REVIEWS OF Museum of Chinese in America IN New York

A place of an unknown history for Ms. Chin and family of VP Records, I enjoyed this event, great wine selection

Becky Ci Song

It's a very nice small museum surprisingly amused my daughter. She was born in China but raised in the US so I've always wanted to get her into Chinese culture. As a three years old, she enjoyed the scavenger hunt and the toddler play area. Would want to go again when they have kids activities.

BT

Tiny museum with some interesting history about asian americans. Felt a little pricey for the amount of content though.

Sister Tamara

Loved the gift shop!

Alex Vega

Bored, just a few rooms. If you have NYID is free. Not work the money if you have to pay. Staff friendly and clean restroom.

Maya McCarthy

Visiting this location was a very informative and educational experience. It was so good to learn about Chinese culture and medicine. There is also great food nearby.

Gee-Wey Yue

Engaging exhibitions, with guided tour options for the museum OR for Chinatown, with advance reservation required. The new Learning Center downstairs is wonderful for families. Building is gorgeous and designed by Maya Lin (Vietnam Veteran's Memorial). The shop sells a beautifully illustrated and designed Chinatown map that was created to give visitors a great sense of things to see/do in the local neighborhood - I use it to eat around the area.

R. Lathia

It's beautiful. They have various exhibits and one of my favorites is the Sour Sweet Bitter Spicy exhibit which highlights the food that Asian Americans have been making and cooking. There's a historical walking tour you can go for, yet another one of my favorites. They have a small replica of an Asian American General Store that was donated to them. It's brilliant, you can't go wrong visiting this if you're in Chinatown.

Sean Rowan

Great place had a fantastic time. Enjoyed the history of Chinese Americans.

Nino Chichi

Lots of things exhibited

Andy Zhou

Although small, this museum is packed with Chinese American history.

Joanna O

This is a very nice museum with a lot of cool displays. We went for the Lunar New Year family festival - and it was crowded, but people were definitely having a good time with the arts & crafts and cultural things. If you're interested in the subject matter I'd say it's definitely worth checking out.

Latonya Wigginton

An insightful look into the history of Chinese Americans with a really strong collection of paraphernalia that depicts a colourful and life like picture of the history of Chinese people living in the USA

Gloria Appleby

Much more than I expected. Overwhelming, actually. Learned a lot here. Left with new perspective and appreciation of Chinese culture in America.

Jack C

A must visit for anyone wanting to know the history of Chinese in America. Well-presented. Join the free tour if possible as the guide will come in useful. Certain parts of the history are quite poignant.

Augustus

A great place to see for anyone with Chinese roots or an interest in the history of Chinese in America (beginning in the mid 1800s). Many of the exhibits capture the essence of what it was and is like to be a Chinese immigrant/resident in America, and I appreciated the down-to-earth yet informative captions. The digestible size of the museum makes it so you can gain an expansive view of the history without feeling overwhelmed by the content. Certainly a valuable educational institution to have in the Chinatown area. Worth the visit!

Celiann Santiago

I truly enjoyed all the things that they had. Very well kept

Michael Kwan

It's a tiny museum that gives u a glimpse of the history of Chinese Americans. If you want free admission, go there every first Thursday of the month or get a culture pass.

Stevi Roy

If you want to learn about Chinese immigration to US then this is the place to visit. There's an entrance fee, for students it's $8 otherwise $12 (I'm not entirely certain).

Dennis Santella

A fine museum with rotating exhibits and actvities for children and school groups.

Jackie Chew

Great local museum that focuses on the Chinese immigrant experience.

Pam C

It was ok small museum. Had alot of plaque with names of Chinese people and events.

keone young

Wonderful. Enlightening.

Tori Quan

As small museum dedicated to Chinese Americans from the East and West Coast, as well as their ancestors who immigrated to America. Although it may not be big as many major museums in Manhattan, the exhibitions featured are tastefully chosen and displayed to the public. What I really loved about this museum was how it brought about the historical aspects of Chinatown, much of which takes a hard look around these days when walking through the actual area. A great place for those who wish to learn about the past, including the assimilating of cultures and environments.

