Here you will see all the information of real people like you who purchased the services and products of The Calhoun Mansion (Museum) in the area close to South Carolina.
As of day this firm gets a score of 4.3 over 5 and this score is based on 462 reviews.
You may have noticed that the average score it has is quite positive, and it is based on a large number of scores, so we may think that the assessment is very credible. If there are many people who bothered to leave their opinion when they've done well with the service, it works.
As you know, we do not usually stop to give scores when these are good and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or incidence...
This Museum belongs to the category of Historical place museum.
I found the mansion depressing. It was so full of unrelated pieces that u could not appreciate the home or the era. It is a house full of unrelated curiosities. The tour was minimal
Very interesting to see all the antique items.
As a tour guide myself in Savannah, I constantly promote this house to my customers along with family and friends. Its just got an amazing story, is beyond beautiful and love that its more than a peek into a private home. The guides do excellent tours here! Don't forget to tip!
Lot of interesting rooms and furniture. Good tour.
We loved our visit to The Calhoun Mansion. The collection housed there is truly amazing; we had no idea what we were walking in to! Our guide, Kelsey, was knowledgeable and very personable. We arrived late in the HOT afternoon and were the only ones in our tour group. The house has some remarkable features. We hope to return again and see what pieces have been added!
Very eclectic art collection in a large Charleston historical mansion, lots of treasures from around the world packed into a variety of highly luxurious and decorated historical rooms. The Owner lives in the upper third level (private). I enjoyed the 60 minutes guided tour and the gardens. Interesting to see the home of wealthy art collectors... old times and nowdays.
Interesting and educational.
Awesome historical house
Wonderful museum - gorgeous building filled with masterpieces. We met the owner out to walk his whippets as we were leaving. Very kind, gracious and welcoming. Our tour guide was extraordinary in her knowledge of the building and contents. Well worth every penney of admission.
Great collection of antiques. Interesting history. Our docent was very knowledgeable.
Well worth the price, a thorough and well done tour. Phenomenal pieces of artwork and history that continue to amaze even more with every room.
Beautiful and divine place to visit! The tour guides give healthy amounts of information, and the owner provides antique pieces that you will never see any place else. Best tour that we did on our whole trip!
Just left very informed and happy! Wonderful structure full of the current families costly antique collections from across the world! The man giving the tour was patient, funny, and encouraged questions. The bad reviews must be people who cannot appreciate the arts of that home. Tour is $16 a person and worth every penny!
Tour guide was really good. Talked with knowledge about the place.
This is a great museum. We took the grand tour and it was well worth the time and very entertaining. The house is remarkably preserved--with original woodwork and beautiful, priceless, original, gasolier chandelier light fixtures. While the house is great, the massive collection of gilded-age decorative arts inside the mansion is even better. This has to be the finest collection of gilded-age antiques in North America. And I've been to many places; the Hermitage, Louve, etc. etc. . Trust me. It's that good. And it is amazing that it is sitting right on Meeting Street in Charleston, SC.
Beautifully kept historical property.
Interesting tour. House is stuffed full of antiques and artifacts from the gilded age. Tour guide seemed knowledgeable about every piece. House is gorgeous.
Great place to get a lot of history in a relatively short amount of time. It felt very cluttered inside, but that's to display everything and help you experience this snapshot of history
This is one of the most incredible (and almost visually overwhelming) collections of treasures from around the world. There are countless, over the top impressive, treasures from China, Japan, Russia, the Middle East, and other far reaches of the world. Our tour guide had SO much knowledge of just about every piece in the house and the history of the mansion. Be prepared to see each room is totally packed with treasures which is overwhelming at first, and you can’t take photos. Which ultimately was nice as I ended up looking at all the details and opulence in total awe. We saw tons of Tiffany chandeliers, lamps, vases, a faberge egg, a Japanese emperors chair, the most gorgeous music room... and it goes on. The gardens are worth a stroll even if you don’t go into the museum. Admission is a little pricey, but to have access to such history and treasure was worth it IMO.
