REVIEWS OF Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site IN North Carolina

Sue Montana

Interesting historical information about a revolutionary war town.

Heather Jones

I love to bring my family here

Bethany Fields

Beautiful historic spot. Went for school field trip as a chaperone, stations were set up for the children to learn about stencil art, crime and punishment, and how to make a candle. I believe there was a gift shop of some sort, but it was closed and dark. Large grounds with picnic tables were nice for our bagged lunches. No one talked about the church and cemetery that were on the grounds but there were informative signs.

Louis Werder

Fantastic site. I was very surprised at how good it was and the quality of the museum. Mr. McKee, the site manager, and another volunteer were in period costume, gave a great tour, and provided a shooting demonstration. Well worth a visit to this hidden gem.

Rachel Fitzgerald

Wonderful place to visit!

Charlotte Wall

Beautifully situated along the Cape Fear River, the sight of both a colonial town and church, Brunswick Town is also important for its location as Fort Anderson where a battle was fought in the Civil War. The area is scenic, and fun to explore with picnic tables and and a visitors center.

What a hidden gem right in our backyard. I wish we had visited sooner. I think we've found a new weekend hangout.

Angelina Carlson

Really cool place would have given 5 but there was literally a sign in the ladies room stating they were out of paper towels due to budget cuts. These people need funding!!!!!

bls txi

This was a very interesting and varied location the town was a bit of a Beach Town while the Ford Anderson was rather impressive and not very much spoken of in any history class that I've ever taken it was great to learn about how they set it up what happened there and how they're doing their best to commemorate it and respect it

Valerie Richards

A must-see for anyone into local history

Cynthia Reimer

Interesting artifacts and displays in the visitors center explain the short history of Brunswick Town and of Ft. Anderson which was built on the site during the Civil War. Our favorite — a big ceramic flushing toilet! Who knew such a luxury was available at that time in history? It’s free and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable.

Michael Chesson

Amazing place! Nice visitor center, friendly staff, great exhibits. Best of all is outside, an old Anglican Church, thick walls, a number of grave stones, but never completed. Wonderful walk around the old town site, which was once prosperous and growing, but supplanted by Wilmington.

Ruby Holmes

Great guided tour by Nick, Jim, Olivia, and Drew!

John Ahlers

Better than Fort Fisher

RetroReclaimations Jen Benson

Visited for a homeschool field trip. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. The grounds are immaculately kept and clean. The kids loved that two important periods of history were at this one spot. Will return and recommend to others.

This State historical site is a dream. At the town/ fort the history is awesome. The museum at the site is probably the best in the State. Early Spanish, Colonial to Civil War history is yours. The people inside the museum are some of the best you will find working in North Carolina.

This was a great tour for our three boys (ages 5, 9, & 11). Not too long to wear them out, and occasional shade along the tour path. One tip: start at the church. We went the other way and realized we did the tour backwards! :-) Self-guided walking tour took about an hour. Visitor center interior tour took about the same and featured history of Brunswick Town from Native Americans through modern archaeology.

Sarah Hamer

Still struggling with hurricane damage, but a beautiful site, well worth the visit.

W Newcomb

April Arney

I love historic places. This was interesting, but other than the grave stones and the 18th century house foundations, there wasn't much to see.

An excellent on site museum details the various events that have taken place on the grounds of Brunswick. We spent about an hour walking through the ghost town and the remnants of the Civil War fort. The continuing archaeological work is present and happening out in the open for the public to see.

Great place

Karen Cuneomcdonald

Fascinating historic site that is set in a rather remote area. Nice self tour map available, and the historic grounds are well maintained. My family learned a lot while visiting here. The mound area where battles took place is very creepy (haunted??) & the signs to watch out for snakes and gators was a bit alarming.

Heather Goesch, MPH, RDN, LDN

Interesting historical site that is off-the-beaten path, meaning minimal crowds in a lovely area with nice trails.

Jon Padgett

An interesting view into the past! The staff here are knowledgeable, friendly, and eager to answer questions.

Forrest Ward

History

Dan Donovan

Very quiet historical site along the banks of the Cape Fear River. Well worth the visit just to enjoy the views and tranquillity. Lots of history here, not just civil war.

Scott Burton

The staff is very knowledgeable and the short museum quite informative. They recommend you watch the fifteen minute video before taking your first tour and I'm so glad I took that recommendation. It definitely helps give you a feel for how the grounds looked before they were mostly excavated foundations. The highlight for me was the walk. The views of the river along that end of the walking path are beautiful and the walk was long enough for my twins to fall asleep in their stroller. Win/Win!

Kiss Sloane

Fantastic time will definitely be back

Joseph Wood

Christopher Webb

Went during a Christmas special event and look forward to returning to see all that we missed.

Treasure Moore

Roy Miller

A beautiful walk near and along the Cape Fear River. A great historical place all free and very interesting.

