Wow! What an incredible museum. Unlike other ‘living history’ museums this one is a true neighborhood of houses built between 1965 and 1816. History interpreters, roleplayers, and craftspeople give an amazing understanding of the small and larger contexts of early to modern American history. This is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the country with over a dozen buildings open to guests, special exhibits, and incredible special events. A $19.50 ticket is good for two consecutive days so you can come back if your kids need a break or the weather changes. Most of the museum is indoors, some houses that have educational exhibits, some are furnished to a certain time period, and some have hands on activities to try! You do have to walk outside to get between the buildings so keep that in mind. The historic gardens are an absolute must-see. Garden tours are held regularly and they are phenomenal. See how gardening has changed in the past 4 centuries and think about how we live now. Very cool museum for most ages and definitely a must-see while you’re in the area.

This living history museum crosses eras (each home or building occupies its own time). The store and the Shapiro house were great! There is a cute cafe too, and you can walk into portsmouth a block away. They do first person interpreting, meaning acting as if they live in the time depicted, can be hard to converse and uncomfortable. But worth visiting.

This place is a neat little time capsule with homes from different periods in history. They have homes built in the 1600s and some of them have guides from those time periods. The Thomas Bailey Aldrich house is a must and don't forget your ration stamps when you visit the corner store.

We went intending to only spend a few hours and spent about 5 - our 6 year loved all the different houses and talking with the interpreters. We enjoyed the experience and everyone was super pleasant.

Initially, I wasn't sure what to expect from this place as I am not a museum enthusiast. I must say they have done a good job preserving the homes and their lifestyle from the 1600s. There are actors who enact certain characters from that era which makes the place come to life. Lot of work has gone into preserving history, appreciate the effort.

A beautiful place to visit as you step back in pre-Revolutionary times. They had reenactors there the day we went and it was magnificent. They shot off cannons and dressed the parts of British soldiers, Continental army. The buildings are also very beautiful as they are also pre-Revolutionary times as well. If you want to go back in time, this is a good place to start

I love this place, whether it's summer time or the Christmas candle light walk. The ice skating is nostalgic and fun in the heart of Portsmouth NH. If you are even kind of interested in history this is a must stop. If you aren't into history it still has plenty of interesting festivals and events you don't want to miss during the year.

Very interesting little village that gives you a glimpse into the past and not-so-distant past. Fascinating how people lived and entertained in a slice of Americana presented to you in the streets of a small village setting that learned to grow an adapt over the decades. A few character actors who will stay in character of their given era and guide you through the house or building that they represent. Modern guides are also on site who give you mini tours of other certain buildings. Since it is self-guided there are no set tours and a slight tendency for some of the guides to repeat information as tourists wander in and out of the buildings. Some of the guides can be a little long-winded but I suspect it's only a summer job and not a career. Parking is a bit of a problem and construction is in the already narrow streets so it was a bit Troublesome finding the place being from out of town and several school buses took up valuable parking spots. Can probably see the whole place in about 1 1/2 hours, maybe 2 hours if you're really interested. Not sure of the exact open hours but generally business hours 9 to 5. Avoid morning due to school field trips. You can see it all in the afternoon and have time to spare.

A massive campus featuring interpretive, and interactive historical experiences. Being a history buff, I regularly visit Strawbery Banke every year, which is located within Portsmouth Village. There are so many historical buildings and knowledgeable people portraying actual historical figures from the area you'll feel as if you've gone back in time. The living history interpretors do not break character, which is really fun. There's a ton to do during the seasons it's actually open - tours, both self-guided and guided, and lots of demonstrations, lectures, and even films. There's a gift shop, a decent food vendor, and it's in a really nice area not far from downtown Portsmouth. Parking can be tricky to find sometimes. Even in the off season there is ice skating and random events throughout the cold months. Would highly recommend if you love history or just want something new to do or see in the area.

We absolutely love Strawberry Banke! We go twice every year. It is a Christmas Tradition for us to visit for the Candlelight Stroll. We love learning about the different holiday traditions of the residents of Puddle Dock in the different time periods. The staff is wonderful and everyone does an amazing job making you feel as if you just walked into whatever year they are portraying. If you love feeling as if you are a part of history and love feeling it come alive before your eyes. Strawberry Banke is a must see! I know our family will be back as often as possible. One of our favorites is the Shapiro house. Check it out!!

Really unique museum about the history of a small town around the water in Portsmouth! They've kept and/or restored many buildings and they have knowledgeable guides to inform you about the town's history and the way people lived. Beautiful grounds are perfect for walking around with family and friends on a nice weather day.

