REVIEWS OF Princeton University Art Museum IN New Jersey

Shannon Kenny

I LOVE this museum!!! It is one of my favorites!! My sister, her fiance and I took our parents here for mother's day and it was so wonderful to show them our favorite pieces. I would definitely recommend checking it out!!

Manjari Madhusudanan

Impressive collections. Open to public. Careful around car parking. No worries if you are ready to walk a few steps after pulling the car. Has a nice souvenir shop. Great gifts. Museum has many events and programs for different age groups. Art for families, family day are a few to name. Small area, so have to be careful strolling through the display s especially if part of a big crowd. Enjoy

Jacque Howard

Located on the campus of Princeton University. Global perspective on art with a diverse collection that changes regularly. Parking is a challenge. Helpful and engaged staff willing to assist. Gift shop, fine visitor amenities including a audio tour.

Jongbong Lee

Great place, and it’s free to enter!

Kenny Collins

This was my first time visiting this university's museum and i was at awe. The warm welcome that greats me just as I entered the building. The amazing staff that gives me detailed information about the artifacts that I was about to see. The pieces that were displayed was mind blowing and breathtaking. Things that no one could have even imagined that existed were on displayed in this facility. The quality craftsmanship of arts that our ancestors have left behind for us to see is highly appreciated. Thank you prinston university for the experience, and I will definitely make it a priority to come back again.

mary mulligan

Smaller than others but so nice to visit Monet and Warhols close to home!

Marta Antonelli

Incredibly well curated, this little museum holds a number of absolute gems. Definitely a must visit anytime you're around campus.

Ruth Bauer Neustadter

The Environmental show is strong and varied. Very nicely curated.

Bernardo Gonzalez

Please note this review is from someone who doesn’t know a whole lot about art. Just an average Joe. However, I love visiting museums and find myself in a trance when enjoying some of the art. With that, the museum is much bigger than it seems from the entrance. I found that the museum was nicely lit and cool. At the time my wife and I visited, we mostly enjoyed the European paintings as well as African art. They also had Japanese art and protest photos. There are several helpful staff on duty and the lady (wish I asked for her name) at the information booth is very knowledgeable and passionate. Speaking to her on our way in got us much more excited about what to expect and she took her time to ask about our experience on our way out. You MUST visit if you’re in the area! Free admission!

Usman Mohsin

Its free. Worth going

Kellie Rushinski

A wonderful museum, free entry. But a donation box is available for you to show your sppreciation. This museum adds value to any Princeton day trip! They will be enlarging the building in near future in order to have space to display an even larger percentage of the Universith's extensive collection. Do visit again in the future, if you have already been!

Bruce Smith

A collection spanning several hundred years B. C. to very recent material. A fascinating museum well worth exploring.

Andrew C

Great variety and lots to see! Can definitely spend over an hour here.

Hira Qureshi

It was hard to find because it's in a big campus and there are no clear signs showing where the building is. But, once inside, it's very clean and quiet. They take security measures and I felt safe being there. A bonus: it's great that this place is free

Vidhya Vijayakumar

Great place to visit

Ernst Goldman

An art gem in central Jersey. Permanent collection is very decent but rotation of special exhibits give this museum world class stature.

Julia Konstantinos

World-class art museum that is free and truly breathtaking. Stop by if you can!

Christine Jakowski

Fabulous collection, wonderful curating, and it's free. However please supply a small donation to this wonderful institution.

Jack Gallagher

Excellent collection of modern and old art. My favorite is Hieronymus Bosch paint showing a rich man dying. No money could be taken to the afterlife. But he unlikely understands it and hellish creatures (mostly funny compared to the outlook of nowadays Hollywood stars) getting over his treasures.

Dinko Zajac

Small and intimate, filled with great art, free to visit, an oasis!

Les Gesteland

Wonderful. Took my teenage boys, and though they grumbled at first, they soon became engrossed by the paintings and sculptures on display. Spent two hours there and only saw a third of it. Will be eagerly returning.

Danae Bixler

Great art museum really interesting art and thoughtful commentary that puts the art into historical, social and economic context

Nerea Cruz

It has really nice pieces of art, we went around 3pm and the place was not crowded so it gave a lot of freedom for us to take our time reading the story of the art.

