This is a hidden gem of the Dalles. If you live in this town you should know its history and this is the perfect place to learn it. There are Native American artifacts and photos, settlers' artifacts, original buildings, real covered wagons and carriages, and a friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgable staff.

This is a fun little museum tucked up where nobody notices it. up back behind in the center of housing in The Dalles is this cool fort museum that you otherwise wouldn't notice next to the colonial architecture and 1950s houses. There's a lot of good history here, though it is a bit pricey the cost to go to maintain the grounds and keep the museum running. You can picnic on the lawns and it's a great way to pick up points for Pokemon and other like games.

Diego Espinoza

This is a piece of Oregon History that you have to see. The folks who give you the tour are local and know all the history and they are informative. It is a welcome break from camping or wind surfing. If you see the home and the Fort Dalles Museum you get a sense of what it meant to be a pioneer, where you did not have Walmart or Safeway down the road. This was really real. Excellent tour and by the way if you are military and military service dependent it is free to get in , but make a donation.

Enjoyed visiting. Some interesting antique items and old photos in the house, and antique carriages, hearses, and other things in the building out back. The latter building is to be remodeled or replaced as I understand it, which might give better opportunity to view those vehicles at a later time. Across the street is the largest Log Cabin I have visited, with really impressive size rooms. Volunteers were present to answer questions.

Rare gem. Real fun to visit. Some unique exhibits.

This museum (with friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff) gives insight into daily life in Oregon during the mid 1800s to the early 20th century. It's not a fort in the typical sense (no walls, cannon, etc.). But rather, two houses, a barn, sheds, tools, etc., actually used by army officers living at the fort, and an area farming family. The museum is great for history buffs, kids, and families alike.

Berniece Harlan

Very informative.

Bryan Hermans

As far as Pacific Northwest history goes, this is an old fort. Remnants survive as a free outdoor and pay indoor museum. The modern city of the Dalles has grown all around it making it seem at first to be a park. What surprised me is how high above the river the military built it. It commands a good view of the Columbia River corridor. The Oregon Trail ended at the Dalles and in time US military presence came in to support it.
