiences in national museums and zoos, I did not have high expectations for this trip to Blanton. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the the amount of pieces and how much I enjoyed my visit overall. I am not what you would call a museum rat or someone who feels the need to slowly savor each piece of work. I go through quickly and only stop if a piece catches my eye. Still, I was able to spend an hour and fourty-five minutes and not be bored. I even have plans to go again once the new temp exhibit opens in Mid-October. Definitely would recommend going on Thursdays since it is free admission day.

Jenn Carney

It's always free on Thursdays. The exhibits on the main floor rotate regularly. Staff are friendly and the parking is close. I reccomend visiting.

Hector T

Just beautiful. The best time to visit it is when is sunny outside so you can see the colors inside.

Russel McDonald

Amazing. Enjoyed it. Now tired of standing.

Michelle Eaton

Always changing. Love the classics

Yadira Diaz

Stopped by before we left and I loved it so much. Wish there was more art and selections at the gift store. Overall it’s great and there are so many beautiful art pieces. Parking is free and right next to the museum. Ticket prices a very affordable. can’t wait to come again.

Chips and Queso

Soooooo much to look at here! Everything thing from Contemporary to Latin American to European art! You can walk right up the the art and take it all in. Prices were reasonable too! Definitely check this place out!

Ariana Billett

I have always loved visiting this place.

Yesica Armijo

Really nice art, it's a small museum but it was definitely worth the drive. Nice staff as well.

Mz. Dee Watkins

Visited this museum with Granddaughter for the start of her class project. It was a great history lesson. And she even found it much more interesting than she expected. Looking forward returning for the completion of her project.

Anand Prasad Kruttiventi

Went to a wonderful Carnatic music violin concert by two of Lalgudi Jayaraman's progeny - maestros themselves. Blanton auditorium was superb.

Stella Gomez

I’m an artist so coming here was great! I like how it was small so I can go through the exhibits easily and not get lost. I also really liked the simplicity of the outside exhibit!!

Randall McKee

Open late and Free on Thursdays. Discounted parking in UT garage with ticket validated by museum staff. Good tea, coffee, soft drinks, wine, etc. and light food at Cafe next to museum gift shop.

RandomTallGuy

Good displays, especially poignant Latin American art selections. The price is agreeable as well.

Gareth Morgan

Great place and really good price to get in. Students of UT Austin are free and everyone is free on Thursdays.

Contrarian Libertarian

When I visited they had a great selection on display of South and North American tribal through colonial and even some more contemporary pieces. All organized by date. I would be glad to go see another exhibit.

Richard Gilbertson

The Blanton Museum of Art is a masterpiece in itself. The museum is comprised of so many beautiful exhibits and artifacts. The place is really good option to visit with family..I went here with my family and the children in our family were very happy with this place. They enjoyed themselves and got to learn so much. The kids were so happy that they keep on asking about our next visit. This is a wonderful place.

Markette Griffin

I really enjoyed myself and learned about different things. What a great place to visit.

Isabela Huin

Excellent collection of classic and modern art.

gumbogatsby

The Blanton is small but mighty. The latest temporary exhibit "Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design" drew out a diverse intersect of the Austin community --- people of different physical abilities, races, and ages. The layout of the exhibit created a nice flow, with space to stop and read or appreciate each piece. Finally, the gift shop offered lovely pieces from a Ghanian women's collective, making it easy to give back.

Jim Roberts

Beautiful structure and the art displays are updated frequently with new pieces. My wife and I definitely recommend this treasure.

Joesph Fountain

Beautiful museum with a nice selection of latin american and American modern art as well as european art from 1600-1800. . It is a small museum that you can cover in two hours. Personnel is very attentive and professional. Highly recommended.

574657

Pretty cool place to check out while on campus. Student discount is nice and parking is good.

Eliza Welsh

This is a wonderful museum, with a nice selection of modern and Latin American art. I happened to visit while the museum was displaying a medieval monsters exhibit, and another of self-help prints from Latinx artists. I enjoyed them both immensely. Be sure to head over to the “Austin” building, designed by Ellsworth Kelly. I do wish the gift shop had a larger variety of prints, but perhaps they are not available.

Blake Holman

Really great museum! Plus, it's free for students

Dezzy

What a fantastic place. There is so much great art and the background behind each piece is so interesting. I loved going there.

Roy Hammonds

Do you like art? Do you like history? Go support your museum.

Dean Drake

Really enjoyed our first visit to Words Matter and the block party March 29. Fun bands....good food!

amber johnson

It was cool, great art and they support military. Don't get too close to the art work or they'll "scold" you for being too close. Additionally, if you look like you'll be disruptive, security follows you around. There are sensors at the bottom and if you try to get a better look, they tall you to back up. I get it, but be nicer about it. People don't appreciate being "yelled" at. Thanks!

Doug Bright

Probably the best college art museum I've seen. The vibe on Third Thursday was fun - very busy with lots going on. My only regret was not seeing the Kelly during the day.

Can You See

Pretty nice museum, on UTs campus... Kinda stale though. Needs livelier staff that's kid friendly.