So much to see, read, do and experience! This probably would take two days to totally and thoroughly take in everything that is available at this interactive and engaging museum. The docents/staff are well-informed and eager to answer any questions that a visitor might pose. As an elementary school teacher who has a focus on the founding of America I was overwhelmed by the information and resources! There is a companion book available, which I did purchase. If American History is your thing then this is your place!

Got to tell you, to really see this place you got to plan at least 2 days, their is a lot to see. I have been here before but am now a member, my son was in a summer camp 3 hours a day for a week. I felt like we became part of the place. And my 5 year old said it was the best time ever. Many events through out the year. Realy if you live anywhere close. Consider the membership

The way history was presented kept you interested. There were various time periods presented in the houses. The roads were gravel so wear a good pair of hikers. The walking was easy though wheelchairs might be challenged in places. Plenty of rest rooms on site plenty of parking in the lot or near by. Picnic tables are available, bring a lunch or buy something in the cafe. My kids are 3.5 and 7 and they found plenty to keep their interest. One of the houses is now opened play area with kitchen. So much to see and explore. As home schoolers we thought it was worth buying membership.

Multiblock neighborhood of houses from precolonial times to much later. It was quite a surprise to me to learn that all but one of the houses onsite were built where they stood (not simply moved to this location to establish the museum), so this is quite a gem as museums like these go. In addition to the standard colonial history you might expect, they took pains to show how the neighborhood evolved into the 1950s and even what life was like then for the residents. A history buff could easily spend an entire afternoon here; it was easy to be overwhelmed by what you can discover. They usually have at least a couple of docents onsite in the houses, although the houses we saw had excellent displays explaining their construction and how they fit into both the immediate neighborhood and Portsmouth in general. This is a must-see for anyone interested in history, especially for first-time visitors to Portsmouth. Note that there is parking for museum patrons onsite by the main building (which we missed on our visit, although there are parking meters within an easy walking distance also).

I took my mom here and spent over 5 hours on July 10th. There wasn't nearly enough time, but that was our fault for not getting there when it opened. I talked to a lot of the interpreters, demonstrators and role players, and went on the garden tour, so we had a full day of learning even more about the houses than I already do as an employee/volunteer of the last four years. There's so much to learn, even if you've been coming for years!

This place is great if you want to experience history. They have many reenactors that add to the look and feel of the place. There are many old buildings to visit and you can easily spent the day here. You get a little go around at the start so you can plan your route. I'd recommend visiting all the houses though. You can easily spot places you can go in by the flags in front. We really enjoyed stepping back in time.

A wonderfully unique and interesting history museum. It's a combination of guided tour and freedom to roam at your own pace. I spent 2 hours here and felt like I was barely able to get through a third of the exhibits. This is a great way to spend a good part of the day! The actors and guides were very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. Great indoor and outdoor exhibits as well as demonstrations.

This is a living Museum. It might have started out as a collection of the oldest buildings in the oldest colonial town, but it has grown to be so much more. Here you can taste, see, hear, smell, and feel the beginning years of Portsmouth, NH. And I'm sure you'll love it.

It was interesting to learn the history of Strawberry Banke. I do wish they were able to reproduce essential moments and elements that the strawberry Banke went through. I think in the future as they restore more buildings for the public to visit it will be better. Overall the tour itself was lacking but the well kept grounds helped make up for it.

Very interesting experience. This is much more than the average historic village. Most of the homes were from this very spot. There are details about the families that lived there. Some very poor, others well off. They have historic actors that you can interact with as well. Was well worth the visit. It's also a short walk from the center of town, so it was very easy to explore this along with the rest of Portsmouth in one day.

We had a great visit! To be able to experience interpretations of life over several centuries in one museum is both fascinating and thought provoking. It was the first I’ve been to a living history museum represented that way and it is genius. The role players we met were perfect for their roles and kept in character whenever we interacted with them. From architecture to exhibits, gardens, knowledgeable interpreters, well casted role players, and incredibly rich history, a visit there is time very well spent! Looking forward to going back!

Beautiful gardens and historical homes. The staff are "in character" and supply interesting stories and facts. We were there on a very hot day, no A/C in the historical buildings. There is a cafe on site which is excellent.

Slice of history in downtown. Similar feel to Sturbridge Village or Plimoth Plantation. Just a smaller scale. The grounds are gravel and fairly flat for a wheelchair. Including the main building there are 5 buildings that are accessible. The rest all have steps. Nice grounds and most of the staff are in character. Prescott park is right across the street and Market St. shopping/restaurants is around the corner. More accessibility would make it 5 *

Great place to spend your summer or Fall weekend. Many homes with live role play. Cooking demonstration is fabulous. Musket firing demos are fun. They even have Hearth cooking classes with experts showing you how to make original New England recipes the old fashioned way. Winter brings a skating pond. Highly recommended.