Beautiful home and stuffed with antiquities. Great tour guide. Pretty garden.
Beautiful house; very good guide. It was the last tour if the day so I think she was rushing a little. Well worth the $17 entrance fee.
Lots of really unique and interesting things to see. The $17 tour is a short tour; you can see almost everything in the house, but from a distance. They offer a more expensive, in-depth tour as well.
Denise was an excellent and enthusiastic guide. She deserves the pink vase.
The house tour was amazing and so informative! I loved being able to step back into history and seeing all the different chandeliers and mouldings and woodwork! Then you step into the meticulously groomed gardens surrounding the house! Statues and fountains among the foliage make it so peaceful. So much beauty to take in! We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here!!
I had high hopes for the visit to Calhoun mansion, but was very disappointed. While the items collected were varied and part of history there was no order or sequence to the collection. The unique pieces collected would be better served in a public museum, like the Smithsonian, where they can be maintained, preserved, explained and open to the public free of cost.
No pictures inside. It's a cool place with a lot of neat stuff inside but quite disorganized. Everything is just all over the place.
Knowledgeable guide. Well kept and interesting history. 45 minutes isn’t long enough to absorb all the information and see the items in the rooms. Smaller groups are better than a big crowd
It was fascinating to hear the story of the house and the restoration, but walking through the house was disappointing. There was so much stuff in the house it was like I was walking through a hoarders home. It was just not my cup of tea.
I am a local. Anytime a guest comes into town, we take them downtown for the day. We do the Market and The Battery, but our favorite is to tour of the largest home in the city, the Calhoun Mansion. Today was really nice with our guide Kelsey. She was such a pleasant young lady. She was very patient with one the guest. You can tell she enjoys her work and being surrounded by such beautiful things. The collection of antiques is amazing. It is an ever changing collection from around the world, and rivals most museums I've ever been in. My favorite piece in the collection is the Bosendorfer piano. I would love to hear it.You get to see history, preserved in the largest part of the collection, the house itself.
Such a wonderful house filled with history and it's belonging. It was a great tour in one of the crown jewels of the city!
Not an inexpensive tour, but the mansion is incredible to see. Tour guide is very knowledgeable and provides more info than you can keep up with, and she was always willing to repeat info and answer any questions. If you're into seeing how the rich people lived, it's worth it. If you like more museum style displays with placards, probably not going to be your cup of tea.
A nice little tour of an actual residence. The owner has a large selection of gorgeous, priceless pieces that he's collected throughout the years. The garden is beautiful as well. Our tour guide was awesome. She was Betty knowledgeable of the history and the pieces in the home.
Beautiful place, friendly staff. We did not do the house tour but we did walk the gardens and visit the store and museum. We were standing outside the gate snapping photos when one of gardeners smiled and insisted that we walk around the gardens.
Not a whole lot of history here. Basically you pay money to stand in the hallways (behind ropes) and look at the owners (who does occupy the house) collection of antiques. So much of it, that I found it a little distracting. The home itself is grand and restored, just wish you could actually see more of it.
Absolutely a OMG tour. The house itself is impressive, but the furnishings are just jaw dropping impressive. The guides are knowledgeable, & friendly-actually anxious to answer questions! This't a pre-civil war mansion tour, but you will walk away just shaking your head.
Interesting pieces but not worth the price of admission. Not really educational like other historical tours. More like antiques roadshow speed dating.
This wasn't worth our time as tourists in my opinion. The house was cool, the history behind the house is funny. The tour guide was really nice. BUT the people that own and live in this house are collectors of artifacts from that time period, which you would think would be really neat.... But this is extreme. There is stuff EVERYWHERE! I felt as though I couldn't appreciate any of it. You couldn't appreciate the house and architecture, because every inch was covered with something, and to someone not familiar with antiques I didn't really know how cool all the "stuff" was either. Do yourself a favor, listen to the story of the house, walk the grounds, but don't bother paying for the house tour.
Nice place to spend some raining day time.
It's beautiful but there's so many artifacts in the mansion that in my opinion, take away from the beauty of the home. You only learn a little bit about the artifacts and are left wondering about a lot of things. Worth a visit. The home is stunning.
