Awesome place for people of all ages to visit to learn about American History during the Revolutionary War era.
Excellent , authentically tells the stories of our collective past , fun, esp for kids
Great historical fort, live re-enactment brings revaluationary era to life
These barracks are build in 1758 and they were used in 1776 by the Hessian troops who supported the British during the Revolutionary War.
Walk through a piece of New Jersey history. A great place to visit with a well informed staff doing an excellent living history interpretation.
Knew hubby would enjoy. Didn't think would be as fun as it was for kids....and me. Tour guide was very entertaining and totally engaged both kids (10 &13).
Wonderful museum of Trenton's history during the US revolution. Visiting when they have reenactors dressed in period costumes is an added bonus!
This was a really neat experience during Patriots Week when SO many people in Period costume, and reenactors were present. It really made the place come alive!
Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and well-spoken. One of the best tours I've ever taken.
Very good tour, was very informative and interesting.
Fantastic way to learn about history.
Park at the State Building parking garage...free. Barracks dating back to 1758. Tours are every hour on the hour, 10Am to 4PM. Start your tour by watching a short film and display. Recommend not going when there are school tours. We were lucky to get there before a big group tour the following hour. Our guide was interesting and knowledgeable of historical events.....he made our experience interesting and memorable.
This is one of the few Revolutionary War era Barracks left and this site is constantly in danger of being shut down. The annual re-enactment that is held there (usually the Saturday after Christmas) is a great time to go and see the place in all of it's Revolutionary color. Fife and Drum corps along with Hessian, British, and American re-enactors retrace the battle down the main street in some of the places that it occurred on December 26, 1776. This battle saved Washington's army from completely dissolving, was the stepping stone to his victory later in Princeton, and by encamping at Morristown in 1776-1777, Washington completely changed the way the British held and dealt with New Jersey. The Battle of Trenton literally saved the Revolution from dying that winter in 1776. I have been attending the re-enactment for over 10 years and never had any issue with the locals. Support this site by going there and if you are a resident of NJ, tell your elected officials what an important site this is to preserve.
Outstanding historical experience with talented guides at an amazing site.
tour was super boring. Tour guide spent 20 minutes talking about small pox. It would have been more interesting to hear about battles, or more on the life of the soldiers. And at the end of the tour you can watch a movie about the history of some of the battles there...well the TV was broken so movie--- what a waste of $16. She gave us free passes to come back and watch the movie---really?? we are going to drive an hour to come back? Not!
Loved it, and so did my three teenage boys. Three different tour guides, dressed in period clothing, enlightened us on what it was like to be a soldier during the Revolutionary War, use medical services from that era, and be a civilian when your hometown was overrun by Hessians. The museum features a wealth of information on the Battle of Trenton, the Second Battle of Trenton, and the French and Indian War. It's a wonderful place to learn about history and teach your reticent, video game-addicted children about the past. Be sure and watch the 10-minute video on the Battle of Trenton. It's well worth your time.
Excellent tours, volunteers, contributors, museum, and preservation.
A little gem. Gives an interesting portrait of the British military life in the colonies.
Very informative and really great to know some of the things that the Revolutionary soldiers went through
authentic information concerning U.S. history, inspirational, patriotic, connects with the younger generation, school trips, public tours for natives and foreign tourists, gift shop, authentic musicians playing drums and fifes of the revolutionary period, might get a glimpse of musical unit practicing/performing in the courtyard. Very worthy daytrip.
An interesting window into history
The actors were fantastic and catered to not just the kids who we had on the field trip, but the adults who attended as well. Very fun premise to "step back in time" and act as though it were the 1770s, as well as the idea to involve the kids as much as possible. Everything was also handicap accessible, which was a huge worry (although it is a tight squeeze in the halls and elevator!) My favorite part was getting to watch them fire a musket blank.
