REVIEWS OF The Morgan Library & Museum IN New York

Thomas Godfrey

The library itself is gorgeous but the exhibits lack a bit. However, the current Walt Whitman exhibition is good. Huge cafe and fine dining area.

Sheryl Katz

Intriguing changing exhibits paired with an elegant and inspiring permanent collection.

Quinton Lawrence

Beautiful place. I enjoyed the visual arts/ literary mix. Friendly employees.

Gerry Gan

Very nice, relatively small museum. The library permanent exhibits are quite interesting and the special exhibits were excellent. Currently, there's a Walt Whitman exhibit that's very good. Mauice Sendek exhibit doesn't open until this Friday, June 14th...

Jody Thrash

Beautiful place. I could spend days here being fascinated by the collection Morgan amassed. The Tolkien exhibit (no pics) drew me in, but the antiquities really held their own. Definitely a place to make time for on a visit to NYC.

David Chess

Very nice museum, interesting exhibitions. The part that used to be Morgan's private study and library has converted hundreds of people to Communism. If ya know what I mean.

Louise Glass

Beautiful museum. Stunning and interesting exhibits. Tons of history. Something for everyone.

T. B.

Spectacular small tourist destination in south midtown. I can't believe I didn't discover it until about my tenth visit to the city. Beautiful building, amazing artwork and historical collections, and usually a special exhibit or two see. Very nice dining options. I will go back again and again. A cultural oasis!

Roddi Chambers Smith

My husband and I visited the museum to see the Tolkien exhibit. It's a must for fans of Middle Earth. The museum itself is on the smaller side but well worth a visit. Staff members are very helpful.

Sina Shirinpour

Amazing little museum with a lot to offer. I really enjoyed walking through Morgan's private library. If you're into books, I highly recommend this place since it is ignored in favor of more touristy attractions. Get a tour guide if you can to get into more details and have appreciation of this site.

Jeffery Page

An Amazing place. Worth a visit. Loved the Maurice Sendak exhibit. Plus the lunch there was delicious. An amazing vegetarian burger option. The flight of gin drinks also recommend by Hemingway is perfect after staring at works by Hogarth and Blake. The photos on display are also very thought and emotionally provoking.

Aleksey Balagula

The museum itself is amazing and many of the things inside have interesting histories going back to ancient Messopotamia and Egypt. The J.R.R Tolkien exhibit was particularly interesting as it highlights his skill as an artist and shows off his life shaping his stories into what they ultimately became. The museum itself is very clean and modern looking. There is even an option to use augmented reality when exploring the museum. The museum also has a cafeteria. Highly recommended!

Patricia A Johnson

A great museum to visit. The focus on different authors is thorough and really interesting. They change their exhibits often, so check on line to see if the exhibit is online with your interest. I just saw JR Tolkiens work and how it all came together. I can't wait to see the next exhibit that the library presents. However, seeing Morgan's collection and the rooms he built is worth the visit. He put a lot of thought into this library. It is fun to examine the collections and see how many authors can be recognized. The bible collection from all the different countries is enlightening. During your visit you can have a bite to eat and a glass of wine in a light airy room. A lovely way to spend 2 hours or more in NYC. A great different experience. It can compare with the library of Congress in Washington.

Dave Ekrem

You'll be able to see from the photographs that we went to the Tolkien exhibit. It was everything we hoped and more and we had to tremendous time. We also looked at the permanent collection after lunch, which was pretty great.

Tony Ruiz

Very nice atmosphere. Quiet and very nice workers. The Tolkien exhibit is fantastic if you are a fan of the author. They have a nice restaurant too. Great shop for literary trinkets and books.

Ellen Saslovsky

Loved the exhibits. Docents were fabulous

Nicole Conti

If you like books this is a really cool museum.

Katherine Cruz

Very beautiful structure. Came here for an exhibit. The wait was very long. I would hope that they develop a better system for next time but beaide that you must visit.

Philip Gissen

I haven't been to the Morgan since high school. The modernization and additional galleries make a visit truly worthwhile. While the library and study still inspire awe, the exhibits help us think and ponder. The barons of industry and finance during the 19th century and early 20th century, such as the Morgan's, used world economics to line their pockets and maintain the status quo of the social and economic hierarchy. We should learn from history, but we don't. History simply repeats itself. While it is not yet a museum, a baron of finance and industry maintains his own self indulgent temple on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street. Haven't we progressed enough to recognize the arrogance of these robber barons? I guess not.

