REVIEWS OF Flavel House Museum IN Oregon

Jack Hillman

Beautiful Victorian style house built in the late 1800’s. It is in superb shape and they let you actually go through most of the rooms. There is a great introductory movie that tells of the owner and his life and then goes on to discuss the history of the house

Carmen Meyers

Interesting history!

Beth Kuhn

Loved the beautiful building and the wonderful guides. Good movie too!

Lucas Grams

If you appreciate historic preservation, this is well worth your time

The place is a historic gem, if your into historic victorian mansions you'll love this place, Oh and you can see it in the movie; "The Goonies"

Dick Heuschkel

Interesting.

Steven Humphries

Very nice to see the old history

Russ Roush

Absolutely beautiful house filled with history. If they had a veteran discount, it would have been 5 stars.

Daniel Szabo

Neat place

Johanna Perkins

This Museum is a must for west coast history. Be sure to spend time in the Carriage House first. The trees are amazing! The lives of the owner/builder's family are documented in the home, letters, a movie and the land.

Adam Waymouth

You buy tickets in the guest house, then walk to the main house on the other street. I found asking questions to the staff was really helpful in understanding what is original and what isn't or reacquired later from the family. Only the first two floors are open, but they have pics of the higher floors. Overall, I found the experience quite interesting.

S.P. Dudley

Such a gem with old world charm. Definitely one of the better museums in Astoria to stop off at. Be sure to start at the carriage house.

Bonnie Fischer

A beautiful and well maintained Victorian home. I loved visiting it. There was a short movie at the beginning of the tour giving the history of the home and area which was precise and interesting. The tour of the home was self guided, but the Docent in the house was knowledgeable and helpful. If you love things from this era, you'll love this museum.

Misty Newton

Absolutely loved walking through this old piece of history. A must do.

Rosemary Chandler

Well done, great information, very helpful staff.

kahanu kahoonei

Great experience. Glad we could make time to stop in for the video presentation and self guided tour.

Damon Starnes

Really interesting

Janet Pogue

An incredible step back in time. This beautiful old home belonged to a Sea Captain and his family. The old fixtures and massive wood trims are spectacular. The ceilings are soooo tall and the windows are lovely. A fireplace in every room provided heat in the winter.

Holly Nelson

A wonderful look back in time

Rosie Jones

I really like touring old houses but I was a little disappointed in this visit. The Flavel family seem to have been very important to the history of Astoria, and they seem to be a very respectable family. It makes you appreciate the era in which success was respected rather than condemned. But the whole house wasn’t open to view, and there was a woman lurking around making sure no one did anything they were supposed to. It kind of ruined the fun, and I get why they do it, but it wasn’t a welcoming atmosphere in my opinion.

Brandy Washington

They we're very welcoming it's worth visiting while in Astoria.

Nate Purscelley

Really cool self-guided tour. A fun experience.

Ksenia Obolenskaya

Highly recommend to visit!

Edward Grover

Amazing history and very helpful staff. Younger children probably wont be very interested in this attraction. If you like history you will love to see this

Nathan Barnett

I was a little hesitant, but it was awesome. They still have a lot of the original furniture inside, cool architecture and little plaques with interesting bits of history everywhere. Much more than a family history - it really let's you imagine Astoria over 100 years ago. Spend your time reading everything and it will take a while to make it through. Well worth a few bucks.

Leslie DeBord

Loved the house. The staff was helpful and answered questions, even recommended additional reading regarding the house and family.

Erin Tidwell

Staff is super nice and the home itself has interesting history behind it. Quaint little stop in Astoria.

Susan Reynolds

Beautiful, well preserved Victorian house. Watch the film because it is a self- guided tour which doesn't include the 3rd floor.

Rog H.

An amazing beautiful building. Historic and stunning. A must see if you're in Astoria.

Kristina Waggoner

Love love love all the woodwork and inlaid floors!

Jeanine Barker

The house is high, beautiful woodwork, built ins and furniture.

Nick Wyatt

Loved the self guided tour

Sam Gohl

Super cool relic of the past! Decently priced and it has a small collection of history in the building you but your tickets. The house was giant, but make sure you pay attention to the attendants, they will yell at you.

Lenise Holmes

Highly recommend if you visit Astoria!

Pyramid Rebelia

Highly would recommend. The place is stunning and they also have fun things for kids to do if the aren't fully interested at looking at things. If you go in April like I did they hide one thing that is not from the same era in each room.

