Beautiful objects and relaxing visit, out f the hustle and bustle of the Major sights. Free entry, great location
A well-managed, clean, exquisite museum. Highly recommended if you have an hour or two, or waiting for the ferry to bring you to the nearby islands :) The current exhibition by T.C. Cannon is beautiful and quite powerful. The best thing about it is that it’s FREE. You only need to have your belongings screened for security.
It's a fascinating museum, a wing of the Smithsonian. Very interesting exhibits and a LOT to look at, even though the museum itself is pretty small. You could spend hours examining everything or just wander through. It's also FREE. And the building itself is beautiful, so you could spend time just admiring it. A definite recommendation and a place to go back to over and over.
It's a nice place and it's free, museum lovers must not miss. Lots of missing pieces of history and you get to know a lot about native Americans
It's free all time. Very interesting!
Great place to visit. It's nice having a museum dedicated to Native Americans
Great trip to National Museum of the American Indian and learning experience for my daughter's birthday. My family and I learned a lot about are ancestor in the Americas.I love the interactive presentation of the exhibits.
Very interesting place to visit...all types of different Indian history
A stunning exhibition of the art and history of various native peoples spanning the globe. Our shared struggles and unique forms of creativity were beautifully represented. Since no museum visit is complete without a stop to the gift shop, be sure to spend money on some of the lovely handcrafted wares and works of literature created by native artists available for purchase. A perfect way to support the livelihood and awareness of native artisans while also contributing to public education on our past and present struggles.
Probably about time to have a museum of native American History. The place is far from complete, entrance is for free momentarily. The museum is located in a historical building an is well accessible.
Samosas are very good! Saag paneer is excellent, tastes very fresh. Not crazy about the lamb vindaloo, has good flavor but the meat is a bit dry and the potato chunks are too big. Service is very friendly and nice ambiance.
Great museum, paints and arquitechture, there you can see the native american indean clothes, tools and culture in deep
Really nice museum. Good quality for something free. Interesting if you want to know more about Americans Indian
TC Cannon exhibit was awe inspiring. Really interesting to see Native American history in the form of clothing weapons and artifacts.
The permanent exhibit is wonderful + changing contemporary galleries. And it’s free, because it’s part of the Smithsonian.
Entry took over an hour with only two "cashiers" on duty. Buying tickets online did not save time, still had to wait in the same line and email each ticket individually to the cashier. Also, the $19 to get in is a suggested price, so you can pay whatever you want if you don't purchase tickets online. Once you get in, the actual displays are amazing. There's tons to look at, read, and learn. Also lots of places to sit and rest. The prehistoric animals and dinosaurs were my favorite. Small elevators with long lines and the bathrooms were disgusting, but other than that a very fun experience. It took about 2.5 hours to explore each floor, so plan on being there a while.
Beautiful pieces and collections.
You will always find something new with every visit. This place is unique in content and never ceases to amaze. I however do feel like there are great gaps of missing information and artifacts. The design of the museum is adequate at best and could use some sprucing up to better share the true native experience.
Good place that probably you'll get know about native American
Great place to meet with American history and discover American-Indian culture. There is a lot of amazing art pieces, their painted wood is something really attractive!
The sculptures outside alone were worth the trip alone. Great experience!
Not the most organized museum I have ever been to. As always Native American culture is interesting. Hes had some very unique displays.
My daughter and I were visiting NY from Australia in 2015. We had seen the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings, done Broadway, 5th Avenue, which were awe inspiring, but upon reflection, so was the the mostly untold story of the cultural diversity and great things that were achieved by the 1st peoples which were showed by the curators. For me it was a reflective highlight of a special trip.
