Great staff! Annie is a gem! This is a fun trip to Astoria and definitely worth it! Loved the Muppet/Jim Henson exhibit!

Andrea McDonald

Very educational place to visit it shows you how far we've come technology-wise on cameras and moving images

Devin McLaughlin

Yes, it's a little out of the way for the average tourist doing the Manhattan shuffle. But do yourself a favour and take a cab out to Astoria to see this place. The Museum of the Moving Image occupies such an interesting niche in terms of its collections, and much of it is not to be missed. Innovative interactive displays make for a fantastic visit for all ages. Try out video games from throughout the last few decades, dub your voice over film, play with sound effects from popular film and television, and even make your own stop motion film! Special attention should be paid to the Jim Henson's exhibit, which was a delightful look and the man's creative talents and journey.

Lisa Schain

Great place to spend some time. You need about three hours to do it properly. The cafe does not have much of a selection but there are places to eat within walking distance.

you2dum

It's exciting to walk by it does have a sense of a movie studio.

Anthony Castanon

Fantastic museum covering all aspects of filmmaking. Wonderful exhibits and artifacts. I am considering getting a membership to go to their screenings. A good way to enjoy a Saturday afternoon

Chris De Leon

Excellent museum that is fun for the entire family. The Jim Henson exhibit was great and very large, very impressive. The video game as a sport exhibit was very fun and the other exhibits were very interactive and interesting.

Andrew Morris

Very cool and informative museum! I especially love the section explaining all the roles of filmmaking in concise, simple terms. The history parts and interactive sections also were welcome additions. I got lucky being in Queens at the right time and was able to visit for free during Friday afternoon. Totally worth your time!

Darwin Padilla

This museum shows how movies became what they are now, very interesting place.

Yosef Yeroshalmi

Nice museum with small crowds. The Jim Henson exhibit is worth seeing

Tom Arabia

Fantastic little museum. I loved the Jim Henson exhibit. You can see everything in one trip, and it's never over crowded. Highly recommend at least one visit to every New Yorker.

Malte Zander

Good special exhibits (Jim Henson, glass plate positives), and interesting general show with some hands-on parts.

Mike Rose

My children were amazed by the amount of content here, we loved the Muppet display and especially Big Bird!

matthew o'haver

Fantastic permanent Jim Henson exhibit...really fun!

Paul Bessassar

They have great images like all kind of things that were made long ago in the past for what is now today, so come on down and watch the images with friends and families plus you can also learn from what they made years ago like TV, Music even puppets like for the Muppets Show, Fraggle Rock Show and even Sesame Street, so be sure to watch and learn for what the people did in the past for the future we live in now.

Kevin Chen

Was supper fun going with friends and messing around was great in the museum if you have a great humor and friendly with young still it’s great to go with some friends but not recommended if you are alone.

I was at a showing of 2001 A space odessey. It was the 50th Anniversary of the movie. It was nice to see on a movie screen instead of TV. I wish the museum was open afterwards. Didn't get to see anything, will try to get there some other time. The interior of the museum lobby is Mid century modern interior just like on the space station in the movie.

Ryejin13

This was a cool experience. I mostly came for the Jim Henson exhibit and it was awesome but came away surprised at all the other cool things to see. They have tons of old movie and show equipment with some history. I would definitely come again next time I'm in NYC.

Jordan Plews

Great museum. A lot of really fun interactive exhibits

Jessica Galvan

To be honest, before visiting, I wasn't sold out on the idea of going to Queens to visit this museum BUT IT WAS WORTH IT. It's has free entry on fridays from 4pm to 8pm too The museum is really modern, with interactive parts for young kids to try on, such as table with multiple small and simple workstations to try your hand at making a stop-motion video. Or interactive screens to see how adding folley sounds works (they had this small scene from the Simpson where you select the sounds you think go best and they show you the final product), a so many more activities. Then there is all the things to see, from different equipments used in filming through ages, to props and special effects from movies. And when I went, they had this Jim Henson Exhibition that was awesome (the muppets, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal). Don't know how long will be there. If you love movies, it's worth making a trip there!

Laroi Lawton

An exciting museum to visit even though I was expecting a larger venue. Best time to visit is during week. From old films to the present. This spot hss something for all ages.

Dan

This place is great! A complete blast from the past that never gets old due to the changing exhibits. Very cheap and even cheaper for students.

Nadine Balgley

This is a great experience to see the history of movies and television. The Jim Henson exhibit is amazing. It is a great learning experience for young and old and brings back great memories of the early days of T.V.

Laurel Gonsalves

Always an interesting -and diverse -bunch of curated films offered. (I didn't go to recent exhibits, just the films.)

