REVIEWS OF Coastal Discovery Museum IN South Carolina

Elizabeth McLean

The museum is set on a beautiful property and would be a lovely spot for an event. I was hoping for a little more options for kids. Visiting the turtle was nice but there could have been more interactive options beyond walking the grounds and doing the scavenger hunt

Tony Baldwin

Wonderful place. Family run, quality family experience. Beautiful facility and grounds. From the museum to the discovery room for the kids to the critter meet and greet (you and the kids can even hold a live alligator!) And more, this is a great activity on the island. Highly recommend for all ages.

Mary Ruge

Staff was very friendly and helpful. It was interesting to look around.

Anna Fisher

This is a nice and inexpensive place to take your family.

Radio Man

This is a beautiful place. Learning the history behind this place and of Hilton head was an awesome experience. They do not ask for any payment to get in, just donations. The girls loved seeing the butterflies and the horses. Reading the history of the buildings and the gardens was a wonderful experience. They were also installing new art installations and they were so cool. They also had lots of local art and items to purchase inside. Thanks!

Michelle Bryan-Ennis

Great African American historic location

Stephanie P

Very nicely laid out with history of the area and art galleries before you walk outside into beautiful grounds and a boardwalk that leads through wetlands and oyster beds. The butterfly house was too early to see new ones. The bee and wasps structures were unique. The programs they offer to get on docent tour into nature look amazing and if I was in the area longer would definitely look into it. The grounds are amazing and just so peaceful of a day.

Tiffany Reed

Wonderful little park to stroll, relax, and enjoy the nature of the island.

Lynda Bialko

Super interesting. Great learning place. Our guide was born and raised on the island and was very knowledgeable.

ThatOneRandomGuy

Free access. Bring your camera and best wide-angle and telephoto lenses. There is a visitors house, pier, walking path, butterfly house, sculptures were displayed during our visit. Lots of photo ops. My phone camera does not do justice. Definitely will visit again.

Cindy Bascetta

This is a real treasure. The marsh walks are wonderful. Be sure to catch a special lecture or history forum. First rate exhibits.

Juliette Ewing

Wonderful museum. Lots of beautiful nature, walking trails and art on display. The children's room is lovely too. We took 5 children ages 8-17 and they all enjoyed it thoroughly.

George Smith

Eco Science - Art - Island History...A must visit while on the Island - we spent most of a beautiful January day touring the wonderful outdoor Sculpture Competition - with entries from as away as Maine...Check out their Web Site for special events and current activities - the Farmers Market is s favorite of both locals snd tourist...

Lovie Norman

Great seafood fest...wonderful mucis.

Monique Davis

We went to the Coastal Discovery Museum, for a trip with our special needs teens. This site is wheelchair accessible and has rest spots, even though the walks aren't long, but to give you a chance to enjoy nature. Leading into each site/exhibit there were information charts, to inform you on what was your next place of interest is.. The open butterfly exhibit is amazing; to see them flying around while you're walking in their habitat. The history artifacts on the inside are great eye openers to our past and ancestors. The staff were great and informative, they didn't mind sharing the information they knew. Wonderful experience, would love to go again, with my own children.

Veronica White

Great historical site!

Satyendra Sengar

Thank you for all your hard work at seafood fest

Eve Greiner

The grounds of this historic museum are lovingly cared for. Trees are labeled with their species. Some of these very tall trees must be well over a hundred years old. Lots of Spanish moss swaying in the breezes. There's also a large pavilion for meetings. Just a great place to get information about the Low Country region.

Rocktown Guide

Just a great family place to spend a few hours. Unfortunately we visited during a cold snap and much of the wildlife and flora were not visible. But the kids did still enjoy the scavenger hunt, which I admit we rushed through a bit because of the weather. Overall it was enjoyable; educational and beautiful.

Ashley Cundiff

Great place for kids and adults. Indoor and outdoor activities and picture spots. The gift shop is cute and it's easy to get to. Free to walk around, they run on donations; I read that they appreciate $5 per adult.

Larry Brown

Quaint little museum. We went to it as part of a tour so didn't get to see it all. But looked like it packed a lot of history and culture. Definitely going back for more.

Kristen cooper-kucharik

So much fun, great for families

Carson Daniel

It free. Friendly. Information. Relaxing. Great for kids. Fun for couples. You can pay for more interactive activities but there is plenty to enjoy without extra charge.

