This Museum is classified in the category of History museum.
I expected much more from the only Museum about slavery in Town... It Is small and with few items. Good explicative panels
A must see for anyone visiting Charleston. This museum houses a lot of the history of this beautiful city, and without it, Charleston would not be as rich and amazing as it is.
It was hard to see so many of the items in this museum but I believe everyone should go to see the truth of our country's history. Perhaps it would make us stop and refuse to allow racism to continue in any way.
Prepare to spend time reading. Take your time and read it all. It's a necessary education that your school never taught.
A+ experience. A very powerful reflection of the world during slavery in the US and Africa. The female guide at the desk who hails from Georgia (forgot her name) is magnificent. A real treasure in explaining Charleston's sad and central role in human bondage. Don't miss this ... give yourself an hour to learn so much of this regrettable history.
A small museum, with some really good original audio of ex slaves. Makes you think how recent it was relatively. My 14 year old enjoyed/ found it interesting. It was a bit too textual for my 12 year old. Not one for younger kids.
If I did not do anything else on this trip the museum made the entire trip worth it. I was sad, angry and enlightened all at the same time. The gentleman who runs the place gave us so much insight and additional knowledge. The best part is my son's ❤️ learned a lot as well. The place is small but jam packed with a lot of stuff!
It is really tiny but I guess it was probably good for slave market to stay small. Although not a ton to see but there is no reason not to pay a visit since it's close to every other tourist site.
This museum is mostly reading, along with old photographs and a few artifacts. There are also some recorded interviews with former slaves that were very interesting. The text is all very informative and I definitely learned a lot that I didn’t already know
A moving and informative exhibition that must be visited and reflected upon.
History Buffs Will Love, Just OK for the Rest of Us
Almost all reading, very few items to see. No photos allowed. It would be better if it had more historical pieces.
Such a moving and educational experience, a must see in Charleston!
Great place to spend some time. Lots of history here to learn about. Is pet friendly. Was pretty hot inside when I was there. I think i had to pay a few bucks to get in but wasn't much if I did. If you like history stop in I learned a lot.
It's heart breaking and surreal. Though mostly text-based information, it's the setting that will emotionally grip you.
Gives you a look into the dark history of our country. A must see if you want a better understanding of US history.
Great hosts. Very knowledgeable and helpful for any questions.
Intense and moving experience. A lot of info to read but with a helpful introduction from decent.
Wasn't impressed at all. The outside of the building was way more impressive that the interior contents. The slave pricing was interesting, but that's about it.
A must visit for anyone interested in the history of slavery and its afterlife. It's a difficult space to be in, it carries a lot of strong psychic/spiritual energy. May be overwhelming for some....but a definite stop if you're interested.
Good, Bad or Indifferent; there will always be a need to record the deeds of humankind so that we can learn from our rights and wrongs. Hopefully someday we can collectively agree on what deeds fall into which category.
Got a discount from a walking tour really cool place!
Well worth your time to learn about such an important part of American history! There is also an elevator for handicap accessibility.
This should be one of the very first places you see in Charleston. It gives depth and context to everything else you'll see and a more honest look at slavery's history than the often sanitized versions you'll be given elsewhere. Not scary or graphic, I'd recommend it for ages 9 and up. I taught 25 years and would have taken my 4th and up classes. Its small but well done. Be sure and check out the books for sale.
In my opinion it should be free for the slaves descendants who want to visit it and reconnect with their history, which has been for sure hidden too many times. They shouldn't even have to pay for this. A part from this, it is a necessary visit where we should all go, and teach ourselves about.
The exhibits were highly informative and well done, and this is a small museum so it doesn't take a long time to absorb the material. I would rate them a 4. My 1 rating is because an employee behaved so belligerently towards me when I politely asked a question he just didn't like.
I am a changed human. This place is important. If you go to Charleston and don't visit, you have made a big mistake. Lots of emotions going through me after this visit.
An amazing piece of history kept from development for good reason. There's a lot to read and experience. It's truly a place that you feel instead of see. Definitely frames the gorgeous setting and architecture in Charleston in an appropriate and honest frame. A Must see if you want to understand Charleston's history fully. Though a dark history it doesn't take away to the city's current charm, it does add a dimension of understanding that I consider essential to truly appreciate Charleston
Very interesting, learned quite a bit here.