Based in lower Manhattan New York just outside the Whitehall Street train station two blocks from the Staten Island Ferry and two blocks over from Wall Street. The statue of the stock market bull can be seen on the opposite side of tbe park. this is a museum that gives the history of the American Indians who lived in Manhattan and they encounter with the immigrants from Europe
The National Museum of the American Indian is one of my favorite places in downtown Manhattan. I live nearby so I am able to visit quite frequently. The museum is located in the historical US Custom House which is a true architectural gem. The permanent exhibits at the Museum are an interesting collection of Native American artifacts. The shop at the Museum offers an interesting selection of books for sale on Native American history and culture.
Perfect for a quick visit when you are downtown. Beautifully curated and it’s free :)
Really nice exhibits. Would like to see a little more, but overall very fun for the family. Nice kids area to explore, interact and learn. Great gift shop.
Very cool, excellent detailed exhibits and it’s free! the surrounding area is also bustling and feels safe as well. The water fountain outside is cool too. I learned a lot from this museum and found that reading the descriptions was very rewarding. I didn’t like the art as much as the artifacts though and it was amazing to see how beautiful and intricate the artifacts were.
Absolutely worth a visit. The T.C. Canon exhibit was incredible, and we spent most of our time there. When I'm back in town, I plan to go view the regular galleries! Admission is free, and it's an important museum located in a historical building. Don't miss out, especially if you're already planning to visit the WTC location.
Very beautiful building inside and out...
This place is a hidden gem. Very interesting. Beautiful artifacts. And it is free.
Interesting collection of Native American Art and artisanry. Well-made special exhibits too. Plus grand architecture, those staircases are simply fantastic.
Its not a big museum and I didn’t learn a lot about the native Americans. The childrens learning part was fun. And its free.
Free museum! With lots of information about Native Americans tribes and culture. You have to go through a metal detector. They have an awesome interactive exhibit on the first floor designed for younger children
Lovely place in which I spent the afternoon with my ancestors los taínos, in the Caribbean exhibition
Went there for the Dia de Los Muertos celebration. It was great. There was arts and crafts to make masks and butterfly. There was an altar for the dead loved ones and you can put a message. And at the end of the day there was a traditional dance.
Great collection for a small museum. Worth the security, which for us was very quick. Best of all it is free.
In spending the day in NYC this was one of the places I wanted to visit and see some of the collection of items of some of the American Indian Artifacts and history. It is very cool to see how they lived and what things they were able to create and get a small glimpse into their daily lives. I would recommend going here if you are interested to learn more and see some of the American Indian History
Interesting and small. Very interesting exhibit of paintings by T.C. Cannon.
My family and I enjoyed Paterson's rich history
Great one man show by the Native American artist Cannon.
Excellent exhibit on the Taino people, with information provided by a Taino gentleman (George something - apologies but I did not write down his name). Very pleased to learn new things about the Taino.
Fantastic show there at the moment - TC CANNON. So glad I got to it before it ends.
Fantastic day for my daughter and for us parents. Very cool experience.
Important place to cover if you care about some history
I was very impressed with their Taino exhibit!
A limited free museum in NYC's financial district. This is not a tourist highlight because the museum is fairly limited but it tells an important part of American history often overlooked. I wouldn't go out of my way to see the National Museum of the American Indian, but if you are in the area, it's worth a visit especially given the free price! The building itself is impressive although the museum was a bit dark on the inside.
Taino exhibition is first-class. Hurry to see it before it closes on November 12.
Some of the installations are a little bit dusty but it is still a must for most visitors to NYC - the kids will love it. And the store is much better than I expected.
July 2019 update: Second visit here. Between my two visits, I've had the opportunity to visit their sister museum in Washington DC. The permanent exhibition here is smaller, but the museum store at this location is definitely better stocked. The special exhibitions on the Taino people and culture, plus TC Cannon's colorful artwork were interesting and made the visit worth it. Admission is free as always. -------------------------------------------- November 2016: It is always free to visit this museum so there's no excuse not to. There should be more like this in the US celebrating the long and colorful, but oftentimes ignored, history of the first settlers of the land, told mostly from their own point of view, and not that of the occupying Europeans. It is also timely, given the current wave of anti-immigration sentiments in the country. It is regretful what foreign settlement of American Indian land has done to disadvantage them, portray them negatively, and even decimate their numbers. The museum also highlights the indigenous people of the entire Americas, from the Aztecs in Central America to the Incas in South America. Allot at least two hours when visiting.