Princeton University Art Museum (PUAM) is awesome and a must visit!! At the time of my visit, in August 2019, the PUAM was free to visit, but welcomed donations. Note, the museum, which can not be seen from the street, is located on Princeton University's campus. This museum had works of art for almost every art palette of interest...THANK YOU Mr. or Ms. Curator!! The PUAM is a nicely kept secret and because of this secret it was not crowded; meaning lots of space to move about. Set aside about two hours for your visit (more time for the detailists and art enthusiasts). They had a great tour guide who talked about and tied together key pieces of art work. I am not sure of the timespan for the tour. I stumbled upon this tour group, so I stayed with the group. In August 2019, the PUAM had a gift shop, restrooms, a small lounge/rest area and coat racks. Empoyees were welcoming, professional and informative. No restaurant/food in PUAM, but plenty of restaurants within walking distance of the university. There were lots of nearby meter street parking (3 hours limit @ 25 cents per approx. 10 mins.) and a parking Garage within working distance. Again, the museum is on campus. Parking is around the campus. Approximately seven years ago, when I first visited this museum I felt the museum had really great pieces. In my opinion, at that time, I saw nothing unexpected for Princeton, but still a must see for anyone interested in art. During my recent unplanned visit, I had a an hour and a half remaining on the parking meter, so I decided to do a quick visit to the museum. I was captivated, pleasantly surprised and impressed at the works of art by African/Black-American and other American artists recently acquisitioned by PUAM: Jean Michel Basquiat, Elizabeth Catlett, Gordon Parks and Titus Kaphar...YES, Kaphar, the winner of 2018 MacArthur Grant! Also works I never seen of Jackson Pollock and Helen Frankenthaler! I plan to return to the museum before the end of August. I ran out of time on the parking meter before I could visit the lower floor. Princeton polices are very serious about parking violators!

Melissa LeRoy

This place is a hidden treasure at the university! It's a bit tricky to find, we did not see any obvious signage until we were right outsider, but it is worth the hunt. They have an excellent collection, don't miss the medieval room in the back, complete with stone staircase and entrance.

James Araujo

Wonderful and diverse collection worth a visit. Entry is free!

Havale Amsbury

more than I was expecting. Like the Tardis this Museum is bigger on the inside. Such a treasure to have in our community.

Very nice Museum, small but with a good number of beautiful pieces of both, impressionism and modern art. They have Monet's, Van Gogh's, Warhol's. Some pieces from ancient Americas. And is free!!! Totally worthy to complete the visit to the University.

Sharron Nixon

This place is just fascinating! Visited my granddaughter last week and she took me here after our lunch. LOVED their special exhibit. If you're in the area should definitely stop by.

Dan Betz

I enjoyed the downstairs a lot more than the upstairs.

Joseph Hafif

Wonderful collection beautifully shown

Abhishek Kylasa

I was shocked at the extensiveness and detail in the Princeton Art Museum. The exhibits are actually extremely good, and anyone visiting Princeton should see this museum. There's a wide variety of artwork from many regions across the world and varying time periods.

Sheila Siderman

Amazing collection for a small local museum. Outstanding Impressionist and Asian collections.

Noreen Ciaston

Wonderful exhibitions. Worth the visit. The walk through the old buildings of the campus is also very nice.

Judy Padgett

Wonderful variety of artworks

Hanan Isaacs

I love this museum. Such a jewel. Their collection is impressive, and l always enjoy the special exhibits. The current one on Art and Ecology is very impressive. It makes you think about the context of art, which ineluctably bears on its content.

Lee Wilkerson

This really is a world-class art museum.

Hyunseok Chang

Definitely a must-visit place if you are sightseeing Princeton. Free to visit, yet it’s home to a wide collection of modem and ancient artworks from around the world

A big beautiful and unique museum in a beautiful university. Very recommended

Rick Hasney

Such a great little museum, free, with the highest caliber collection. I was so impressed. I highly recommend you visit.

His FD Girl

The paintings in the European galleries are beautiful. Busy place for a Tuesday. One of the docents made me feel uncomfortable, otherwise a 5 star.

A S M Raufur Chowdhury

It's a nice place.

Yogesh Kumar Sharma

Very good collection and very well maintained. On top of it a very courteous staff.

Istvan Varga

We loved it! First time visitor but certainly not the last. My favorite was ancient Egyptian art.

Jose' Acosta

Quiet place where u can follow a guide once in a while and learn. A quiet place like church were you can relect small but quality exhibits

David Marcus

Gainsborough show worth a visit.

Rohith G

A very nice place to visit and roam around the University.. you can spend at least 2-3 hrs..

Maria Manjelo

great small museum. They have a little of everything which is perfect. Some great work and some famous pieces. Definitely will come back.

Alexis Woods

Lovely little museum, but not easy to get to as you have to park along Nassau Street and walk through campus. Also some small errors in antiquities made me laugh: a satyr is not a dwarf and wings usually indicate Hermes, not Medusa. Otherwise, a very nice museum which included Monet and Van Gogh. Shop prices were ridiculously high, in my opinion. Seek out your treasures along Nassau Street instead.