Jadzia Jula

This place is amazing. We were searching all day for something fun to do and this was so much fun and it was not expensive at all. I loved seeing all things from back then. Everyone there was so nice and you can even go in the rooms and see the bathrooms and cool things like that. You even get to watch a free movie (you dont have to buy a pass to watch the movie) that is very nice to watch about the history of him and the town. You should check it out.

Robert Crosland

Really cool old house that belonged to a ship captain that was one of the first to settle in Astoria. Very interesting history and they still have alot of the original artifacts belonging to the flavels. Must see!

Sherri Cartwright

Beautiful Queen Anne. Amazing large rooms. Decor outstanding. So worth a visit!

Jill Arlow

Wonderful look at history but entire house is not open for viewing.

Very cool historical place. The staff was very friendly, informative and entertaining.

Lloyd Warren

This place was way cool. And the tree out in the yard was phenomenal

Dave Brandman

Victorian mansion belonging to 19th century shipping magnate in the Columbia River Valley. House had been restored and is filled with period furniture of the time. Tells his story and that. Of his family in Astoria.

Jan Dozier-Easterbrook

We really enjoyed the Flavel House and learning the history of the family and life in early Astoria

Brendan C

Great historical house! If you've been to Pittock Mansion in Portland, OR then expect a similar experience of self-guided tour. The plaques throughout the house are informative and the decorations are awesome. The house itself has been well preserved and maintained, giving great insight to the life of Captain Flavel and his family. There are some nice touches like music playing from the living room where the piano and violin are. Of note, photography IS allowed, just no flash. As the building is a touch dim, you may want to bring a tripod for your SLR camera to ensure it can get a nice long exposure. Also, there is a 'hands on' room for kids to see what kind of things young children did to keep occupied during the time period (mid to late 1800s). You should plan on arriving before 3:30PM, as that is when tickets sales are stopped. We arrived around 3:20PM, the gentleman at the carriage house (where the tickets are sold) mentioned we would need to be at the house by 3:30PM or else we may not be allowed in. We arrived at the house at 3:25PM and the lady was a touch grumpy about us entering late, mentioning we may not have enough time to properly view the house before closing at 4:00PM. I would say approximately 30 minutes for casual viewers is enough time to sufficiently view and appreciate the house, though enthusiasts might want to plan on a longer visit. All in all an enjoyable place to visit!

Beverly Bates

Went to see the building..it was big and cool. Didn't have a chance to go in and look around

Scott Foss

Awesome piece of history!

Cody Branum

A great look into the past. Even the kids enjoyed it.

Lil Rodriguez

Beautifully conserved

Alicia Brown

My favorite tour to take in Astoria. Buy the 3 pack museum tour, too, and go to the Oregon Film Museum across the street in the old jail (goonies fans I am looking at you).

Bradley H

Really interesting and not expensive too

CHRISTINA Monson

Beautiful piece of history

Nan Van

Interesting look at how upper class, wealthy victorians lived. There is a short film in the carriage house prior to the tour of the house.

Kari Hutchison

Beautiful. Worth the $5 price to tour. We had a great time exploring the house. The docent was friendly and helpful.

Crystal R. Martin

Very cool historical place in Astoria. Affordable and the ticket fees go towards conservation. The tour attendant was personable and knowledgable. A really cool walk through.

Josephine Dally

The Flavel House Museum is a must see if you are coming to Astoria and love history. Its rich history and story shed light on the days in which it was built. A beautiful home and a breathtaking garden/property.

Don Disbrow

Great place

Heather Knight

This place is so well-preserved and fun to visit to get a taste of what it was like in Astoria during the 1800s. Definitely worth a visit. I recommend getting the three museum pass for $12, it gets you into the Oregon Film Museum, the Flavel House and the Heritage Museum down the street a few blocks. 100% worth it. You'll come away knowing more about the area.

Justine Lecerf

Absolutely amazing. Stunning house. Perfectly preserved. Been to some well known castles in central Europe and I would say this place knocks them out of the park. So much detail. Ive never seen doors so big or ceilings that high in a private home. Would highly recommend. Bonus the tree outside is one of the largest Ive ever seen.

Sylvia Drill

Such a lovely building beautifully curated. I had the pleasure of visiting with someone who grew up in Astoria and told stories of how the Flavell House had transformed over the years. I'm a little disappointed that the dining room had been altered some but the experience was over all satisfying and extraordinary.

Marguerite Timmons

Lovely old house, we went there for their Christmas Tea, and the whole experience was lovely. Bathroom and giftshop are in a separate building on the grounds

Nice historical site

Elise Bushared

A nice self guided tour of a beautiful historic home. We spent around 30-40min and read most of the information plaques. A nice activity that won't take up a huge portion of your time in Astoria.

