A great selection of inspiring art. It's free admission, but if you go please try to bring cash donations to support this gem.
Great art and history ❣️
Admission is free until you arrive. Then it's $10 at the door. No sign, no apology. No correction to their automated message saying admission is free for groups under 10. How do I know the "admission fee of $10" is not a scam? No adult in charge to clarify this with. We drove 60 miles round trip to enjoy this Museum. #disappointment
We learned some very interesting history regarding Thomas Jefferson relationship with Sally Hemmings. Never she was 14 yrs old and he was in his 40's when he got her pregnant. Smh
Wonderful Kinsey exhibition. Beautiful art, sad history.
Awesome place. Everyone should bring their family and friends to learn a piece of heritage of African American culture.
It wasn't what I expected. The artwork in the first floor room was not very well-done in my opinion. Upstairs featured a huge room, with what looked like POSTERS of African American actresses, singers, poets etc of decades ago. I was hoping to learn something new about our culture or see some interesting artifacts. Saw nothing. Hate I drove 80 minutes, round trip to come here. At least it was free admission and free parking...
Very exquisite, very professional and informative. This facility provides so much for everyone to participate in, regardless of age.
Great nite! Celebrating birthday
I can't wait to take my son here when he's old enough to understand.
Loved it very educational and emotional. This Country has a soiled past toward People of Color Dallas is no different
Simply amazing place!!!! Didn't know this place existed. Left this place feeling very proud and sad at the same moment. Will become a member!!!!
First off, this is a great building, beautiful both inside and out, and the layout is effective for creating individual galleries each with their own experience. We visited for about two and half hours on a Saturday afternoon and still did not see everything. We spent a long time in the gallery of folk art on the first floor, which, although specifically about African American folk art in Texas, is one of the best collections of folk art I've seen anywhere: fascinating and beautiful pieces by inspired artists in a variety of media. We also explored the African American art gallery: pieces varied in quality but were always interesting and generally well-displayed. And the current exhibit of work by Jonas Boekhoudt ("Metropolis") which was engaging -- though sometimes glare from the overhead lights prevented us from seeing the canvases as wholes. We will be going back to see the other exhibits, one on Freedman's cemetery and one on Sepia magazine. I was expecting (hoping) that there would be at least one area offering a view of the history of African Americans in the Dallas area. As a new part-time resident, I'm trying to get a handle on the city's people, culture, and history. I almost docked the Museum one star for not providing this, but I guess it's not fair to penalize them for not doing something that they don't claim to do. Still, I wish there was someplace that looked intensively at African American history and culture in Dallas.
They closed pretty early for a Saturday (5pm) I was disappointed due to the fact I was visiting from out of town and only was in town for a few days. There website said free entry but it was not. My friend and I ended up paying $10 dollars each for admission. Good exhibits though learned alot of history.
Beautiful museum. The tall gentleman that gives the history of the museum is an asset as a Volunteer. He encourages others to volunteer. The young staff at the front desk had good customer service skills. The other assumed volunteers in the gift store need assistance. Wasnt clear on membership privileges. Please order more calendars, book markers and paper dolls via Michelle Obama. I will return in the weeks to come. Thank you.
Even though I came on a day when some of the galleries were closed to prepare for new exhibits, there were many spaces to enjoy. The folk art exhibition featured many artists from Dallas, as well as furniture from North Carolinian furniture maker Thomas Day. The exhibition about African Americans in Dallas is a must see. I purchased a book in the shop and had a great conversation with the bookstore manager.
Hubby and I came here for the first time and typically they stated that it is free to explore and you can make a donation but they had a featured collection, The Kinseys, on display, I believe until sometime in November. I'm glad we were able to see the collection to see some of the collected pieces from the 1500s and learned a lot of history and art. I would recommend coming here and learning some history, it was great!
It's use of space is great, & I loved the exhibit that currently there. I'll always go back.