Sophie Kent

Excellent, intimate museum. Lovely atrium café. Excellent gift shop. Free audio tours. Senior rate.

Craig Davis

What a beautiful little museum in NYC! The museum was very clean and well maintained, the staff - very friendly. The Tolkien exhibit was amazing! It definitely worths visiting.

Abdallah abu ghalyoun

Was so lucky to the Tolkien exhibit twice during our visit to NYC. Attended the Friday lecture and had the opportunity to purchase Tolkien related items. Not everything from the Bodleian collection, but fascinating. Highly recommend for any Tolkien reader

Paolo Landrini

Definitely worth a visit for the ambiance as well an original Gutenberg Bible on display

Flavio Vettorel

Beautiful maintained old library not that big you can do it in like 2 hours. Price is 22$

David Gerbino

I went to see an exhibit. I was surprised how awesome the entire museum and library is. I'll be going back.

Jubin Chheda

This is such a lovely gem in lower midtown. The exhibitions are nice. Music on Friday evenings can be a treat

Christine Choi

It seems like this museum is less known to the public but the Library here is a must see. The collection is incredible, filled with beautiful details. The art exhibitions are always interesting too.

Ellen Burns

I enjoy visiting the Morgan Library & Museum for the well researched and artfully displayed exhibits. From what I've seen I would guess that the Morgan owns artifacts comparable to any fine museum in Europe. It's impressive. In addition one can do a comprehensive visit in little more than two hours. The cafe menu is quite satisfying and I enjoy the gift shop.

Barrett McCormick

The Tolkien exhibit helped me to better understand Tolkien. Seeing original drafts and maps was moving. But there were too many people moving too slowly.

Raymond Ellis

This is a very interesting museum. The library and study were impressive. I also liked the cylinder seal collection and the John Singer Sargent exhibit

Jeffrey Holmes

Very cool! A friend had passes Would have not thought to go on my own. Glad I did. The exhibits are extremely interesting.

Sandra Bushby

Fantastic museum. Have attended many times. Highly recommend.

Triya Bhattacharya

Beautiful, very well-maintained library of Pierpont Morgan, as well as an art museum with some chosen works from his artwork collection. There are a lot of rare pieces of history, like the Gutenberg Bible, showcased in the beautiful red room covered with wall-to-wall books. Fridays after 7pm, entry is free. There's a line that forms outside but it's usually short enough that everyone is able to enter. Currently the exhibition on Cruelty and Humour by Hogarth was definitely worth a visit

Letizia Scaliti

This is the perfect not overcrowded museum to visit in NY, even on Friday afternoons when it's free (7-9pm). The line was very short and at 7 sharp we where let inside the Museum. The library is super beautiful, reminded me of my Disney days as it has a Beauty and the Beast vibe. Totally recommended, especially if you often visit the city and are running low on ideas.

Marcia Aeschlimann

The most amazing place I’ve ever seen. Don’t miss it!

Benjamin Miller

Incredible collection of books and art--the kind of stuff you get chills seeing in person: a Gutenberg Bible, original Mozart manuscripts, first edition Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman personal notebooks, etc.

Xavier Bower

I had such a good time here: saw a bit of the Sendak exhibit, lots of amazing amazing photography exploring groups of people, the exhibit on humor and cruelty and printmaking, the libraries and studies themselves, a big collection of originals surrounding Walt Whitman, and various odds and ends. All destinations in of themselves to varying degree. It's worth the expensive entry fee.

Toon Shader

Slipped on a crab comin in right quick. They call me baby face. I don't know why. I think it's because I have so beautiful. Found a HUGE chimmy on the sidewalk. Not sure how safe, but pounded that down like juevos ran chairos. Give me some buttery biscuits, I have a present for you.

Mercy Dee

So idk if it was because of bad timing or what but omg you can barely wade around in the building. Tourist out the wahzoo! And construction?? Everything was closed down and you arent even allowed to see there full assortment of books.. Highly disappointed

Rosemary

Love this smaller museum in the city Always wonderful exhibitions Can also enjoy lunch or early dinner here as well.

