This place is a feast for the eyes if you appreciate carousels and their history. Gorgeous carvings abound and you can even ride on the carousel. There's a very small gift shop. Parking was outside and easily accessed. Steps leading up to the building... not sure if there were ramps.
What a treat is was to visit the Merry-Go-Round Museum in Sandusky, OH. All of the animals on display were absolutely beautiful and their history was very interesting to learn. We also enjoyed a ride on the Merry-Go-Round located in the center of the museum. Very family friendly!!
Had a great experience. Fun for all ages
A delight for adults and kids alike! This museum is a treasure. From the carousel horses to the history it is magical. One ride on the carousel is included with admission, additional rides are $1 (and worth every penny). The volunteers are kind and knowledgeable, but know that it may mean a bit of a wait as sometimes 1 volunteer is reponsible for the gift shop, admissions, carousel operations and questions. Don't miss out on the 6 etching plates where kids of all ages can make a free picture or 6 to take with.
Fun time
Kid-friendly, lots to see and photograph, pleasant staff.
Loved it
Well worth the visit. Entrance is free, but rides are $1 per person. The carved animals are gorgeous.
This is a really charming museum for the family to enjoy. Kids can collect rubbings of plates depicting carosel restoration. Older kids and adults can read about the history, construction, and restoration of carosels while viewing examples on display. There is a sizable collection of antique animals. Everyone who visits gets to ride the large merry-go-round at the center. Collectables for carosel fans in the gift shop. Bathrooms and water fountains available. Proceeds help support the restoration of antique carosels. Expect to spend about an hour here.
Love it!! Had a tour and learned some history and rode the Merry Go Round!! Awesome!!!
Fun for kids. Only one merry go round
If you're interested in carrosels this is the place. It is a working museum in that they make and repair the carrosel animals for others around the country. The attendant was very knowledgeable and more than happy to share. Interesting and a lot of fun.
Amazing place! Learned a lot about the history of Merry Go Rounds. Wonderful tour, great displays and fun environment. A must if near Sandusky!
Loved it it is clear this is a labor of love and clearly shows the Craftsmen and women that put their heart and soul into these Restorations
Went to a fund raiser there. Lovely gifts a ride in the Merry go Round fun!!
I love this place! I've been wanting to go her for years & finally went today! First time riding a carousel! (I'm 18
Awesome place with a lot of cool history ! Go and ride the Merry-Go-Round !!
Nice place to visit. Very nostalgic. My family really enjoyed our time. Handicap Ramp around the back.
Very interesting and very informative
Amazing little building full of delight and happiness.
Very cool experience and beautiful exhibits!!! It's something definitely worth it and fun for something different to do~don't miss it!!
Fantastic and informative tour. Carousel operator could be a "carney" reincarnated. Not a big place but worth a vidit.
The merry go round was wicked fast
Beautiful carvings + amazing and knowlagable staff = great visit
Such a fun and magical place to visit. The full size carousel sits front and center to the museum with exhibits all around showing the history and making of a carousel.
It is amazing how much history we have through fun rides
The staff was very friendly. Walking though and seeing the history of all the horses was very cool.
Definitely worth a visit when in sandusky
I found this museum very interesting and the people were so nice.
Very nice
I did not enter the museum. I was just there to smash pennies in the penny machine.
I like the Merry-Go-Round animals & wondered how they were made. The carvers will talk with you & answer any questions that you may have, while they are carving. Very pleasant people! This is a very nice place & it has a Merry-Go-Round inside that they give the patrons a ride token with each paid admission. There is a 250 lb weight limit, in order to ride. I encourage kids of all ages, to take time out for a visit.
Great place to take your kids :)
Cute place to stop. Takes about an hour and you'll see what is in the brochure. A ride on the old Merry-go-round is included in price. Nice to see craftsmanship put into the animals.
Awsome will go back
Neat little museum. Some pretty carousel horses here.