Really a great museum at a great price! Ton's of interesting exhibits and artifacts, as well as a great tour through the restored Barracks building that was used by soldiers during the Revolutionary War and the 7 Years War. I have been to a lot of museums, Revolutionary History is a hobby of mine, and I can tell you that this museum is everything a museum should be. There is s a guided tour led by people dressed in old fashioned clothes, the tour guide takes you through several rooms that have been restored to look the way they did in the 1770s. I was blown away by the level of detail. They even had copies of actual pamphlets that people read back then, plus things like clothes, guns, and furniture that were all period accurate. It really captured the imagination. The other parts of the museum were just as good. After the tour ends, you are free to browse around some other areas and look at the exhibits. They have sections for the Revolutionary War and also the 7 Years War (the war before the Revolution). They had several real artifacts such as guns and swords owned by soldiers at the time and an old 400 year old canoe used by natives. Also interesting paintings, and lots of good information explaining the exhibits. The exhibit halls were smallish, but I didn't mind. I have given bad reviews to museums before (stay away from the Boston Tea Party Museum, its over-priced and underwhelming). But this museum is a great, and at $8 per person it was well worth the price of admission.
Marvelous tour and very insightful guide. I highly recommend the experience to those that have children and an interest in American history!
The guy who did our tour was excellent. Well informed and answered all our questions. Nice place to learn about the Trenton Battlefield.
Wonderful history and great location!
This is the only remaining of the 5 barracks built during the French and Indian War. They have a 45min to 1hr guided tour. The tour guide is dressed in era-appropriate costume. There's a gift shop. Its walking distance to the New Jersey State Museum. Parking is free. It costs under $10 per person. We really liked the diorama of the battle of Trenton. They have a 10 minute video on the battle of Trenton as well.
Spooky place, but great docents.
Detail information friendly welcoming staff
Fascinating history! Great guide!
Cool place lots of history
Great little tour. Guide was personable and warm. Grounds are packed with history
Lectures, Re-enactments, Tours, Gift Shop
Great local piece of history. Hadn't been here since I was young, took the kids on a whim and they had a great time. A few of the reenactors participated in a speed reloading contest with their muskets for a local news crew - the winner was able to fire 4 rounds in just over 1 minute.
Wonderfully interesting for the kids. The re- enactors are full of knowledge and passion.
Very knowledgeable and friendly staff and guide. We wished we could have had more time to enjoy
Trenton was an important site in the American Revolution.
Lots to learn here. My daughters favorite was the nurse and details about smallpox!
So much history in this plave. Its amazing.
Excellent place to visit.
Knowledgeable guide, rich in history, a good way to spend a morning or afternoon. Three interesting galleries along with sleeping quarters for soldiers and apartments for officers. An enjoyable time.
Beautiful restoration and exhibits, knowledgeable interpreters and great gift shop
A rather boring little place. Would not go again. The museum, which is about a three minute walk from the barracks, is more interesting and a better use of time.
Come experience a living peace of history.
$8/adult admission fee. We had a guide introducing the history and showing us around. This is a very nice small tourist place. They have a small gift shop. It normally will take 2 hours ish.
Cool costumes and history coming to life
Good look into local history
Wife and i visited last summer. It was beautifully preserved. Our tour guide was excellent and very engaging. Everyone should see this at least once!
Building and exhibits are great. Tour guide knew more than he could've shared in a weeklong tour! Staff was great and friendly. Passing thru from out of state and not only did I get a historical lesson on the barracks, but on the whole state and country! Would recommend to anybody looking for entertainment and information
This is such a humble, but informative gem. I suggest it for anyone who wants to learn about our great state, and its historical relevance to our nation's history.
A simple few things for a Turk
Great time and good history
Very educational
Michelle gave our group an absolutely wonderful factual narrative tour of the old barracks. She was the best tour guide any of us had ever had and the time flew!
It's small, so better to visit when there's a special event like taptoe. But it's a great piece of history!
So much fun for the whole family
A Great place to relive American Revolution History
Great Experience
Great place to go and learn about history, specifically the Battle of Trenton.
