This Museum is included in the category of Local history museum.
Very cool exhibit! The guide was engaging; I just wish she had told a few more of her family's gangster-adjacent stories!
This was worth seeing
If you like history, then you would enjoy this. The tour was about an hour and 15 minutes, but contained a lot of facts; some known and some not. Part of the tour was spent in 2 rooms filled with apt of pictures and blurbs, the other part takes you into the actual speakeasy. Definitely worth the groupon price.
So much fun!
The group for the tour was too big. Still was interesting...
Interesting. Guide was humorous, she made it fun!!! Nice for father's day. If they like gangster movies & documentaries they love it!!!
Not good. Looks like they took wikipedia printouts and pasted it on the walls and called it a museum??
Very informative place. Not huge, not big crowds so it's personal. The guy we had for the tour which is two rooms and mostly pictures and bits of actual gangster used guns, bullets, moonshine stills, a safe(which has its own story). I got the impression that questions were OK to ask but after a few the guy seemed to give me a shh and let me get though this vibe. Answered all my questions but it's his show. All around good experience, and there's a former speakeasy next door! Highly recommended if you're into information about gangsters.
Good juice! Did not over ice & Lady behind the counter was in such great dancing spirits!
Very informative
(Translated by Google) It could potentially be a nice place, but if you are planning to visit it on your own, without a guide, you will certainly be disappointed as the museum is made up of two rooms where almost exclusively reproduction is hung. Many authentic pieces of the period are not found inside the museum. A guide (which speaks only in English) will tell you a story that is also very easy to find online. The most painful note, however, is the high cost of the ticket ($ 20) for the service offered.
Very interesting! A thorough 1.5 hour tour featuring mobsters, prohibition, and the intriguing history of the building for $20. The tour guide is VERY passionate.
Incredibly interactive and wonderful exhibit, staff is knowledgable and guide was thoroughly entertaining. Great idea for groups or couples, and featuring incredible memorabilia I definitely haven't seen elsewhere.
Not exactly what i would call a museum. A few artifacts from a safe and mostly copied posters of gangsters on the walls. Nice try but no cigar. I would not recommend.
Not quite what I expected. The stories were interesting, though. The place looks like it was shut down. Tour was cool but seemed a bit biased (for a lack of better words). Glad I caught this deal on Groupon as opposed to full price for two. FYI: This is my personal opinion.
The exhibition space is dark, plain, homemade and lacks polish [pictures tacked on the wall and some interesting pieces in cases] - HOWEVER the young lady tour guide is AMAZING..she truly made the tour! Her storytelling was interesting, funny, grabbed and held your attention. It was worth the $20 entrance fee.
The website doesn’t let you know that you can’t go in other than tour times. We got there at 5, and the last tour for the day started at 4. So even though it officially closes at 6, we couldn’t go in. They lock you out.
in a real speakeasy! so cool.
Very cool experience.
Great place. Small but really interesting. My daughter and I had a blast! Guides were super nice and knew so much! Thanks again!
Not too bad. The the Groupon to make it worth it
WAKANDA FOREVER!
Very interesting exhibition. Not large by any means but worth stopping in. Seeing an actual speak easy is very interesting.
The museum itself is free, the tour costs $20/adult and it's the only way the museum makes sense. The entire tour lasted about 45 minutes and was very informative, plus you get to go into the underground hideouts. All in all it was fun, but I don't see myself going a second time ever.
Amazing! The guide is fantastic and so knowledgeable, totally made our trip!
It is a small place, but the history of the this place is great. the tour guide was wonderful and full of info. they have a bar too.
Very poor exhibition, but nice guide
Not worth it. You have to do a guided tour and the tour guide we had was terrible. Completely disjointed discussion that you could hardly follow. Watch Boardwalk Empire and do a Wikipedia search if you really want to know about gangsters...
The best theatre ever
A 90min guided tour, really interesting!!
This didn't seem like much of a museum. There was a wall full of photos of gangsters that you can find on google. I will give credit where it is due they had an old safe and the tour led underground and went into detail about prohibition. Furthermore, there was a few cool artifacts. This tour left much to be desired.
They must have improved things a lot since there are guided tours of the speakeasy and basement now. The tour guide narrates well and is full of interesting stories.
The guide was extremely knowledgeable and it was definitely worth the price of admission.
