The Allen County Museum in Lima, Ohio is one of the Top 25 Museums in the United States and the only one in Ohio, one of the other top 25 museums is Henry Fords Museum. The Museum has so much to offer, from a Shay Locomotive in the building to a Childrens Discovery Center. A good tour through the museum will take over a hour, don't miss the John Dillenger display, a fine Gun collection and one of the best rock collections, students from Ohio State are required to identify different rocks in the collection as part of their studies. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday 1-5 pm, Saturday and Sunday 1-4 pm. Closed on Monday and some holidays. Oh, and be sure to visit the McDonnel and log hose next to the museum. There is a $3 charge to view the McDonnel house.

Excellent place to take children or grandchildren

Visited this Museum last weekend because we wanted to see the John Dillinger exhibit. we ended up staying much longer because there was so much to see. we had no idea. there are many antique cars, a steam train, military artifacts, taxidermy animals, a quilt exhibit, old furniture, model houses including one of Washington's Mount Vernon. we were very impressed. they don't even ask for money for admission, but we donated money anyway.

Robert Glenn

I was genuinely impressed. My girlfriend and I went in on a whim because we were in town for a wedding and it was amazing. Before we even got in we saw the old house on the property and the well-done children's garden. We walked in and realized the museum is free ($5 suggested donation). There is an area specifically designed for kids, but the rest of the museum is interesting enough the kids would enjoy it all. It really is a museum for all ages. There is an full sized train engine, military transport, carriage, and an iron lung you can stick your hands in. They have a full rock and mineral collection as well as a replica of a general store that you can walk through. They have old knives and swords and pistols and a model of George Washington's estate - Mt. Vernon. There is a cutting from what was once the largest apple tree in the US and some history on Johnny Appleseed who spend some time in the area. They also have models of some of the historical Lima houses. In general we had a great time walking around. It is not too big, but its way bigger than we thought it would be.

Wonderful place to take your family. My mother took me when I was a child and now I'm taking my niece's and my husband (who had never been there before). We loved it. Also check out the McDonald's house right beside the museum. There's the children's garden and library there too. Lima has so many hidden treasures. Take a look. It's great!

Located in Lima, the Allen Co. Museum is a great place to spend some time. Friendly staff and it seems the exhibits are always being added. The exhibits are well laid out as well. While you are there, take time to visit the MacDonell house as well as the Children's Garden, both located on the grounds.

We had this as part of the train ride from Springfield to Lima, and it was my favorite part. The John Dillinger exhibit was great as was the paleo indigenous exhibits. This is a tour that should be taken as its own as it is very educational and has a lot of Ohio history in one building. Don't miss the giant Shay locomotive in the basement (huge)!

Cute little museum right downtown. It has a little play area for kids. My daughter really liked playing there. Stop at the Children’s Garden after you’re done at the museum.

Danielle Halverson

A wonderful museum, lots of artifacts. This museum is worth another look. It has enough items to spend days on end walking around and still not seeing every thing. And don’t worry that the kids will be bored, there’s an enchanting children’s Garden outdoors. As well as a large area for children’s activities, including a recreation of a civil war era school and store. The kids can even grind real coffee beans. There’s antique toys their actually allowed to play with. Make sure you don’t miss the train displays and the amazing collection of things people have swallowed and had to have removed. It’s quite amazing. Have fun but make sure you check ahead for the hours of operation they are sadly a bit limited. Also visit the McDonald house next door, it’s also quite interesting. Enjoy these Limaland treasures.

Brian Fruchey

With a suggested donation of $5 this place is well worth the money and time spent there. I had my 8 and 5 year-old girls with me once afternoon this summer we were surprised when we heard them announce the museum would be closing in 15 minutes. We had been there since 1ish. That never became bored and needed to be sure that saw every inch of the museum. We actually had to rush through some areas. A real treasure for this area. Volunteers are knowledgeable and seem to love being there. Thank you for staffing this museum!

This is a great half-day fieldtrip. The museum is filled with exhibits related to local history. The staff will more than happily guide you around and teach you so much more than what the placards have to tell.

This is the Allen County Museum's 110 th year in existence and it is the only AMA accredited county museum in Ohio and one of only 24 AMA accredited county museums in the United States. They just received their fourth 10 year accreditation last year. They have fantastic collections related to Allen County's early discovery of oil as they had the world's largest producing oil field from 1890 until 1900 and they supplied the oil that lighted the 1892 and 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair except for those few exibiters who took a chance on using the new Edison electric lights. Many other exhibits related to the production of the highest quality steam locomotives.

Miles Conrad

My daughters favorite place in town besides Art Space Lima.. We visit at least three times a month.