Rifhat Wahid

Fun place to visit in Queens. We stayed at the Paper Factory Hotel. So great to walk down and visit. Plenty of things to see. Only need a couple of hours. Not far from Metro Manhattan. Nice restaurants nearby and a cinema. Good exhibits to see. Worth the visit.

Sam WongBal

Exceptional experience at a very reasonable price (only $15). Clean restrooms and free bag check. Plenty of fun and interactive exhibits. Special Jim Henson exhibit was very exciting. Highly recommend!!!

Barry Schmell

Absolutely amazing museum. So much to see and experience. I loved the Behind the Scenes exhibit on the 3rd floor. Great collection of original equipment of all sorts as well as interactive experiences to learn from. But I must admit, my favorite section was the Jim Henson exhibit, having grown up with The Muppets and Sesame Street.

Alex Jasen

The stuff they had was kind of cool. However, instead of having all of cinema history, it was really mostly just the 20's-40's. This was kind of a let down as there's barely mention of Kubrick, Spielberg or even Hitchcock. I will update my review once I watch a screening here.

Torbjörn Hansson

This is really a hidden gem of New York! I was really amazed by all props labs and fun for the kids. The Jim Henson exhibition was really intriguing.

Nikki J

Very informative & educational about the origin of film making, puppetry, the life of Jim Henson, and origins of SFX makeup in film. The feel was nostalgic, and beautiful white interior. The venue space for events is simple and sleek just like the rest of the entire museum. Would definitely return!

Rina Lopez

Never heard about the Museum of the Moving Image, and went there for a private event. The neighborhood was nice and easy to find parking nearby. This museum gave me a feeling like MOMA, Museum of Modern Art. Very special architectural design, great lobby and great exhibitions. They even have a tremendous Hall that capable to seat almost 200 hundred people with big screen and stage. They also have a nice backyard and prefect for happy hour and mingling. Good choice to rent for a private event and much more interesting than those catering hall or banquet places.

There are lots of wonderful things we could be impressed and we can see the process to make masks using in movie industry, even custome and traditional clothes. In addition, there are several building's miniatures with awesome architectures that actually used in movies. It is quite amusing and interesting. I recommend this museum:-)

Thomas Hartfield

Highly recommended for anyone with a diverse curiosity in modern communications and entertainment. So many great exhibits and I ran out of time to even give all of them the attention I wanted. I will visit again.

New Yorker

Very interesting and awesome things you can see. It is give me nostalgia mood! Highly recommended!!!

Johnny Zito

I really really love it here. Amazing exhibitions. All must-see! Excellent selection of films screening in a gorgeous, pristine and comfortable theater. Their shop has wonderful books and merchandise. Chill cafe/lounge Easy to get to by public transportation. Polite and welcoming staff. Go now. You deserve to have a wonderful experience

Stuart Ramsey

Fantastic place to visit if you are remotely interested in TV, Movies, video games or Jim Henson. We loved it so much we went twice!

Bob Barzyk

Put aside 3-4 hours if you really want to take it all in and explore. So interesting and so many things to see and participate with. I once visited a long time ago and it's now become a beautiful place with lots of fun things to do, even with children. The Jim Henson Muppet exhibit is fascinating.

Jennifer M. Acosta

Always a good time. The museum was shut down for my husbands department at Columbia university. They celebrated their annual gala here. What else could you ask for food, drinks, music and an interactive learning experience.

Alina Ioana

It's an amazing place. A lot of historic "souvenirs" are here from pages of original screenplays to the original clothes worn in different movies, from posters to little stages and so so so much more. It is one of my favourite museums I've ever visited in the whole world. P.A. Staff are really kind and toilets are spotless.

manujimi

Amazing museum that's very interesting. Helpful employees and great facts. Would de definitely recommend.

Michael Gabriel

It was a fun place to go. Brings you back into time with the muppet attraction. Actually all of the items in the museum were very enjoyable and it was a great learning experience. The cookies at there food stub were also very good

Mark Kibler

Was only able to make it there for about a hour but still so many amazing things about film history and evolution. Need to go back and spend a few hours to really absorb it all in

Shauna Lacoste

Worth the visit even just for the Jim Henson exhibit, but there's a lot of other cool retro tech and explanations of the nuts and bolts of video/film entertainment of all kinds. One of the most enjoyable displays was the sportscast video wall, where they showed the shot caller directing cameramen and choosing which angle to broadcast in real time!

Courtney Gaertner

Nothing really mindblowing, except Jim Henson exhibit. Mostly interesting memorabilia...oh, and old video games that may or may not work. For me, not worth $15.00 and a special trip from Manhattan. But, I do hear that they show some great movies in their theater and the place is clean and well organized.