PSA: If you eat at Nom Wah Parlor for dim sum, you get free admission here if you show your receipt (as of posting this review)! As an ABC (American born Chinese) this museum really hit home for me. I cannot recommend this museum enough, regardless of your race. This museum highlights a lot of the struggles that Chinese people have and continue to face in America that are commonly brushed aside due to the model minority myth. Staff is very friendly and the exhibits are excellently curated. Only complaint is that this place needs to be bigger! There is so much more that could be told. Highly recommend.

Wanlin Li

Great museum if you like history

Jessica Phan

I visited MOCA on a Friday afternoon and had a wonderful time walking through the museum with a tour guide. The museum is very detailed, each of the exhibits organized in a way that was easy to follow and understand. The aritifacts were incredible to see, especially the original ones. My favorite was seeing the temporary exhibits on Chinese medicine and acupuncture. It was a great learning experience that I never knew before about Chinese medicine and the important people who made a difference in this field. I also have to add that the museum store is AMAZING, love the boba socks!

Fabienne Gachette Fils-Aime

This was my 1st visit to the MOCA. My 6 yr old daughter and I had a good time. I enjoyed the exhibit more than she did but she showed interest. She throughly enjoyed the MOCA CREATE. We'll be back next month.

This museum is interesting particularly for me, although I'm not American, I'm also an immigrant of Chinese descendant. It's always interesting to learn about the situation back then in the country they emigrated into as Chinese people are known to be explorers. There are always Chinese people in most countries in the world, even down in African countries. Chinese immigrants are mostly the least-loved as well. Be it in Indonesia, or in America where they used to have the exclusion act back in the late 1800s and how they dealt with that. This museum, that is located in Chinatown, however, is quite small, so I feel they're lacking in telling the stories. One of the best "Chinese immigrant" museums that I have ever been to is the one in Singapore's Chinatown, if you are ever in that area and interested in this matter, you should go. Otherwise, this museum has a cool shop and a range of "immigrant story" books that I really love.

Carmen Sze

I really loved visiting this museum. At $12 admission, it's reasonably priced. Reading everything in the museum takes ~2 hours.

Circe Shoei

Small museum offering interesting and insightful information in many different media. I learned so much about the history of Chinese presence in NYC.

Jenny Kang

Very educational! We enjoyed it.

Jacqueline Keller

Stunning exhibits, reasonable admission. Could tackle it in an hour or so. Check it out if you're in the area.

Malte Zander

Comprehensive and compressed look at the history of Chinese and their descendants in the United States. Well set up and with a large number of interesting details, e.g. pictures of Chinatown being doctored to make the place seem even more exotic.

Mabel Eng

Beautiful museum. Gives the younger generation a good look at the difficult and proud history of their Chinese ancestors who prepared the way for them to have a better life in America. Free 1-year membership for NYC-ID holders, includes free entry for member and 1 guest plus 10% off gift shop.

Barbara Altman

Gives the early history of the Chinese immigration to the U S and the discrimination that they encountered.

Jonathan Leung-Nilsson

We took my in-laws (who are Chinese) here and they said they liked it but that it was a very sad exhibit, With reminders of all the hardships Chinese people have faced in America. The gift shop was very nice with a collection of various Asian and Asian-America books, kids books, toys, decorations, and the usual gift shop items.

luvblue177

It's a small museum with personal histories very worth it. You'll definitely learn new things.

Geraldine J. Rodriguez Ferrer

Very interesting and fun.

Aryan Singh

Nice place I really like the architecture

Richard Gates

A small and specialized museum with many very good exhibits about the history of the Chinese community in America. There is more to see and learn than there initially appears, so it's well spending time to read the detailed information about the items and the history as you go around.

Name Company

Very interesting!