Nancy Parent

Amazing that a museum assoc in a relatively small community can maintain and show such a property is amazing.

Ted Jeffery

Great house, great construction

Sandy Sund

Holiday tradition to have Plum Pudding and Tea in the dining room. The house is wonderfully preserved with knowledgeable tour guides. Great visit.

Tim Howie

Excellent insightful tour of two beautiful buildings.

Timothy Dreyer

Amazing old mansion for one of Astoria's finding figures. Beautiful home and land. Two deer showed up in the yard while we were there too.

Wauna Credit Union

Be sure to watch the movie on the Flavels in the carriage house BEFORE you tour the house. It offers a good deal of context. Very nice museum.

Sue Byrum

The house was decorated with furniture that was appropriate for the time it was the family's residence. They did a great job explaining the displays.

Steve Huffman

Nice historic place to visit!

Katie H

I was looking for things to do for my birthday one year and we found this place. Loads of fun to go in and walk around to see. Lots of interesting tid bits and items to check out. A lot of good Oregon history in the house as well.

Rae Botsford

Love love love the history!

Kurtis Brown

If you appreciate woodwork and turn of the century craftsmanship and design this place is a real treat. Self guided tour but there are knowledgeable staff more than willing to relay the history of the place and the people who lived there. A very nice way to spend an hour or so.

Ford 3316

WOW, Very cool historical building, I am glad they persevered it and opened it up to the public. However, the lady working there was very rude. We walked in at 3:35pm. She said" Didn't you see the sigh that said no ticket sold after 3:30"? I said "yes, and we bought our tickets at 3:25pm". She said " well I am going to have to have a talk to **** for selling tickets so close to 3:30". Then she said " Well you better hurry up because I am shutting the doors at 4:00". At 3:45 after we finished I said to her" See, we had plenty of time". She said " Well I am still made at you guys". WOW we were all just totally shocked and amazed that she could be so rude. FYI, even though they say 3:30 last call, make sure you get there at 3:00 so you don't get grumpy pants.

Karen Glenn

Beautiful house, nice to see original furniture, fixtures and landscaping

Alita Beach

Such a beautiful house!! So glad they saved it. Bummer you cant go to the highest floor though.

James Allen

Beautiful experience and wonderful aesthetic!

Barbara Highfield

We are local and go here regularly. Fun games for kids, history and gorgeous architecture

Ron Vollo

Furnished turn of the century mansion. Well maintained. Interesting original inhabitants.

Bill Troiano

Very Charming Victorian Mansion and fun to go through. They have a nice Visitor Center in the carriage house and show a very good movie telling the history of the original owner and the house.

Nick Tegge

Spooky from the outside. I didn't get a chance to do the tour. Maybe next time. Architecturally fascinating though. Definitely a more authentic looking haunted house that the Winchester, that's for sure.

Zachary Williams

Fun museum! Has a penny pressing machine inside!

Joan Lynch

I went there today, and I really enjoyed it. The house was beautiful, but realistically portrayed as the leading lady of its time. Built for a sea captain and his very young wife, the self-guided tour starts with a film in an adjoining house, probably the maid and butlers quarters. Then you enter the main house as if you are a guest. It is painstakingly decorated and shows very well.

Steve Miller

History of Astoria by the Flavell family early on...must see to have any real understanding of Astoria...

Jamie Gatlin

Loved this place. So much attention to detail

Jason Persiani

Most interesting and inivavative building to see based on the time period it was built

Stephen L Manske

Impressed with it's presentation

Mary O'Neal

Beautiful home. The front porch is the location where "The Goonies" was shot.

Daniel Anderson

Beautiful house, cool, history. I knew nothing of this place before we came across it while going to the Oregon Film Museum, but I'm glad we stopped in here as well.

Aub Driver

Beautiful and grand old historical home. Worth the price of admission to experience.

Great photo moment if you like the Goonies!

Kellie Musgrove

Incredible history of Astoria and a beautiful house that I'm glad was not torn down.

Judy Henderson

Nice to see how a founder of Astoria lived. A gorgeous property full of history!

Dave

This house is amazing, really feels like you went back in time. The architecture of this place was really thought out and built with the highest quality of materials at the time. This place had indoor plumbing, we have been to other places like this and have never seen that. Captain Flavel had himself one beautiful place built. This is a must see if you are in the area.