Mark Kurtz

This is an awesome interactive museum in Astoria, Queens. It has lots of hands-on exhibits that are fun for kids, teens, and adults alike. It's not as well-known as the Manhattan museums like the MoMA, Met, Whitney, Natural History, etc, but I always have a fun time when I go with my family. Many tourists I've spoken to find it more enjoyable than those and a highlight of their NYC holiday. It's free on Fridays from 4-8PM, so that's when I'll typically go.

Morgan Black

A great place to learn about the history of cinema and the techniques used in producing a movie. The Jim Henson exhibition is a real treat to see and during our visit there was added Dark Crystal awesomeness to see. There is something here for the casual film fan or the hardcore movie nerds including a number of interactive display pieces and very informative staff. I would say they only negative was that there was a lack of related items in the shop as the majority of items were generic items you would get in any comic book shop. Nothing specific to the great pieces on display, especially the Jim Henson stuff.

Rich B

Amazing, a must see especially if you're a Henson fan.

ambu

Nice modern museum with lots of interactive activities to do. Highly recommend for families and groups. Their screening ticket covers the museum entrance fee as well.

Annie Wu

Joshua Grebler

Loved the Jim Henson exhibit! The curation is lovely, but the logistical flow could be improved. That being said, they do a lot with limited space. A must see.

Py Humston

It is very unique here. It shows everything from cameras, lights, sounds, posters to make ups. It is very, very cool! I think it is great for all ages to explore.

Mickey Dunne

I have gone to a few exhibits here over the years that have been enjoyable as well as seeing some films that were showing here. Cool history of video games, even got my 80+ year old grandfather to play an arcade game for the first time in his life, and he loved it!

Alison Tighe

Beautifully well done display and wonderful staff

Zara Choudhary

Nice place to bring kids and see history of how entertainment has changed. Very nostalgic for adults. Restorant doesn't have many choices.

Shanna Crumley

My sister, a film major, and I learned a lot about lighting, cameras, screenwriting, set design and so much more. I think our favorite part this time was the history of stage makeup--seeing Chewbacca up close, learning how much work went into Citizen Kane's face and developing an appreciation for pancake makeup. Definitely recommend, especially if you can get there for the free Fridays admission.

Kailah Ayres-Tuttle

Intriguing museum if you appreciate film through the ages. On Fridays from 4pm-8pm admission is free and there is free bag check. We visited straight from the airport on the way into the city. There is currently a Jim Henson exhibit. They have some very cool artifacts from various film sets and they cover several film jobs that bring a script to life.

hawk362_Prince

It was very nice, the only problem is that they moved the video game section temporarily for politics voting. I recommend thisnto anyone.

Patrick Hart

Really cool museum with great film artifacts from over the years. The Jim Henson exhibit was so awesome!

Aly Mello

Worth the $15 ticket for the Jim Henson exhibit alone. They also had a free movie later in the day. Great way to spend an afternoon

Rachael Boone

It's a museum I don't mind visiting over and over. They have set exhibits, but change a some here and there. I enjoyed the Jim Henson exhibit. It was educational and fun.

Dawid

Great interactive museum. A lot of good history of movies and screenings. I loved the Simpsons and Jim Hanson night.

Olof Nilsson Heijer

Fantastic museum, with so much love and passion that goes into this place. You are filled with joy after visiting here. The true feeling of a great museum is that it constantly is changing and that you are a part of the now. And this place really nailed it. They had so much quirky stuff and information, videos, and other stuff. Well worth a visit!

Patrica Munierez

they have some amazing exhibits here. its a must come see while youre in new york. you'll see a lot of cool and interesting stuff through out the museum

Amir Mohammed

Had a fun at this place. Really brings me back to my childhood you really have to appreciate things of many years ago to appreciate this place most of the stuff is not up-to-date don’t know if kids with so much to get it as much as adults would

Heather Fasko-McMillan

Small enough to not feel overwhelmed. But full of information and exhibits. Also has hands-on exhibits.

Leslie Strassberg

Lots of fun stuff to see and interact with. Definitely worth the trip to Astoria. Don't forget to try some of the neighborhood restaurants while you're here.

Ang InBrooklyn

Saw Jim Henson exhibit! Was never a big fan of Henson, but this show changed that. What a cultural treasure who died too early! 53, I think from pnemonia.. Really impressive review of his lifetime of work and his work process. Early concept sketches and prototypes of the Muppets, the Dark Crystal, the Labyrinth.. amazing to see how much work and creativity went into everything he was a part of. Other exhibits are also just as amazing, a trip down memory lane. Friendly staff, large layout so didn't feel too crowded even with a lot of people. Nice way to spend an afternoon. Definitely a must do when visiting NYC!

Jose Carmona

As a student of film and animation, this place is fantastic. I felt the magic I fell in love with the motion picture history. Plus there is a permanent Jim Henson exhibition on the 2nd floor. I highly recommend!