Incredible immersion into history. A must see.
This place is worth a detour from the major tourist attractions. We can’t (especially us southerners) forget what happened. My Nanny and Papa knew former children of slave’s in their youth. Charlestonian’s carry a great shame.
A great example of American history
Great history but sad.
Omg a 1 year old black baby sold for only $100.00 so sad but totally eye opening
A wonderful educational experience. Very enriching. Certainly an important part of the low country culture.
Just Wow! The history of this place blew my mind.
Small but very informative museum. Other than being in the location where slaves were sold you don’t really experience what the slave mart was like or looked like. Some amazing facts on display about the slave trade as well as some details of what the slaves experienced.
Learned a lot about the cruel history. Friendly staffs!
Very interesting place. History is amazing resource to learn from. Yes, this shows us a bad time in our history. This is definitely a must see.
I take my family here every time someone from another state comes to visit. It's the only piece of true heritage we have left standing.
This place was filled with info. A must stop place if you are in or around downtown Charleston S.C.
A detailed account of the slave trade within the premises of where slaves were actually traded in South Carolina for the rest of the USA. This compact museum covers the history of the slave trade, how it came to be and the cruelty and inhumane nature of this terrible part of world history. Taking photos inside is prohibited. The exhibits are quite detailed with many facts and figures, so bring a pen and paper if you are wanting to record any key dates or statistics for a project or research assignment.
If you're looking for physical displays and artifacts, this is not the museum you're looking for. That being said, the information provided here is very interesting and eye-opening! Lots of great reading material if you're interested in understanding more about this time period. When I went with my wife and brother-in-law, the guy at the door had a very well rehearsed spiel for us.
Awesome walking tours. The city was very cool.
Lots of slave history. Very knowledgeable staff.
Sobering. Not a whole not in the way of artifacts, but the displays were very informative and I learned a lot about the reality of slavery both in the US and elsewhere. The guides were very kind and I appreciated them reminding us that this is a place where actual human beings were bought and sold as property and to be respectful of that. If you are bringing young kids be prepared to do a lot of reading to them. A must-see. Not because you want to, but because you have to. Giving it 4 stars because I felt the admission price was a little high.
As many other reviews state, the museum is small and there is a lot of reading, but I strongly feel like the $8 was worth it. Very informative and the staff was so helpful. I would suggest to have an audio tour as an option. It was difficult to focus on the reading because it was a small area and noise carried. I was very embarrassed by some of the questions asked and statements made there. I can only attribute it to ignorance.
Very interesting facts learned. The people that work there are very knowledgeable about the museum
Very detailed history of how slaves were brought on ships and how they lived and worked. All pictorials and lots of details. Photos were not allowed.
Amazing space. History recounted very well and lots of historical items on display. A very respectful space
An informative, disturbing, museum about the involuntary, vicious African diaspora and Charleston's role in the multinational enterprise. Come here and be aghast and angered that such crimes against humanity were sanctioned and flourished.
Very informative.
Very historic. A lot of reading . Just hard to really appreciate what happened there
Good for understanding Charleston history.
It's ok, definitely alot of history but it's rather small. I was hoping for a lot more artifacts and a little more hands on interaction with the past. Your not allowed to take pictures and it's mostly a "press the button" type of tour. It would have been nice if they would have kept it in its original state and then placed some old slave mannequin in places to represent the actual events within the slave Mart but oh well....I guess I'll have to continue my search for the museum with the best representation of that time.
For a long time history has been written by the winners. So to hear the history from those who were enslaved is enlightening. It challenges what we are taught in the United States about slavery. It is not pretty but it is our history and we should learn from it. The exhibit was small and packed but had interesting information. The price is fair and there are many discounts for: veterans, seniors, students, children and teachers. While it is small there are very informed people around to answer any questions. There was a session in the back of the building with a Mr. McGill. He pointed out the finger prints in the bricks and how Charleston was made on the backs of slaves. Highly recomendable to anyone who is visiting the city!
