REVIEWS OF Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian IN New Mexico

What an awesome little gem of a museum!

Brian Yapko

A reasonably good museum, but with a focus on contemporary exhibits (overwhelmingly 20th Century) rather than historical exhibits. This was not made clear until we actually paid and entered the museum. I was disappointed since there are 100 art galleries we could have gone to for free to see contemporary Indian art.

Wonderful. History and culture told in art.

MS Fenton

Great little museum, with tremendous authentic native artists-- established and newer. Easy to visit, a perfect under one hour visit. The shop is also very good, with reasonable prices again for authentic art.

Case Trading Post is down stairs at the back of the museum-- they don't make a big deal of it, but it is one of the best places to buy jewelry, pots, rugs, kachinas, paintings by some of the best contemporary Native American artists. And you can feel good knowing that the artists get a fair deal and the shop itself is nonprofit.

Labeled as New Mexico’s oldest non-profit, independent museum, the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe is small but houses a variety of contemporary and historic Native American art. It has huge gallery of antique jewelry and ceramics, with each piece identified by the tribe. There is a museum shop, the Case Trading Post, at the basement. While the shop has a great selection of vintage pieces, I thought they are all pricey. Imagine a necklace for $80! If you have at least an hour to spare while you are in Santa Fe, the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian is worth seeing.

Case trading post is the name of their gift shop, check it out its great.

What a wonderful museum! A stunning exhibit by Rose B. Simpson and whoever did the lighting for her pieces should be nominated (and subsequently win) an award! The commentary by Bob Haozous was poignant without descending into cynicism and nihilism (the same could be said of Rose!) don’t miss their video interviews - definitely watch them before you go through the museum as it adds so much context and character to their works. Definitely hit the trading post to support the local artists and the museum as they have some great pieces, books, etc... for reasonable prices. The irony of buying something is not lost on me given the character of the exhibits but this place is what markets should aspire to support - vote with your money and your feet to spread the vital messages this museum conveys, to support their fabulous permanent jewelry collection, and to learn and experience contemporary culture that deserves to be spread!

Great find, beautiful artwork and hand crafted silver jewelry, belts, silverware and other interesting pieces. Non-profit gallery which has been in existence for quite some time. Very close to downtown Santa Fe, not walking distance but a short car ride.

What a wonderful museum! Small, intimate, feels very personal. Everyone on staff was super friendly, helpful and welcoming. I really enjoyed the exhibits featuring indigenous New Mexican artists, and watching the videos of the artists discussing their perspectives and creative process. The museum gift shop is a replica of a trading post. I just wish they had a larger selection of museum books.

Ali Hotto

Amazing collection! It's like jewelry heaven.

Preston Zucker

Small museum, great jewelry collection beautifully displayed along with modern Indian art.

I highly recommend stopping by here. It's not really big, so if you don't have a lot of time to sight see it is a great spot. Beautiful old and new Native American apparel, jewelry, and art are on display. The trading post/gift shop downstairs is cute and has a good selection of jewelry, rugs, and books for sale. My toddler enjoyed it, but he's quiet and curious. I don't recommend it for young children in general. There are no displays geared toward kids. I think regular admission is $14.00 per person. We got in free because we're Native, but fellow New Mexicans enter at half price. Free admission every first Sunday of each month.

I went with a group and I thoroughly enjoyed this museum. The art was various and interesting. I noticed how much pottery had changed after the Spanish conquest!! Very subtle and sophisticated before, much less so afterward, although still beautiful ... I also really liked the mural inside the entrance.

The newly opened Center for the Study of Southwest Jewelery is, as Michelin Guide would say, worth a journey. I am not kidding, any lover of fine native American jewelery can justify a trip to Santa Fe just to see this incredible new facility and display. And now, a little secret.........the temporary exhibition of Ralph T. Coe's lifetime collection has just been mounted with the vital assistance of the Ralph T. Coe Foundation. It is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see his eclectic collection of fine objects from the 18th, 19th, and 20th century of native Americans from all over North America.