Beautiful collection of American Indian art and history. Also includes the history of the Taino people of the Caribbean n south America. And it is free.
Interesting historical facts about native Americans.
As itself, i liked the museum. But the exhibition wasn't what i expected, it was not so much into the indians. I'll think that 3/5 is just enough.
Hosted a high school trip. My students were disruptive and unnecessarily loud. Staff not accommodating. 40 minutes getting through the metal detectors. Beautiful artwork. Informational. Not much interactive pieces.
You have to go here. Someone said I would need like 4-5 hours to really read everything... it was so true, I had three hours but I wish I could have taken my time even more! There was just so much I didn't know and so much that moved me and educated me. I feel incredibly blessed to have had the chance to go there. And its just such a cool place, they did a great job displaying the information - it really is a museum with so much to see!
I positively loved it. I didn't have enough time to enjoy the entire museum. I was with other people. The next time I will go alone so not to be rushed out. My interest in the Native is something that I have been interested in since I was a child. My first history class in college was a Native class. I used to visit the one in Harlem many "moons" ago. I love museums and that's one of my all time favorite.
Awesome! Very nice place and nice staff
Awesome museum. Very unique artifacts and paintings.
My teenagers liked it quite well and said the art was the best feature of this Smithsonian. The was a great area for younger kids that was hands-on and my 9 year old enjoyed. This is the perfect museum for a break from the NY heat in the summer and an opportunity to learn things more about Native history in the U.S. and also the Americas.
Museam was very interesting /we went to a program which was informative
Hi guys! Yesterday afternoon we went to the National Museum of The American Indian, the week narrated for free and although the sample is beautiful and very interesting, the walk is very fast.
Spacious & calm environment. Not like the Met or MoMA crowds
It is truly meant for an older demographic because the museum consists of paintings that you are not able to get close to and for some odd reason they dont have some sort of barrier near the paintings. The security is rude and will yell if you get too close.
This museum always has informative amazing exhibits. And it's free.
You should come here with your child. Amazing to see how America and world changed... It was like watching a movie while walking around.
A moment of reflection in a hurricane of a City. The staff members were professional and very nice. And it's wonderfully quiet in here ❤️
Definitely recommended for family. Great history
A wonderful museum that gives you the true story of indigenous people of america. It tells of people who were here long before so called "original" americans. The only people who can correctly state that they are the truly non-immigrants of this country. Great museum for the truth.
Went here on Columbus Day 2018. A proud Chippewa / Dene from Northern Canada. I do believe there needs to be more exhibits for outlining Canada's Indigenous as well because we do not experience a " border" and can live and work freely in U.S.A. in regards to the Jay Treaty.
Awesome museum that the city offers for FREE admission. There's a lot to see and learn here. The staff is helpful, very friendly and informative. I would recommend coming early so you don't miss anything and take as much time looking at things as you need. They have temporary exhibitions so it's great to stop by once in a while.
Beautiful collection of First Nation Art and artifacts. Great introduction to the history of indigenous peoples in Manhattan, the Caribbean and south America
Exhibition was great but the security was way too intrusive and the guards had no sense of humor and were quite over bearing. Seen less security at airports! Just Sayin
It's not famous like other museums for tourists but you must visit it. It's a nice building with a important collection of native American art. Free entry.
Super small museum with a lot of information. I wasn't super interested in the material but it was pretty well thought-out and there were quite a few artifacts. There was a room with clothing for different types of dance as well; I thought that was super cool and unique! We spent about an hour here, and it's nice that it's free!
Taíno exhibit and kids area were amazing.