Great American historical location
A true Gem hidden in Trenton. While perhaps not being as well known or traveled as other sites of significance from the 18th Century the Old Barracks really has so much to offer. They have a great informative/engaging staff who really help to bring the barracks to life. The exhibits and reconstructed sections of the barracks really do help to provide a window into the past. I'd definitely recommend the Old Barracks to anyone interested in history.
My kids love museum me and my husband too. every thing was free we had enjoyed our time from Texas Austin ❤️Thanks
Informative and fun
A nice little bit of history in the middle of Trenton. The staff was friendly and made it interesting for kids, but there really was not much else to do.
Interesting place ... Don't forget to take the tour. The staff who did the tour for us was very knowledgeable . She also was very passionate about it which reflects through out the tour.
Attended a tavern night, it was my first time there. What a beautiful museum, full of knowledgeable, friendly volunteers and employees. Can't wait to visit during regular hours for the whole tour!
Great place with amazing staff. Went to a tea and the food was delicious.
What can i say I love history
Great museum for people interested in American Revolution and French and Indian War History
The Old Barracks is a historical gem. While a small venue, it goes back to 1758 and the French and Indian war. It also played a significant role in the Revolution. It's well maintained.
Very interesting for parents and children
Very cool historical place. Guides are very informative. Definitely recommend it if you are in the area
Really neat really close
Truly historic, great exhibits
Вхід платний. Парковка велика. Красива будівля. Цікаво.
Always love their events, especially around Patriots Week
Great tour.
Nice place for kids to learn.
A piece of history right in our midst, next to the state legislature. Great enactments and events all day long on Saturdays. The actors are devoted and in character, everything from a real cooking demonstration to a rather detailed account of smallpox inoculation
Our tour & our Guide were Amazing! This place is a Historic Treasure
the staff here really appreciates the history of the building. very knowledgeable and they even make their own clothes in order to add to the authenticity
Really cool museum with enthusiastic and very knowledgeable staff.
We got to see the reenactment of the Battle of Trenton, which was exciting. The museum has a gift shop, restrooms, and rooms where the reenacters sleep and get ready for their performances. We got to speak to some of the actors and he have use really interesting information. Overall, a fun time!
Very cool and histprical place. All staff was extremely friendly and knowledgable. I highly recommend going during a reenactment.
Stopped there during Patriots week. Loved the tour!

Friendly staff! Great narrative of the Old Barracks history.
Exceptionally good museum that does an excellent job. Very friendly staff.
I was on a field trip, and it was extremely interesting. You can learn about different aspects of life in the Old Barracks.
Very cool museum in the heart of Trenton.
Excellent museum. The educators and staff that work here are what really make this a great place to visit.
Very interesting place. I really liked it
Its the original motel 6.
Amazing acting, great service, I loved it
Tucked away in the middl of Trenton NJ is this historical landmark. The tour was led by a very dedicated young man who wore the era garb and bright the action of the past to our ears. Magical
Lots of history there. Perfect place to visit if you are a fan of revolutionary history
Small museum, very well done. Interesting exhibits and knowledgeable guides on the tour
very well run.very pleasant and friendly staff-well informed and enthusiastic.well maintained.good historic site
Our experience wasn't consistent with the bulk of the other reviewers here. I was there chaperoning a school trip of about 20 very well behaved and engaged 5th graders. We paid for the regular admission but only received a silly "drafting" into the Union army, a 10 minute talk about medical care in one room, and a 10 minute talk about bunking in another. We saw no movie, didn't have the opportunity to tour the barracks. The period dressed guides were very good, but we were surprised by how quickly we were told the tour was over. Seemed like there was a lot of potential there....
Was an amazing tour, our tour guide was wonderful and stuffed a ton of information into an hour.
Fantastic Museum and Staff. Not to be missed Revelotuniary War site.
Loved this place and everyone is very helpful and knowledgeable
Thoroughly enjoyed the Activities of Patriots week.
Great learning experience for all
Great living history, great young group of guides. The only revelotionary war barrack.
The tour is very interesting and the museum is worth the time
Just an awesome place to experience in the State Capital of Trenton.