Very underwhelming. Was not much of a museum. Even with a Groupon I still did not think it was worth my money or my time.
Cant believe this place exist and the hostess was great. Great story teller's
This was the BEST last minute decision ever! Fantastic tour with so much history and a wonderfully excited and enthusiastic tour guide!!!
Loved this little gem of a museum! Super interesting and fantastic tour guide.
Very Interesting. Definitely recommend. You only need to spend an hour or so which is also the length of the tour.
Are you out of business? Booked a 1pm tour for Feb18th - President's Day. Arrived to find a sign that museum was closed for the holiday. Today, calling for refund, discovered phone is out of service. What's up Gangster Museum? I'll give one star in the hope this is all an amazing coincidence but right now I am out the price of two tickets.
Great Museum!
The museum has the feel of a grade-schooler's poster presentation project that got way, way out of hand. There there certainly is interesting information and artifacts present, the location lacks the presentation and polish that you would normally expect from such a place. The tour was rushed and fairly bland, quickly running through the information and not giving people time to engage or interact with anything in the museum itself.
Nice experience and glad we found a Groupon for it! Unfortunately I felt like I didn't have a lot of time to look around and read for myself but the guides did and great job entertaining with stories. Even though it's a small exhibit and tour, I would absolutely go again and bring people!
Great tour with unique history.
Not too fond of tours, but this was different. A very cool experience. The guide was very lively and added something special to the tour.
Awesome experience, great guide and I loved learning so much about NYC's history! I would highly recommend you go but not with young children (the tour talks about murders etc...)
Small.
Very unique experience, though not like your typical museum. There's only two rooms, and honestly, walking in, I thought I was going to regret this choice... but make sure to go on the tour, and get the groupon for it. The tour made the whole experience genuinely awesome; if you like the city and are interested in its history, this is a fantastic bit. I honestly learned so much during the visit, and the information and stories were presented in an entertaining way, too.
Very knowledgeable guide
We have learned a lot about gangsters in NYC. Very interesting story about the owner in 1930-1940. I won't tell , I want people to visit .
Very informative and a bit funny at times too. The 2 guides we had were both lovely and not snooty at all about their superior intelect on the subject. They seemed genuinely excited to share their knowledge with you. Tip: Bring Cash or Buy Tickets Online. They do not take credit cards in the museum.
Tons of fun :)
Loved it the guy is awesome and gives you a lot of information and he does it for a good reason
When you first enter you wonder why the museum is located in that location. As the tour continues it is all revealed that that location has a lot history. The guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
Take the tour ❤
Guides are knowledgeable and passionate. Good tour. The place is haunted though.
Great museum but definitely do the tour. Times are listed on website. Without the tour it's hard to get a feel for the stories behind the pictures. Also you get to go into the basement and see all the hidden areas of the speakeasy.
Visited the museum on Friday at about 5pm, so we were the last guided group. The museum is actually an apartment in a residential building, thus do not expect anything huge and fancy. Even though it is not that big, there are plenty of amusing items inside, but what makes the place really amazing is the guide! He was really knowledgeable and passionate about the topic and kept the attention of the group for the whole hour by telling stories and interesting facts. Totally worth $10 spent on Groupon.
Pretty gangster
Very interesting museum. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and was able to answer any of the questions that were asked by our group.
It's two rooms with oictures and articles attached to a bar in the basement and theatre. Knowledgeable tour guide. .she missed missed a dew points but over all ok.
My group and I took the tour while visiting friends in NYC, and this was one of my favorite parts of our trip. The fellow who gave us our tour did an amazing job and was quite knowledgeable. I recommend this to anyone with even a slight interest in America's prohibition and organized crime. The building the museum is in, is a story itself.
Really cool museum tucked away in St. Marks street. The museum is small but the place is packed with cool relics of the history of organized crime. Our tour guide was also very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, which really made the experience. Try to get the Groupon discount if you can.
Very good place to visit and very informative.
Great little exhibition...lots of interesting facts and stories.
Good quality and interesting although limited content
Fun little place great tour guide.
What an amazing experience! The tour guide was great. Her enthusiasm through the tour and interesting stories were super enjoyable! The actual building was interesting and so full of history. I’m so glad I took the time for this tour on my NYC trip!