Nice house, not worth the $ for a guided tour. The walk around property was nice.
16 Meeting Street has well over a billion dollars worth of every type of art, antique, militaria, and collectible on display under one roof from all four corners of the globe. The Syrian furniture with hand inlaid ivory in the 'Middle Eastern" themed room is priceless. There are many other interesting things throughout the property such as historic Samurai's armor, the dining set from the Czar of Russia, and best of all, a lot of Americana. The Calhoun house of Charleston, South Carolina is a must-see whether you're just passing through or local.
I was here several years ago and loved it. Went back last week, and found it too full of beautiful pieces and rooms roped off to hold them. Other rooms were closed completely.
A piece of history in shape of a very elegant structure an amazing mansion. It's history is quite interesting, if you like tours and history well this one is definitely a place you will like.
The whole city looks like Calhoun Mansion. I am talking about its natural State. Love it here.
Amazing and so impressive. Even more impressive on the inside than it is on the outside. Definitly worth it if your in the area and have an extra 30-45 min.
Very detailed tour of an eccentric place. No pictures are allowed to be taken inside. Very good tour for the price and wonderful tour guide.
The mansion itself is beautiful, but it's kind of like a fancy hoarder house—so cluttered with antiques that it detracts from the architecture. The tour guides say that the volume of objects in the house is historically accurate, but the pieces themselves are a hodgepodge of historical periods. The owners should consider doing more curating and less "collecting".
If you love American history and architecture, highly recommend. The house and gardens are beautiful and the tour informative.
It is expensive and we don't get to see much. The guide was really nice and impressive she could answer any questions on any objects.
Incredible. Just a little bummed they don't let you take pictures inside.
This place is precious It is a old renovated mansion full of art cllected over the years and a nice and pretty garden The mansion is real southern Charleston style and has still some original features in it The tour explains you all details
Excellent property and tour. Had a great time and learned a lot!
The home and grounds are beautiful, definitely worth a look. However, if you're wanting a family/home history, you won't get much here. The majority of the tour is spent talking about all of the antiques the current owners have scattered all over the mansion. Though impressive, it feels lacking at 40 minutes and allowance to only the hallways of the first and second floors. If you want more of a history of the actual property and original owners, I would recommend the Nathaniel Russell home tour just down the road for $4 less per person.
A phenomenal collection of the decorative arts in a Gilded Age setting.
The only guilded age mansion open to the Public in South Carolina. Densely adorned with timeless pieces.
The grounds of this house are beyond beautiful. But if you have any phobias of articles falling on you or dead animals on the wall, or random samurai people everywhere this will not be the house for you. Very very very cluttered not southern charm but still beautiful.
Rude tour guide. Started tour 15 mins late. Too much clutter too enjoy architecture
Astonishing collection in an impressive home.
Great historic house, but it's been cluttered with eclectic collection of unrelated collectibles of the current (unrelated) owner. Would be great if the tour focused more on the house and history of the area. Rather pricey.
Me and my wife took a tour of the Calhoun House last fall and we loved it. If you love architecture and antiques, it is a must see for a visit to Charleston. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the house and answered every question we asked. We lucked out and there was only one other couple with us, so it was almost like we got a private tour of the house.
This mansion, by far, was the highlight of our extensive Charleston visit. Although we visited more than 10 houses and 5 plantations, Calhoun stood out! We did the Grand Tour, which was worth every penny of its hefty $75/person price tag. We got a generous 90 minute private tour, which included many floors, many rooms, and the largest, most impressive collection of art and antiques collection I have ever seen from around the world (and I say this as someone who visited the Newport mansions and historic homes throughout NY, NJ, CT). We took our three kids with us (ages 8-9 yo), and they loved it as much as my husband and me. The tour guide was especially great with them, pointing out items that would especially appeal to them, and allowing them to go on the antique elevator. We truly felt like special guests in a private home. The fact that the house is actively lived in by its owners also wowed me. We felt very fortunate that they shared their beautiful collection with us. At the end, we were hugging folks goodbye, as we purchased the book, which includes great photography of the many rooms and items - a wonderful souvenir. Please, take the time, and the extra expense, to check out the Grand Tour, which is far more extensive than the standard cheaper tour. Treat yourself.