Samuel Goldenberg

Fantastic colection a must seeing in New York.

Dan Swartz

One of the strongest and in my opinion most underrated cultural institutions in New York City. The collection of artifacts and books is breathtaking. The scope of history represented by the collection is breathtaking. The modern renovations and historical architecture are breathtaking! Truly a great space. A must for any culture vulture visiting the City.

Guy Hartstein

A very charming museum and gallery. When I was there they had a Mary Shelley exhibit which was very interesting. The staff however was a but gruff, but were helpful in getting around. The library itself, that is, the library that Morgan himself owned, is probably the most interesting portion of the library/museum because of its many antiques and Gutenberg Bibles.

Heidi S

Went to the Morgan Library and Museum specifically to see the "Tolkien, Maker of Middle Earth" exhibit. I was not disappointed! The exhibit, while not well organized for such a large crowd to go through easily, was mind-blowing for me. I read The Hobbit for the first time at age 8, and have revisited it (and Tolkien's other works) innumerable times since. I named my son after a Tolkien character. So, needless to say, I was in Nerdvana! But, before going to the Tolkien thing, I explored the other galleries that the Morgan has to offer. The buildings are so beautiful, and I enjoyed exploring the different rooms and wide variety of treasures housed therein. $22 was a bargain price for an afternoon of pure joy. I would very much like to revisit and learn more.

Rix Harden

Fantastic artwork along with a great exhibit of Sendak!!!

Hyeon Im

The library, while not as big as I had imagined (it is J.P. Morgan's personal library), it has Gutenberg Bible, Saint Exupery's notes on little prince, Isaac Newtons book, and other invaluable items. Also occupying the bookshelves are the first editions of many well known literature. Portaits on the wall, the architecture are also worth seeing. they also have a restaurant and a gift shop. Certain days are free entrance as well. Check before you go.

Ozz Fan

Wonderful place in the middle of Manhattan. If you love the Beauty itself, you will fall in love with this magical place.

Shiva Shankar

Near the Maddison square park in New York City, nice places in and around to hang out.

Yossi W

Lots of books and a little bit of art. It was okay. The violin serenade in the courtyard was very nice.

Merle Morgan

Great exhibit of John Singer Sargent's portraits!

Will Koehrsen

An elegant museum with a diverse collection of art and historical artifacts. The building itself is stunning, with a lovely, open, naturally-lighted atrium and an intriguing design combining modern and classical elements. I'd recommend this museum to visitors of natives of New York. Check it out late on Friday nights (7-9 pm) when it's free to visit!

DAVID STEIN

Yes. Great experience. Thank you. David Stein.

Christine Jones

Amazing collection of historic artefacts collected with dedication by Mr Morgan and son

Kim Wells-McDonnell

Went to see the Tolkein exhibit. Exhibit itself was so condensed in space it made from a long line to get through the room. Excellent information and artifacts thought. Also really enjoyed the library room.

Fred Korz

Caught the Tolkien exhibit and a little of the gift shop/book store. Plenty more we didn't have time for.

Samantha deManbey

Beautiful library with a variety old and antique books, including a Guttenberg Bible. Beautiful painting and artwork on the ceilings! Art exhibitions were interesting. I was looking forward to seeing the Tolkien exhibit, but it was so crowded on the weekend that it was difficult to view in detail.

Martha Pavao

This place is amazing! The rotating exhibitions make this a yearly event for us. It's like having ancient and Medieval Europe in the middle of NYC. Tapestries, ancient Egyptian and Roman artifacts, Glass Elevator, great bookstore, the secret vault with Morgan's expensive books, and even a cafe. Children 10 and older will see a lot in about an hour. Get the headsets if possible. They are worth it! 3 Gutenberg Bibles :)

David Anderson

Fantastic collection of art and antiquities. Visually just a great treat.

Rudi Bester

A step back into the grand time of J.P. Morgan, whose name is above the doorway of some of the most opulent bank buildings in the world. Visit his personal library and his office - where, later in life, he spent his time reading and playing solitaire. Plan for a 2-hour visit. About $22/person. Worthwhile if you have the time.

Pieter Sommen

Great museum. The buildings were joined together with an atrium by Renz Piano, let's in a lot of light. Great old study of Morgan, library. Their collection is great, right now Italian drawings, Tolien, everything well worth seeing.