Shannon Stark

Beautiful, historical landmark in Astoria. I enjoyed learning all about the Flavel Family.

Phyllis Ross

Early morning rain prompted our visit and we were glad we chose to go. There is a short film introducing the home and it's history. The house is grand and very well maintained. Guides are available to answer questions, but mostly it's a self guided tour where you can linger if you wish. We liked it and felt is was a nice introduction to Astoria's past.

Athena Santos

Great self guided tours. Lots of information about the Flavel family and Asroria history.

Shane Draganiuk

The house is as original as they can get it. Well maintained and very interesting history

Olivier Jullian

Beautifully preserved, it's a great example of early century architecture.

Jonathan G

I went there back in 2013 or 2014 i think, with my ex wife and our 3 kids. I absolutely love this place. I am dying to go back again someday. I love love LOVE it! We all had a great time, price was beyond reasonable. If you're a history buff, you'll deeply enjoy it as well.

Lorelie Beckwith

So cool

David Stone

Very cool mansion home built by the richest man in Astoria 130 years ago. Nicely preserved and presented. Very reasonable admissions fee of $6 a person. Self-guided tour, but there are staff on hand to tell you more about the home and the customs of the time. A very interesting way to spend 2 hours. Not an experience you will soon forget. Plus-the home was the "museum" Mikey's Dad worked at in the Goonies when they were riding their bikes on the way to their adventure and the dad was taking down the flag outside!

Mikayla Rethati

Family friendly, beautiful grounds and super informative staff!

Linda Bunyan

Fantastic and docents are fine spirited people!

Vanessa Hutcheson

This is a really cool house. For as large as it is, it is very modestly decorated. The history of the place is amazing to learn about. Well worth the visit.

Don Schatzel

Great history of the area a must see

Paul Reynolds

Beautiful house, very big, but some odd shaped rooms.

Sherry Palmer

Fascinating step back into history. Beautifully preserved home of wealthy Astoria businessman built in 1800s.

barbara bracke

Thank you for letting people tour this wonderful home. I appreciated the video beforehand about the family history. I love old woodwork and took quite a few pictures of the intricate patterns of the wood. The entire house has treasures in every room. I will definitely go again!

Jennifer Klump

Great old house. You can go into each room. The docent knows much about the history.

Steven Smith

I'm glad I went, but it was about what I expected. If you have toured turn of the century houses, this fits that description. Nonetheless, it is one of the better ones that I've seen. (Why only a 3? If a place meets my expectations, it gets a 3. Hopefully this makes my reviews more useful.)

Daniel Bixler

Very pretty , could be curated more

rick boyd

Beautiful old building

Debra Moore

Fun & interesting to see

Brianne W

I love this museum! Absolutely gorgeous inside! The people there were so great about telling you all about the house and answering any questions you have. Loved the experience!

createaface

What a remarkable historical site to visit! You need time and a video camera to get in the full visit. You can have a guide or do it yourself. It's amazingly beautiful with landscape and the house & decor. I need to visit a second time in order to obtain the full visit. You watch the video prior to the tour. The cost is decent. I wouldn't recommend it foe small kids or disabled people. Too many stairs and no elevator access to see the floors and rooms. A child of 12+ would probably appreciate the tour. Anyone else under that age may be bored and not allow you to experience the full potential visit. Parking is easy to find on the streets and surrounding neighborhood. I had fun!

Erich Bruckner

Amazing look back in time. So glad it was saved and is open to the public. An important part of Astoria history well worth seeing.

Erika Hurd

Wonderful history here! Self-guided tour leads you through a beautiful Victorian home with the finest woodwork and details. Very affordable entry price and a great way to spend an afternoon.

Casey Rummel

If you're into period pieces, architecture, and history, this place is definitely worth a visit

Mike Schaaf

Great history lesson

Mema Manager

It was so beautiful. The history was fascinating. It was also inexpensive. Please visit and help support this historical landmark, it's worth it.

Ang Saki

This place is amazing , such beautiful craftsman ship. Yes there is no elevators the house was built in 1885 the stairs case is amazing highly recommend

Chris Woodard

Beautiful home that shows how homes used to be built! The details are amazing. The history is enlightening and you can walk through the entire home at your pace and get a feel for how the other side lives during that time period.

Fei stetzwa

Historic preservation...thank you. We are losing too much of our history in exchange for Twitter fluff. Live your real life and see Flavel's influence on PNW.

Carolyn Fleming

Everything is so exciting to look at in this museum. The items that date back to the 1800's are fascinating.