Wonderful carpentry work and a fascinating piece of history
Very beautiful inside and out. Can't take pics of inside residence because current owner lives there and it's all his personal belongings but it's worth it to go check it out if you're in the area. A lot of history and just beautiful items from the gilded age.
Very fun to tour. There were many interesting stories sorrounding the house and our tour guide was great.
Interesting house, interior design is very bad. It hurt my eyes. Lots of art pieces but not first class art. Seems like piled on top of each other. I wouldn't recommend visiting it. Go to an antique's shop instead, it's free. Or at least don't expect to be able to see much of the inside, it's too cluttered.
Our docent was nice and knowledgeable. Impressive collection, almost too much to comprehend.
This is an absolute must see. Owner has his personal renaissance era collection of artifacts worth over a BILLION dollars inside. There is so much to see it is overwhelming. Fantastic grounds with beautiful flowers. Plants, trees and ponds. Owner lives in house and was walking around chatting with us, very cool guy that sorta looks like Andrew Zimmern from Food Network, lol. Several movies filmed on site as well
A must see
A must see if you come to Charleston! There is soooooo much to see inside the house, and it has an awesome history. The tour guides seem to know everything about the house down to each spoon on the dining room table.
Very beautiful house. Really have too much stuff in the house to enjoy seeing it all...
Incredible. It's not your typical historic home tour but more a journey through a most extensive private collection of Gilded Age antiques. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the collection. Would consider doing the private tour on my next visit.
Rich history, well told wish just enough personal touches. We highly recommend a tour.
Amazing place with a truly unique story. Very cool what the current owner has done with this historic property. The gardens are beautiful as well. The tour guide (s) - I think there's only two - was outstanding and it was clear that he really enjoyed the property. Everybody visiting or living in Charleston should visit it.
Went today. Xmas eve, other homes closed, this is my only tour due to vacation timing. We enjoyed it. We toured 5 yr ago too. So much to see. Antiques never seen elsewhere beautiful home.History given of all owners and belongings of home. Well spoken lady guide. So glad it was not demolition in 1970s. Love the awesome woodwork, doors, gardens. Bought trinket of chandelier crystal to take home. A Living History Home.
This is one of my favorite places in Charleston! it's one of the filming locations of the notebook, a beautiful example of Charleston history, an antique collectors dream, a great place for tourists that are given daily, and I Charleston photographers dream house to photograph. I was one of the very few photographers in Charleston that had the privilege of being invited in and give an exclusive access to the mansion to photograph. #christinamariephotography
I suggest the self guided tour with headphones. Very informative and interesting.
ELEPHANT'S FOOT WAS BAD TASTE OR I WOULD HAVE EVEN THIS PLACE 5 STARS. WITH THAT SAID THE HOME IS VERY NICE!!!!
Too many non sequitur artifacts. So much clutter from antiques that have nothing to do with the house. House is nice but you only get to see 20% of it. Walk the grounds for free, not worth the $17 ticket price.
Stunning mansion! Worth stopping by and at least wandering through the garden. They have tours every half hour :)
Felt ripped off. Saw only a fraction of the house. The collection was simply clutter to be observed from behind ropes
This place is very underrated. It's a small group tour and you can get really close to some amazing artwork from around the world. Around every corner my jaw dropped by how many great works of art were in a private home. Art from Europe, Japan, India, Egypt, China, you name it. All sorts of crazy taxidermy stuff too.
We found the tour of the Calhoun Mansion to be very interesting. Given there is a ton of collectables in this home that are not original to the home, we still found them interesting to see and learn about. Our guide had very insightful information about the history of the home and what has been done to restore the home. You can certainly see the effort that has been made to bring the structure back to its historical beauty. So look past all the stuff 9 however much of it is very cool) and pay attention to the bones of the structure and the beauty and craftsmanship that went into building and restoring this home.
