Beautiful historic place situated in China town. Built in 1887 Synagogue is old and famous and still popular. Very carefully maintained inside and outside. It's very difficult to have it cleaned due to number of tourists visiting the place. Lots of historical documents and artifacts pertaining to active immigrant arrival to NYC. On Mondays you pay what you wish to enter.

Gregg Lerman

Beautiful history about the Jewish journey in Manhattan. Great informative tour. About 45 minutes to an hour. Near The Tennemant Museum which is a good place to go either before or after.

Gennadiy Khotinskiy

It was ok, not hat I expect, only few things to see but you pay what you want. I wouldn't really call it a museum, more of a landmark with historical items.

Andrea Pena

A really beautiful synagogue, definitely worth the visit

Alona Sojin

This is a beautiful museum with a lot of history . Very nice place to take some perfect pictures and know more about jewish history and culture

Heather Pack

This is one of my top choices for museums in the City. Every time I go I learn something new. The architecture and stained glass windows are amazing. The informative exhibit in the basement is worth visiting after or before the tour.

Teresa Murphy

I took my 1st and 2nd grade class here on a trip about 'NYC Over Time'. Judy was AMAZING and my kids were engaged and enthusiastic the entire 1 1/2 hour program. I cannot express how awesome and interactive this program. Kids created a visual timeline with photographs, became detectives with clues and clipboards and great, applicable worksheets, and then ended with an art project. Judy had fantastic management and even came to the school to do a pre-lesson to prepare the students for the trip. This may have been one of the best trips in my 6 years as an educator. Kudos!!

Mikey T

This is a beautiful place. The building is very well kept and the staff is very nice. When we visited the museum, there was a concert taking place. We were allowed in and could enjoy the end of the concert for free. Because of the beautiful lightning and colored windows, there is a wonderful atmosphere over there. Hard to imagine you’re in the heart of Manhattan when you are inside. Definitely worth a visit, whether you are religious or not.

Edward Kowalski

Museum of what exactly? Still, very interesting.

A great example of an Urban Renewal project! A once deteriorating synagogue has been turned into the beautiful showpiece, that it once was! The history of NYC's immigration population is brought to life via the knowledgeable docent's tour! A wonderful learning experience!

The casual street observer might mistake this as an older church, not knowing what treasures are inside. The interior is a testament to New York City's ever-changing & layered history, the museum raised twenty million dollars over a twenty year period & the resulting restoration is highly impressive! Our tour guide Rachel was incredibly informative and engaging, tours are offered at various times and the museum is open on Sundays. People might think only religion-based programming is available. That is not the case! There often speakers & events covering a wide variety of topics and musical genres. The Museum at Eldridge Street is a part of a very unique block party celebration: the Eggcream & Eggroll celebration.

Le Pham

Very informative to understand early days of settlement of Jewish people in the area where now is more Chinese than Jewish.

Lynn S

This museum is such a great representation of the diverse makeup of the Lower East Side. The synagogue is its anchor, which has earned National Historic Landmark designation and is quite impressive in its own right. But the museum also offers a wealth of history and culture, and it strives to offer creative public programming. You can go on a walking tour or attend lectures and musical performances. Definitely worth a visit!

Rhea Bolar

Absolutely Beautiful

Wonderful space, interesting exhibit, lovely soft spoken and informative guide: Sandy. It's a great neighborhood, to boot! Highly appreciated it.

noloc 42

I haven't personally been here, though it's in my neighborhood and it's a great way to get aquainted with the Lower East Side's past. How they lived, shopped, and grew to what is one of the most popular places to visit and enjoy! They really did a great job reconstructing old style apartment etc... You just won't lose anything at all taking the tour.

Sharon Marsh Roberts

Nice museum

Andy Ebbin

Beautiful old synagogue with informative tour guides. They also have a video about the refurbishment of the building which is very interesting.

Boo Boo

Fabulous, cultural, and historical

Alexa Rain

Love the architecture

David Papoular

This synagogue has been restored to its glory and is very beautiful, and it includes an astonishing contemporary stained glass window by Kiki Smith. But touring the building is only the beginning: the museum's curators are living encyclopedias of Jewish history in New York, of the Lower East Side and its gossip, and of Jewish Humour! They are more than happy to share their knowledge.

G Aquino

Came here for the synagogue and it did not disappoint. It is breathtakingly majestic. One does not need to be religious to appreciate it and the free guided tours are offered only to provide context. The staff are friendly and always ready to answer questions. Pay-as-you-wish every Monday.