Tight, two level museum, packed with information about slavery in Charleston and beyond. It's a very good glimpse into what happened at their historical sight. It's a rather small exhibit, but filled with information and some AV. It's worth a visit if you're in town for a few days. Always feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @joerazz
Great family experience. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and professional.
It is very interesting place to visit to obtain wealth of history, however I was expecting a bit different setup - more interactive way to present information. Currently it is bunch of pictures and written data, however it will be much more informative and interesting for the price paid to have guided tours available. Otherwise liked this museum.
This is a rather small museum but it’s well arranged and information delivered is both educational, interesting and very important. I learned a lot about the domestic slavery that I did not know in advance.
Important history that should never be forgotten
It says all the things that should be said in factual and tasteful way but doesn't sugar coat this terrible time in our history. I learned from the exhibit and I am glad to have visited it
A good place to learn a little bit of American history.
Very friendly working staff.
I grew up in the South and our history isn't pretty. This museum puts some context around the relationship between slaves, slave owners, and slave brokers - the bad, the ugly, and the inhuman. I wish it was more interactive and that the slave holding building wasn't a parking lot, but the price is reasonable and the message is clear. Well worth the time invested.
Today I also visited the slave mart museum. Not many relics in the place besides a few shackles and a beating whip made of 1" wide leather, layered 3 times with rivets securing the section's, attached to hard wood handle. The walls were covered in their rendering of history as were partitions dividing the room in a maze. One murrell displayed a likeness of Nathan Bedford Forest with no mention of the man. I asked persons on both floors "What would have happened to these slaves had it not been for the need of labor in America had their captures not sold them?" All 3 people said they would have been released in their own country. This is what Liberals are teaching our youth. To this very day, captures are selling and killing their kind in Africa. General Forrester's picture has nothing to do with this other than Yankees affiliating him with untruths. Millennials are Government educated.
The speaker in there is wonderful and knowledgeable!
Not as big as I was hoping for the money spent. Also it's a lot of reading and not a lot of artifacts. Because of that it's harder to take children to as there's not a lot for them to do or look at.
The Caucasian people there was socializing and laughing very disrespectful. And it should be free for any Foundational Black American to see.
Very neat place lots to see
The Old Slave Mart Museum was a "must-see" on my list, but I was a bit disappointed. The area used to be used to sell U.S. born slaves for about seven years. You can see the brick on the sides of the buildings, but I think the area used to be more of an open market. Now, just looks like the inside of a building with colorful, big signs with a lot of history and some pictures. I have watched movies and read books about slavery, so most information was not new to me. The information that amazed me was that the price of a 1 year old child was the same as that for a 55 year old man - $100. The value for a man in his prime with skills was $1,500 or $35,000 (in 2007 dollars) and for a woman it is $1,350. I also gained a better appreciation for how horrible it was for the families to have their parents or children sold off, never to be seen again. There was not many artifacts. The shackles, branding iron, whip, and the picture of a man whose back was heavily laced with scars from a whipping stood out for me. There are stairs to climb to the 2nd floor with pictures of how cramped slaves were on boats coming from Africa and other history. We got the combination ticket for the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon plus the Slave Mart Museum (which is closed on Sunday but you can use the ticket on another day). It was $15 per person, and it was a good deal. It is $10 for just the Old Exchange. It is a good deal to get the combo ticket. We spent half an hour at the Old Slave Mart Museum reading the signs that were interesting to us, but if you read all the signs, it would have been longer. We spent an hour at the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon and did the tour.
Highly recommend a walk thru this fascinating piece of history.
Well worth a visit. Learnt a lot!!
An eye opening experience on slavery and the slave trade. A must see when in Charleston!
If you're interested in African American history, this place is a must visit. It's packed w/lot of Slave history. I really enjoyed hearing the actual voice recordings of interviews w/previous slaves who were once victims of slave auctions right there in Charleston. If your easily moved by the mistreatment of others , carry your tissue because it can be very emotional for at times.