Matt Irvin

The permanent collection here is the best in Austin (says this layman)! From the classics to modern weirdness all in a really nice setting. Downstairs are special exhibitions that are usually pretty interesting. Third Thursday of each month they stay open late, have free admission and usually some sort of performance. Highly recommended!

Rafael Rangel

This place is awesome. Very nice and beautiful. The best deal in town on every third thursday of the month. Recommend it for sure.

Anish S

I really enjoyed going to this art museum. I'm not really a lover of art myself so it helps if you go with someone that appreciates and understands art. This allows more meaning to be brought into everything you see. Additionally, each painting has a short summary of what it is about which can help you understand what is going on.

Kristin Crawford

Permanent collection, especially the modern art is very interesting. The temporary exhibit by Jeffrey Gibson...mind blown!! See it before it leaves

Zachary Vasseur

Now this is a very cool picture place. A lot of different genres and culture’s art are put in here. This place is a VERY COOL place to get lost in.

Lee McClendon

A great mixture of art. I enjoyed walking around and seeing all the classic artist works.

Jason Willingham

Intriguing, drifting off into another person's perspective! Great place to get lost! AustinVrlab

Bruce Boyes

Jeffrey Gibson, of the Choctaw tribe has a really wonderful exhibit here

Luke Pharr

Really nice collection of modern American painting and older European painting. The rotating exhibitions are hit or miss. The interior is beautiful, and they seem very committed to constantly improving the museum. Nothing else like it in the Austin area.

Lyle Wilder

Only a few more days! Copies, Fakes, & Reproductions is a well-planned exhibit I highly recommend. Holly made it even more interesting by giving our group insight as to the many purposes of art reproductions. Fascinating! Thank you, Blanton Museum.

Amanda Wilson

This art museum on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin is well put together and architecturally interesting. The collection includes more than 300 modern and contemporary American paintings from Mari and James A. Michener, but the European collection from the Suida-Manning family really shines. In an adjacent building is a nice gift shop and comfy cafe offering a selection of sandwichesand salads. Military vets and active duty are admitted free. Discounts for seniors. The newest addition is an Ellsworth Kelly designed contemplative space often filled with noisy school children on tours.

tom columbus

The museum was great and very clean

katie Rains

I don't know, I suppose I was expecting a bit more. Interesting works but overall quite a small museum, mostly contemporary works. Still worth visiting as an art fan in Austin as its the best of what is available but managed to do a thorough visit in about an hour and a half time.

Cecilia Alejandra

We loved this museum! Its rather small but a very nice trip with a very peaceful ambiance. Loved the exhibits and would definitely love to come back! It was a great experience and the staff was super friendly and helpful! Would recommend this to anyone spending a weekend in Austin and looking for something more cultural to do before heading to the downtown bars!

Chris Owens

Nice museum and Austin by Ellsworth Kelly is beautiful. Wonderful gift shop!

Sonya Garza

Small nice museum. Parking garage 5 minute walk.

Tom Descano

A lovely "boutique" art museum with some beautiful works, paintings & sculptures. I enjoyed the Latin American, early Renaissance, European portraits & contemporary collections, as well as the ancient Greek & Italian pottery pieces. A couple favorites: El Anatsui's "Seepage", Bierstadt's "Indian Canoe" & Procaccini's "Visitation". However, I'm sorry to say I was a little disappointed in the US Western Art collection. I felt it was a bit lacking. And the European collection is devoid of any impressionist works.

Gina Amesbury

I can appreciate the art but it wasn't my thing.

Elizabeth DeZouche

Plenty to see and do at the museum. The friendly staff will give you a quarter to stow your stuff in a locker. Ellsworth Kelly's Austin (The small building to the side of the museum with the rainbow squares) is a must-see from the inside!

Valentina Canales

Unique works of art that you can only see here, must see

Joshua Rutherford

I love wandering around this space. One of the marks of a good museum is the ability to lose yourself in the exhibits. This one offers just that kind of atmosphere. Their variety of artwork is decent, not overwhelming, and their staff are always friendly. Bonus points for their Free Thursdays too, which offer my family and I the opportunity to visit without breaking our (tiny) bank.

Austin Hillis

Good for university, but could be a lot better.

Rosa Melgoza

Really enjoyed this museum. I especially loved the Words/Matter exhibit, which included a lot of art work by Latin American artists.

Austin Moon

Loved it! The exhibits were amazing and the staff were friendly. Five stars!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gerald Kurten

Nice diversity of art. Large and comfortable space. The music by the AGMC was superb. I'll be back.

Chris Webb

Great collection. Stunning entryway. Fine examples of Central and South American Art. It’s free on Thursdays!

K Nguyen

Lovely place. There may not be many galleries/exhibits but for what's available, it was quite nice. Highly recommend coming on a 3rd Thursday of the month where additional features are available (heard a musical performance in the foyer that was simply the best). Even if you don't consider yourself an art aficionado, simply wandering around Blanton will leave you at peace with the museum's open and refreshing vibe.

Ikarus has Fallen

Wonderful museum. The art was astounding and the vibe was surreal. The museum is spacious and organized in a way that is fluid. Would definitely recommend to others.