Arthur Hurlburt

Great place to stop by. I enjoyed the farmers market that they have on Tuesday mornings. Not your typical farmers market, not much vegetables, but a lot of chic type stuff. I bought some sausage and some blueberries.

Brendan Roa

A nice place with a good combination of indoor and outdoor exhibits. If you're interested in the history of Hilton Head or the wildlife found on it, this is a great place to go.

Mike Kizis

Great resource to learn all about living in the low country! Lots of programs, exhibits and festival, various time of the year. Check their web site.

Jim Swink

Absolutely wonderful. Great quilt exhibit in main building. Beautiful grounds. Great place to learn about the island.

Richard Anderson

Good stopping point for families of all ages. A lot of educational opportunities inside and out.

Brent Presnell

Pretty neat museum set up in an old historic house from early 19th century. Different rooms show different aspect of Hilton Head Island from its history to the animal life. Free but the do desire donations. Also a gift shop

Leah Bergman

This is by far one of my favorite places to visit on HHI. You start out by learning about the local history in the museum, then take a nature walk around the grounds. You get to see lots of local vegetation and wildlife. The boardwalk over the marsh is awesome because you get to see thousands of tiny crabs and many birds. HHI has rich culture and history, which you may not be aware of unless you visit!

David Watts

We came to this museum to take a break from the beach. We enjoyed the exhibits and learning about Hilton Head history. We enjoyed the butterfly exhibit and the tour of the marsh.

Eugene Pelino

Beautiful area. Nice indoor museum. Small outdoor butterfly enclosure was nice. One mile path to walk around to see a variety of the area's nature with an abundance of signage to tell what you're looking at. Spanish Moss is awesome!

Chase Morris

Very informative place but make sure the weather is right it's mostly outdoors.

M Hibbs

I liked the history of the property and the displays that described said history. Nice trail that circles the property.

zeak Huffy

Kind of small but very fun and infromational. They have some cool things to see outside if you walked around to look. Fun fact I learned there: alligators and snakes don't live in marshes because it's to salty for them.

Charles King

Had a nice time at the Italian festival can't wait to explore the grounds and Museum more.

Renee Lino

It was a very nice self guided tour and a very nice museum with facts about the area and pictures and also it was free donations were accepted for upkeep of the grounds it also had a building next door to the museum that taught kids about the sea life and had a hands on for them. to touch and see, all in all a great little place to go see on your visit to Hilton Head...

Mark Craig

Great place to take a leisurely stroll through the grounds & learn about this historic area

Lynda McLain

An excellent day of discovery for you and the kids!! Welcoming open fields SURROUND you as to drive towards the museum and butterfly habitat. Wide-eyed children were handling reptile, chickens and a lop-earred bunny while district teachers studied how a bee thinks with a master bee keeper. We made honey comb candles, honey lip balm and tasted 4 different types of honey!! Yum!. Go alone or book a group. It was an enjoyable day of discovery on Hilton Head Island.

Kay Canon

This place was awesome! The kids learned so much and didn't even realize they were learning something at the time. The museum is inside and out. The staff were kind and helpful and very encouraging. I definitely recommend going here.

Sumedh Gupte

Great place to connect with nature and discover local plants, trees, birds...Do not miss this trip.

Kayla Williams

Nice museum and walking trail. Kids area was fun. They love having things they can touch and discover

Gale Horwath

Lovely place but make sure you wear your walking shoes

VC Gonzalez Guzga

Incredible in all the good ways! Its full of beauty and fun. There's a fun kids' room, gardens, walkways around the museum and the art is breathtaking. Great place to go with family.

Sharon Howard

The museum has a lot of history in it. I just didn't get a chance to walk the grounds. The tour was awesome. Being from Michigan, there are plenty places here in SC I haven't visited. But I would recommend the tour. The tour rides you around places in Hilton Head island I never existed.

ErosAoA

Very informative place! A lot to do for the little ones. Make sure you check their schedule. Not everything is open all the time. A great place to go though and the staff is great. Kids and also adult history buffs alike will like it. Their little bee exhibit is amazing as well!

Allen Barry

Great for all ages. Free if you don't get guided tour. Good way to spend an hour and a half or so

Dennis Brannon

Volunteer oriented gem; very accessible just off the causeway. Adults and kids alike can enjoy this.

John Porawski

Lots to do and see.

Sandra Garrett

Nice and very interesting. The history lesson was awesome!