I don't see any reason to not come to this fantastically curated, wonderfully informative, and positively enlightening museum. The history of Chinese Americans, in my honest opinion, is a history of suffering that plenty have chosen to push into oblivion. This museum is a stand to highlight the injustices and inform the public about the plight that so many, some just outside of the museum, had to go through. It starts with immigration -- why immigrate? What happened upon immigration? It shows the Chinatowns that formed in America, explaining the reasoning, the discrimination that the Chinese upon immediately faced. It continues from there, cruising through different time periods in America, showcasing it from the Chinese perspective. It displays the life, the livelihoods that many were forced into due to the racism faced. One particular memorable display was the actual iron that the Chinese had to lift -- eight pounds of solid metal -- every single day to make enough of a living to scrape by. There's also other stuff, plenty I wasn't even aware of. They have playbills featuring Chinese, they have a little display on "yellowface", which is the Chinese counterpart to blackface. They also have a whole mini exhibit on the Chinese typewriter and the backlash it faced as, you guessed it, there was racism against the Chinese. But, MoCA also chooses to show just how the Chinese reacted and survived despite the blatant discrimination. There's writing about the Civil Rights advocates, posters and magazines covering the Chinese's efforts to gain equal standing along with other races during that time period. And, there were also these amazing black and white pictures, courtesy of some members of the Chinatown community, hung up towards the end of the museum that paint this amazing portrait of the Chinese experience. I particularly loved the mahjong picture and the picture of the husband and the wife who were separated as part of the exclusion act. Anyway, I hope everyone can come here and read about the Chinese experience in America. I hope people can think differently about their perception of the Chinese, perhaps stop belittling the plight that some still face today. It's informative for members of the community and members outside. Please, please pay a visit. It's worth every minute there.

Mark Seaquist

Always interesting here & good exhibits, shows & history

Jerry and Jen Salvatore

Excellent... But I think only if you take the free and highly informative tour.

2017 has been an amazing year, a year in which the Museum of Chinese in America has grown in all areas, including visitors, exhibitions, education and public programs. 2017 MOCA Legacy Awards Gala. The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) paid tribute to the legacies of the Eugene C. and Gail V.

Worth visiting.

Jørgen Munk

Amazing museum that provides very powerful insights into the long difficult history of Chinese in America. The utter contempt that many of the first migrants were treated with is horrifying and serves as a useful reminder of how bad things can become when powerful interest groups are allowed to create "us and them" divisions. After the early history of mistreatment and isolation in China town, the museum celebrates the Asian-Americans who have risen to prominence in America and this I saw served as a powerful motivator for many of the younger guests in the museum. A must see!

Min Lyu

Happy times.

Smith Moore

I spent nearly 2 hours in the museum, and each cultural relic has its own journey, telling the story of many Chinese people going to the United States.

Marzena Niedzielska

you have to go here its such a good musuem

Nicholas Cialone

Nice museum, interesting exhibits and historical documents. A nice mix of art and history.

Wow what a gem! I’m lucky and grateful to have squeezed MOCA into my NYC visit hours before departure. It was well worth going of the way from where I was staying on the Upper East Side. I’m Asian-American and felt an invigorated sense of my cultural identity by spending even a little time here. I’d also add that regardless of your cultural background, if you are affected or influenced by our current state of immigration laws, you owe it to yourself to visit MOCA, since these laws were first passed to exclude Chinese. (Full disclosure, I was visiting a friend who works at MOCA and I wasn’t expecting to tour it or write this review. I’m not really a “museum person” and I was initially expecting to just say hi and hang out elsewhere. I felt compelled to write this review because I had such a remarkable experience) I took a briskly-paced but very engaged tour of the whole museum. Initially, I was expecting just some artifacts and interesting stories––the standard museum fare––and got much more. MOCA packs a lot of meaningful history into a small, yet remarkably designed footprint. The exhibit contextualizes stories, names, inventions, artifacts, and developments within the larger timeline of US history, which gives a much clearer sense of the immigrant story. (I was lucky to have stumbled into an Asian American History class in college, which was impactful but didn’t juxtapose these histories as strikingly.) Some of the particularly striking topics explored were exclusion laws, immigration hardships, Chinese labor as a substitute for slave labor, typecasting of Asians in media and film, pitting marginalized Asian groups against each other, Chinese biochemistry as an early treatment for addiction, and Chinese medicine’s surprising connection to Tupac Shakur. One surprising and remarkable design aspect of MOCA was learning that the border artwork of captions in the medicine gallery actually doubled as lines that connected to their respective artwork. (My written description doesn’t really do it justice) I’m sure this was painstakingly done and it gave me a deeper appreciation of the work invested into making this a compact yet impactful experience. The experience gave me a deeper appreciation of what Chinese and Asians have had to struggle against and overcome in America, as well as a richer personal understanding and connectedness of my Asian-American identity within that larger narrative. I only spent 30-40 minutes in the museum, my friend narrating a constant stream of information and insight about the exhibition. This made a big difference in my experience, so I’d highly recommend guided tours as there is a lot of reading, which may take away from the full experience if you’re not the reader type. I’d personally still go back for an unguided hour or two in my next visit, and I kind of wish I had my 20 minutes in the Guggenheim (and 20 minutes in line) back for MOCA instead. Definitely check out Chinatown’s eateries afterward, too. You’ll see the city in a whole new way.