Historic yes but it's a place that commands respect. Small space but filled with stories and very impacting
This museum is super small, and frankly overpriced. It has very few artifacts, and instead just has a bunch of panels to read. I could have gained the same amount from reading a pamphlet with the same information. They're building a new museum related to slavery soon, so hopefully that one will be more impressive
This was a rather uninteresting experience as someone not from the USA. I guess the history just doesn't feel relevant to myself in comparison to the atmosphere they are trying to set and in all honesty you can learn more from reading wikipedia than you could visiting this place. There was a political bias that was apparent immediately when I entered the building. No thank you! I like to learn without feeling pressured into a guilt trip.
Small but impactful museum detailing the height of the domestic slave trade in the 1850s and Civil War era. Tastefully done, with tons of informative signage.
It was educational and interesting to see the original pieces used during slavery. It was heartwrenching to know slavery was a real life experience but the museum made me feel connected to my ancestors. The museum is well put together but unfortunately due to city laws, taking photos is not allowed. However, the attendant will hold up a picture of the original Slave Mart for you to photograph if you'd like. I have the photo posted to my comment.
Very informative, yet sad
EXCELLENT MUSEUM!!!! The museum tells the story of the enslaved people in Charleston and gave our trip a richer, more complete history. We lucked out because we were able to hear the presentation behind the museum and see the fingerprints in the bricks. It was so fascinating!
This is an informative, historical site. You feel a sense of being on hallowed grounds. It's both deeply saddening while enlightening. There's a lot of reading so for a place that's not real big you can spend a lot of time if you choose to read each display. My only improvement would be to have a guide for at least part of the tour as it is all self guided.
I did not go through the museum because the guy at the front desk was such a jerk. Had a horrible attitude, obviously had a chip on his shoulder, was not friendly at all. We asked a few questions, his answers were snide and rude. Finally said, BS, and left. Fire him, get someone there who can be friendly.
I had a wonderful experience
Very informative, a lot of reading. Can get crowded easily. Would be nice if there was a guided tour that someone gave info on things.
Absolutely blown away by the history and knowledge of the staff
This exhibit was harmful. It depicts, contrary to all that is known about it, the shameful institution of slavery as a friendly negotiation, in which: “Enslaved blacks knew their value. Just before and during the time of auction, the enslaved workers’ focus was negotiation with traders and buyers—to preserve family ties, to do work they found worthwhile and to make their lives easier in any way possible.”
Everyone should visit here. It is part of American History; even though it is dark. It is very informative. Don't bury your head in the sand. This is for all people of all ethnic backgrounds.
Very well done and very interesting.
It amazing that white people will find every reason to complain about the truth regarding their own history in America and that of black people! If you feel guilty while visiting it’s likely that you actually have real human emotion and understand that what white people have done and continue to do is wrong! The truth is hard to digest; especially for those who benefit from the most horrible parts of it, in this case chattel slavery!
Have never been here but actually walked past it today. Didn't go inside. The front of the building is really unique.
I didn't have a chance to go inside unfortunately but you must know that the building is historical as it's name describes. I saw lots of artifacts inside and I can't wait to go visit.
Very unique, and eye opening for how people used to treat other people.
Very informative. It's self guided. 2 stories of history. A bit creepy that it still exist. The whole building is not original except the walls and arch. Buy the combo tickets for both places. It's a very sad, malicious history to read and learn about. America's history.
Great, albeit heart wrenching museum. Informative and a painful part of America's history, well displayed for anyone interested in learning.
Not what I expected, but was an eye opener. Great information
It's like you dont even care. Let's just throw a few things together, write some stuff on the walls and call it a museum. Please do better to truthfully educate people. You have got to have the slave ship manifesto. What were some of the slaves names and ages etc? Who owned all those slave ships? There's plenty more to be told.
Well organized and the art was presented very nicely.
This museum is definitely worth visiting. Very interesting and informative, not to mention moving. Having said that, it is rather static, relying a lot on textual information, so don't forget your glasses!
Must visit. $10 ticket. The exhibits and history is well presented. Provides a good explaination of past practices, a bit shocking and removed lot of my doubts. Please add a guided tour or recorded tour. Would recommend to all visiting the area..
Short visit was plenty, important to see but sad to spend too much time there.
It was a rainy day and the small 2 story building was very crowded. You must read every exhibit and there was only one live verbal introduction.
Incredibly interesting and also affordable museum. I learned a lot.
Great introduction to the facts of the slave trade and economy in Charleston.
