REVIEWS OF Columbia Museum of Art IN South Carolina

Karen Copper

We saw a very interesting exhibition of one of Pollock's early works that scientifically examined its paint contents and the order in which they were painted, giving a small clue about how long it took him to produce it. There is always something good to see at this gem of a museum.

Fee & Tee's LLC

Beautiful place and wonderful staff. I would encourage everyone to go out and look around at some wonderfully made art. If the price is an issue there is free admission on First Thursdays.

James Keith

Impressive art collection.

Brian Kelly

I have been coming here for years. I continue to admire the variety of objects that are permanent exhibits owned be the museum. I also enjoy the traveling exhibits that make Columbia home for a little while. I have had a chance to see works by many famous and historical artists featured here in Columbia. I would like to thank those people that have made this gallery such a success.

Antonio Summa

Well I have been for Pollock so I saw just one paint. It should be better they can invest more R&D

Jason King

Great artwork. Loved the Van Gogh exhibit.

Mark June

Nice art, sculptures and a very unique special exhibit that was inflatables...van gough coming!

Emily Rose Van Benschoten

ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! Breathtaking exhibits, including some true classics by artists such as Monte. Would love to visit again.

Naman Rawal

This is the only place in Columbia where you'll have an out-of-city experience. It's like they built a sliver of New York City or Atlanta in Columbia and placed it in a museum. Arts and Draughts is a good time, the improv comedy is spot on, and the museum art is really impressive. This is the only place in Columbia I'd be sure to visit if I were from out of town.

Marcio G.

Great place to see and visit.

Leontyne Robinson

Plan to return again. Wish had more space for smaller contemporary exhibits that speak to other area of art like the black panther comic exhibit.

Brittany Ireland

Absolutely a must! Love it

Tracy Hale

There was a lot to look at and reasonably priced.

Rebecca Conway

Nice collection of works from many different sources and time periods. A good way to spend 2 or 3 hours in quiet contemplation of artistic expression.

laura Williams

Very lovely museum. Staff pleasant..interesting exhibits. I am giving 4 stars due to lighting over some displays, actually too bright in some areas and takes away from the view. I was not alone in this assessment but will update after next visit.

Kate McDaniel

A great day to spend an afternoon. Friendly staff especially at point of ticket purchase inside.

Sylvia Middleton

Wonderful Free Event music and art

William Sanchez

Being able to see van Gogh in South Carolina was an amazing treat. Their other exhibits were equally fascinating.

Quynh Le

It’s under construction so some parts may not be available or the entrance is a bit messy. The gallery and exhibitions are great. Id love to come back when it completes its construction/renovation

Irene MJ

We enjoy our trip if you a art lover you will like it...

Sarah Winkler

Right, small selection but great assortment- love the media aspect!

Connor Addy

Wonderful world of art and experiences. Enjoy it as a local and a must visit if from out of town.

Donna Robison

Cchaddie Fairchilds

I'd have to say this place is by far the best I've had for a restaurant! I love how the manager left me a birthday card. That was so sweet of him. Our waiter was awesome. He checked on us often to make sure everything was great and he greeted me happy birthday which was nice of him.

Tyson Brown

Beautiful exhibit. Be sure to get the iPad or headphones for the audio tour.

Mandy Guadarrama

I expected more from the Latin American exhibit.....I felt every unwelcomed by one of the white staff members that was following our group around as if we were criminals!

Mikayla W

A great place to spend a couple quiet hours. Staff were kind, helpful, and informative. Such a wide variety of things to see.

Keith Woodward

Bed a fan since 1976, when i could get my parents car if i said we were going to the Art museum ! Then I found out they had concerts too !! From Harpsichord ensemble to Positive Hip with the Hop !!!