Jerrica Alford

Beautiful architecture. Great museum.

Nick T

Free entry so there's no excuse for you not to check it out! A lovely little sophisticated museum in the heart of the Princeton campus.

Emo Z

Excellent, wish I had more time to explore and fully appreciate everything.

Prashant Onkar

Nice place. It's free. It has lockers. They could ha e added a pathway inside so that visitors can cover every exhibit just by following. You get lost inside.

Oleksandr Linnyk

You'll definitely see some good art from many different cultures and the entry fee is whatever you can give. Check out the store aswell!

BOOT CUFFS COZY

Just awesome.... you need couple of hours to enjoy it

Artur Kukharski

Perfect place. It's very different place for America

Ravi Lala

This museum is remarkable. You would never expect this level of exhibits at a university museum; moreover, it boasts no entrance fee. The collections are outstanding and we'll curated. Be sure to make extra time to wander the adjoining halls of McCormick Hall- you may find noteworthy photography exhibits from Princeton's permanent collections.

P Shannon Mullen

Nice collection of contemporary att, as well as other genres.

SS Brar

Such a compatible environment of study development and research.

phoenix King97

Great place, kind people, alots to look at in the museum.

Excellent museum on the campus of Princeton university. Nice early and contemporary European art. It has no admission fee. Family can visit and children can learn to appreciate the arts for free.

Nicole Talton

Amazing museum with a great collection

Pretty awesome museum in the heart of Princeton. Admission is donation suggested. The collection is quite big & varied if you take your time. Great date if your date is into art but you ain't trying to go to NYC

Wide variety of art across cultures and time, free admission always.

Elizabeth Nekesa

They have a pretty interesting and diverse collection.

rafael melendez

Emblematic, iconic, always a pleasure to visit. This is a jewel of the university and its town. The very best in its class in all of the area. Will remain a patron for years to come.

Sunflower Prev

I felt so exciting! There’s a lot of great artists realisations!

Todd Johnson

An incredible museum and the free admission allows anyone to appreciate their collection. Well worth the visit!!

Michael Hanley

Not an art fan, still had a great time

Food&Friends

Free admission and you’re immersed in this museum’s surprisingly vast and varied collection. There are free lockers with keys you receive from the charming folks who work in the gift shop; upon entering there are hangers for coats to place your knapsacks, etc. If feeling a need to take a wee time out, there is a charming room with comfy seats that looks out onto the Prospect Gardens just outside of the museum, even in winter it is a stunning grove of ancient trees to slowly meander.

Mike Young

Very awesome museum

Divideby4 Tarnation

Great museum with lots of various historical artifacts. Great to go, and is also free. Includes a lot of different Mayan,Chinese, Greek and Roman artifacts and also various paintings. Not super big, unless you are into paintings. Probably aim for 1-2 hours to spend here.

Jonathan Eckstein

Excellent for a small college museum, they even have some paintings by famous impressionists and it's free. Heard it will close for renovations pretty soon.

Sa La

Great little museum; no fee to enter and enjoy their art. I really liked the variety, especially the Christian works they had.

S A

Small...clean...and a great gift shop

JP DiIulio

Incredible collection.

Yunlong Liu

The place is just OK for arts exhibition. I wouldn't call it awesome since it is not big. But the thing it exhibits are really awesome.

Marcia Motter

It's nice. Worth a look especially because it is free admission

Carl Foresti

Interesting museum, and it's free! Gainsborough exhibit was very nice. You do have to park in a visitor's lot and take a shuttle.

Deborah Bovee

Impressive. Historic. Beautiful.

Karen Gramajo

One of my favorite places in the world. Containing 5% of every famous artists we can all think of, this art museum is awesome. Artwork from all over the world and pushing the importance of art; impacting everyone who looks into the past, present, and future.

Francis Sand

Well worth a visit. And it's free. (No parking on campus- but its just a 2 minute walk from Nassau St.)

Dave Adams

Awesome place! Great museum...free...suggest a donation. Lots of artifacts and a mummy to boot!

Candace Cabanas

I really enjoy this small museum. Enough there to not overwhelm you in one visit, but also not too little that you would be bored. Many artists and eras represented. I plan on making some future sketching trips since we will be living close by.

peter liu

Lots of great collections. Easy to access but only open at 12 on Sunday. So make sure check schedules beforehand.