Carla Ferreira

Top top top! The biggest library I've ever seen and quiet although being a touristic point. Gave me hanger to study just to use this structure, seat be in peace and read a bit!

Gerard Harrington

I was looking for something low-key to do for my birthday and saw online that the Morgan Library and Museum is free on Friday evenings from 7-9pm. My girlfriend is big on museums and we decided to take a look before having a late dinner. The museum is spotless and very well laid out. We saw a few exhibitions including one on Walt Whitman. The museum had plenty of visitors, both locals and tourists but not once did it feel overcrowded. Security is tight but not overbearing. The mix between alertness and helping visitors was just right. There was more that we did not see but for that we would need more than two hours. But it was free so we can't complaint at all. Highly recommended.

Stephen Nadas

Went to see the Tolkien show, which was quite good for a Middle Earth fan. The Morgan itself is a nice, former super opulent home that's been turned into a museum. One can see that is was a fabulously appointed home/mansion if you go in for that sort of thing. The library has a Gutenberg Bible, etc.

Jane Avril

Spectacular library. Highly recommended for a Friday night.

Lind Phillips

Not only a museum but a piece of living history. The guides were knowledgable and didn't rush you thru.

Eugene J Holt

I liked it more before the remodel/expansion: warmer atmosphere. Less institutional, not that the world class displays are complaining.

Sandra Markham

Awesome place. J.P. Morgan was quite the collector.

Mare Panasewicz

What a phenomenal museum and historical archive for rare books. Any bibliophile will be thrilled to bits coming and visiting this library. I had the privilege of going during the Tolkien exhibit. They had so many rare pieces from the man behind one of the greatest literary worlds of our time. They did an excellent job setting up and exhibiting all the items. If you're in NY and like books or rare pieces of history, this is the place to visit.

wei zhang

Old fashion style, I like the wonderful books in shelf.

Melody Walsh

When you think of museums in New York City, you think Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, or any other museum surrounding Central Park. The Morgan Library and Museum wouldn't be on the top of the list. I've never heard of it until I looked up NYC museums recently. This museum is not free and a little pricey for the size of the exhibits, but I'm glad I visited. It's $20 for adults and $13 for students. This museum showcases Pierpont Morgan's private library, study, and rotunda, which are absolutely gorgeous. I loved being in the library. There were so many books and the design and architecture was stunning. It reminded me of the scene in Beauty and the Beast where Belle discovers the Beast's library.

Eli Harrell

Would be 5 stars if admission wasn't so expensive!

Alexander Kontoleon

I went to the Morgan Museum to see the exhibition 'Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth' which was the most extensive public display of original Tolkien material and included family photographs and memorabilia, Tolkien’s original illustrations, maps, draft manuscripts. It was awesome. Before taking in that exhibit I did a quick tour of the building. "Wow" doesn't really capture it. The architecture, the marble, the sheer size of the rare book collection is staggering. To consider this was at one time someone's home is truly mind boggling. I cant wait to go back for other exhibits in the future.

Kate Kosche

Gloriously preserved library and study of John Pierpont Morgan. Morgan spent a lifetime acquiring riches and then his son (JP Morgan, Jr) gave the collection to the public, essentially the start of the museum. A modern annex contains much of the treasure, but the preserved library and study in the original mansion is the real gem. The museum has THREE Gutenberg bibles, the largest number in any single collection, though only one is on display. J. P. Morgan (Senior) intervened in the panic of 1907, personally underwriting $30 million in bonds to prevent New York City from bankruptcy and rescued the New York Stock Exchange. He also bought lots and lots and lots of stuff, which you can see here.

Fred Eaton IV

This is a lovely little museum. The library and study are gorgeus. Being able to stand inches away from a Guttenberg Bible as well music handwritten by Schubert, Stravinsky and Chopin affected me emotionally in a way that surprised me. Visit this museum and enjoy true treasures that the Morgan family has preserved for the world to experience.

Andrew Tan

Wonderful museum of rare books. Architecture of the building was interesting. Definitely worth a visit if you are in New York.

David A Castro

One of my favorite museums in NYC. 3 Gutenberg bibles (one consistently on display) Worth the trip over.

Aziz Yokubjonov

Great museum with friendly staff and well organized exhibits!