Great place with knowledgeable and friendly tour guide. So many interesting antiques, one tour is not enough to see everything.
I feel ripped off and I will tell you why...$16 dollars a person. For a restored mansion 35 room, 24thousand square foot Mansion that we only saw about 10 rooms, if that. No kitchen or bathrooms included. Oh, you could look at a photo of the kitchen in the gift shop, tour guide said. Hardly anything original. A private man’s collection of valuables to look at basically. Definitely for us, not worth the cost of admission!
Awesome suite! We will be back soon for sure! Food is the best!! When only the Best will do- this is the place!!
Stuffed to the brim with antiques it feels more like a vintage store than a house someone would love in. You may not take pictures of videos inside and just the first two floors are accessible. Ifnyoubworkbon homes and objets d'art you should visit, otherwise you might meant to skip it.
Interesting tour of 10000 square feet of a 24000 square foot home. Gaudy pieces from all over the world ...a perfect representation of the gilded age mentality. Architecture of the house is stunning. Would have lived to have seen more of the house. Hard to tell from the street that the house is so large.
An amazing collection of art...all kinds of art! Very eclectic collection...all displayed beautifully. I could go back time after time and see things I missed the first time around.
This was so great. Must see!!
Worth the stop.
Beautiful home, but too many collectibles for me to truly experience the architectural elements of the home. To each his own, though. With the size of the home, I would have enjoyed seeing more of it! The exterior and the gardens are fabulous!!
Lots of fun and very interesting to hear about the expansive antique collection housed here. The garden is beautiful. Try to take the 11:00 or 11:30 tour to hear all the clocks chiming at noon.
Nice home that has been well preserved. So many antiques from all walks of life. Just like going back in time.
Great look into the past. Beautiful gardens.
Thank you for sharing your home with us we had lots of fun. The art collection is unbelievable I wish we could see it closer and have more time to understand it. Our guide spoke too quickly for us to appreciate the stories of the art collection. So many great stories it might be worth to write a book for
North and South was filmed here! An awesome tour!
My experience to this place was amazing. I am very amused by all the art and how the walls can hold half a ton sculptures. Don't get me started on the samurai outfit. It was amazing and a nice place to tour. I think that it is worth the money and even as a teen I think it was quit an experience.
The notebook being one of my favorite movies of all time made this a must. They dont allow cameras which sucks but I get it. This was used for the entry way of Allie's family summer home.. the room where Noah sits and overhears her parents talking smack. The grounds are beautiful as well!
Amazing collection and good historic place to visit
Beautiful restored mansion from the gilded age that still serves as a private home and personal art collection exhibit. Incredible detail and opulence with an interesting back story. Our guide was very knowledgeable and was able to answer nearly every question. You only get to see the first two floors and photography is prohibited.
Place is overloaded of antiques. Valuable pieces from around the planet. Keeping them in their status is a great job.
We loved this tour. Amazing how many unique things are in this house
Great place for family vaction
Nice place interesting to see old mansion
Absolutely fabulous collection of antiques and artifacts from all over the world. 24,000 square feet of the most fabulous wood, marble, hand painted ceilings, etc. The small tour takes you through about 20 different rooms and costs around $16. The Grand Tour is 75$ and takes you through all rooms in the house.
Guilded age everything! Always something new and beautiful to discover.
Its more of a museum than a historical house tour. Amazing collection of artifacts, but not great if you are touring looking for local history.
Beautiful Guilded Age mansion, privately owned...gorgeous authentic European antiques...a must see!!!
Definitely worth a visit, the tour was pretty good
Well worth the visit. A must for anyone with a little something for everyone. It's hard to explain, and difficult to describe. It's something you have to see to believe and appreciate.
Very informative tour of a beautiful house.
The Calhoun Mansion is a beautiful house, and I would have liked to have seen more of it. Unfortunately the tour takes in only a small portion of it, and the rooms you get to see are so full of the owner's collections that there's barely room to move. There are some impressive pieces in the collection, but it could definitely be improved with some editing and organization.