One of the coolest places! You learn about Gangsters, Speakeasies, NY history and so much more! And they have a great bar there and theater too! True NYC landmark! As a kid I used to cut school to hang out in the theater, don't tell my mom! LOL They have some fantastic items too and the staff is sweet and smart! Still one of my fav places, you won't be disappointed!
Must see!!! We showed up late, but it was such an amazing experience! The person had so much information to share and so many stories about "gangsters" and the crimes and their weapons. They were able to answer a lot of questions and showed us what use to be a hidden stage and hidden bar!
Note, the meusam is only tours, so don't show up too early before a tour or you'll have to wait outside. Very informative guides. Interesting history to the building and what once was.
(Translated by Google) Very small but the visit is guided and the person who deals with it has plenty of cool anecdotes. (Original) Tres petit mais la visite est guidée et la personne qui s en occupe a plein d anecdotes sympas.
Excellent museum, something inexplicable
The info was really interesting but you kind of need background knowledge to fully follow the guided tour as it discussed people and events casually rather than introducing them
Eh just okay. I wouldn’t go again- but it’s nice to experience things once.
You should stop by and see this. You'll learn from a man who is a wealth of information as he walks you through the entire history of organized crime, using all of the artifacts and other resources inside an actual gangster headquarters from the early 20th century. From real Tommy guns to Henry Hill's personally-gifted suit, the pieces alone are worth seeing. But I reiterate how knowledgeable the man who runs the museum is and how you'll hang on his every word--mastee storyteller. Then, he takes you to the old speakeasy and theater that some German gangsters made, and then even deeper into the bowels of the building to see all the secret passageways of their bootlegging operation. Incredible gem in the Bowery.
The exhibition itself is a bit homemade, but with the added commentary from the tour guide is what makes it worthwile to spend an hour there.
Loved it
This museum/experience is a nice surprise. Though it may not look like much, this museum is about the tour and the experience. Our guide was amazing and brought the gangsters to life through her storytelling and charisma. I learned details about Pretty Boy Floyd, John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and several others that I never knew. The tour ends in a functioning speak easy below, so if you're of age, come thirsty.
Not a big space for such a wide topic, but the staff is nice and it's connected to a great bar and a nice theater.
Had a groupon for admission+tour. Was a tone of fun, and very informative. A hidden gem!
Very
Beautiful
Well worth a visit. The tour by the guide brings the photos and stories alive.
A group of four of us came in from out town and had this scheduled for 12/30 at 4:00pm. When we arrived the guide greeted us by letting us know we were welcome to stay for the tour, but she was sick, couldn't talk loudly enough for the big group, and implied this would be an extremely disappointing experience unless we came back at a later time. Unfortunately our schedule doesn't allow time for us to come back, so we decided to ask for a refund. The guide advised us she isn't able to do this because she doesn't have authorization, and told us she has no idea where her boss is exactly. The sickly guide then proceeded to describe the appearance of her boss and let us know what portion of the city we could go to to try to find her. No refund, no tour, shady directions to a woman in a red coat. Tl;dr: wouldn't reccomend this.
Yes there are only 2 rooms but the guide and the stories are really impressive! You can be part of american crime history in a building who was used foe criminal activities. It is really nice & impressive. And "only" 20 $. Dont miss it when you are nearby!!!!
The place is a little small but don't let it go hat deter you. Once you walk in, you're met with a a view of old wallpaper and that smell - the smell of the American Gangster. There's a bar downstairs where stars like Robert De Nero and Al Pacino came to share drinks, at the same bar people used to only hear about. There's a hot dog company thats suddenly been revived after years of fighting with modern day companies, and that Frankfurter was WOW gobsmacking. I wont tell you any more, but if you're a history junkie, this is the right place for you. A little small, but its full of surprises.
Very cool experience and glad we found a Groupon for it! Unfortunately I felt like I didn't have a lot of time to look around and read for myself but the guides did and great job entertaining with stories. Even though it's a small exhibit and tour, I would absolutely go again and bring people!
The Museum itself consists of two rooms covered in artifacts, photos, and models. Visits are free, but you absolutely have to pay the $20 for a tour. You'll get to see the adjacent bar (speakeasy) and the spaces underneath the building. It's well worth it.
Cool place to read good history
Very interesting