Stephen Landry

A wonderful experience. I visited the Tolkien exhibit, but their library is spectacular. Well worth a visit if you're in the area. A longish, but quite doable walk from Penn Station. I had lunch in the restaurant, and it was very good, and the prices were reasonable for the location and experience.

Amy Jongeling

The exhibits are often worth the visit. As is the lovely cafe and gift shop. Always a nice afternoon outing.

Jennifer Gelman

I love JP Morgan's study and library. Lovely architecture and rooms! I wish the audio tour was more extensive about the architecture. Also, the museum is pricey!

James Law

Exhibition was worth it (Sargent). One day admission is a bit pricey ($22). Also had a good photography exhibit. Would like to return and see the library.

Mariana Leung

Beautiful library and museum. Hidden gem for restaurant week

Warren A

Nice library/ museum. Friday nights are free at a certain time. Plenty to see

Lizanne FLUXMON

Lowlife security guard with no manners opposed to the kind well-informed beautifully educated staff. The security guard was very rude and ignorant couldn't properly string together a sentence was not helpful in any answers to any questions. The staff members were able to inform you on current exhibits, closing time, check coat and location of restrooms

Julia DeAngelis

This place is a hidden gem! I have been meaning to go for years and finally made it last weekend! I got to see the tolkein exhibit on the final day and although very packed it was extraordinary! The permanent Morgan library is also breathtaking and their area of drawings was quaint but I was surprised to see a couple Da Vinci invention drawings! Overall a magical experience like going to Italy in Midtown!

Sandy Schwinger

The Tolkien exhibit was wonderful. And the Renaissance artwork exhibit was empty because everyone was in the Tolkien exhibit. Don't miss both! It was great to see the work of legendary masters! And the dining room was a good place to relax with great food!

Nelson Jhomery Abreu

It is a beautiful place with a wonderful staff. I got here by mistake and this awesome lady went the extra mile when I asked for a location which was supposed to be nearby. I explained to her it was my first time in the city. She didn't know where it was [the place I was looking for] but went beyond and located me in the patio as she was looking it for me while I thought she was doing something else. With a big and genuine smile she came back and told me the results. The building is gorgeous and candid. Good free Wi-Fi and remarkable artifacts and arts

Kat Simon

Nice place to hang out. Amazing collection of bibles. Their cafe is trendy and has a bite or two and good drinks list for your to wind down.

Joshua P'ng

Terrific little museum showcasing an amazing looking library of one of America's greatest financiers

Alex Mirov

Gorgeous building with a marvellous, well-curated small collection. If you're interested in medieval manuscripts, it's a must-see. Went for the Tolkien Exhibit and Symposium, and it was delightful. The accessibility is the reason for 1 star off. The stage in the newly added auditorium doesn't have wheelchair access, making the disabled speaker sit on the floor. There's no excuse for that in a 21st century addition. The gift shop is also odd to access, requiring use of a staff elevator and security. They're small things but contribute overall to the impression of belonging or not belonging. Nonetheless, will definitely return when we come back to Manhattan.

Dave Scaringe

Amazing beautiful building and interior I never knew existed.

Kamal Deep

Magnificent library to visit. Shows the granduer and passion of JPMorgan. The architecture, the layout, the decor, the paintings and tapestry show the taste and eye for elegance of the man. I recommend going on Friday evenings as there's pleasant live music from 7pm. Grab a drink from the Cafe and enjoy the show.

Boris Bagryanskiy

Cool museum, but I dont understand why anyone would idolize someone who made it because their father.

Beni Borukhov

Far from the largest museum around but parts of the building and collection are truly stunning so it's worth visiting at least once Good way to spend around an hour on a Friday night when it's free.

Nawel M

A wonderful place, well organized, warm and vivid. The architecture is a breathtaking inside. The only thing for giving 4 stars is the price is a bit expensive for a tiny museum and a library but you are not going there every day. An interesting place if you love both books and art. You will see all the first NYer magazine covers and some other painting.

Sara Durkacs

Excellent collection. Sublime structure designed my Charles F. McKim. Great dining (have the fries) with vegan options. Museum Shop with tons of options—from high end to low end and everything in between. And a nice place to take out of town visitors.

