REVIEWS OF Mt Hood Cultural Center & Museum IN Oregon

Its ok. They have a free museum to walk through, but the staff are very aggressive about .aking donations. Up to the point that they told us you have to make a donation to see the museum. So is it really free if the staff are harassing guests for money right when you walk in the door, I dont know but enjoy and know. My kido loved playing with the gient magnetic rock in the museum.

Hidden gem! Stop in when you are in Government Camp! Went up there to see the snow and so glad we stopped in!

Fun museum of the history of the region. Great iron work displays, local ski clubs stuff, history of mountain rescue stuff. Very well organized and labeled. We spent about an hour to see all the exhibits. They do ask yo to leave at 4:30 pm so they can close the doors by 5 pm

If Mt Hood history is your passion the Mt Hood Cultural Center & Museum is the place for you! There is something for everyone who loves mountains, snowboarding, ski history, military history, US history, local history and anyone interested in Mt Hood's incredible link to the great migration West! There is a great deal of exhibits throughout the museuem that showcase the photographers of Mount Hood's past.Other exhibits include a pair of the oldest known modern twin tip skis from the 1930's! Add to that snowboards dating back decades, mountaineering equipment brought from Europe in the late 1800's and Early 20th century, military operation dating from WWII, programs from President Franklin Roosevelt's "New Deal" and I guarantee all US and Mount Hood history enthusiasts will be blown away by the rich stories this majestic mountain and her surrounding communities have had and still offer! Checkout their website for events such as the "Ski The Glade" a historical event that is known as a "Living History Ski Tour"! There are regular oral history events at the museum and there is always a friendly curator to at the museum to share the history of Mt Hood with you. Highly recommend for families!

It's not huge, but it is focused on all things Mt. Hood and its environs. It also has the most abundant offering of Oregon travel information I've seen anywhere.

A beautiful, informative stop to make on your next visit to Mount Hood. Loved their history of skiing exhibit, and the knowledge their volunteers have about the history of Wy'East is amazing.

I enjoyed the gifts available as well as the museum upstairs. It's interesting to see some of the tools mountain climbers and skiers used 100 years ago! The young lady at the front desk was very good at directing me to maps of kid-friendly hikes on the mountain as well. Loved it!

We learned so much about the local history and how the WPA/CCC helped build so much of the roads, parks and buildings still in use. Also about how skiers from ski patrols helped the mitary in WWII, then went on to found many of the ski resorts we know & love. The book about Barlow Road, a lesser known part of Oregon Trail history can be purchased here. Don't miss this place!

Mike Standing

Nice place. I think the people working there wanted to sell us some items at the gift store.

Lovely low key museum touting everything from turn of the century fire lookout relics to one of the first Burton snowboards. Some wonderful historical pieces detailing the development of the CCC and Mt Hood history in general. If you love museums, learning about Oregon or just checking out new things. There's a small gift area with the usual wares: postcards, branded apparel and some art prints. They also have brochures, maps and local events information. Looks like there is a coffee station inside but it wasn't active when we visited. Postings on the activities board indicate local authors will present here. Friendly staff and don't miss the donation box on your way out!

Government Camp has always been an intriguing place, but I didn't know much about its history until the cultural center opened up. My father (now 86) grew up skiing, working (forestry), and playing (cabins) here, so it really tugged on our heartstrings. Don't miss the vintage ski gear, USFS displays, and fun homestead/cabin information! Do donate! No admission fee, but they need donations to keep going!

Mike Morauske

This is a nice place to visit. I would not go here as a destination, but if you are looking for some history of the area and are looking for a jumping off point, this would be a good place. They operate off of donations (no charge). Probably the highlight is that there is the remains of an asteroid for show as well!

Cool museum that has interesting artifacts about skiing. A little small, but a good stop if bored.

We went in just for the visitor center, mostly to buy a forest pass and ask a question or too. We didn't catch her name, but a lady with curly red hair was so helpful with our backpacking questions! She got out the maps, the info papers, and told us her personal experiences. Great customer service!
