REVIEWS OF Nevada State Museum IN Nevada

Lynette Moore

Very well organized. Great displays. Kid friendly. Very informative, loved the mint.

Robert Keel

Small, but well done. Plan at least an hour.

Pam Anagnos

This museum has an amazing collection in Nevada minted coins, Nevada mining history, a replica of a mine that you walk through and experience all facets of mining. Further, a full wing in native American artifacts, and a large zoological exhibit combined with Nevada state topography and so much more. It's truly a great museum to view, and is perfect for an afternoon tour!

B Decker

Excellent place to visit with many exhibits from mint to Nevada natural history and a ghost town moved from the desert

Jim Spence

An educational experience at a reasonable price! Well laid out, one of the museum experiences.

Esther Wallis

Was a bit disappointed with it. I enjoyed the exhibit that had the Nevada night scene.

Ellie Lucas

Great place to visit and learn about Nevada!

Samuel Johnson

Tremendous gun and silver collection. Fossil collection is phenomenal; including the state fossil: Ichthyosaurs. The gift shop book selection alone is worth the visit.

Victor Tai

A very nice museum with a great souvenir shop.

Teresa Church

The Nevada State Museum is a beautiful establishment! This place has been so kind to the homeschool community and offers classes that have shown my kids the beauty of this area such as the animals that call this place home and the plant life of the area. They go into amazing detail...not sparing the information they have. I really am so thankful to them and their kindness. Every time we come we visit the ghost town and mines downstairs along with the gift shop for goodies. My son adores the rock collection they have. We grab a new rock every time we come too.

Ninfa DePalma

Very informative and interesting museum. The mine was fun. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Bobby Allee

Great place to explore. Staff was very informed and the tour well worth it. Great place to learn about Carson history and it's culture. Great place for the family or groups.

Bob Baker

Great museum, not crowded The mine in the basement is amazing!

Kendrall Williams

When in Carson City you have to go here. It is so well done it is unbelievable!

Kit Myers

Nevada’s history like the state lies in the rain shadow of California. Nevada may not be as populous or as flashy as its western neighbor, but it’s strong silent symbol of the West. The museum has captured the history of The Old West. It’s small enough and charming enough to keep children and adults equally interested. You’d never know the hidden history of the state if you missed this museum. Definitely worth an hour of your time. At least.

Brian Cannon

Pretty cool place. I liked the ghost town and the mine exhibit.

Matthew Spears

Fun place to visit with the whole family, and it's filled with many kid friendly exhibits.

Joe Gallo

Very interesting if you want to learn more about gold rush era minting. Some history as well with a life size mammoth skeleton

Linda Poirier

Very interesting.

K7XC Tim Marek

Been in this wonderful FREE museum several times and always enjoy myself, often coming away with a renewed respect for all things Nevada. Their map collection is second to none! We worth spending the day browsing all the areas and take a quick tour of the adjoining NV State Capitol & NV State Senate Buildings.

Dave Schroeder

Great place to discover Nevada, a must. And don't miss the classic mine exhibit.

Cora Johnson

I'm a tour guide there and of course think it's great. Come see our underground mine and the historic mint. One of a kind!

Matt Bunn

Excellent place. Tons to see of many interests.

Jorge Chulin

Great experience and learning

Logan Craine

Great museum. Amazing exhibits. Took a day trip from Tahoe to Carson city. It was the highlight of the trip. They have exhibits on the natives Americans. And mining. Also great exhibit on the natural history of Nevada. And great exhibit. Also got a free book. That is so great. And giant wooly mammoth. Personally one of the best museums in Nevada. Overall deserves ten stars.

Tim Wagoner

I learned a lot of stuff I had no idea about. Very informative.

Jack Caldwell

Museum is small, but varied and very interesting.

Eric Stern

Very best small museum in America. Also, the only place you can experience a still operational Morgan & Orr coin press.

James Lobb

I just love this museum, I've never been to a better museum than this one

John Robertson

If you live in Northern Nevada, you better go here, and you better bring your kids to see the mine. It's full of Nevada history, and its worth a visit at least once a year.

Johanna Christopherson

Very interesting, a lot to look at and learn about

Larry Read

It's like the exhibits are only half finished. I didn't go to school here in NV so I've never been to there before. I was surprised that the Native American exhibit would be so sparse, also I was amazed there was no mention or the Ghost Dancers, that had originated in NV by a Piute Shaman, which had an overwhelming effect on the history or the entire NA population in the 1800's. Also there wasn't any staff around you could ask questions to. The mining section was okay but really made for school kids not thinking adults. The natural history part was not very good either, many of the taxidermied animals didn't have any information about them. Also, some of the mineral displays were lacking. One of the things that was lacking was of the mineral formations from Pyramid Lake, there was nothing about what they were or how they came to be. I didn't get a chance to really check out the Mint portion of the museum, so I can't comment on that. The weapon section was interesting but the descriptions were lacking IMHO. The museum might be better for children than adults.