Jarrod Crawford

We came upon this stop on a drive and thought this place was amazing. What an important piece of American history. Loved the stunning river views and the museum was excellent. Saw a large gator in the pond on the way in too! This is a great stop.

Dave Harding

Lots of history; from the early founding of Brunswick, an attack by the Spaniards in the late 1740's, another attack by a British squadron in 1776 that destroyed the town, and the building of Ft. Anderson on the ruins of Brunswick in the early 1860's. The museum has an introductory video on the history plus a fine exhibit of artifacts found on the grounds. Well worth the visit.

Rachel Teague

Interesting exhibits, easy walk through mounds/sites

Daniel Patterson

Awesome historical site of AMERICA

Amanda Kemper

Great area and museum to check out! Certainly stop in and take a look if you are in the area. There is no fee to enter the museum. There are a couple of historic sites here with a wealth of information about them.

Mandy O'Brien

This is a quaint little historical site. It is a small museum, remnants of old buildings, and the shell of an old church perfect for photos. While out on the walking trail, we spotted an archaeological dig. As we walked closer, we were invited to come check it out and given a personal tour by the woman in charge.

scott hair

Like a walk into the past So many people do not know of this hidden gem pass it on please

Very interesting for historians

Sarah Davis

Beautiful state park filled with history dating back to the revolutionary war. Bring a piknic, let the kids run the grounds, lots of Oak trees for shade.

Edward Ovsenik

Great history of America's Revolutionary and Civil Wars

Michelle Kessler

Lovely walk and information.

Robert Brown

The fifth most visited historic site in North Carolina. Great museum explaining the story of Brunswick town and Fort Anderson. The remains of the town and Fort can be seen as you walk through the well-maintained lawns and woodland settings. An expansive wooden deck provides a wonderful view of the Cape Fear River, the highway for commerce that served the town when it existed.

Natasha Deal Haas

Another favorite vacation stop! The boardwalk by the river is wonderful as you stroll through some of our country's most important eras. The exterior walls of St. Phillips church, a pre-Revolutionary structure, are still standing with marks from both the Revolutionary War, as well as the Civil War. It is interesting to consider what these walls have witnessed. The staff at the site are wonderful and the museum is a perfect size and very well curated.

frankie waddell

Gabriel Baker

Very good info and good walk to.

Leonard Tippett

wonderful experience going to this place. Highly recommended.

Mark Eclov

A little off the beaten track but well worth the visit for American history buffs. Brunswick played an important roll in early American sea trade, but a variety of natural and man made disasters sealed its fate. A century later, Confederate forces used the same area to protect the Port of Wilmington, N.C from Union invaders.

Gerald Monaco

What a great place to visit and see the history of the Cape Fear region right before your eyes.

Ted Hotham

Wonderful out of the way location with LOTS history

Alexander Durham

Awesome place! Lots of interesting history. Hosts activities for kids regularly.

gamewithmackenzie Sullivan

Tracey Tippett

Hey Civil War Historic Site is walking Bass, handicapped and friends, and demonstrations throughout the year.

Lloyd Oxendine

Awesome part of History.

Elizabeth Jenkins

Had an enjoyable visit recently. The exhibit hall of nicely renovated which covers the history of the area from the Native Americans through the Civil War. There were many artifacts with excellent descriptions. Aside from the exhibit hall, most of the site is outside. The remains of the church were beautiful and well marked with artistic renderings of what it would have looked like and also details of the citizens buried on the church grounds. Some feedback I would offer is some signage to indicate that part of the walking path is closed. We thought we could walk all the way around the perimeter of the fort but after getting 3/4 of the way around there was yellow tape and we had to turn around. In the middle of summer this was a bummer.

Cody Carpenter

I had a blast! I love history and currently in US History class at UNCW. Our instructor brought us here and gave us a personal tour. He knows some of the staff and people apart of the renditions and it made the experience that much better. I love learning local history and history in which I can go out and be apart of the experience. Also, the flag inside was just a neat piece to see and hear about how it shaped the civil war. Which is also cool, that there are two parts of history in one site, Civil War and Revolutionary War eras. If you love history, you should definitely check it out!

Patti Angulo

Great stop in our travels. Self guided

Nonna mcGee

Matthew Garris

Captain Mike Hamby

Hidden gem of colonial and civil war history I have been by hounded of times but never stopped who would have thought the first flushing toilet in nc would be located here

DeDee Williams

Very nice and peaceful place to visit. On your drive to it, you can see alligators on the side of the road in the lake.

Valerie Sparrow

If you need an adventure with the kids, take time to visit this historic site. You will not be disappointed. On my visit there was volunteers dressed in costumes. They were very eager to share information about life during colonial times in North Carolina. Exploring the site gave our group an opportunity to have lively conversations about the housing needs, food sources and the resourcefulness of early settlers. The museum was enjoyable as well.