Oscar Portillo

First, this museum is located in the middle of Princeton University. So you need to park on the street and walk on the campus grounds. Ask around, people are friendly and helpful. The museum itself is pretty big with two floors and a good amount of pieces. I highly recommend a visit. And it's free. There are also many restaurants on the main road to get a bite to eat. It can take about an hour and a half to look at everything. I took a star off because the rent a cop took his job a bit to seriously and I felt like he was following us around.

Rick Peng

small yet eclectic

yun-yi lin

PU Art Museum is such a great place to explore and connect with art. What a gem!

Adithya Rajagopalan

You can spend a nice half hour taking in some great art here.

Eugene Kang

A must-see if you're visiting Princeton, especially because it's free to the public. The museum wasn't as big as I thought it would be, but then again, only a small percentage of all items the museum owns are ever displayed. Would love to see the museum expand.

Nikko

Since I live 5 min away from Princeton I'm able to visit the Museum almost every month. It's really amazing, I spend hours there each time I go because of how much there is. It's also very versatile and there will be something for anyone who enjoys art. Something of the art permeant art pieces there are also quite famous and interesting so I recommend anyone who is in the area to visit. Especially if you are on a budget since it's free but donations are always excepted and welcomed.

Tommy Diffin

They had alot of cool artwork and the roman court was very appealing, but I had a guard watching me from the second me and my girlfriend came in. And we got approached by a security guard for being too close to an art piece when we were just next to the couch. It makes it hard to enjoy an experience when you turn around and somebody is still following you for no reason.

Candra Glenn

Wonderful exhibits! A great way to spend an afternoon (or all day

Michael Kogan

I loved it

Yanna Snitser

Always interesting, always something new to find

Aaron Wall

High quality collection with an amazing diversity of art given it's relatively small size. Did I mention it's free?

Nathan Kleinman

Princeton's art museum is open to the public and free! They've got a great permanent collection. If you can catch the temporary Nature's Nation exhibit, it's awesome. (All the photos attached are from that exhibition.)

Daryl Lowry

A wonderful museum that is free but amazing. They have a beautifully diverse collection. You can easily spend hours and not see it all.

Ed Loz

University museum located on premises. I Was impressed by how organized museum is as well as good collection of art. The fact that entrance was pay as you wish was another hidden benefit

Kaustubh Jaju

A place to study all types of art from ancient England to mordern and contemporary art. They have a huge collection of Roman art from Medieval times to recent years. Art lovers can spend days studying the art here. I found the scientific art at the entrance particularly interesting.

Bob Dague

Amazing installations in a small foot print. Very well curated.

Grandpa's Garage

Grandpa's Garage Studio 7 suggests to get over here and get happy. Colors are what allow us to enjoy our gift of vision. Light hits an object and the light is reflected back are the colors we experience, all the other colors are absorbed into the object (water). Maybe light and water are one in the same only tiny and yang. See what we can see to be true by mixing colors and having fun making art.

Duong Nguyen

Surprisingly great art museum and free (donations are welcome). Also it's much bigger than my expectation given it's free and part of the university. You can easily spend a few hours there.

Alexandra S.

This museum is incredible! And free! From paintings to sculptures, you won't be disappointed!

rvagourmet

A small, yet solid University museum. Princeton enjoys many works of public art and has an impressive selection in its library as well available for the public to observe and to serve the needs of its Art and Architecture majors. The gift shop has excellent selections. As this is a pedestrian campus, parking will be difficult.

Mary Rasa

Really nice collection. It's free. You can't beat that.

Jessica Godmann

Small, but has a very nice collection. This place is very clean and professional.

Ege Korkan

It's crazy that this museum exists. Such high quality pieces and really not usual to see them in a university museum that is also free. A must see in Princeton.

Dan Audrey

I love small art museums... I get bored at big ones. Princeton University's has a superb small permanent collection and interesting visiting shows. And it's free! Stop by and enjoy it in small bites.

Greg Grebennik

Great small museum, very friendly and helpfull personal.

Malolis Martinez

Interesting. Not very big, but a wonderful little pit stop if you're an art buff

Jolene Nickel

This is a fabulous small art museum with a large collection of art spanning across cultures, countries, and periods of time. I have been there on each occasion I have visited Princeton as I enjoy the changing exhibits. The descriptions of piece enhance the viewing experience. This also easily accessible on campus and free of charge (donations requested). I would certainly urge visitors to the Princeton area to take time to see this museum.

kseniya Ov

Excellent small university's museum. Each university must have!

Victoria Feinberg

What a beautiful jewel! They have a beautiful collection. You have to see it! Museum staff was AMAZING!

Suyash Sakhare

Best museum ever!