It was quite the experience with my family to learn about the local history of African Americans to the Dallas community, and otherwise. I loved it.
Didn't even realize that this museum was here. Glad my husband and I could enjoy it together.
Definitely worth the stop to see history.
Terrible. There was no Jesse Washington exhibit, never coming back.
Awesome museum with great historical displays and many relevant events
Beautiful and informative collection of Dallas civil rights antiquity!!!
I really enjoyed viewing the displays and learning new info
Amazing store..carvings, masks, calendars, cloths, books, classes, jewelry & etc.. AMAZING
Loved it cant wait to go back
I love this place, so much history to experience.
We had a great experience during the TX/OU game
Always learn something new here. The hospitality of the staff was pleasant. This time we ran into the Executive Director Harry Robinson Phd. His knowledge discussion was very informative. His Historic knowledge shines through.
Beautiful museum , so much information. And the staff are very informative.
It has a lot of very interesting black history, objects, pictures etc.
Very interesting, a lot to learn about the Aftican-American experience.
Very enlightening experience
Best African American museum I've ever been to
Great displays and knowledgeable tour guides. A must see. 4 halls with different displays.
Very informative but I expected more artifacts and interactive media
Great place to visit
Awesome experience!
Very good history in this place
Beautiful place of history. If you're in Dallas please check them out!♥️
Nice little museum with rich information.
I really do enjoy events here but I'd like to see more. As diverse as the Metroplex is I expect more.
The workshop was absolutely great. First visit to museum it's self. It was beautiful.
Great event hosted by S.L.A.P.
Great to have non-bias knowledge and pure display of original cultural significance of a great people. Please continue to remove our ignorance.
Very nice place to visit and learn.
I SIMPLY LOVE THIS PLACE OF BLACK HERITAGE ART!!! THIS PLACE IS A BLESSING TO ALL WHOM MAY EXPERIENCE!
You learn about people that you may not know about. Educational
African American museum. Reaching out to the youth (gangs)
It was a fantastic visit at the museum.
Historic and creatively inspiring and satisfying. A must-see for all Americans but especially for African descendents of the diaspora!
Great little museum having a cultural impact on Dallas
Great place to visit. Lot of information about History
The exhibition of the artifacts from Monticello were stunning
Thanks for hosting your council member
Definitely a place to bring your family for self education and knowledge of one's self
The Museum has four exhibit galleries, one has a wonderful permanent exhibit on early Dallas history, with artifacts from Freedman's cemetery and early African American residents. The other galleries house traveling exhibits and this month local painter Riley Holloway has a great show.
Lots of history here. Good place to learn about Black History. Stop by, worth your time.
It's a free place. Loved the displays and art.
Neat place but the Womens bathrooms are horrible, awfully small stalls & have a terribly disgusting stench or smell. They need to correct this issue ASAP
Great self guided tour!
Great place to visit when in Dallas
So many great pieces of art, books, and clothing.
Everyone should go see the new exhibit! I learned so much from it.
I went to see the Monticello display. It was numbing and interesting. The stories reminded me of elementary school library. It was worth the time. Furniture making was serious during those times. Last day to see is the 21st, Monday.
The experience was nice. An interesting walk around. The staff at the entrance was helpful. The facility was very clean. My children had an awesome experience. I just wish that the gift shop had a bigger variety of items to buy.
Very interesting
Outstanding collection. Knowledgeable staff. Good location.
Awsome! Worth stopping in to tour. Not a lot of exhibits but I spent a good hour an 15mins up and downstairs. Friendly staff. No charge but taking donations.
Go see and experience for yourself I gurantee you won't be disappointed...
Learned a lot about American History and how to be healthy.
The museum has a wonderful collection of art. There is also a bookstore with an assortment of items that are reasonably priced. It is a family-friendly museum.
Disappointed. African American history has so much vibrancy in it's history, art, and culture. This place could be so much more!
