My daughter and I spent a week on a road trip touring the state of Nevada, seeing amazing geological wonders, and learning the mining history of the state. Ironically, Virginia City was probably the only disappointing stop. The entire town has become a cheaply done tourist trap of a location, none of which is aging well. The Way It Was Museum, a small relic of history itself, is on Main Street and costs $4 per person to enter. The price is fine for what you get, which isn't much. There are some interesting relics, but the entirety of the display doesn't seem to have been updated or dusted much in at least 40 years, which is also the age of the "movie" they play on loop in the back, starring a couple of actors I vaguely remember from when I was in 1st grade, and transferred to DVD from a grainy VHS tape at some point. The entire building reeks of cigarette smoke, too. For a much better history of mining in the state of Nevada, I'd recommend going to Berlin-Ichthyosaur, Ely, and/or Pioche. The only part of this museum I did find original and interesting was the 3D model of the mining tunnel system of the Chollar Mine.

Good place to start your VC visit to learn a little more on mining

A lot to read but very informative

This museum is worth the small cost to visit and will be of interest even to small children. Both the building and outdoor area is packed full of artifacts, photos, minerals, diagrams, and stories of the mining history of Virginia City. …

Gotta love the way it was, all the history and stories in this place are way cool Best of all its worth the couple bucks to get in so overall the museum is way cool. The older lady that works there however, not so cool. I have been there a couple times and she has never been pleasant to me, she'll take a look at you a d if you dont fit that good ole boy mold she treats you like your trying to steal everything not nailed down and I'm not the only one. I think she's one of the owners.

Quirky collection of local history. Mining technology. Minerals. Lifestyles of the boom times of Virginia City. The collection of incredibly ornate and french dressed dolls alone is worth admission. One problem... no restrooms on site. Got to the saloon down the street.

When in the area, do not miss this attraction. Lots of history and great presentation. Great staff! Loved the ladies behind the reception counter.

Matt Stajduhar

Well worth the time, especially if you are an old mining equipment junkie like me. Lots of historical items and a ton of documents like maps, contracts, mining claims, etc. They have several old crushers which I was very excited to see. A couple steam drills along with a ton of pictures from back in the day. If your here don't pass this up, not a huge place but well worth your time.

Racist woman at counter :( Both me and my white dad came in to find no one at the counter so as we were waiting two native American woman started to wait as well. When the woman worker finally showed up and we were about to pay she told the two native American woman to leave and started to yell this at them. When my dad asked why they had to leave all the woman behind the counter said was "because I told them before and I'll tell them again" so me and my dad took our money else were.

Small place towards one end of the street. Cost $4 (£3) entry and has a few odds and sods relating to life and mining in and around them thar hills. There is a twenty minute video split into 4 segments giving you an overview which is okay. The video could really do with being brought into this century as it's quality is poor and the "famous" faces used are not relevant to anyone born after 1970

Phil Nieto

Don't miss this museum on the mother lode theme

Sterling Bobbitt

This self-guided museum was a good way to explore the phenomenon of Virginia City. It had a continuous loop of films about the area in the back room, a large collection of hardware and memorabilia from the City and its heyday, and some massive machinery out in the yard. The labeling and interpretation left a bit to be desired, and the collection was cramped, but the admission (3$ in 2016) was reasonable and it proved the most informative place we visited in Virginia City. The scope of mining operations was well documented and pretty amazing.

Lenora Shope

Justin Friedman

A little run down from it's hey-day. Definitely has great potential but needs an update, much like Virginia City in general. The artifacts are authentic and there is a lot to learn here.

Great spot to get the history of the Comstock. Stop in. Donate to the locals. Expand your experience and knowledge. The 3D tunnel model is a mind blowing visualization. I had no idea the scale of operations that once occurred under the ground there. Helps you appreciate how easy we have it today. This place is on my recommend list.

Virginia Wolf

A simple but very intresting museum. Lots of little details to see and ponder over. Historical objects and the stories behind them are plentiful here. Bonus points for a very talkative and adorable museum cat that sat behind the counter. If I ever get back to Virginia City I will be sure to go again.

After all the signs driving into Virginia City, I guess we were expecting....more. Although the museum has a lot of interesting period artifacts, the overall feeling is...dated. The museum could definitely use updating, especially the …

I wanted to charge me $16 to go in there and look at a bunch of old garbage and the only reason they did that is because they had this video of that guy that used to be on Little House on the Prairie I think his name was Olsen what a joke. Now I went on the train that is something worth doing. So interesting. And it's only 12 bucks

Chad Kirst