Incredibly informative. Great insight into the post
This is mostly reading and visual exhibits. In the early 1900s, audio recordings were made of first hand accounts of slavery, and this is one of the few places where you can listen to them. The museum presents local historical context in it's entirety, making sure the viewer becomes acquainted with all of the facts that surrounded the practice of slavery in the Charleston area. I highly recommend this as a place to silently and solemnly learn about the history of the enslaved people in Charleston and America.
Another beautiful place, filled with historical artifacts
full of history. nice place
Very interesting place. A “need to see” when visiting Charleston.
Worth the visit. History lesson for sure. Learned soo much. EVERYLAST PERSON LOVED IT. GREAT EXPERIENCE in Charleston, SC
This is one of the few museums I know, that specializes in the history of slavery. There are not that many artifacts. It has documents, books, instruments to torture/capture/imprison slaves. The museum building used to be a slave market, and it does explain the history of the slavery and the market in detail. If you are interested on the history of slavery, I would highly recommend this museum. You won't need more than 1-1:30 hour for this museum. There is another old exchange and provost dungeon few blocks from this museum. Exchange building is related with slave trading as well. If you are interested, you can buy a combo ticket to visit both of them.
Really well done museum. Taught me a lot about slavery that they don't put in school books. Left with a better appreciation (is that the right word??) for the plight of slaves. Such an important, and terrible piece of our past.
Hopefully some good will come from having this as a museum andlets hope that no part of humanity has to be live like that in the future.
Very informative about how slaves were bought and sold! Had a speaker that took us out back and told us about buildings that were torn down. Also told us about finger prints in the bricks.
Don't be intimidated by the reading, you'll want to keep reading, trust me. The amount of information and history in this small place is unbelievable! No cameras or photographs are allowed, but what you leave with will stick to you like any picture. We intended to make this a quick stop and stayed a little over an hour. So plan accordingly.
I have read much about slavery but still learned even more here. Very well displayed, easy to read for all ages, staff very helpful. Wish there was space.
The museum has not many artifacts to show, but a lot of boards to read. Reading, for me at least, means quiet surrounding. Since the museum is very small and the staff was so nice to explain more details to some people I decided to just hop through and read more back home. It was just way to noisy in it with the amount of people.
Somber and educational experience that includes some interesting artifacts regarding Old South servitude. Military and educator discounts available. Great little museum housed at a venue where slaves were actually sold within antebellum Charleston.
Great tour guide and very educational and informative.
It should be free to descendants of slaves. Why should we have to pay to see what our ancestors been through. Also if you are insensitive to what slaves been through shut your mouth while you are in there. Don’t anger the descendants Of those who endured this atrocity. The workers need to remind people to be mindful of their surroundings; it’s not a bar!
Very informative. It was interesting learning the USA was responsible for 7% of the Western Hemisphere slave trade...shows how widespread the practice was unfortunately! I also noticed a box of tissues in the lobby. You may need it as you exit since a strong emotional reaction is understandable....
History told that's not in our books. Must visit for tolerance minded people. Our history not that long ago
Third visit for us. We were privileged this visit to sit through a presentation given to students of Charleston College. It was life changing. This I would consider a very special place that is telling the story of a people whose voices were not allowed to be heard.
Highly recommend this place. There is a lot packed into a small place. Take your time as there is plenty to absorb. It's hard to escape that the traders at this markets treated the slaves that come through similar to how people now treat show animals. The increased their rations, groomed them, coached them on what to say to prospective buyers and oiled them up to make them more attractive to potential buyers. This is a sordid history that should not be ignored. I picked up a collection of SC slave narratives on the way out. It's a short book, but gives some great oral histories of people that lived the tale end of slavery.
While not an extensive museum, they do a great job fitting a lot of history into a small place. Maybe a little more South Carolina editorial perspective than other museums, but it was definitely worth the trip.
Very important and interesting information. Very informative staff.
Nice place to visit in Charleston.
Incredible Period History Museum. Everyone, regardless of race, creed or color should be required to understand this unforgivable time in our history. When visiting please take plenty of time to listen, learn and forgive!