Carole Cato

Had our first ever visit yesterday and While It was interesting to see the various collections in the museum the security people were intrusive and hovering so much so it was distracting, while looking at a single item the security person walked by quite a few times, Other areas he went by less. I don’t know what I did to trigger him but I had no purse, backpack ,spray can or moving truck so I’m not sure what that was all about. It also would benefit perhaps to have ropes up so that they don’t have to personally approach EVERY person who is standing too close to the art(also try larger font size to prevent leaning in to read the art information paragraph that is located directly along the side of most paintings), barriers are surely respected and appreciated over being counseled by security as I saw happen to a young woman and her son who got a bit too close. Also the crowd flow was very disjointed and not directed in a organized way and I imagine that makes security more uncomfortable as well. This is just my personal feelings but having my every move being obviously watched is deeply disturbing and made me feel not welcome and took away from the experience. 5 stars for Van Gogh ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ !! 3 stars for the bouncers

jotonthespot M2

Clean new well laid out shop with interesting gifts that would be hard to find in town. Thoughtful selections.

Jane Britton

The recent renovation has made the CMA a world-class art museum. Love the new thematic galleries. A must see in Columbia!

Cristina puig groizard

Nice place, nice art!

Christy Collins

Great museum! Beautiful pieces!

McKay

I’ve been going to this museum since I was a kid. I’ve since grown up and become an art teacher out of state. While visiting Columbia this summer I heard about the inflatable exhibit and wanted to check it out. The museum is AMAZING. The best I’ve ever seen it. The temporary exhibit was so great. Interactive art is one of my favorite art forms. And I appreciated the video about how the pieces were planned out and created. I was also happy to see many different cultures represented throughout the museum. I was so impressed with the upstairs. I love the interactive activities they’ve added (for example, “is this art?”) The post war and contemporary rooms were so great to see, because I think the museum was lacking modern/contemporary art for some time. I had such a great time and I’m so glad CMA is widening its selection!

Beth & Rob Bailey

Love the (new to me) children's area downstairs. (That's what most of the pictures are showing that I posted.)

Catherine Beltran

The new galleries are great! For such a small city, we have a world class museum!

Dave Harris

Wonderfully displayed exhibit.

Brandon Mbih

I think it will be an understatement to deny art in every aspect of life.

SRoc

New Van Gogh exhibit is certainly worth checking out. Great place inside and out. Outside was recently renovated and everyone should come at least once

Kayla Boling

Nice ace to go if you are into Art and historical facts and statues.... Nice quiet place to look around . The place was really big!

Pam

The museum is so cool. They have done some changes and have lots of places inside and out to just chill. My daughter is currently taking a class there. Definitely one of Columbia's bright spots.

Cali Harvell

It was exciting and different and stimulating

Jennifer tucker

First time visitors and we had a really good time Would definitely go back

Issy W

Outside sitting is beautiful. They need to add a restroom.

William Cook

Great hideout from the heat!

Sandy Stafford

Nice venue

katherine Brown

I love it when new exhibit pieces arrive and hat it when others leave. Great Museum.

SJ Porter

It's a small place, but I'm a huge fan. Their ancient artifacts and art are amazing considering Columbia is a smaller city. I'm also a huge fan of their Rennaisance collection. In four years, I've gone no less than 12 times (on dates or with friends) which makes it my personal most-visited art museum in the world.

Kimo Jones

Self Care Sunday was a wonderful event. They should do more free yoga at the museum more often despite the low turnout because of the unsettled weather.

Hal Turner

We enjoyed the Van Gogh event and thank the sponsors for making it possible in Columbia SC.

Alejandro Garcia Lemos

One of the reasons I moved to Columbia! Excellent collection and constant rotating shows.

Chris Denise

Beautiful and well worth the time to visit.

John Lee

Well worth the membership and the Van Goghs are a must see.

James Crocker

Thank you Delores Logan!

Towanda Thompson

Very nice place to explore...

Randy Wallace

Very nice. Saw the Van Gogh exhibition

robert morse

Enjoyed it. Watch for changing exhibits.

Jonathan Carmenate

the staff is beyond friendly and the renovations are absolutely beautiful.

Kerisha Camack

Loved it! Especially the craft portion! Really wish we could've have been informed on the age appropriate art!

Janis Lynch

Jane Peterson was an impressionist or post impressionist and reminded me of the work of Mary Cassat. It is the Second Sunday and was free. I wanted to see this exhibit at the Columbia Museum of Art, I have been waiting for it. I really like the impressionists and post impressionists. All I can say is it was fabulous ! Peterson studied with some very well known impressionists of the day and was very much in demand until the pop art era stole some of her spotlight. But she's back ! Com see her work and patronize one of the museum's coming into it's own place in the sun.

