A surprisingly nice little museum. Being a smaller town in a rural area, you might expect it to be a little crappy but it's not! Clean, well maintained, and some great exhibits if you're interested in how westward expansion played out in Ohio. When I was there, they also had a non-permanent Civil War exhibit on loan upstairs. If you're from the area or just driving through, definitely a place to check out if you're into history and learning.

This museum is worth a visit. We were especially impressed with the tour of the Putnam house. This was originally built at this location in the 1700s. They have done a wonderful job restoring and preserving the historic home.

Nice museum about the pioneers of Marietta and they're history of moving West. Handicap accessible

This is the museum that highlights the founding of the northwest territory, and the first colony of the United States of America. Carved from this territory, were 6 states now known collectively as the midwest. These states are Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnisota. In addition to the history of the NW territory, other topics such as native peoples, the town of Marietta, the prohibition of the slave trade as well as regional migration in and out of Appalachia are covered. The museum houses original structures from the founding as well as artifacts of interest. It is the site of the 1st Masonic lodge (founded in 1776 as a military lodge) meeting in the territory. This is still an active lodge which meets in town. I highly recommend visiting this museum. They have something for everyone and lots of unique things pertaining to the U.S. as a whole.

It is significant to Ohio history and our nation's history. The employees are friendly and helpful. They are proud of the historical importance of their museums and it is evident. The museum of the NW territory exhibits tell the story of the Ohio Company lead by Rufus Putnam in 1788 and the first permanent organized settlement of the territory.

C Mc

From the last time I was there they have taken down quite a few exhibits. I am upset at that fact unless they are using them in another museum.

Michael G

History enthusiasts dream! Located on exact site and original foundation of first settlement West of Ohio River. Putnams house contains wood from original stockade and museum has incredible historical documents and artifacts. Also an interesting exhibit relating to Appalachian migration to northern cities. There is a riverboat museum and pioneer cemetery and plus a many historical houses. Take a couple of days to explore the area.