Friendly staff. Fair price. Its laid out kinda weird. Not like a typical museum. Just very open, so it's easy to run through very quickly. It needs more hands on activities for kids. Theres to much display and reading. Like maybe some penny rides or something.
They carve horses at the museum for amusement parks and private collectors. They operate a merry_go_round you can ride.
Awesome!
Great place to take friends and family.
I love this place the history is just amazing hidden gem its located in downtown sandusky ohio 301 Jackson street acrossed from the water front
Loved it. Lady working museum made the visit outstanding
Wonderful time. Great for my kids and me.
Awesome
Hours are completely incorrect. Tried to visit during posted hours. Sign on door said closed will return at 11. Which was 1 hr after posted opening time. At 1230 they were still closed despite hours info on website and phone recording. We asked around locally . We were told they only open 3 days a week now. Which three days. No one knew. We contacted them on Facebook said it was an unexpected closure. They did offer us tickets but we are leaving tomorrow. I would reccomend pre contacting them on Facebook to ensure they will be open before heading there
Just a merry go round and gift shop
Very neat museum. Beautiful pieces. Good for a short visit. Love the carousel ride.
Very cute and historic. A lot of information on merry go rounds. Small probably takes 45minute stop. Tickets reasonable and includes a merry go round ride. Great for kids, small activity for kids as well.
Great little place to visit with kids
I had my daughters' 1st birthday party here. All staff was excellent. Janet made the birthday party special she was awesome making sure everyone was able to ride the carousel safely. It was the perfect backdrop for a rainbow unicorn themed party. And not at all expensive for 50 guests to party.
Great price, friendly staff, and a carousel ride is included with your ticket! :)
Loved this place! Spent about 1 1/2-2 hours there looking around. The carousel ride was included in fee of museum. Enjoyed it a lot.
It's like a roadside attraction grew into a museum. Loads of interesting carvings. A fully functional merry-go-round is at the heart of this lovely place complete with Wurlitzer mechanical band.
Great museum with lots of information and the volunteers are great too.
A fun, quirky museum. The volunteer guides are great. And of course, getting to ride the carousel is great
Guess who can say they've been to the Merry-Go-Round Museum!?... I can!.. And so can you! You've got to check out this museum. It's a great place for all ages. There's even a working carousel inside that costs $1 to ride. You can learn about the history of the merry-go-round, the different types of carousels, see carousel animals that date back to the late 1800's, and watch pieces being restored.
Our 2 year old loved it, great place for a quick something to do for the kids
I have wanted to go here for years. I love Carousels, Carousel horses. The carving is a beautiful craft. I will ride a Merry-Go-Round anywhere I find one. Love to see historic carousels and how some are saved, restored. They are beautiful. This is in such a unique building for it with the rounded front. I live old architecture and history. I noticed on historical marker the name of Longaberger. Such a great man he was to help sponsor these markets of our great state historic places. Shame his unique basket building for company headquarters is abandoned after he died.
A great experience! Friendly staff. Learned a lot about the what it takes (imagination, carving, sculpting, time, energy & engineering) to bring this beloved ride to life. Will return for the installation of Rudy the Red Nose Reindeer.
Wonderful preservation of a fabulous time in many people's lives. Well curated, with knowledgeable and interested volunteers. Go - ride the merry-go-round!
Very cool exhibits on merry go round animals from all around the nation, in-house animal repair workshop, and a full size operating carousel (with organ) all in a historic building! I wish there was a bit more information on other aspects of merry go rounds, such as their mechanics, organs, and the fabled brass rings, but it's a great 45 minute visit just to see the carvings. Ticket includes a trip around the merry go round.
Wonderful time, brings back some wonderful memories. Great staff.. loved the ride on the Merry go round and took my grandpa who was 90.. handicap ramp to get in.
Always a great place to check out if you go to Sandusky, esp if you enjoy the history of the carousel, you can take a spin on the machine inside the museum. Reasonably priced and you can purchase tickets to win your very own carousel horse!