The museum is a beautiful facility for hosting any type of event. We love this place immensely! And not to mention the artwork and exhibits...simply breathtaking!!!
I loved it I spent hour there
Wonderful knowledge
Love this place!
Its a very lovely place to visit. As it is the only African American Museum in the heart of the South Dallas area.
Attended a graduation party at the venue and it was very nice except for the kitchen and restrooms. This build has undergone renovations over the years but the kitchen and restrooms have not been touched. If you intend to rent the venue for your event please look the kitchen and restrooms over first. We had to clean the kitchen before we could even start prepping the food yet they required that we clean the kitchen before leaving. In all honesty the kitchen was cleaner when we left than when we got there.
Very informational....artifacts well displayed...forms of art impressive
Wow! Such an eye opening experience!
Very interesting and learning experience.
The exhibit is the perfect mix of art, literature and documents. As a descendant of a slave owned by the Mcconnell lineage, it was humbling to see the documents, letters and ledgers. Followed by an uplifting journey from reconstruction to renaissance. The artwork is very inspirational, cleansing the palate. The exhibit on Freeman Cemetery was exceptional. The video kiosks weren't just narrations but actual interviews from local people who knew it as "hallowed ground". I am very grateful for that opportunity and look forward to returning with my family.
Excellent showing!!
The museum is huge. I only got through a very small portion of it; the music section. It was really neat to look at the videos, exhibits and read about old and new performers. There are 4 floors broken up by African American slavery, Civil Rights Movement, the museum store, sports and the top floor explores music. I would estimate it takes a solid 4-5 hours to see everything. The museum is open from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. every day of the year except for Christmas Day, December 25. Admissions is free although you will need to print out a ticket. An eye opening and educational experience.
We went for an Extravaganza event. Had a number of Christian rappers in an effort to bring hope back to the local communities. Was amazed at the local talent and had the privilege of looking at some of the heritage displayed at the museum. Had a great time and thankful being accepted with open arms.
I went to Dallas on my vacation. I visited the African American Museum. It was very interesting informative and had lots of pictures and artifacts. I would suggest anyone who goes to Dallas to visit the African American Museum.
I just went today for the Southwest Black Art show and I loved it! Its really stepped up on the exhibits and i adore the new changes. Definitely worth a new visit if like me you had not been in a while
Awesome exhibit by 20 African American Women!
Loved our tour and our tour guide was very nice. I wish I remembered the young guys name. He took his time to explain each section and answer questions. We plan to go back and spend more time on the our own and just take it all in.
A very historic place of African American history. From quilts to books to paintings to the stories about the history behind Juneteenth and cementary it's a place to learn about African American culture and appreciate the continuous sacrifices and contributions of great African American public figures. I will definitely be back visiting this museum along with my family for a long time.
I thoroughly enjoyed the African American Museum. Great displays with a lot of historical moments.
Courteous staff, many events
Clean very informative nice setting
Went to see the play, Those Christian over There! It was great.
I found this to be a very educational and emotional museum. Great information
Great place to learn history and see great local and national artists.
Amazing!
Beautiful place for a wedding!
It was a nice place and there were some cool artifacts. However, I expected more and wanted to see more. There was a lack of statues, artwork by non local artists, and history of African American culture, etc. It was nice but I think more is needed.
Very nice and intuitive
First i visited this place with my friend. Where both of us invited. This place is really huge. I only saw a few section.
An amazing look into local black history
An awesome display of American History. A must see when you are in Dallas
I try to go at least once a year and there's always something amazing to witness. Today i had the pleasure of attending the #ustoo Phenomenal Women Artists Talk which was phenomenal to say the least. The exhibit was so inspiring. We will definitely be going back.
Very informative staff and rich exhibits.
Beautiful African Art Work, open every day in fairpark
Awesome historical exhibition
Great Place to visit and have special events.
Definitely worth checking out if you are in the Dallas area!
I was here for a baby shower. It was beautiful and I will certainly come back.