Rajeev Saxena

Great place to spend a few hours with the family. The kids loved it. Wide open space with tons of things to keep the kids interested and engaged. A very low cost option. I would recommend this for any family or anyone with an interest in local history and environment.

Crissy B

The museum offered informative education and my kids loved the area catered to them as well as the scavenger hunt. They accept donations as there was no admission fee. The property is just gorgeous.

Matthew Nichols

Free local attraction. We took the do it yourself tour. Gives you a good history of the island.

Polly McCauley

Great for the whole family. Easy walking trails. Museum is wheel chair friendly.

Linda Osborne

Learned lots of history here.

Jennifer Walker

So much history and nature in this wonderful museum! Outdoor paths lead to a butterfly house, fiddler crabs, beehives, carnivorous plants(!) and much more.

Kay Hunter

Im an Alzheimer caregiver, so this place isn't far away from which he resides! He enjoys the outdoors! We have been here several times and on one trip we walked the mile trail and he was so overjoyed to see your two beautiful horses ! He said it brought back some happy memories when his Precious daughter was young !

Vickie Henry

Very interactive fo even small children.

Brian Ruck

Free! Plenty of walking trails, a butterfly enclosure, and a play museum inside. Art work and history also inside. Tuesdays in summer also include a farmers market. We donated money toward it but super pleased with quality.

Dylan Perez-Rubio

Not much to see, but it's free. The exhibits have many facts about the history of the island, but little to no interactivity. There are gardens and boardwalks going over the marsh outside. If you're lucky you may get to see wildlife. I got lucky and saw a hawk. All in all, you won't spend more than an hour here before getting bored.

Cheryl Meneely

The museum has lots of great artifacts and history. And the sell local honey. And there are a lot of other local items. And some days the men who weave the palm fronsare there. It is so great to see the History of Hilton Head Island Alive. GOD BLESS

Sam Larson

The museum is not really much of a thing. The grounds are largely mowed lawns, but easy to walk around. I saw an adorable lizard and enjoyed the trees.

Folke Boman

Great place to learn about early life on HHI.

Susan Callis

A natural gem in a sea of tourism. Donate accordingly please

Tiptup8

A fun bit of exploration

Cindy Groff

Always a must when visiting Hilton Head. Beautiful grounds. Great history and nature area. Knowledge staff. And don’t forget to visit the farmers market

Don Marshall

Free museum. Has history of the island. My favorite was the butterfly house.

Jolyn Bowler

The museum continues to evolve into a wonderful destination for both Islanders and visitors. I went recently to view the Camera Club Member Show..."Life in the Low country". I've lived on Hilton Head long enough to remember Honey Horn Plantation when it was a working farm. The museum has done the property justice. Again, a great place, destination for both visitors and residents.

trekky60

This is a great place to visit. We like nature, so we spent most of our time outside. Some of the Oaktree's are over 300 years old and covered with spanish moss. The number of different plants is very impressive and the butterfly exhibit is a beautiful part of the museum. On top of all, the visit was FREE.

Todd Massidda

Great place, I am glad we went there

cavac@4ctech .com

Place is nice, and staff is super friendly and helpful. Only downside was we didn't think there was a lot to see. Not much to read or learn. Nice walk. We didn't consider it a "waste of time", but we would not go back. Nothing objectionable about the place, just more of a relaxing place than a learning place.

Krystle Shutter

Went on a Sunday in September. Nice grounds just to walk. Nothing major going on but we enjoyed ourselves. Take your bug spray because we had those critters at us the whole time.

Mary Loete

Free but please donate. Great walking paths with interpretive signs.

Paul Smith

neat destination. History, science, and art all in one beautiful location.

William Joachim

Great place for the kids probably ages 4 and up for best experience but still good for kids of all ages.

Jason Cook

Took the Children to the alab open housectoday. They really enjoyed it and the staff was helpful and very knowledgeable.

Barbara Heimsch

The Coastal Discovery Museum is a great place for visitors and locals to learn about the history of the island and the environment that surrounds it. Lectures, classes, workshops, and more all available and reasonably priced, if not free. Beautiful grounds to wander, including boardwalks that take you out over the pluff mud to get a close up look at the creatures who live there. There are lovely self- guided trails that cover the grounds, including gardens, bee hives, and marsh tacky ponies.

vasquga30

Great place to take kids, explore wilderness and plants. Beautiful property on Hilton Head Island. Very affordable as well.

