Very engaging exhibitions at this small museum. Exhibitions focus on art produced by artists who taught or studied at the legendary, avant-garde Black Mountain College, which brought Bauhaus theories of art and craft to the US (Josef and Anni Albers and some of the other instuctors were major European artists who had fled Nazi Germany). I have visited twice and both times, the exhibitions featured wonderful art plus fascinating archival photos and other materials. Most recently, I saw the excellent Jacob Lawrence exhibition, which included new artworks responding to Lawrence's art made by four contemporary artists. I highly recommend visiting!

Interesting place, however some of the exhibits appeared to be not working.

A gem .

Christopher Hall

Cool displays, some interactive although it's hard to know which are and which aren't since they're labeled in the fine print. Small but interesting Bahaus display when I visited.

This was an interesting little museum dedicated to the history of a very famous arts college that operated in North Carolina in the mid 20th century. You would think that for such a famous institution, which saw so many famous artists, the foundation would be able to afford some nicer digs and a bigger space. The actual place is just a single storefront, ground floor and basement. The main exhibition area is on the ground floor, and they seem to focus on different members of the college's faculty at different times. Check to see who is being displayed, because when we went, they only had work up by a single painter and almost nothing by anyone else. The basement has a library and discussion/classroom area, gift shop, and a tiny bit more exhibition space.

Two locations across the street from each other. So glad to see the history and importance of Black Mountain College being preserved and enlivened through research and presentation.

This museum consists of two storefronts across the street from each other. They are more like art galleries than a museum, there is nothing about the history of Black Mountain College. On the day I went, one of the rooms was open and had works by an artist historically associated with the college. On the other there was a sign "back in five minutes" Some people had already waited ten minutes, I waited five more. The woman across the street, in the other storefront, said "maybe he went to lunch". I called their phone number and got the answering service, no call back. If you visiting Asheville and happen to be in the neighborhood, stop in and see what is on display. But don't go out of your way to go there.