This was a great place to get your history. Enjoyed it.
From the "Buger Connoisseur" - Hamburgars are fresh, but needs more flavor. I had to dip my burger in ketchup. But all in all it was pleasantly filling.
I have went here several times without my child and I have enjoyed learning about my history. I do plan to take my child when they are old enough to understand.
You can learn so much there
Great venue! Love the exhibits
Currently, the museum has a special exhibit on Monticello, addressing Thomas Jefferson and his slaves and how his ideas that all men should be free never were realized in his own home & farm and business. You will learn about Sally Hemmings, her descendants, and the oral history carried down from free and enslaved people, the difficult choices faced by both, and their courage in adversity. You'll be challenged to think about what you might have done in this times. The museum also has long-standing exhibits of African-American art and the history of African-Americans in Texas and the Dallas area.
Such a beautiful museum! It’s filled with lots of local black history and artists which was amazing to see. Definitely worth checking out!
What we were able to see was quite interesting!
It was a so so experience. Most of it was spent reading instead of actually seeing artifacts. I assume this to be because there aren't very many African American artifacts left.
Some really nice works, i wish the exhibits were bigger
It's give great in site into where we as a people came from
Great displays and information regarding African-American history
The security guy or the guy who work there is rude
I was here for an event and it was nice
A lot of rare history and facts about Dallas! The art was fantastic
Myself, My Husband, Our Son and Daughter went to the African American Museum and it was an Amazing Beautiful Experience! It was Peaceful and a Joy to be able to See the Wonderfulness of Our People!
Very cool no matter your ethnic claim its nice to be able to respect the woes of others in lifes struggles
Great historical presentations. Educational. Wonderful building.
Such a wonderful place. They have fascinating and amazing artists displayed here
Beautiful and an amazing educational experience learning about the beautiful state of Texas and about African-American history! Our history!
Good pics and artifacts, but need more.
Beautiful experience that I think every Texan should have.
Great place to visit. The staff are genuinely good people. They have they've tons of information concerning the African American experience.
Always a great place to visit....beautiful
Wonderful experience
The museum is beautiful, and has a lot of informative information there. I went there to see the Sally Hemmings exhibit. It was very well put together, and I was fortunate enough to be with a group that had an actual tour guide. I enjoyed the tour guide experience, but the exhibit is so well put together that you can view it all without a tour guide. There are so many stories regarding Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings, and I was pleased to be able to go and learn what is considered truthful, vs what has been blown out of proportion!
Awesome place. Exhibits were informative, visually appealing, and moving. Even the architecture of the building had meaning. Loved it
Free admit during fair
I loved the experience here. it was beautiful. all the art was perfect. the host was very warm. I felt proud to be black there.
Fun and educational!
Fascinating artwork in 3-4 different exhibits, rich culture and history surrounds in this museum. The curators were very friendly and informative about the museums history and what was to be found inside.
Very nice atmosphere and scenery.
Beautiful! We went to support Stacie Monday's Art. We happened upon an informative lecture downstairs. Stacie's Art and all of the Artists were absolutely amazing.
African American Museum....I expected it to be geared more to African American culture and it was not. It was more local artists painting on black people. A few areas (10%) had stuff geared to the title African American. I am just glad they didn't charge because it would have been a waste of money.
I learned some interesting things about Abraham Lincoln going to this museum. I didn't know he had 3 or 4 kids by one of slave woman on his plantation.
Great place to go for our black history
I love this place
Emotionally moving and authenticly rustic and beautiful all at once..I really enjoyed learning in more depth the life of Thomas Jefferson and others. The staff were so sweet and welcoming.I travelled from Australia and this on the list of places to go..Im so glad I went.
Great place to take the family, learning environment.Staffs are very friendly as well as helpful.
Very informative. Many helpful and knowledgeable volunteers to add background and stories to the displays.

Extremely detailed with many personal narratives and artifacts.

An amazing place to witness history and explore art