Loved this place. Educational and interesting
My great granddaughter and I enjoyed the museum and the free concert. We had a blast.
Though it is encased in a remarkable stately edifice, its limited collection doesn't deliver enough substance. In the past—and possibly still—the shop offered several artistic items said to be of authentic modern Native American origin.
Beautiful, educational, and FREE! Be sure to check out the children's section on the ground floor (even if you're not a kid!)
Rich history with various artifacts. Free admission.
So much history jammed into this building. Multiple floors, countless exhibits and a ton of information. Very inspiring. Worth the visit.
Make sure to check for the tours. We had very knowledgeable guide, we didn't even notice that 1 hour passed. Also, they have cool games for kids downstairs.
Loved it! You can easily spend 3 hours here and even more if you are into American history
Super interesting museum with very friendly and informative staff!!
This Museum wasn't the best episode but then once we went downstairs to the imagination Center my whole family enjoyed it even my parents The Imagination Center was so much fun i would give it 10 Stars if I could
I went to visit the American Indian museum with all my class and teachers of Riverside language program and I had a very wonderful experience
Take a walk through Native American history at this historical landmark. Absolutely phenomenal experience. Artifacts will blow your mind. Clothing, tools, etc. Must see and it's free.
The architecture is breathtaking. On the tour, they give the history of when different parts of the building were built and how it was used, and it is fascinating. I highly recommend a visit.
What a great place. Full of history and knowledge. I love this Museum. Highly recommended
This place deserves a good feedback for providing free admission time on educational facts and evidences of the Native Americans. You should see their collections of artifacts and fashion pieces! Also check out the gift shop! is very interesting to read the wall articles! Also be prepared that there is security check at the door!!
It is small but interesting and interactive with nice staff. Great to come with kids.
A Beaux Arts beauty- I'd go for the Architecture alone!
It's amazing what you will learn you learn many of the local legends or about knowledge previously passed down as well as current knowledge related to this amazing group of individuals
So many beautiful pieces...I loved the skirt with abalone shells, the many baskets; etc.
Small, but there's a lot to see. I especially liked the TC Cannon exhibit (temporary).
Awesome experience. Very interesting history. Knowledge is power
Shows a bit of history for a free Museum the art is glorious and they have a wide variety of tribe information in was there about 2 months ago you can take about 1hr to run all the gallerys.
You learn about our past. It has great information, pictures, statues and artifacts about the American Indians.
I liked the museum but since it was for a school trip and we really couldn't do a lot it got boring after a while though I took a lot of good pictures
This museum is located near the wall street area and free. You can see the all north, central and south american Indian culture and interesting items in there .I recommend to everyone
It's a beautiful building with interested information
Loved this beautiful building and cultural history and artifacts.
Very interesting. Great for kids .
This place is great..spent many days here with my wife n my kids...love history..n there is also hands on things..
Very interesting place to spend a few minutes sheltering from the weather or waiting for your ferry
Very informative, many interesting artifacts.
Good collection of the life & times of Red Indians etc......
Wonderful museum and everyone was so helpful.
What an amazing place we loved our time here and a real eye opener as to the amazing skills and craftsmanship of the native Americans of South to North America. Beautiful artifacts and really well presented. The shop looks like a museum itself such is the quality of the products displayed.
GREAT NEW MAJOR EXHIBIT WITHTHE WORKS OF TD CANNON!!. IT RUNS TO SEPT 16. It's permanent exhibits with Indian artifacts is nice but pretty small. The best part is the building itself; an old beaux arts building with beautiful, ornate masonry and statuaries including four statues by Daniel Chester French, who did the statue of Lincoln in the Washington DC memorial.
This museum is absolutely beautiful, it's free and they have tours, the lady that gives the tour is amazing. So much to see and so much to learn, there is so much to learn about our history and that of our ancestors. Next time I plan to bring my son, they have a workshop for kids too!