Jon M

For a small town art museum, there's lots to see here.

Patrina Muldrow

Enjoy all your exhibits and art work.

Norman Bailey

Everyone has "Their OWN Opinion" of what is listed (shown here) as "ART".... I had to laugh at a few (many) pieces, a child may have done the "artwork" looked like Watercolor/ paint by #'s Great and Friendly/ Professional staff, ... Not my cup of.........

Elizabeth Crum

The renovated and expanded museum is terrific. The new thematic displays are wonderful. It is a great place to take the family and out-of-town visitors. Don't miss the museum shop either.

L Long

The Van Gogh exhibit was definitely a one of a kind fabulous art exhibit! What a great idea to have the paintings from other masters that inspired Van Gogh hanging beside the Van Gogh paintings that were born from such inspirations....My wife and I have been to many exhibits, and this one tops them all....The curator that put this show together is definitely an asset for South Carolina and the art world in general!

Joe Prince

The Columbia Art Museum is a very nice place to spend a couple of quiet hours in the Soda City. Located in the middle of downtown just a few blocks from the state capitol building. Its galleries are beautiful and easily moved through. The Jackson Pollock gallery is both educational and lovely. All in all a very enjoyable visit.

Martin Morris

We are members of CMA just to support the fine programs of the museum. Recent renovations have provided more space and a new group hall for lectures and concerts.. Art exhibitions often change and are well displayed. As members we can sign up for small group tours or special lecture series. Recently, we attended a free duo Spanish guitar concert that was magnificent on a Sunday afternoon. There are also chamber music concerts 4 times a year for a reasonable charge. For anyone just visiting Columbia, a visit to the changing exhibits of fine art and the CMA collections is a must for art aficionadas.

Siddharth G

I learnt a lot of things here that I didn't know before. Jackson Pollock's 'Mural' was on display along with the story of how it came to be and the technical analysis. My fav was the collection of art of the theme 'Healing'. I suppose this was done by school kids. It depicted how they healed / were healing through their mental or physical sufferings. Gave a lot of hope and inspiration.

Grace Yvonne Stevenson

Gorgeous art museum, renovated and also operates as an event venue. Located on main St. and always featuring wonderful exhibits. VanGoh is coming which is awesome. Classes available too.

Christopher Fallucca

I remember opening day so many years ago.

Kathaleen Baron

This is wonderful place for everyone to learn about art and thier artists. I highly recommend go try some of the new inter active displays available

Bob Recker

Jackson Pollack mural, Warhol Mao painting, several other outstanding pieces, including chandeliers. Very nice facility, free admission on certain days, helpful staff.

peter stalinescu

The best museum in town, feels like New York museums. Plenty of exhibits to go around, Van Gogh exhibit coming in October 2019. Great Costomer service and you allowed to take pictures. There is no cafeteria but the museum has only to floors to explore so it should not take more than 2 hours to see everything. Good place to visit on a rainy day or a hot day in the summer.

Joshua Rainwater

CMA has been providing stellar experiences that keep improving every time. The recent redesign of Boyd Plaza allows for the community to participate in a more efficient and stylish way. The upstairs loft space always has interesting exhibits and events. You can't go wrong when stopping by Columbia Museum of Art any day of the week.

Kari McDonnell

I was very impressed with the art culture in Columbia, SC in general. The Musuem was a great addition to all the local studios I found in this precious little town.

Robert Miller

Good selection of art and artists. Great value for a couple of interesting hours.

Anna J

Pretty cool and not too busy during the weekday. The inflatable exhibit was cool.

Michael A. Jones

This place was the best!!

Garrett Shubert

The Columbia Museum of Art is my new favorite place in Columbia. There is so much art on display I did not have a chance to see everything in one trip. It is a quiet place to explore and learn. There are several membership options, so take a look and see what applies to you and your family.

Austin Williams

Sadly they were renovating when I went there. 2 main collections being added, so that is something to look forward to. $10 without discounts. FOR SURE check out the short story machine on the first floor provided by RCPL. 1/3/5 minute stories printed out on receipt paper like but nicer. The permanent collection is amazing however. Ancient Greece, Roman, Chinese, and European art, statues, furniture and even clothing. Amazing stuff really. Some modern art too was nice. I enjoyed the Mao room. Check it out on a rainy day in Columbia, also close to some great eats.