My Friend Courtney and I took a private tour this morning and was able to tour with the owner! What an honor to meet and spend so much time with him! An absolute gentleman with such a passion for this home and everything in it!As a true lover of Victorian history I felt like I was in a dream! To see so many beautiful things in one place was an opportunity you seldom get to enjoy! Charleston should be honored and grateful for someone to come in and save one of it's most treasured gems! Will go back over and over! The owner made us feel like we were at home! We left there feeling like we owed a whole lot more then we paid! Thank you Mr.Stahl for sharing your amazing home with us!
Incredible restoration of a historic Italianate mansion filled to the brim with international antiques presented by a knowledgeable and pleasant guide. Well worth the 35 minutes and reasonable fee.
Loved the tour and what a great collection of artifacts.
You need to go with a guide on site, special place with an amazing number of treasures
Tell everyone if you go to Charleston you have to visit this mansion!
We stumbled upon this house as we were walking around so decided to take the tour. Very nice house with a neat history! Take the tour!
I've never been to a more gorgeous place!
Amazing inside and out!! Incredible renovation and antique collections. Our guide was full of information and answered all of our questions. He had a fun sense of humor that contributed greatly to our enjoyment of the home.
This is worth it if you truly enjoy seeing a large eclectic place with many worldly antiques. It was impressive and a feast for the eyes to take in. I thoroughly enjoyed it along with the history.
We found this place on our first visit to Charleston. We just happened to walk by, the front entrance chandelier caught my eye, then I read Calhoun Mansion on the outside rod iron fence. Being the reality tv junkie that I am the name Calhoun jumped out at me (Cathryn Calhoun Dennis from southern charm) We passed by at about 5:15 and the last tour is at 5 so we came back the next day. All I can say is WOW!!! We did the $17 tour and it was amazing. Later to find out they have a $75 tour that is more in depth. We will definitely recommend this gem to anyone we know who may be visiting Charleston. It truly is an optical treat, you see sooo much. Even if you’re not a fan of antiques or history, it’s still something magical to see. I can almost guarantee you have never seen anything like it and probably never will. It is so unique. It’s hard to imagine how one individual can collect so many jaw dropping pieces. We will definitely be back and will do the $75 in depth tour. To the owner of this masterpiece I say this, thank you for sharing such a private piece of your life with us. Also, I’ll be turning 30 November 2019 can I have my party in your house? By party I mean a slice of coconut cake from the peninsula in your dinning room
Absolutely loved this place! The tour was very detailed and the house and grounds are spectacular. We were given a great deal of color from the tour guide who really knew the history of the house and owners. Highly recommended!
Lovely visit to a historic Charleston home.
Too many items of the current owners. A waste of money
A beautiful place to visit during a walk-around of old Charleston!
The history of the home was interesting. The home had many beautiful features. I was expecting the interior to be in the antebellum style it was not. I was also disapointed that there was no items that belonged to the orginal family. The home was done in the Gilded age style. There were so many antiques it was over-whelming. The guide talked about a lot of items that were in the rooms but you couldn't really see any of them. The rooms were roped off and you were only allowed to step one foot into the rooms.
The tour guide Ed was very informative and gave a brief history of the house and the items in it. There were 9,000 pieces in the house from all over the world dating back to the 1600s. It was a little pricey to get in, but the pieces were fabulous! Great museum.
Cool to see the inside of the house. But you only get to tour a part of it. It was fun, but I wouldn't do it again
Very interesting guiding by Anna. I definitely recommend you to do the tour of this amazing house!
Great tour. Denise was excellent!
I really appreciate the history behind this meticulously constructed mansion; however, the current owner has turned most of the attention away from the historical significance to his personal antique collection.
Beautiful scenery
Beautiful mansion. A must see while in Charleston.
Interesting place. You get to visit the first and second floors of this historic mansion. The current owner, who lives in the home, is an art collector and the house is his store room. Most items are from the period when the home was built. Tour takes about 40 minutes to complete. Would recommend it to visitors who are interested in the history of the area.