You can just about find anything here!I bought a beautiful local made necklace of saltgrass from sullivans island, encased in silver.vendors weave saltgrass baskets into every design you can possibly want.all done in the middle of this amazing city &a couple of blocks from the slave museum, where the slave auctions actually took place!
I highly recommend this museum to everyone. It is such an educational experience about slavery and history. There is lots of reading, but it is worth it to read all of it or as much as you can. There are also many pictures and even audio of people who were slaves telling stories-those were just horrible to hear them talk about slavery. I do not see how any human being would treat another human that way. The museum building is the actual building where the slave mart was which is really neat. It is two floors, but it's not too big and it is wheelchair accessible. It should take about an hour to see everything. No photos are allowed. The cost was fair. It is a smaller space inside, so if there is a group of people, it can be cramped. I still recommend everyone to go at least once.
A wonderful place to take in some knowledge and understanding of some of America's history. George Washington actually stood in one of the rooms that you tour. A wonderful learning opportunity for young and old alike. Beautiful architecture though it is a bit pricey.
Great resources and very informative
Very informative. I would recommend in anyone visiting Charleston.
History. True history. Ms. Christine was very knowledgeable and friendly.
You can't take photos inside. This was amazing! A high point of our visit. This is a sensitive and thought provoking exhibit. It's emotionally intense and lovingly curated by an educated staff. My son and I were disturbed and saddened. But, we needed to see this part of our story. Is tastefully done and young children can come without being scared.
I haven't cry that hard in a really long time. It a beautiful place to visit and learn
I love history .. Good or bad.
We received a very accurate picture of the history of slavery in South Carolina and Charleston's role in the slave trade. I wish more locals came to engage with their own history. Fantastic tour guide.
Truly amazing. Christine was extremely knowledgeable and the museum held so much information. It wasn't water down. I would love to come back again!
Very informative!
Very informative.
What a great look at it past. Reading the displays, I learned a lot about things I didn't know, like there were free blacks that were slave owners, a lot of them buying relatives and friends in the slave trade. I found this extremely interesting. It was indeed a dark time in our country's past, but this is a great way to never forget.
Great information and wonderful place. I would visit again.
From the pages of history undoubtedly, but entry should be made free.
Good exhibition with a lot of informations, staff was friendly. Not 5 stars since it's in an old slave mart but you don't actually feel that your standing there. Of course that would be difficult since the building back then was roofless. But maybe one area of the museum could be dedicated to that experience. Like the original floor and walls.
Interesting place to learn about the slave trade in Charleston. Mainly things to read, all on walls. Very few artifacts so if that's what you want to see, this is not the place.
Well done, quite the eye opener.
Ok so here it is I am giving the slave museum a low review. But you still have to visit this place. The building carried a feeling and was an impactful experience. But the actual museum layout and experience I feel let down. It sort of feeled like a place filler for a city owned musuem. It was 90% reading posters... There was a first experience phone with recorded first hand experiences but it was half broken, and very quiet. I can't say I know how to make a museum like this more impactful or better. But I would start with more imagery and artifacts. I would even just have an empty platform in the middle, the auction block, it would send people mentally to where they were and really hit them. I give this review largely as the lady who sold our tickets called it the #1 attraction world wide. And her speach was deep and really hit everyone who heard it. But I stand by my opinion the exibit could use more artifacts images and a little less reading.
Enjoyed the history, was expecting a bit more as far as a display. But after reading the boards I truly don't think a display would be wise. Museum was informative but seemed a bit repetitive in the stories and information. Overall it was worth the time spent to educate a bit deeper on what has made us who we are.
Very pricey for what is actually not a particularly in-depth or insightful museum. Better collections and accounts exist elsewhere.
It was informative. Alot of reading. No picturs beyond the front.
I felt this was an important place to visit in order to remember Charleston's history. Overall well done but there's a lot of reading on the downstairs, whilst upstairs had more balance between descriptions & artifacts. A small but powerful exhibit.
Great abundance of history and nice staff!
A very engaging display of history
Good place to take a moment and learn our history, which at times can be less than what we would hope for. Yet still enlightening.
No romanticized version of slavery here. Good to keep the history alive, lest we forget. No doubt African Americans made America great.
This city is rich in history. Some of it isn't especially pleasant, but it happened.