The staff and volunteers were friendly and helpful. The exhibits were interesting and insightful.
Old fashion styled exibition, but interesting to see clothing and ceremonial items. They should have focused more on the northamerican tribes. Perfect place to visit after your visit to Ellis Island ferry. Nice restrooms, always good to have these around
Nice place to walk around. Loved the ceiling artwork and architecture
What a great experience! It has long and busy lines in the weekends! Never go there in the weekends.
It is very informative, and a great place to learn history of the Native American ways of life and culture.
Interesting artifacts from the American Indians.... also, interesting artifacts from the Tiano Indians, that Puerto Rico can relate with.... I found the whole experience as satisfying and enjoyable !!
A tiny little museum. They have less artifacts than the Museum of Natural history, and what they do have is badly described, and given without context. Just visit the Native American exhibits in the Natural History museum and the Met for a much more educational, interesting and impressive experience. The architecture of the building is incredible though.
An outstanding and beautiful museum featuring contemporary and historic Native American artists! Highly recommended!
A must see no matter when you go, great exhibits and really good gift shop, everything from kids to adult from novice interest to collectors pieces will you find in the gift shop. There is no way of describing what you will see in the exhibits as the exhibits often change. It's nice to see exhibits from way back when as well as seeing the contemporary art work and crafts of today's natives/indigenous peoples. So go to the museum of the American Indian and enjoy as I know you will. All ages are welcome!! P.S. Keep in mind upon entering everyone must pass through the metal detector and wand when neccessary.
No lines at all. Amazing exhibits. The facilities need a little upgrade.
well i discovered this place by accident i mean it was not on my plan i just saw it when i got out the metro station during my trip to see the statue of liberty . i recommend this place for tourist who would like to see the culture of native Americans in person many nice and valuable exhibits are shown there.
If in New York this is a "don't miss". Admission is FREE. The museum offers an opportunity to learn about Native Americans from all over. The artifacts housed here are vast and incredible pieces of history. I highly recommend a guided tour as you will receive a lot of additional historical details that are not on the plaques.
Spent the day down Downtown New York City and were very happy and grateful to visit this amazing museum--for free!!! We saw the Transformer: Native Art in Light and Sound exhibit, with another family and our 5 (combined) kids, and it was just mind-blowing! We all had such a back--and loved it!!!
Loved this museum, Free, its small, but amazing, remember dont bring liquids, here you will learn and interact no only shows you but teaches you so much of Americas natives
Must visit place to understand history of America, amazing craft work collection made by Indians lots of good displays museum by itself is just wow
This is an underappreciated museum - it's a special place. Not only is the building itself beautiful and contemplative, the exhibits are really interesting. They focus on Indians from all the Americas (not the U.S.). And if you're hungry, be sure to check out the cafe - it's one of the best museum cafes around, offering food inspired by various regions of American Indians. We loved it!
I grew up in NYC. I have always loved museums. Now that I am an adult I love taking my son. This museum offered one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had the misfortune of encountering. I am pretty easy going. I don’t expect or need much. But from the moment you enter this dreary place the security greet you with a bad attitude. They don’t smile. When they give you an instruction it’s impatient and boarderline rude. May the force be with you if you ask a question. They did not mention the kids activities... which we ended up skipping out on because I could not wait to leave the place and hang out in the park. I do not care if it is free. I would rather pay and have an enjoyable experience.
I wasn't quite sure what to exspect considering entry was without ticket. It was a beautiful two hours well spent. Very pleasant staff.
Once you get in, the actual displays are amazing. I would recommend coming early so you don't miss anything and take as much time looking at things as you need. The museum is located in the historical US Custom House which is a true architectural gem. The permanent exhibits at the Museum are an interesting collection of Native American artifacts. They have temporary exhibitions too so it's great to stop by once in a while. Also the tickets are suggested price, so you can pay whatever you want if you don't purchase tickets online.
A treasure. Great Native American exhibits and art.