Daniel Myers

In today's world, one often sees people with more money than sense. The Morgans who had this Library built do not fit that bill! The place could have been a gaudy house of excess and self aggrandizement, but it is instead a quality home of the intersection of art, history, and literature. I could go on rhapsodizing poetically about the architecture, the collection, the design of the wood work, the books, but I think it's more important that you know that it is free to get in on Friday evenings, from 7-9.

Robert Longmire

Fantastic museum. Take the guided tour.

Lorene Rutherford

If I could give it a 10 star rating I would. It is simply awe inspiring to see such a collection of rare books, letters, illuminated manuscripts, original hand written musical scores, artworks and other objects in an architectural treasure of a building. It is my favorite museum in all the world.

Linda Lalima

Nice museum. Restaurant was very nice. Food was delicious. Went for Sat brunch.

Commander Fight Club

This place has a stellar collection Well maintained clean and great visit for exhibitions

Andrada Coos

Gorgeous library, with lots of very interesting manuscripts, books and letters on display!

John H

ARE YOU A JRR TOLKIEN FAN?!! The Morgan currently has exhibit of artwork about Middle Earth created by Tolkien himself. Including the first book jacket of the hobbit. Very cool. This is a small museum part of which was JP Morgans offices and library. The library room is unbelievably beautiful. Parts of Morgan's collection of original manuscripts and first additions is great. They rotate displays of them. Guttenberg Bible is just one of them Great artwork too.

Oliver Fiegel

The secret is the fantastic food here:-) Get there for lunch.

Valerie Lucznikowska

Stunning...a true gem. Exhibits are always stellar, and the restsurant'd excellent food is complemented by the beautiful, restful ambience. One of my top favs in NYC.

Classical Scholar

This museum is a Mecca for anyone who loves historic manuscripts

Michael Iris

Great hidden gem in midtown Manhattan!

Jenifer Rosenberg

Always a treat! We go several times a year because they always have interesting new exhibits! We plan to get a membership because we love it so much.

Richard J Naylor

Super tours. A walk through in the past was nice but a Sargent exhibit and a tour this week was excellent.

Carrie Matthews

Amazing collecting of rare books. Beautiful building.

Jisoo Kim

The Morgan maybe my favorite museum in the city. The exhibits are top notch and looking at all the old books is always fun. I have been to the Morgan for an event in the auditorium and the acoustics and venue was great as well. I'll probably go back for the Lord of the Rings exhibit currently going on and have some of the fun curated tea with mead and honey cakes at the cafe. Also, its free on Fridays after 7pm

Harvey Mains

A wonderful museum, library and a quiet place to have lunch or just coffee. Good service. The library is a must see. The exhibits change regularly so check their website for what is on display when you are planning to visit. Plan several hours for your visit and be sure to visit the gift shop. One of our favorite places to visit in NYC.

liz cutler

One of my favorite museums, exquisite collection and exhibits. I enjoyed drawing on a Saturday from a Sargent painting, and seeing the library displays of pages handwritten by so many familiar authors.

A.C. Antonelli

The Morgan may not be the biggest museum in New York City but it's absolutely worth taking a walk around. If you tend to get nostalgic about books or a time when massive personal libraries were desired the this place is for you. The historical context is palpable. The rotating exhibits are also pretty great, and at least for the time being, you can enter the museum for free during certain hours on Friday nights.

vanesa taz

I loved the place and exhibitions. I would definitely visit again

Judith Lewis

We went for the Sendak exhibit. Fabulous. Also always a thrill to see that Gutenberg Bible. The Morgan is a perfect size and such an incredibly diverse collection.

Marc Donner

A city landmark based on the original JP Morgan library. Now expanded and styling itself a "Library & Museum." The Museum portion is mostly about 2D works (prints, photos, and so on). The original library space is quite dramatic and worth walking around in. Recently expanded by addition of a modern section designed by Renzo Piano ... most of the expansion is underground and includes an auditorium and various other amenities as well as bunches of display space. Thus the Museum joins the global rotation of traveling exhibition venues. A worthwhile place to visit if you like books and things closely related to books.

Anna-Marie Aloia

This is a fantastic museum! JP Morgan house and library along with special exhibitions. Don't miss this opportunity. The permanent collections are so impressive. It's akin to the erupean museums in Paris or Rome, but just smaller.