Crissi Beth

Gorgeous synagogue. Monday is "pay as you wish" day. Definitely worth a visit.

Justin Velgus

I could feel the spiritual energy inside. A very special place I am happy is preserved and shared for current and future generations! Staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and polite.

Yehuda Benjamin

This is a ancient shul and it is very well kept unfortunately the people that run the museum don't know halachos too well and they let the tourists play with the sifrei torah they don't realize that it's not a tourist attraction it has kedushah and you have to treat it with respect and awe also they allow people to come into the shul that aren't properly dressed

Sergey Burstein

Great museum

stephanie cohen

What an amazing place to visit. The tour was absolutely wonderful with so much information. The history is interesting and the building itself is a work of art. Photos dont do it justice.

Jenan Wood

Amazing slice of Jewish and New York City history hidden away in Chinatown--of all places in New York City. Its a crowd relief from the usually pricy tourist attractions in the five borough of NYC. There are really knowledgeable and friendly museum guides who will narrate each aspect of the exhibits. This small culturally historic museum is a must visit!

Facinating history and an amazing restoration

Gyorgy Valyi

I visited years ago the China town Synagogue and museum built at the end of 19th century. I found the building is well kept and operated. The lady we got as guide was very kind, attentive most informative and ready to answer any questions from international visitors. We got to know that the Synagogue was not a worship place only, it also rendered services to immigrants as a travel office, legal assistance point, loan bank, general and language school etc. primarily in the first half of 20th century. The local Jewish community did it best to assist people already arrived or would be immigrant family members or friends mostly from Eastern Europe. The tour in the Synagogue might take minimum 1.5 hours. #synagogue

Mark Sherry

A transcendent experience. Totally amazing, one can almost go back in time here and feel the past. Hear the prayers, and listen to conversations a hundred years old. If you came from somewhere else come here, you will feel at home no matter what or who you worship. Highly recommended!

Thomas Eldridge

A must see on the trail of the immigrant story. I found it as important as Ellis island as far as the new your story goes

Paul George

Amazing slice of jewish and new york history hidden away in Chinatown. Its a relief from the usually crowded tourist attractions of new york. There are really knowledgeable guides who will tell you stories about each aspect of the place. Must visit!

TAO LIN

Some cultural relics are very well preserved and are a serious museum

Ursula Melendi

Old NYC synagogue on the Lower East Side with beautiful stained glass windows offering guided tours of the museum. The latter gives insights into the history of immigrants who called this synagogue their home of worship. A small gift shop is also on the premises.

Nino Cosoleto-Miller

It's hard to encapsulate the beauty and excellence of the experience I had here in words. It truly is a treasure, to be enjoyed not just by those of Jewish heritage, but by all people. We decided to hike on over here just because we had a few hours to kill, and we were so thoroughly glad we did. As soon as we walked through the door, we were greeted by friendly people. We signed up for the tour, which was very reasonably priced at only $14 per person. Then we were asked if we would like to view a short film while we waited the 30 minutes for our tour to begin. We accepted of course, and were treated to a private showing of a very nice video that explained the background of the Eldridge St Synagogue, its lapse into disrepair, and its glorious restoration into the breathtaking museum it is today. After the film was over, we perused a small gallery until the tour began, and that was the start of the REAL magic. Our tour guide's name was John, and he really made the experience fantastic. He was very knowledgeable and eloquent, very polite and never condescending to us, which I especially appreciated because I know next to nothing about Orthodox Judaism. Yet he was there to educate me, and explain everything in a way that was concise, easy to understand, and respectful to all. Our tour took us through the basement, which was where the congregation worshipped when the main sanctuary was closed down, up the stairs to the main floor, now painstakingly restored to its original handcrafted grandeur, and finally up into the balcony level, from which we could survey the building in its entirety. I won't repeat here any of the interesting information I learned while I was at the Eldridge St Museum, as I could never do justice to the perfection that was John's tour. All I can say is that I strongly suggest that you go and take the tour yourself. In closing I would like to state that I am not a religious man, and I'm a Gentile to boot. I rarely visit sacred spaces. But while I was here, the beauty of the building, the quality of John's oration, and the sense of history that saturated the entire monument instilled in me a very strong spiritual feeling. Even now, recounting the experience, I feel a bit emotional. The importance of history, the understanding and overcoming of obstacles, and the unity of all humankind are showcased in a very tangible way here. Bravo to John, and long live this marvelous place.