韩东宇

Amazing museum! Even more brilliant than many big cities' museum. A cosmopolitan historic museum, like a mini Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Nick Marrone

We got followed around because we had a camera so we just started taking pictures of security. The security guards are sexy and the taser wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. 5 stars.

Jordan Howlett

Beautiful area, garden and art exhibit. Check for seasonal viewings of different artists.

Olga Krejci

Great place to admire some art. It is free to attend which made our visit of Princeton pleasurable.

Moumita Dhiran

Beautiful little place. Entry is free. You have metered parking on the nearby streets. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here browsing through the paintings and artefacts...

Arcabard R

A great place to check out in a cultured area with a fantastic short but fulfilling nature walks. I dont think any of those dates are right on the displays though ; )

Hemidell L

Surprisingly nice for a small and free museum. A good collection of art and ancient artifacts. If you have younger children it probably won’t keep them occupied for more than an hour; adults can easily spent a couple hours or more, depending on your level of interest.

Jonathan M

Amazing must visit the museum

Sophie M.

Excellent, varied collection for a relatively small gallery. Usually only very busy when a touring or special exhibit is about to finish. Well set up, with stroller parking, coat racks etc. In the middle of campus, there are seats outside but sadly no coffee.

Irina Ifrim

A very warm place. For me, when I saw first time the big buildings, I suppose it waa a bog castle. I visit the University during the spring vacation and it wasn't a crowded place. Only some students.

Michael Andrejco

I particularly liked the Asian section on the bottom floor.

Ansen Cakir

With a plethora of sections and it’s exquisite paintings/sculptures this museum was lovely. Personally, I loved it and was very captivated by a lot of the pieces. Also, the staff is very professional and very kind!

Destiny Aigbe

Awesome art museum. Didn’t think it would have so much going on.

Donovan Maguigan

Excellent museum with a wonderfully curated collection. It is free to enter but I highly recommend giving a small donation or buying something from the gift shop to support this great museum.

A.K. Andrews

Awesome...Will return again!

Jennalee Giovetsis

Spectacular artwork and especially amazing that this is in an ivy league university!

Danielle Clapton

From sarcophagus to Andy Warhol! I loved that school students were there on the floors doing activities of hundreds of years ago. So much to see. It is chilling and educational. I want to go back and spend more time there. The employees are excellent!

Elliott Niebch

Good place. Just passing by with parents, worth a walk through.

Laura Chestnut

I am an art museum junkie, and this one is always worth a stop. Leave enough time as the museum is a lot larger than you might think. Excellent job on the labeling I left with several things to research.

Jared Grogan

Great selection of artwork on campus and open to the public.

Inam ul haque

Very Nice. Informative tour

ebatiz40

This is a fantastic museum. Great art pieces from Rodin to Vangough. Also great ceramics and others. Is not very large but feels right. Is also free but you must feel some guilt to leave and not donate something is a must visit.

Ana Diaconu

Very interesting art work, especially on the lower floor! Even my 13 year old enjoyed it and museums are not his thing usually!

Stefan Neustadter

The environmental show is beautifully curated. The museum Las snack facilities on site. It was a good experience.

Nicole

Very impressive range for such a small museum. Free to enter. Gallery on impressionist and post impressionist art. Monet, Manet, Cezanne, Cassat, Lautrec, Soutine, and more. Very entertaining for an afternoon!

Alexis Krukovsky

Great museum located on university campus! Highly recommend checking it out, because it has a little bit of everything in terms of art collections.

Anthony August

Some very collectible famous and interesting art on display some of it very old. The school itself should be at the art museum as so many of the buildings Ari incredible architecture

Judy McKnight

Amazing collection. Our student guide was very knowledgeable. Well worth the time!

Robert McCarthy

Great FREE activity for kids and adults. I think kids will like the basement attractions (greco-roman art, persian art, egyptian, asian). American and european displays are cool as well

don willey

Great place to spend an hour or two. Many great works, some quite famous, and broad variety.

Janelle Ntim

I enjoyed my trip to the museum. The museum was extremely educational and had diverse content. It’s worth going to being that it is a donation only museum. I wouldn’t recommend bringing small children being that I don’t feel like it is a suitable museum for children.

Diane Gasper

Just gorgeous! Three original Monet's. Stunning!

Kris M

Nice to look at all the stuff but for me personally it's boring.

Whole Cloth

Exquisite, high class museum with unique exhibits. Real history. Blend of ancient and modern. Worldwide artifacts. A little of everything in a museum small enough to take in. Free.

KathLeen Saris

Free Museum with lots of great artwork

Arie Beresteanu

I really liked this museum. A nice collection of current and not current art.