Hayli Bazan

Great museum for a small admission fee. Lots of information on Chinese immigrants.

Robert Berry

Nice little museum. I found the exhibit on the typewriter especially fascinating (but I'm a nerd).

Peggy Phung

It is worth to make a visit. You can go in for a free gallery admission on the first Thursday of each month. (except on major holidays)

Nam Nguyen

Great little museum to learn about Chinese American history

Lynette McQueen

Enjoyed the biik signing of Bruce Lee

Tara Tai

In a city full of excellent museums, MoCA is easy to pass by, not only because it's located in the heart of Chinatown rather than the UES or Midtown, but because it's rather niche in content -- it focuses almost exclusively on the experience of Chinese-Americans throughout history (although occasionally widens the aperture to include other Asian-Americans as well as African-Americans). This museum costs just $10 ($7 with valid student ID) and takes just 60-90 minutes to go through, but it is well worth a visit, especially given how under-studied Chinese-American history is in U.S. education. It begins with Chinese immigration to America staring in the 1700s, railroad laborers and laundry workers -- all the way through to the present day, punctuated with all the discriminatory policies that the U.S. government put in place that impact the image of Asian-Americans today. Along the way, the museum also highlights notable Chinese-Americans: the individuals who innovated Bing cherries and pioneered mustard seed as a commercial crop, firsts in public service and aviation, and important accomplishments in the entertainment industry both in front of and behind the proverbial camera. I highly recommending a stop by this museum regardless of your race or age. A great way to walk off the post-Chinatown food coma!

Will Koehrsen

A fairly small but well executed museum in SoHo. There is not a ton to see hear (plan to spend an hour or less) but the exhibits are first-class and tell an important story. The staff here were also very helpful and while the Museum may not be worth a long trip, if you are in the area, it might be worth a visit.

Justin Latham

This is a small but well designed museum that takes you through the Chinese experience coming and integrating into America. The exhibits are excellent. The story it tells is very well done. This museum doesnt get the attention it deserves in my opinion.

Hilda Abadia

History and Culture come alive.

Chad Stanton

The Museum of Chinese in America is an experience I will not forget soon. The permanent exhibit takes you through the history of the Chinese people and influence in America. It is both illuminating and frustrating in showing the racism and xenophobia Chinese people faced when coming to America. With the current tone of our politics reflecting the same animus that greeted Chinese folks in the past this history is vital. The exhibit explicitly discusses how the struggle for a just society has been composed of all marginalized folks organizing together and it is a lesson that we would do well to carry into the future. There is also an exhibit on Chinese medicine in America that is great. This exhibit isn't permanent so you have to catch it before it leaves. They do a great job in discussing the false dichotomy between what we call "western medicine" and Chinese medicine. This exhibit also has great visual appeal as well as primary source material that is a wonder to look at. The artwork in the exhibit is evocative and really does seem to visualize the concept of qi. Learning the roots of Chinese medicine and seeing the latest developments in its practice has made me more curious about it and determined to explore more. The other traveling exhibit is a recreation of the Kam Wah Chung & Co. General Store. In this exhibit, you step into what the store itself looked like during the gold rush. You also learn about the business savvy and medical practice of the store owners. It does an excellent job of telling you how people who were barred from participating in just about every part of the economy and society were able to create a place for themselves and contribute to the health, wealth, and culture of the nation even while they were under racist restrictions. The gift shop also has some sweet merch and good books. If you've made it this far, I'm not sure why you're not at the Museum of Chinese America already. Go now!

fred street

It was very rewarding to have attended. Thank you.

Vincent Feliciano

Looks like a restaurant from the outside, but amazing once you find it.

