This place is amazing and the staff make it evem more amazing! We came all the way from Va beach, VA and can't wait to go back again! Pay for the rock mining in the pit! It's so worth it! Especially if you have rock obbessed kids like my 3 year old daughter! It was perfect to add to her growing collection and mine!

It was a really fun experience going to the museum here in Franklin township New Jersey. They have a really awesome mineral collection with amazing pieces on display for all to see. You can even go down into the rock piles and mine for ultraviolet stones which was really fun to do. It will cost 8 dollars to get in for rock hunting and a dollar fifty a pound for rocks that you want to take home. I will definitely be going back to grab some more of the ultraviolet stones, they look awesome under the uv light. And the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about everything there.

Nathan Foulds

Nice knowledgeable people with very interesting specimens, most of which are for sale.

Dee Ski

This a great place to go for the family. They had quite a selection of gemstones, rocks, minerals, phosphorescent rock, and other items from all around the world. You can find your own phosphorescent rocks Ann's check them in their shed under the lights they provide to see if there the color and quality you want before you purchase.

Michael Kocsis

Nice place and great history. Try your luck finding nice rocks and take directed trip thru mine very education try it!

Jessica Hetrick

Very kind staff. I'm a member and love going to the auctions.

Matthew See

The history is good, and the displays fascinating. But the "mine" is a replica, so it is overshadowed by nearby Sterling Hill. Especially with the fact that there are still tunnles under Franklin. A redeeming quality is the rock pit out back, where you can find florescent rocks for your collection.

This place amazed me as a kid. It did not disappoint me as a full blown adult. You are able to walk through several rooms of artifacts from fossil remains to early American Indian items. Zillions of rock samples. The have a darkened room were you can see the rocks glow under a blue/UV light. You make you r way to the quarry area where you pick your own rocks. Once you have made your selection, you head on up to the sorting room where you can review your finds under several black lights. Once you are happy, you exit with your rocks. Very cool place to take the kids. You enterance fee covers the cost of rock collecting.

Go here if you like rocks. There's more to say but if you're a rock person you will be at home. Especially since they have a rock collection area with the left overs from miners.

This non-profit educational museum is open seasonally, (closed November-March) so check the website before going. If you're interested in geology and especially rocks and minerals then this place really rocks! Despite the modest exterior, the Franklin Mineral Museum details the mining history of the Franklin Ore Body that was a source for zinc ore for over 100 years. There are a variety of exhibits in the museum a 2-story replica mine that exhibits some of the equipment and techniques that the miners used and the conditions under which they labored. The real treasure is the exhibit of fluorescent minerals. Northwest NJ is home to what is probably the largest number of fluorescent minerals in the world. Often nondescript in appearance under ordinary light these minerals come alive when illuminated with UV light. Although small in size, the mineral exhibit in an adjacent room is not to be missed. It contains many superb examples of rare minerals and crystals.

Noor Q

Very beautiful museum! Many rocks from around the world are for sale or on display! There are rocks, crystals, and minerals that you wouldn’t imagine. The historical part of the museum is wonderful, such amazing artifacts, fossils, and tools. The people there are very friendly and are welcoming to everybody. I enjoy visiting every late spring when the weather is just right to excavate.

Very nice display of local minerals as well as minerals from around the world. Awesome display of florecent minerals. Cool Native American artifact display. Brought home some nice specimens from the Buckwheat dump. You can check you finds under the uv light and sort out the ones you don't want, you pay $1.50 a pound which is not bad. If you are looking for something to do with the whole family this is a good place to go. You can also learn about the history of the Franklin mine. Staff is very knowledgeable and eager to answer questions.

A large collection of minerals. Hands-on interactives for kids. Very little interpretation; maybe the tours have more but very boring as a self-guided activity.

Linda Griffith

Fascinating rock displays!

Brady Candell

For anyone with an interest in minerals and fossils, this place is amazing. That's before you consider the world-class collection of fluorescent minerals! Even more incredible is they let you collect your own fluorescent minerals for a very small fee! Great for the whole family, as kids are almost always delighted by the brilliantly glowing rocks.

Don Parriott

This is an interesting place to visit.

Sara Reddin

Had a wonderful time looking and learning about the history of rocks and minerals. They have a pit full of rocks that you can hunt for your own. Some are worth money. I recommend bringing safety glasses, a hammer and sturdy shoes. Great for people of all ages.

Truly a hidden gem, no pun intended. It is very simple, they team does not add all the fluff of a museum. Instead, they focus on the education of the site and its minerals. Yes, I'm a bit of a nerd. However, to actually hold minerals in your hand by hand picking them is amazing. Never mind, the vast amounts of local and international fossils, stones, petrified wood and dinosaur tracks is awesome. Each item has a detailed description of what is displayed. A mine replica and a room with florescent stones. I have been there three times and I'm sure to return soon. Totally local and should be supported.

N Garber

Very kind people who gave us a detailed tour. Gift shop was awesome and their mineral collection is unreal. By far best trilobite fossils and luminous minerals I have EVER seen. Good place for kids and adults who have any interest in geology .

Jay Lochan

Great place for both adults and kids who are interested in Geology

Inga Rus

Great place for discovering never seen before minerals and fossils before, but we were rushed out of the place when it was closing time as we if were not paying customers. We got there at 3:10pm and not warned that they close at 4pm. At 3:45 we were told to leave. The individual who was at the front desk even tried to sell us their most expensive all in one pak that would have taken hours to go through. Obviously he didn't want to be honest with us about their closing time and just wanted money from me and my 3 children. Very sad.