Very cool little gem in downtown Sandusky... I've been visiting the area for over 20 years & don't know how I missed this!
Great free museum, the merry go round is the best and only cost $2, hold on it's pretty fast!
Great place to take little kids and the young at heart and the merry go tound goes fast...gives a good ride opens March 20 with new exhibit....good guest stop anytime but especially when you need an active not passive activity...more interactive than a museum
Was fun learning the history of merry go rounds! Was really fun riding the indoor carousel! Thank you sandusky!
Great place to explore. While you're there make sure to ride the in-door merry-go-round.
What an awesome place! Staff was so kind and I felt so welcome!
Great experience for children to adults!!
It was a fun place to visit. Interesting history of the wood animals. Fun ride in the Merry go round(goes fast). We were there about 1hr.
Really interesting place for anyone interested in history or feeling like taking a trip down memory lane. The staff is very friendly and happy to share their knowledge and work. Plus you get to ride a merry-go-round.
A very cute museum rich in childhood memories! The guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. I was surprised at some of the history and stories. You learn something new everyday! What a treat to spend some time feeling nostalgic!
Interesting, colorful, history of the iconic American Merry-go-round.
Wonderful history and fun for all ages. You'll even see a craftsman making carousel horses.
This was our 2nd visit. First one was 3 years ago. This museum does a wonderful job of honoring the American Carousel Heritage. The exhibits allow for up close viewing. There is a wonderful carousel to ride. 5 stars in my book!
It's a small, well kept museum with beautiful carousel animals and a repair department. Interesting displays and a working merry go round inside.
I am a big fan of carousels and merry go rounds. I photograph them all over when travelling. This museum was fun to see to know the history and to see some restoration in progress. Small museum but you can still spend hours here. Staff are all fun and the gift shop is quaint.
Very cool. Good for about a 45 minute to an hour stop. Ride the old carousel, Its really neat and wonderful to see all this stuff preserved!
Great museum, very interesting...pay a little extra for the narrated tour.

Rainy day surprise!! Unique, informative and the carousel ride was awesome!!
Small but very nice. Enjoyed it very much.
The tour was short and sweet, staff is friendly and knowledgeable . The items in the museum are fantastic and take you back in time. Bonus you get to ride a merry go round, that believe it or not has some speed to it.
Very cool little museum. The kids and adults loved the working merry go round in the middle of the building. Lots of cool examples of the wood animals and even a cool open workshop to watch how they are made.
Great place to visit . Amazing to see see the history inside this building. Watch them repair and restore horse's.And End your day with a ride a carasal fun for all
Worth the visit and tour. Very knowledgeable staff about the history of carousels. The artwork in detail in their collection is pretty incredible
Loved it!! Great afternoon!! Well worth the money!
I had the best experience here. I went with my family we have 3 boys 6, 7, and 8. The woman at the cash register had so much information about the building and all the items on display. There was a carver working on a piece while we were there. It was fun for our whole family. The art work and craftsmanship on display was amazing. Planning to go back. This is a must see. This was the highlight of our trip to Ohio.
Wonderful whimsical museum
Makes you feel like a kid again! Some great history also.
A very enjoyable place! I never realized the craftsmanship and artistry before. Watching the woodcarvers was nice. Riding on the merry go round was something I haven't done in over 50 years!
Fair entrance fee, nice staff and amazing carved horses. My Granddaughter and I had a great time for $20, including a nice momento.
Very interesting
A wonderful place to visit if you love or have an appreciation of carousel horses merry-go-rounds and more. An easy visit oh an hour or two while traveling through Sandusky any day of the week. Especially fun if you later visit Cedar Point as it gives you a deeper appreciation for the history there and at other parks for the art that goes into these rides and their mounts.
This place was awesome. Lots of cool carvings and a merry go round ride.