Vera Berezovich

Went there to catch the Opera. Amazing show. Very unique and well preserved decor

Menachem Danishefsky

The synagouge is beautiful and the programming is thoughtful. The staff is warm and accomodating. The venue is a bit narrow for planning a family outing with small children. Recommended as a stop in a broader visit to Lower East Side/Chinatown.

Fascinating view of a vanished society. Learning about the Jewish immigrants who settled in this part of Manhattan and helped to build New York into the city it is today was really interesting. The synagogue is beautiful, and even the story of its restoration and renewal is amazing. The tour lasts about an hour or so, but you really learn a lot. The exhibit in the basement about the Jews of Harbin is interesting as well.

Andrei Popa

Really good experience, tour was awesome

Yoon Yeong Choi

“Mesmerizing stained glass, never miss it!” Located in Chinatown, Eldridge Street Synagogue may be the most beautiful synagogue in New York. Especially, never miss the main stained glass which was added in 2010 during its restoration. I've seen many stained glassed while traveling America, but haven't met such one. Amazing. When I first entered into an entrance, I thought $14 admission fee is a little bit too much for its small size. It changed as going up to the main floor and seeing a sea-like blue stained glass. The building is not so big like St. Patrik Cathedral or E-Manuel Temple on 5th Ave so one can look around in 20 mins if you walk fast. But I spent almost 2 hrs just looking all the stained glasses and delicate ornaments. Just walk through the nave or sit on it for a while and appreciate its beauty.

Eve Wurtele

An eclectic and lovely synagogue, recently restored with a modern vibrant stained glass window added. Beautiful. Fine tour telling the history.

A fascinating insight into Jewish immigration and life in New York over the past. Our guide was very friendly and welcoming and extremely informative. The building has been beautifully restored and I would thoroughly recommend a visit to this hidden gem.

We liked the way it is preserved. We come from Cochin, Kerala, India... There is also Jewish synagogue. So we became interested. The colour stained glasses, numbered seating arrangement lighting etc are kept intact.

What a fabulous gem full of NYC and Jewish history! Must see! The tour guide, Herb, was super amazing. Want to be back again and absorb more ❣️

amy krakow

Magnifient restoration of a shul - a synagogue- when the lower East side was home to probably hundreds of thousands of Yiddish speaking Jews from the Pale of Settlement more about the Museum at Eldridge Strewt later. Have much to write

Joseph Katz

What a fabulous museum! My family played an important role in the hay day of this synagogue. The museum has done a remarkable job at both sustaining and restoring the Synagogue's most magnificent edifice and at teaching the history of the community which built the Synagogue. The guides are extremely informative and there are few landmarks in the City, artistic, and religious which can compare to the Eldridge Street Synagogue.

Jerry Silver

Beautiful restoration of a historic synagogue and a nice look back on the history of Jewish immigrants in NYC. Tour provided by a local resident was very engaging. The stained glass window by Kiki Smith and the accompanying photo gallery documenting its creation are highlights.

I have visited the Eldridge Street synagogue and museum twice. My first visit was an in-depth tour of the history and restoration of the shul, my second visit was a wonderful Klezmer concert performance in the main sanctuary. There is also a lot to do in the area, 2 Kosher restaurants in Chinatown.

Gaurav Pokar

Heather Ford

Such a beautiful museum! I went during their Eggrolls, Eggcreams, and Empandas festival.

Leslie Kaplan

Really enjoyed the guided tour.

Noah Tucker

An astonishing restoration that has to be seen to be believed. I wasn't prepared for the main sanctuary after entering on the lower level and seeing the chapel first. The blue stained-glass window at the back of the sanctuary is especially interesting as it's a new piece - nobody knows what the original window looked like.

Paul Malpartida

Nuce history behind it and very beautiful!

G Kurian

A hidden gem in the Lower East Side surrounded by Chinese shops and right next to a Buddhist temple. Beautiful architecture with tons of symbolism. The museum is very small but provides a good background of how the Jewish community established and grew in NY. Since it is not busy, you can take your time reading all the information and sitting and reflecting. The piece de resistance is the temple itself. It is breathtaking!! There are no words to explain how majestic and peaceful it is. As you enter, WOW! The gorgeous stained window , the chandeliers, and the wood surrounding the nave are incredible. One has to sit to take in all the beauty in this temple. The tour guides are so knowledgeable and funny!

Matt Mauney

Incredible, worth a visit.

Junan Suny

Very interesting and well kept. The staff is friendly, and the architecture is beautiful, would definitely recommend.