Olivia Troehler

The life mask of George Washington was amazing, because it it the closest thing in the world to seeing what he actually looked like at the time. Also the library was beautiful. I do wish you could have seen into the secret areas behind the shelves.

Joel Leventhal

Wonderful museum that is worth every moment of you time. The old portion of the building is beautiful. The exhibit on M. Sendak that we came for was brilliant.

BrokenArrowSix

I walked in and every book is imprisoned behind cages. I thought that libraries were for learning.

Mao Fong Lim

Beautiful space - went on a Sunday and there was a string duet playing. It's a mix between a library, museum and gallery. Unlike the New York public library - this isn't a space for you to sit down in a library and work! Interesting rare books collection. Highlight was the Tolkien exhibition going on at the moment.

Abby Murphy

I was very disappointed that e didn't get too see see the exhibit for which we actually traveled all the way into the city because it was sold out by the time we could get there, in early afternoon. That said, I was also grateful that there are places to sit down for a while. I find the collections odd and somewhat disjointed, and sooner few of the books that I might actually like to look at are, of course, untouchable.

Jodie-Lynn McMullen

Absolutely beautiful personal library (they have a Gutenberg bible...say whaaaaaaat?). Not as big as I had imagined when I saw pictures online but on the plus side it's free to visit just the library (Didn't check out the other exhibits). If you are a book lover this place is a must see! Added bonus- free intellectual setting to take a snazzy LinkedIn profile picture (you can thank me later!)

Thomas Reefer

Elegant and beautiful with carefully curated small exhibits.

Israel Oros

Great place to visit while in DC You don't need a whole day to see it and is affordable and this place will give military a free pass. Sometimes they will have live music

Sebastian

Amazing little museum. Beautiful ceilings and exibitions. Popular café.

Cara Barker

I desperately wanted to see the Tolkien exhibit here. Because of my work schedule the only day I was able to see it was the last day of the exhibit. The website said nothing about needing tickets for the exhibition so when I showed up to the museum and was not allowed in to the exhibit because tickets had been sold out I was devastated. Again the website said nothing about needing tickets to see the exhibit. I could not be more disappointed, especially after taking time out of my only day off to travel the 45 minutes there in the pouring rain. Shame on this place for not advertising that you need tickets and for not making tickets more accessible.

Nigel Chan

Love the library and the exhibits! Will definitely come again

Samantha Rainwater

I absolutely loved visiting. They currently have an amazing Tolkien exhibit, a photo exhibit borrowed from the Canadian national gallery, and an exhibit of sketches from the Italian Renaissance. I took a group of students and they enjoyed it. The library also gave our group free admission because we had a large group of students with military parents. The library is beautiful—better than anything from Beauty and the Beast. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Midtown.

Alex Abdo

This museum is amazing and i love the way it looks.

Janjan

Want an Instagrammable place? You got it. Beautiful library with guided or independent tours(audio included). Includes several art galleries that are worth the peruse

Carlton Campbell

This was a great experience, the architecture brought you back to a time when details of every square inch of the interior of a building mattered! Then there was the rich collection of artifacts, ranging from the civil rights movement, a letter recounting the bombing that took place in an area dubbed as "black wallstreet", to Roman catholic paintings, Sumerians crafts- figures and writings. All of which shared the space with one of the greatest financial, and above all entrepreneurial minds of our time! JP MORGAN was truly a man interested in the world, money for him was not and end! And its reflective in the way his live and lead his life!

mark shulman

Very interesting gallery. Worth to come, especially on friday evening when it's free. Good music, overpriced drinks, comfortable restrooms. Enjoy your visit.

Laura Lee Everett

One of my favorite museums in the city. It is free on Friday nights. Amazing collections, beautiful architecture, great gift shop.

Patrick

Great place to take in some history! I would definitely recommend the free audio tour to get the full experience and learn about what you are looking at rather than strolling through. Friday’s after 7 it is free and usually have live music which is pleasant. Great place to spend an afternoon or evening before exploring the rest of the city.

Linda Mitala

The museum was fantastic and I loved a great many of the exhibits. Sadly the Tolkien exhibit was far to crowded to be able to get near anything.