Diamond in the rough. So so so glad we stumbled upon it
Good merry musem oknice work
Fun riding the carousel! Interesting to see the handi work of woodworkers!
I can't say enough good things about this place. Friendly staff to answer all your questions. Amazing collection with pieces from all manner of different times and places. A full size, operational merry-go-round that runs along side a real Wurlitzer. And they build a new horse, in house, every year; which they then give away at raffle. If you're in the area, make the stop.
Loved this place. Take the kids
Interesting to see
Ride a carousel. Look at every type of carved animal and creature you can imagine. Watch and talk with real carvers. Get a guided tour from a knowledgeable docent or just wander. Buy something from the nifty gift shop. All inside a unique round building that was our post office when I was young.
Doable in 1 hour but so full of history and beautiful carousel creatures. Plus you get to ride as well!
Loved my time here. The tour was fun and informational. That carousel ride alone is worth the trip
Great place to visit. Good for adults and children
Small but really cool kids liked it
What a wonderful place. Exhibits were gorgeous and the working carousel was magnificent. Our hosts were knowledgeable and gracious. This Is a real Sandusky hidden gem Which Gets OVERLOOKED.
Quaint little place to visit. Cute town also.

Lot of history
Riding the refurbished merry go round was worth the price admission.
We always enjoy the trip here.
The ride on the merry go round is worth the admission fee. The carved animals are exquisite and the history fascinating, a pleasant hour spent in what was formerly the post office.
Outstanding. The cute old couple that runs the show here are so passionate about the museum and items within. It’s contagious. Ask for the free tour.
A must visit for anyone going to Sandusky.
A gem in downtown Sandusky! Even our 14-year-old son enjoyed the tour.
This museum was really interesting and enjoyable. The host was so kind and she shared lots of neat facts of the merry-go-round world. Would definitely make this a visit if in Sandusky.
What a wonderful place to visit! The volunteer behind the counter was very friendly and knowledgeable. She looked up several carousels that we had known as children in other states. Our ride was the frosting on the cake!
Attended a private party. Merry-go-round operating. Exhibits interesting. Dining area set-up very nice with linen table cloths on round tables. Immensely enjoyed the time spent there.
Fun place to experience. Went with kids age 3-7 and they all had a good time, and there were little coloring stations set up for them. A ride on the carousel is included my 3 year old was a little scared with how fast it went but the other kids had fun.
Small nice museum with in 5-10 minutes of Cedar point, the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The only down side is they do not list on each merry go round piece where it came from, but still worth the time!
This is a unique place. Nice little museum with tons of old carousel horses, and a large carousel to ride. It goes over 9mph! Doesn't seem fast, until you realize you are fighting to stay on.
Very nice
Always enjoyed going there and taking company when they're visiting
Nice little museum with newer and antique carved art, old pictures and a carousel. Nice staff

It was a great experience to see the beautiful arts of the carousel horses. Extremely nice people. Very inexpensive for a family. Use AAA for our discount. The ride on the Carousel was fun.
Take the guided tour! Very interesting to learn about the history of Merry Go Rounds. A huge selection of hand carved animals. And a ride on a vintage merry go round is included in the admission.
Very fun riding the carousel
A very interesting place! Lots of history! The volunteers were all friendly and hospitable.
We took the grandkids and they enjoyed it.
One of my favorite places to visit when I'm town.
It had stuff. I can see someone liking this, and it probably would be a great place to take a family. It's also a nice place to take photos at as well. But I can't say I was really captivated by it. If you like carousels, you should go here.
large well done with many exhibits so plan to take your time here
The lady who gave the tour was amazing! She was kind, patient, and knowledgeable! It was amazing to learn about the building and the amount of work that goes into making an addition to a merry go round!
Loved it felt like a kid again
So nostalgic. If you enjoy carousels or just beautiful wood work this is definitely a place to visit. Affordable and a nice place to go if you are in the Sandusky area.