One of the best museums of NYC I love it
Extremely impressive free museum and should be at the top of your list if you're interested in history/art and need something to do without spending a fortune. If you've never visited the area, Battery Park is next door and the museum lives in the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House which is a historical treasure that has been historically preserved. The museum shares its space with the National Archives so be prepared for a higher than normal amount of security for a museum with metal detectors and x ray machines for bags. Easy to spend 1-2 hours without realizing it. There's even a small interactive family area/learning center that is geared more towards children but is still fantastic and enjoyable as an adult and was the highlight of the entire museum for me. Getting to experience how Native American Indians experienced life and how they hunted or trying to beat my best time for amount of time spent balancing a kayak. This is a must visit for the free price of admission and does not dissapoint!
Great day with the classroom. Very informative and our tour guide was great at meeting the kids at their learning level.
Impressive, historical monument. Used to be the US Customs House.
Enjoyed visit to the this museum. Has so much to learn about the American Indian. You are able to check out instruments of music, you have hands on some of the exhibits. Beautiful museum & a huge display of art work, artifacts & so much more.
Indian exhibits are thorough and beautifully presented. And the architecture of the building itself was just amazing.
Taíno exhibit is a must-see! Also Taíno art & books available in gift shop!
We came in before closing. The attendants were not very nice. They have very high security there. I would have loved to explore more but wasn't really a good fit for my younger kids.
This place is on the Grey Lines Hop On Hop Off route. Free , convenient and moderately interesting. Needs better leaflets to explain to visitors. Could be more satisfying if explained well. When I. NY never miss the Hop On Hop Off bus. Buy the 24 hour, 3 circles tour.
Free, easy to access and always has great exhibits on display
Always interesting and respectful. Great educational programs.
This is something to stop and do when you have time. Very enlightening experience.
The current America on New York is not just the way we see it today , it's much much more richer and older than the time when Christopher Columbus' ship found this 'new land'. You don't realize that until you go and visit this museum at the extreme tip of downtown , Manhattan
Great exhibits that center indigenous voices
One of my favorite museums in the city. Beautiful and informative displays. Rotating history/display in the oval room are always good. New gift shop with a lot more space with beautiful items at reasonable prices. Definitely worth 2-3 hours of your time!
Unexpectedly charming historical museum offers a variety of artifacts and art. Small enough to visit in an hour or two, so a manageable place to add to your itinerary. I especially enjoyed the temporary art exhibit of a native American painter. The museum has a lovely rotunda in the middle with beautiful frescoes on the upper walls.
It is a nice museum. Very interesting. I just didn’t like the security guards from the 1st level, the same people who are in the airports, arrogant and unkind. Otherwise the museum very informative and as always the architecture amazing. A lot of information for people in the Caribbean.
Perfect size and a great break from July heat in the city, also the gift shop was impressive.
The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NYC) is a great visit. Just like other Smithsonian museums in Washington DC, it's free. Just down from the Wall Street Bull and across from Battery Park. Relax, sit down and enjoy the view of the Statue of Liberty.
Love the taino exhibit. Too bad the tee pee hit was taken to DC.
The Taino exhibition was excellent
A lovely, free museum very close to the line for the Statue of Liberty boat. In an amazing historic building.
Was pretty empty when I went, but still very interesting.
This was a really nice stop during a business trip, exploring near my hotel between meetings. Really quick entry, no fuss, nice, funny security guards. A little cold inside but the exhibits were captivating enough to distract from that most of the time. There's just so much to try to get through in a couple of hrs. I wish I had more time but the light and sound section was intriguing.
First time visiting an entire museum dedicated to American Indians! It was fascinating and I loved every minute spent here. I got to build an igloo, practice kayaking, and learn about various aboriginal dances. The exhibits were beautiful and full of information and art and best of all it's free to visit!
It was great to learn about another culture and the workers were very nice
I was hoping for more but what is there is good