Samuel Murphy

The exhibit featuring Tolkien's watercolors was lifechanging. Well presented, gave a great deal of context on his life, and had an amazing collection of pieces. I've heard good things about Morgan and based on how absolutely incredible and intimate the exhibit was I'd definitely recommend a visit if they have something which interests you. Unfortunately I was unable to take pictures.

Outstanding collection of books and artistic items. Bookstore was great.

We recently went to see the Tolken special exhibit. The historic library was a treat to see - that in itself was worth the visit. The art collection was also impressive. The special exhibit, however, was timed-entrance. Once we were able to access the room - it was unpleasantly crowded. It was like people were not exiting the room. Given the cost of the ticket and the wait to enter, I would have expected better management of the experience.

The detailing of the libraries and book collections, the walls, ceilings are all incredibly beautiful and preserved in a way almost nothing in nyc is. Worth a special visit. The exhibitions are all excellent and the Sendak exhibit is surprisingly interesting and fun.

I love historic architecture and items. This is a must see

Gabriela Balmaseda

Wonderful exhibits. There's also a sitting area where you can order beverages and enjoy live music.

A haven of tranquility in the centre of Manhattan, and a fascinating insight into the enthusiasms and character of one of finance's most influential figures. J.P. Morgan's personal library and study are open to the public and many interesting items from the great man's collection are on display. Audio guides strike the right balance between detail and accessibility. There is a nice cafe where live classical music was being played when I visited, and a good gift shop.

We went specifically for the Tolkien exhibit but was pleasantly surprised at the rest of the museum. Small but worth a look. Nice cafe right on the premises for a nosh or a full meal, good food

I went to the Morgan on a Friday when there was free admission. Since it is very cold out now I suggest waiting in the Starbucks across the street until the line to get in is at the door. You'll save yourself from possible frostbite. My favorite exhibit here was the actual library which was wonderful to see. I looked around at the books on display such as the Gutenberg bible but also the books in the cases. Quite a few rare books on display. The ceiling is also a work of art and so is the rotunda. Beautiful designs. I didn't get to see the Tolkien exhibit since the line was almost out the door but I bet it was great too. Gift shop is pretty pricey which is not unexpected at a museum.

Saw the Tolkien exhibit which was wonderful. Meal in the café was excellent. Had great time. Last there for an Hans Holbein show years ago. Nice new space.

My family and I visited the Morgan Museum over Easter Weekend to view the JRR Tolkien exhibit. The museum has beautiful architecture and a well-organized layout. The cafe area had beautiful live music playing and the curated exhibits were well put together. The JRR Tolkien exhibit was wondrous and included so many beautiful pieces and fascinating information about the author of the Lord of the Rings series. As a fan of the world he created, this exhibit was a tremendous experience. I also really enjoyed seeing the Morgan study and library.

Very impressive architecture made by Renzo Piano-the new part

An amazing place to visit if you want to see what amount of useless rubbish money can buy in the early 20th century. We had a good laugh when we visited

Robin Rothman

Fantastic Tolkien exhibit and we'd wished we'd had time to see other collections.

A short distance from Grand Central and Penn Station, the Morgan Library and Museum houses manuscripts and printed books, some of them in rare bindings, as well as his collection of prints and drawings. Founded in 1906 by banker and financier J. P. Morgan as his private house library, it was made a public institution in 1924. Has great books and paintings, but also great architectural features worth viewings as well. Usually $22 ticket for adults, but admission is free on Fridays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Original Shakespeare. Original Charles Dickens books. The Vedi exhibition was unfortunate to me. I thought it was going to include most of his life. It only included a Otello and Falstaff.

Wow. A fascinating place with a free admission option

Mark Shahon

Loved the Maurice Sendak exhibit. Very calm place. Will go back.

In all my years living in NYC I had never been to this place. Boy, was I missing out! They have solid, and very focused, exhibits, always interesting. I went to see their Frankenstein exhibit, which covered all aspects of Mary Shelley's creation - from her book, to art, to movies, etc. The museum itself is beautiful and a must see.

Evan Morier

Very cool museum to spend a little time at. The library is wild, lots of really old books. There was some decent art in the exhibits as well, including old artifacts collected by JP Morgan back in the day. They offer a student discount as well, which made it a more attractive Manhattan museum option.

This is an excellent museum. It's smaller than some of New York's other museums but it has an interesting collection of stuff. Definitely worth a visit.
