Fort Totten is a historical gem hidden away in North Dakota near the Spirit Lake Reservation of the Dakotah indians. Try to go on the guided tour for stories about the boarding school use of the fort.

We didn't know what to expect when we set out to find this site. We came away very happy we went. The fort is a work in progress but what they have in place is well worth the 6$ entry fee. The history of the fort is so varied but the buildings and exhibits are a wonderful window into it's past. Several of the buildings are closed but enough are open and each is interesting to go through. A boardwalk around the inside perimeter of complex made it easy to navigate. Some of the displays are rudimentary (photos taped to display boards) but that didn't take away from their value. The pictures of the Indian children who were sent there, along with their testimonies about their lives there, really brought their experiences to life. My husband (who is no history buff) said he enjoyed our visit here much more than he did our visit to the Alamo!

Great representation of not often enough remembered elemens of history

Surprised to find such an expansive property preserved as an historical site. The condition of preservation efforts though, was reflective of the ongoing disparity of funding to native peoples. Many of the other historical sites we visited in ND were obviously better capitalized and preserved.

This fort has a lot of its original buildings. There are several available to walk through. Additionally they have many items that were used at the fort on display. They discuss the time it was used as a military fort in the late 1800's to when it was used as a school for Native Americans and a place to care for those with TB. They also have a bed and breakfast where people can stay!

Costs too much and isn't very informational.

What an amazing place! My friends and I enjoyed every moment that we spent at the Totten Trail Inn! The decor and all the things to look at were just wonderful. Our hostess, Lisa, was warm and inviting and took such good care of us! Thank you so much for the great weekend we spent there!

Really nice place, close to Devils Lake. Great history. There's still a few buildings that need to be renovated but overall pretty cool. We stayed at the Inn on the fort property and that was super neat...lots of antiques or really good replicas. I would go again.