Tony Cheung

Interesting museum detailing Chinese in America. Would leave 90 minutes for the whole thing. Cool gift shop as well

G Aquino

The museum is small and compact but has a good variety of exhibits. The exhibition on Chinese food was actually a collection of stories by various food experts, highlighting their personal and culinary journeys to, in, and around America. The exhibits on the past and present struggles faced by the Chinese were eye-opening and sobering. Free entrance every first Thursday of the month.

CT T

American Chinese may be successful now but only by their own lonely perseverance and industry. Shame on America.

Dirk Chin-Leung

It was wonderful seeing how other Chinese immigrant families documented their stories.

Vaughn R.

it's a great space to learn about the history of this particular ethnic group coming to the United States, as well as a commentary on how they shaped New York City as well as the United States. I also love how involved they are in the community and there are always upcoming shows that support local artists. The staff are all lovely and their gift shop is actually quite fun!

Janet Long

Very nice inside but a little hard to read some of the postings.

Justin Velgus

As others have mentioned, a very educational museum on an underrepresented topic. I would like to add that the exhibits and ways information is displayed is also very pleasing. I like the chair you sit in and are then asked questions in a stern voice as if you were a recent immigrant. Well done.

Colin.R Lu

Great museum that offers plenty of visual and textual materials and information about the history and experience of the Chinese immigrants living in America.

Echo Wu

Wonderful documentary of Chinese American's history in the U.S. The museum is well curated and is perfect in size for a couple of hours of exploration.

Jeffrey Macklis

Innovative displays and informative presentation.

Cynthea Fernandez

Interesting place.

Mark Chan

It was a nice museum about Chinese Americans. But the whole vibe I get from he exhibits is the highlighting of the racism that Chinese people had to go through in the past. I liked the Wing Luke museum in Seattle better because it focused more on life in the states than the racism. It is important though, so toning it down isn't really going to help the community.

Jerry T.

Loved it. Interesting displays and friendly staff it's a small museum but worth the visit if you are in the

G

Unfortunately, this museum is badly lit. The text was often too long and unreadable. Also, putting the displays at waist level forced you to bend down to read the labels. Unprofessional. Don't waste your time.

Craig Bossley

Superb exhibition planning, extensive and incredibly detailed information. ($5 admission for students)

Joy Liu

Small but wonderful exhibition. Worth visit

ardalan parsa

Great Historic Information.

Xiaoteng Gong

I didn’t expect this museum would be this great!!!!

Irene Zou

this is really good yall XD XD XD

kiran khan

A very nice small museum surprisingly amused my daughter.

Tim Grundhall

idk ive never been there

SANDIE LEE BUTLER

Beautiful museum. Learned so much about the trials and tribulations of the Chinese American people.

Celmira Lamadrid

Great place to lear more about Chinese culture.

Jason Chen

Really enjoyable and educational experience. The museum is surprisingly big on the inside, yoy can't tell from looking at it outside on the sidewalk. They have great audio of interviews playing while you walk through and see all the exhibits so you're able to absorb a lot of info as a visitor.

Lina Lin

the staff here was very nice when i visited! and the museum was at a nice degree! and very interesting stuff!

Chantal Emmenthal

Such wonderful exhibits

Mel Jovanen

I learned a lot on my visit

Trung Tieu

Small but informative history museum. Definitely should be included when you visit Chinatown the first time.

Lena Wu

The permanent exhibits could be better curated to feel slightly less random and somewhat more family/children oriented; I feel like some of the space could be better utilized for installation art. Otherwise, museum design is overall beautiful. I love the walking tours and events hosted by the museum, and the organization successfully amassed many great community educators. I like that there is a new junior board for the museum.

Maco Dref

I had a lots of fun there.

H Sophia

As a Chinese, I felt this visit has enhanced my comprehension towards my heritage and root. The presentation of the museum is neatly and nicely put. It’s a small museum but we spent 1.5 hours reading every single piece of the information and story. Highly recommended if you stop by Chinatown.

natalya karan

Great place to visit and learn about the chinese customs and traditions

Howie Shi

If you ever wanted to learn about the history of Chinese people in America, this is the museum to go to. They show different exhibits every few months. I would recommend that you travel here by train.

John Yee

Great museum that I happened upon. Very informative - a MUST visit!

Eugenia Snyder

Smaller than expected nut thought provoking. Unfortunately hit a tour bus crowd.