This whole place is neat. Really neat. Like, I found myself taking pictures of the wallpaper it was so neat. The team at Strawberry Banke meticulously deconstructed and restored properties dating back hundreds of years, detailing how the houses were built and then restored, as well as what life was like for all the people who lived in these houses through the years. The houses are gorgeous, the staff are very knowledgeable, and there are different hands-on activities every day. I recommend visiting this place if you're anywhere near Portsmouth!

I’d truly recommend this venue to anyone looking for a spot in downtown Portsmouth to host a ceremony. It was affordable & customer service was awesome!

A very nice spot to visit. We took about three hours to walk through it all but I can see where it could easily take longer for some people. Some of the houses are more interesting than others. I would definitely recommend getting an early start as close to them opening as you can, as I noticed the later we were there the busier it got. Well worth the visit, but I would keep in mind that it is a good bit of walking and I wouldn't recommend it for most kids/teenagers unless they are actually into this sort of thing. My husband and I had a great time though!

What a special place...step back in time from the 1600s through WWII!! The staff are very friendly and very knowledgeable! Ask questions...they love to share! The actors who portray real people who lived there are terrific. I'd highly recommend the guided walking tour of the gardens on site. Our guide, who oversees much of the plantings shared tons of great information including the historical medicinal uses of many of the plants and flowers. The museum has a house on site that actually was a museum and a character from 1919 guides you through a tour of the museum...so cool!

I love this place. It is a historical village without all the pretense. The grounds and buildings are beautiful. They have a number of wonderful gardens, and nice places to sit and soak it all in. Located adjacent to downtown Portsmouth, the location is very convenient for a day trip.

This isn't your typical "museum". You'll be transported through the history of Portsmouth while you walk around to the different buildings, which are all staged to depict different times in history. There are people in character in many of the buildings, who are there to share stories. My favorite was talking to a gentleman who actually lived there in the 50's and talked about running the streets and eventually becoming a drummer. I'm glad we added this to our trip.

if you like to go back in time this is a great living history museum. i believe its about 10 acres and most of the house are where they were originally built. not only to you get to see homes from the late 1600's - 1800's the street surrounding are load with old homes. i loved learning about how this town change of the years and how people lived. i give this 5 stars because there not to many places like this anymore. so i put this as a must

We were here for a PBS fundraiser called Passport. The grounds were beautiful as always and the weather was perfect for this event. There is no inside access for the buildings at this event. Come during the summer for the full Strawberry Banke experience!

Awesome place to come if you enjoy history and scenery. Lots to learn and very educated staff. Stuff to do for the kids as well - dressing up in period garb was a favorite. One thing about a tour guide - she reported that a portrait on the wall of one of the old village homes was of George Washington, but upon further inspection, it was actually the Marquis de Lafayette. I won't hold that against them though. Highly recommended.

Very interesting displays and explanations of the area as it changed through the years from a fishing village to what it is today.

We came here to ice skate and we had the best time! They had bonfires and hot chocolate offered inside to warm you up. There were professional skaters performing there as well. We even saw Santa Claus walking through town as the horses went by with families in the sleigh ride. It was so nostalgic and lovely. It's like we went back in time! Almost everything about strawberry Bank is in its original place. The buildings Etc. The character interpreters are great. It isn't terribly expensive. The sandwiches at the sandwich shop are delicious. You can get through it very quickly, or you can take your time and really look in-depth. It's covers centuries not just a few years.

What a beautiful place to be if one is interested in architecture, history. They have restored the actual houses built during that era along with the craftsmanship. Very well maintained. Must be a tough job to maintain this. The characters from that era are seen in and around the homes making them very real and believable. Keep it up.

It is very authentic, the guides are knowledgeable and friendly, and the method actors/actresses are great about staying in character. It's fascinating to walk around the grounds and learn about how different buildings were used throughout the centuries, the stories of people who lived there, etc. Their cafe is a great spot for break or lunch. This is a great place to spend a day for museum and history buffs.

History and houses, two of my favorite things! Tour homes, shops and a tavern from the 18th and 19th century. Staff is all around to answer questions and a few role play. I loved the history and architecture of the homes. I will definitely go back.

Highlight of my New England vacation. We actually went in November and they were closed. They graciously let us walk around the grounds. Everyone we met in Portsmouth was so friendly, cannot say enough about that. Definitely want to return while they are open to experience everything. Thank you strawberry Banke!

A lot of buildings to tour, some with actors protraying that time period, and especially liked the one at the Shapiro house. All workers were very knowledgeable. Expect to spend a long time there! Tickets are actually good for 2 consecutive days.

It's interesting for the first 30-60 minutes but after that it over stays its welcome. A little pricey for what it is but if you are interested in that kind of thing it isn't terrible. It's a slow moving attraction so people with kids or short attention spans may find the experience lacking.