Nicole Herbert

Awesome place to visit. Loved seeing all the different displays and art work. Would definitely return when I come back through.

abdul omer

The Columbia Museum of Art is most likely the best art musuem in South Carolina really kind staff and curated very well. Also the architecture or the floor layout of the building and exhibits were extraordinary. Look forward to going again soon.

Frank Unger

Senior Citizen female volunteer said "It's YOUR LOSS" when we said we were not taking the tour. What?! A senior gentleman seemed very embarrassed by it. My wife and I came with our 6yr old twins to show them their first art museum - we were approached by another senior who stated she was fired 3 times as a volunteer. Museum staff was awesome and was embarrassed for us - we will be back, minus the volunteers harassing us! Great exhibits, beautiful building!

Aaron Johnson

Art is boring but it's still a nice place.

Trey_ 5tylez

Beautiful art, well displayed, very clean facility, informative friendly staff good job Dwayne. Household will return to see the Van Gogh exhibit.

Joseph Azar

The museum is undergoing renovation to expand offerings to the public, and it is exciting to anticipate. I have been very pleased at the musical offerings, such as the Latin concert just held Sunday. I am a member of a few of the groups the museum has, paying annual dues for them. As a result, I am invited to advance viewings, socials, lectures and other special events that I greatly appreciate. I strongly suggest joining some of these groups to add to your knowledge and experience. It is well worth it.

Sandra Hoexter

Though the individual pieces are interesting, I found the upstairs permanent collection lacked coherent curation. The rooms were a mixture of time and place for no apparent reason. Also the lengthy labels often started with information that seemed obvious to the viewer like the definition of velvet. I left without visiting the first floor exhibits. I walked through the gift shop and nothing caused me to pause. For a city that strongly supports the arts, the museum was a disappointment

natalie smith

Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon out of the heat! Staff was very friendly and helpful. Wide variety of art on display. Took 2 children, ages 6 & 8, and they enjoyed the museum, especially The Cross Hatch (which has great interactive things for both kids and adults to do). And the plaza outside is great with some shade and seating for kids.

Terry Goodfellow

Wonderful collections, fantastic exhibits, creative presentation, entertaining events. A dynamic museum!

Chamal Mediwaka

Nice museum and has great events

Darth Malis 25

Amazing Wonderful Place

Maria Lipscomb

Great place!

Estrella

The exhibits were okay but I attended in the middle of a renovation. However, the best exhibition was the Mexican American experience in the US. Artists interviewed an individual and created a work of art. The museum was in the middle of renovation so I would recommend that you first check and see if it's still being renovated.

Josh Coates

This place is a Columbia jewel. I love everything everything about it.

Dr. Lin

It has an original Botticelli, a Remington statue, the first Chihuly glass work in South Carolina which is stunning and other interesting art.

Jasmine Arit

Fantastic museum. Great exhibits and beautiful atmosphere.

Keith Mallos

My wife found the Columbia Art Museum online. We are on a tight budget and found out that they offer free admission on the first Thursday of the month

Ashley A

It was ok but not the best they need more modern day art and is definitely not a place for kids the best exhibit was the pop up room also a lot of the paintings are replacas but they act like they are real with all the security walking around stalking u to make sure u don't touch anything I never felt so uncomfortable in a museum in my life and I have been to a lot of museums

Kody Hall

This was so much fun! There's a lot to see, but very doable in an afternoon!

Amy Gunter

I LOVE the exhibits. Wow! Pop! Bliss! was fun. Camp Night was really cool. Enjoyed the story slams.

Robert Bailey

Fun, pretty cheap, not stuffy. The room on the ground floor with the art activities is the best

Laura Young

Cool shade in summer..

Tami Hamlin

I enjoyed it. My employer hosted an event here last night. The museum has a lot to offer. plan to return when it is a little less crowded and enjoy the works.

Danny Simpson

Great place loved it gotta go back next time im in town

Fiona Adeniji-Adele

Great place with free entrance to museum on free concert Sunday.

Jessica Willis

What a gorgeous museum tucked into a vibrant downtown. With over 7,000 items in their permanent collection you can visit again and again and see something new every time!