Han Thu

There is an event at Museum of Chinese and my friend host comedy show there. Pretty small comparing with Guggenheim and MoMA museum. Overall pretty good museum for displaying asian(Chiense) culture.

María Isabel Cartagena Faytong

Nice effort to show Chinese culture in America, but I felt the museum could be -in lack of a proper word- bigger. I mean, I'm sure there's a lot to watch, read, and hear that is not displayed here. However, I'm planning to go back again

Tony Iannotti

Very interesting exhibit on the development of Asian versions of typewriters and computers. Small but very well curated.

K Chan

Attended a book talk with author Helen Zai on her book Last boat out if Shanghai. It was an amazing event.

Ryan Flynn

Went on a walking food tour of Chinatown with my co-workers. It was a great way to learn more about the cultures that make up the area and sample some great treats along the way. It was a fun event and I'd recommend that or any other programs they offer. I previously watched a presentation on Chinese New Year by them and learn so many things as well. Makes you appreciate things so much more!

Heather J. Chin

Fantastic and educational museum that doesn't get enough attention from locals and tourists alike. Wonderful permanent exhibits and insightful temporary exhibits on the Chinese American experience from the 1800s to today and into the future.

Vivian Hir

An excellent museum that uses primary sources (letters, pictures, posters, videos of ABCs talking about their lives). The gift shop also has neat items like books related to Chinese American history. It was eye-opening and I learned quite a bit. My only suggestion is that they should have a larger exhibition because currently it is kind of small.

David Benoun

Good idea, but very tiny collection. Too focused on past oppression of Chinese community rather than success IMO

Daniel C

Unique and eye opening museum. Really insightful. I find this to be a very important institution. Learned a lot about the history of Chinese in America.

Allen Wong

Highly Recommend. Best place in the world learn about Chinese-American history & the Chinese diaspora experience.

Mamun Khandekar

Great place

Manisha Rose Fernandes

Great insight into the history of the Chinese in America. Beautiful things on display.

Pauline W

We have been here on a few occasions and it is always nice to see the exhibit. It has super friendly staff. It is still great for little kids but it's not a pleas touch museum so be prepare to hold their hands.

ravini singh

It was nice I went with my niece school Alice the tour guide really explain things and was really welcoming it made the kids really happy They kids were able to ask questions and learn things about China The museum had a soy sauce, chili oil, and sesame seed oil smell in bottles and I passed it around for the kids to smell they loved it They have a bathroom on the first floor and the place was nice and clean The teacher got dumplings for us vegetable, pork, and chicken I had vegetable dumplings it was delicious, moist, and had lots of filling

William Loce

Learned a few things about Chinese culture in America and they have nice clean bathrooms...lol

suenaya

The museum was very educational and opened my eyes about Chinese culture. It’s in A place surrounded by Asian culture which is Amazing. The admission ticket is very affordable.

Denise L

It was educational to learn about the history of Chinese Americans. Good museum store. Staff at front desk wasn't very helpful - I saw online there were audio guides available but she didn't seem to know much about it and couldn't answer my question on whether the museum displays would have Chinese available in addition to English (for my mother).

Kwesi Tarradath

Such an important trip down memory lane of a forgotten part of America history and the people who contributed to the fabric of society. Definitely worth a visit.

Honey G

It was okay, went with my class on school trip, not many fun things to do.

Lindsey Yang

I brought my kindergarteners to visit MOCA. My students enjoyed the trip and learned so much about their history! They had an amazing time and were all so excited to share all the information with their families. Our tour guides were phenomenal! They differentiated the tours for our grade level perfectly.

Sarah White

Interest place to visit. Nice experience.

Ali & Stéphanie Makupal

A great little gem in the city! Very informative and well curated. Learned so much! Front desk was very nice and we paid half price because a small part of the museum was closed off. Totally worth a visit!

Andrew Stein

Best Chinese immigration museum I've ever visited.

Eddie Lee

Nice place to visit to check out some historical things about the early Chinese immigrants

Michael McGuirk

Really cool little museum, definitely worth your time if you're in Chinatown

fatz kemosabe

Nice place to visit if you're in Chinatown in N.Y.Learn about this great culture.

John Mark Aiken

This is a great museum cataloging a topic missing from most Americans history classrooms. I highly recommend visiting if you are interested in the history of America, immigration, and China.