James Landis

A fun place to take the kids with lots to see and do. Most of the museum is outdoors so be prepared to walk!

True Patriot 09

Very fun and its free and educational.

Nancy Mulvaney

The Discovery Museum is our favorite place for tours and informational talks about Hilton Head Island. Especially the informational talk on nesting sea turtles. We adopt a nest every year to support their cause to protect the sea turtles. The butterfly and birding tours are especially nice!

Eddie Huey

Even though it was closed on Easter Sunday, I was able to walk the grounds and explore. Great little stop to learn more about low country.

Chelly Shushu

Interesting and great that it is a self guided tour.

Julia Wettrich

It's a pleasant and quiet place to visit.

Thomas Bratten

It's free to visit and well worth the short drive to see all this place has to offer. Inside you'll find a lot of informative, and awesome stuff. It's very laid back and at your own pace to wander through, and go outside and see the sights. Don't forget to go and see the gorgeous butterflies inside their enclosure!

Colin Higgins

Free to enter. Short trails. Beautiful trees. The exhibits were informative. There was a kids area with dress up options to keep the kids entertained. The piers were nice. Good for a rainy or sunny day.

Brad Goddard

You get what you pay for, and this place is basically free. The mosquitos were terrible USE BUGSPRAY! The gift shop is rediculous priced. Local grass baskets about 5x the price of Charleston.

Stan Smith

Was actually the Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival, not the Museum. Was a good time lots of varieties for both seafood and beer with live "old school" music....great time!

Hidden gem in Hilton Head where you don't need to spend money. They have a lot of interesting items, and marine creatures, in the museum. This place is free of charge. but they can use some donations. When it is too hot to go out, this is a good place to spend time and get informed of the area.

Highly recommend this place. Highly interactive with many things to see. You can see various wildlife during the about mile walk. There are also many things to read about history and local wildlife. There is no cost to get in and for 10 dollars you get to see and hold various wildlife such as baby alligators and snakes. Great place for a family outing!! Beautiful scenery and friendly staff!! Check out their website for special activities. We love when Joe and the Gators come.

Ruth Young

We truly enjoyed this lovely center. We first went to the fresh market. Bit disappointed as only 1 vendor actually selling fresh food. It was the off season so we should have realized it would be this way. There were jewerly, fresh meat, soups , chips salsa vendors. The museum well done for the size. This is an excellent way to learn more about the history of Hilton Head. The gardens & grounds lively. We got to see oyster & clam beds. There is a butterfly habitat. We so loved the camellias. Nice gift shop area too. There are many books available here by local authors.

Sherri Lynn

Fun place, lots of local information as well as art from various artists. Grounds are well maintained and full of picture taking opportunities.

Thomas Hornada

The Coastal Discovery Museum is good place to spend a leisurely morning or afternoon on a self-guided tour of the coastal flats of southern South Carolina. Local artisans weave sea grass together with other natural materials, into baskets of beautifully intricate designs and shapes. While you'd love to have one in your home, be prepared to pay top dollar. Displays of wild birds and other animals, as well as, informative pictures and frescoes, decorate the museums interior. Access to an outdoor garden was prohibited due to inclement.

Pedro Rodriguez

Great place to learn a bit about the salt marshes in the lowcountry. Went as a chaperone on a school field trip and the kids had a blast

Eric Thompson

Beautiful setting..

Priscilla Loeben

The best place to visit on Hilton Head Island. Full of nature, history and culture.

We really enjoyed visiting here. So much to see inside and out. Especially enjoyed walking down the piers to the marsh. The butterfly sanctuary puts the icing on the cake.

Zachary Hammond

The Farmer's Market on Tuesdays has a smaller selection (because we probably went in the off season), but they have a great stand for coffee, a few bakeries, and a few farm stands. The grounds are gorgeous and the museum and trail are interesting for all ages.

Jose Casey

This piece of property, leased by the Town of Hilton Head for $1, is a prime example of a coastal community trying to keep their ecosystem intact by preventing over development. It is a wonderful sanctuary of a variety of native, precious creatures and a peaceful haven in the middle of an amazing Sea Island. Kudos to Mayor McCann and the Town Council for continuing to support and promote this ancient, historic site.

Courtney Barnett

Wonderful place. My kids loved it. Can’t beat the price!

Martha Tolmie

The coastal museum has several buildings and points of interest that are all free. The Gullah tour is very informative and well worth the price. Gives history of the island and how the Gullah people came into being.