Ramen Mamen

Literally the best day of my life, I can't wait to come back!!

cantstoptheflow

I always like to try something different for my birthday and in 2017 I wanted to go to a art museum. I decided on taking a small trip to the one in Columbia. I had Yelped it to get a feel for it, but actually being there was amazing!!! You have to witness it for yourself!!! There was so much to take in. I couldn't hardly contain myself!!! There was so many styles of art and many different artists represented. There was some type of street festival going on, but it ended early in the afternoon. This made it kind of hard to find a parking spot on the street, but I did find one not far from the museum. It was also very inexpensive for admission to the museum. I took so many pictures inside the museum. I think I took well over 200 pictures just inside the museum. If anyone is looking for something to do while in Columbia I suggest that you put this on your bucket list of things to do in the SC!!!

Monster Guts173

This is a great place to visit. Take a day or an afternoon and take a tour of this wonderful museum.

George Monroe

Small, but filled with great historical works. Track coming exhibitions as they change throughout the year.

Joy K. Thomas

Interesting exhibits but not a lot of them. They had nice music and free water outside

Nora Jackson

Love this plce

Daniel Fuchs

Went on a Sunday, visiting the Van Gogh exhibit. The layout was nice and the workers just as much. Definitely worth a visit if they host an exhibit or event you might be interested in

Lilly Norris

Stunning. The inflatable exhibit was fantastic, I loved how interactive it is!

Ronnie Dawsey Jr

I took my mom in here to just burn time. The student artwork was amazing. I wish I had that kind of talent when I was in school back then.

Rachel Sloan

Really nice place to spend an afternoon. The museum isn't huge, but the selection of art is varied and interesting. I grew up going here for fun days out and for school trips and always thoroughly enjoyed myself. The people there are pretty laid back and not overly controlling like in some museums--They are friendly and understanding towards kids and groups with young people.

Mark Lefebvre

Inexpensive with some really nice pieces.

Tessa Janowski

Incredible art work and loved how it was easy to follow the map.

Ms Eaddy

There is so much to see and experience here. The staff is so knowledgeable and ready to help.

the everything bagel yt

This museum has a beautiful display of art. It was a pleasure to visit this place

Bonnijean Marley

Very nice

Roxanne Laurel

Love this place so much fantastic artwork.

Karl McCollester

Each time I go I'm impressed by both the quality of pieces as well as their presentation.

Kayla DeCant

Really fun and inexpensive to visit.

Glenn White

The Van Gogh exhibit was great!

はるかf

Best art museum that I've been to. I loved how each gallery was categorized.

D. Michael Brooks

Great museum.

Yiqian Jin

Good show good realistic painting. But one of your painting which insulted Chairman Mao made me very uncomfortable. He was a beloved leader of Chinese but drawn as a clown in your museum. Please don’t be political as you are just a museum of art.

Andy Fong

I was really surprised by how great this place was. Walking in it seemed like it might be a small local showcase kind of place. I wasn't expecting the massive galleries upstairs, full of incredible pieces. And while I was able to attend for free, you really can't beat the $10 admission fee.

Nadine Johnson

Paul Worrell

Because it's art and somebody's hobby or not.

LaLa G

Beautiful scenic art. Love coming here. Had the honor of bringing my grandbaby to play at the art and play outside and then we where able to come inside and enjoy the activities inside it was great !

Chris Mele

Very nice, open and has lots to see

Jesse Estry

Always a fun place to go. The current unique exhibit was inflatable and interactive which was neat

Tamarah Staschiak

The kid's art discovery area is such fun and has great hands-on activities to nurture creativity in several art forms. The Cross Hatch room has a great reading nook from the public library. So delighted these areas are free and open to the public.

Pamela Borawski

We are lucky to have such an amazing art museum in Columbia.

Diane Kuhn

We went on a tour given in French (for Bastille Day) and it was very informative and interesting. This is a great museum for a city the size of Columbia and I am very much looking forward to the Van Gogh exhibit later this year.

Ryan Radcliffe

First time being back after the renovations and I really like the new look. Went on the tour and had a wonderful time.

Lakesha Ramey

The atmosphere was soft and delicate, the art was extraordinary....enjoyed it must return soon so much to see