A beautiful home and amazing collection of artifacts from around the world.
Not what we expected, definitely not worth 17 apiece to tour. It is all restored and full of the current owners private collections. And basically has nothing to do with the Calhoun famy. So disappointed! We should have tried the Nathaniel Russell house or ventured 30 minutes north to a plantation.
The tour guide was excellent and the grounds were lovely, but the house itself was so full of collectibles that it appeared cluttered.
Breathe taking collection set in a stunning architectural gem. A must see!
We took a tour of this house and in the end our assessment was it was really a tour of the antiques and art collection of the owner. At least half of the house is off limits and most of the tour is done from behind ropes looking into rooms. If you enjoy antiques and art then this may be interesting to you but we were disappointed in that we thought the architecture was going to be the focus ... the rating is of the contents .. .as a house tour it would be rated lower. The tour guide was very knowledgeable but no photography is allowed during the tour.
Beautiful gardens, fountains and flowers
You really don't get much info about the stuff in the house, very nice tour lady and I enjoy paying for museum visit but save you the money it's just a hoarder house with expensive things. A museum should info tag what things are so a visitor can leave with knowledge of what they just saw instead of a antique shop feel that you can visit for free.
We had a fantastic tour guide who did a great job explaining the house. It is absolutely filled to the brim with souvenirs from around the world that show the opulance of the house compared to that of the surrounding area. Very different from some of the homes in Charleston and definitely worth a visit.
I'm not going to complain about anything but the proported taxidermy of the "dodo bird". It looks like an overweight grey duck. There are NO EXAMPLES of a dodo bird in existence. There is one half of a skull at Oxford and a pieced together skeleton from the swamps of Mauritius. Also, FYI, the Canadian Goose is no where near extinction. Cool woodwork in the house though.
Must go see this if visiting Charleston....the antique collection is supreme. The house is incredible.
There is not a lot of Charleston history here. Instead the house is chock full of an amazing mishmash of historic world artifacts. It is impossible to see it all in a single visit. Nothing is labeled, so you must ask the guide for details. I give it 3 stars rather than 5 because I came expecting local history and because nothing is identified. To be fair, this is a lived in private residence. No picture taking allowed.
Amazing house, with wonderful artifacts. Tour guide was polite and knowledgeable. Super bummed that the third floor was not being toured when we visited, and that most rooms were roped off :(.
What a beautiful place. The collection of art and sculptures, as well as lovely chandeliers is amazing.
It was not what I expected. It is not owned by the Calhoun family, which isn't a big deal. What was a big deal is it was basically a hoarders house. It is the owners primary house and he houses all of his random collectibles. I wanted more information on the house and the history of the family. You also only tour the first and second story, and even on the second story you do not go into all of the rooms. Not worth the time or money, very dissatisfied.
I've lived in the Charleston area for 26 years and can't believe I just visited this gem this year for the first time. I have visited twice in the last three months. I plan on taking all my out of guests here. You need to visit more than once to take it all in. There are so many priceless antiques and works of art to see. They don't call it the OMG house for nothing! Denise was my tour guide both times. She is a wealth of knowledge and makes the tour fun and interesting. I highly recommend her tour. The Calhoun Mansion is a must see!!
Southern Charm oozes out of this historic mansion in Charleston's historic downtown district. The mansion is massive and charismatic with a large variety of well decorated rooms. Part of a bridal present from the vice president of the confederacy, the history of the house isn't always pleasant, but it is an impeccable model of the style of the time. It's well worth a tour while visiting the town.
A must see if you are in Charleston.
Great collection, and an amazing music room.
John Caldwell is actually my great great great grandfather I would love to visit south Carolina see the museum, visit his grave site because there are not many family members who would even consider doing that since they didn't know him! But he is my grandfather . And a very important part of history ❤️
Denise was an amazing and extremely knowledgeable guide! We were the last tour of the day, and she gave a very energetic tour to a large group. Very impressive! I wish the tour was longer (maybe a day?!)!
Great guide with good Historical information
