American history home. Very educational. They made a point of comparing the lives of slaves, servants, and the masters. Very real picture of harshness of slavery even in the household of "enlightened" matters. Also impress garden even in fall.

Eric Davis

Beautifully restored house with lots of history.

I have visited a number of historic houses over the years, and this one rates towards the top. Excellent guide, beautiful house, interesting stories of the owners.

Fantastic tour. Such a great place to visit and experience some local History.

A Terrible Wedding Venue The two women who run the house are miserable creatures. If you have an issue with people using your space for weddings, why open yourself up to the trouble? The entire experience was agonizing, from getting yelled at for putting a piece of furniture on the grass to cleaning up all the tiny pieces of cake on the dirt left by the front road. Each interaction with Marsha and Barbara was more rude than the last. They have no class, tact, or respect for any other human being. Do not waste your time, money, or energy at this place.

Really nice location for an evening event. Only complaint is that there is a single restroom.

Unfortunately, we had a bad time attempting to plan a wedding reception here (it sounds like some other folks have had problems with weddings here as well). After touring the place twice, and discussing the price in person, we emailed to book the venue. Only then were we told very rudely that we would have to pay to rent the venue for three additional set up and break down hours. All other venues we had contacted included those hours in the price, so I was quite taken aback, especially since we had confirmed the price in person. Thankfully, after reading the other bad review and being put off by the price increase we were saved from a bad reception and decided to rent another venue. The house and grounds do appear like they're worth checking out as a tourist, but the garden was out of season and the house was mostly closed when we looked at it, so I'm not sure what it's like in the summer.

Great piece of history

If you are in the area, be sure to stop by.

Or clients had reserved the garden area behind the house for about an hour so they could have their "first look"and some creative and formal video/pictures of their bridal party and family. As a wedding filmmaker, we love the gardens as they offer so many options within a fairly small space. We've also filled a wedding ceremony here in the past. Just lovely.

Fascinating history. Well worth the visit and the included personal tour with a very knowledgeable volunteer docent. Very impressive staircase for a house built in 1723.

One of the best historic house museums in the country. Fantastic collect of period furniture, ceramics, artwork, and personal items. Home of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, William Whipple. Beautiful garden in the back. Great interpretation of colonial history and one family's impact on state and national events and history. A must visit when in Portsmouth.

It's always a pleasure to visit this living museum. I've visited a few times and the dedication of the people who lovingly look after this antique home shows in every polished, preserved detail. I particularly like the plant sales when they have them.

Interesting piece of cultural history in Portsmouth. The woodwork detail is quite impressive. A fun little something to do.