Lauren Grunsfeld

Went on a school trip with my 9 year old daughter. It was really interesting! Alexander was a great guide

Wendrich Montero

I'm so glad that institutions like this exist in New York City. It is small for a museum, but has really interesting content. The gift shop also has a lot of cute gift ideas and souvenirs.

Vincent Mei

Detailed history of Asian American heritage with many different exhibits

Chris Tse

Small but with some interesting exhibits for those wanting to know more about the history of Chinese in America.

Anwar Simon

Incredibly insightful and beautiful place. I've been inspired to research more about the Chinese-American experience.

Martin Viera

It was very nice.and everyone should go check it out..

Johnny Yuen

Great place to hang out especially on hot days like today. Family friendly and window seats to chill until the temperature drops. It's also within walking distance of Little Italy and all the best eating in the city; and, a few blocks down, you'll hit Broadway for some great shopping.

Anna W

Nice museum to stop for a short visit in Chinatown. Takes approximately 1 hour to see everything. Staff was very friendly.

Camille Daley

Nice museum to learn about the history of China!

Keith Alverson

Nice new smallish space and a good idea for a museum. The history of Chinese in America is rich, interesting and of course an important and often undertold part of our history as a whole. The permanent exhibit will hopefully grow and change with time gaining more attractive/unique physical artifacts that support the stories told. I was not very happy with the temporary exhibit about a ‘refugee’ boat which was highly critical of Chinese and US governments and nowhere questioned the Substance of refugee/asylum claims which seemed quite weak (at least in the museum no evidence was presented) A balanced historical story with opinions from all sides would feel less like propaganda and more like a museum.

Alex

Excellent museum, I found it to be very educational for a topic which is not widely talked about or recognized. Lots of interesting and unique artifacts and detailed exhibits. 2 hours was not enough for me - I plan to go back.

Mei Chan

This is a small but interesting museum. It gives a good coverage of the history, as well as interesting facts. The museum is arranged like a timeline so you can walk through the rooms and learn a bit about each time period, as well as other related facts (like about Chinese New Year, the work they did, other artefacts). The current exhibition (Fold- Golden Venture) was extremely interesting and I was lucky enough to meet the person who set up the exhibit.

Nicholas

Great small muesum with design by Maya Lin and exhibits featuring the rich history of Chinese immigrants in America. Great for a one hour visit before or after a delicious meal nearby.

Rene Klein

The museum was small and was not worth the $8.00 I spent and the $12.00 my friend spent to get in. There was not much Chinese culture there.I thought we would see the way the Chinese dress learn about the food they eat about life in China. All in all I give the museum 0 stars.

Margo Bell

Beautiful venue with great entertainment

Kaddy Tsang

A very cool museum.

chen wenyi

great

Shushana Jiang

Great coections of stories and artifacts. It's a small museum but you can spent 1+ hours here. There's video, photos, propoganda, and replica traditional medicine pharmacy. Def worth checking out!

Addison Wheelslip

A must see for any modern progressive. It took a thorough look at the history of Chinese (and Asians mistaken for Chinese) in America. A whole section on medicine. A checkered history with explanations of systematic oppression and cultural achievements. Family friendly. Well organized. Many interactive elements that keep it interesting and dynamic. If they sold dim sum, I could spend all day here looking over the artifacts and explanations. Well done!!!

Great small museum that not many people know about though. It has many things in there ranging from medicine to artifacts. If you have a homework assignment, it’s got what you need and it’s cheap!

Studio Sever

For the size of the museum, it should cost way less than it does, of give out free tshirts.

Amazing. I cannot recommend it enough. As a Chinese American it was incredibly moving. I would also recommend it for anyone interested in learning more about American history that isn't included in text books.

I went with my sisters and really enjoyed it.

Learned a lot of past

Underrated museum. You can learn a lot about Chinese migration to America here. A little small compared to other museums but its worth the visit.

This place was meh, not enough things to see. Small and quiet though. Gave me memories of childhood with the karoake and musicthough so brought back fond memories.

Small museum but full of detail! The stories are amazing, and the staff are friendly. It takes you through the history of the first Chinese in the US and the struggles each generation experienced. There was a special exhibit section as well. Everything is written in English and Chinese. It is great place to spend one or two hours while you are in this part of town.