Ginni

Amazing place to visit. Staff was so friendly and helpful. I have never enjoyed a museum as much as this one. To be at the location they minted the Carson City coins was very impressive. To see one of the orginal presses was even more amazing. If you have the time stop by. You will not regret the very small cost for all the knowledge you will gain.

Don Ketterling

Good, but not great. There is much more history that needs to be told

Bruce Burgener

Very interesting. Genoa (Gen-Noa) is a fun community.

sh9down onme

Nice Museum. Displays are small. Use to be quite spectacular. Sometimes things don't change for the better.

Denise lea

Don’t miss the underground mine !

Greg Wertz

Incredible history! Very easy access and the information is awesome. The folks at the entrance are very courteous and friendly.

Ken C

Bought a planchet from the gift shop and got it struck on the 1st U.S. coin press.

Kurt KUCHAREK

Great place for family and friends!! Great place to learn Nevada history!!

Todd Herlan

Its alot different from when i used to go there as a kid.

Cheryl Norton

This Museum was excellent should be 5 stars what a variety it was three stories and we must have spent at least two to three hours there it is also very handicap accessible

Shelley Owen

Would've been 3 but extra point for friendliness and effort. Highlights for me: BUTTON COLLECTION! Indigenous American's collection (brimming with apoligies), and bottle collection. UNR doing a fantastic job with available resources!

Burnie Shadoan

Good for all of your

John Heiner

A really good museum that talks about Nevada.

Benjamin Halagean

Excellent display of rocks, minerals. Even a giant mastodon skeleton. Nevada's history is here. Please stop by. It's worth it.

Sonny St. Andry

An amazing place to learn more about Nevada. Silver from the WWII Battleship U.S.S. Nevada and coins from the Carson City Mint are special attractions.

Antonia Pacheco

My kids first time visiting this museum and they love it. Our favorite part was the mine and the history of Nevada station. If you are looking for something kid friendly visit Nevada state museum.

Tammy Liu

The fee was $8, reasonable! History about Nevada, coin press, gaming, etc. To me, it was not "interesting", just average. If you are just looking to get some basic knowledge about Nevada's history and this was on your way, then fine.

Jill Kurtz

Great exhibits. Well done. Very nice displays. We only had about two hours to tour the museum. I wish we had double the time. Only thing I can complain about was the handicapped parking. They had some available but the entry doors that are closest to these spots are shut down thus requiring the equivalent of a full city block walk to get to the main entrance.

Cliff

Our first visit to the Museum. Very well arranged. The 100 year commemoration of the US participation in WW1 is especially good. Looking forward to a follow up trip some time.

Benjamin Spence

Great bang for your buck at this museum. Natural history, local history, awesome mine simulation exhibit. Bring the whole family.

Sami Henkel

Loved it. Had alot of fun

DEMONITIZED BOI AKA Random Rail Fanner

Heres a museum location we're at during Easter weekend. Carson city museum were they made coins.

Alyse Fletcher

Love this museum! So many awesome things that outline Nevada's history. There is a bit of history for all types of interests, from mining, to ghosts towns, to geology, and Native American history. LOVE!!

Tom Marshall

Very interesting, well presented exhibits. Best museum I've seen in a long time.

Kayre Axe

Excellent, big little museum! It's just the right size to take in most everything in one visit. There is such a variety to see here too! Everything from native American history to mining to fossils and minerals and everyday objects. Make sure to ask for the story about the only operating coin press of its type still remaining in the world. It's been on quite a journey! The mining exhibit is fun and informative as well. I don't often give five stars, saving them for the best of the best. This museum is definitely worth it!

Rick Singh

Very good place, nice museum for adults and children to learn about American history and nice staff.

Jessie Bate

Interesting museum with a lot of neat artifacts. Roadside America brought me here, and I'm glad I checked it out!

Tom Moyes

Very impressive mining exhibit. Nice mineral collection.

Michael Burakowski

They have a artificial mine exhibit that is pretty realistic they show a lot about what is done in the mind and what miners went through during the rush have the Comstock they also have an excellent display of old guns artifacts of the mining camps and of course Carson City mint press is also in the museum very good place to take children to learn about the history of mining and the hardships the people went through during those times as I understand it the items on display to change from time to time

Thomas Wenner

Wow! What a great museum! So much to see.

Joseph Nink

Nice little well rounded museum. Plenty of history about the town and, the silver mint, and the mines that were nearby.

Elizabeth Fox

A great family destination. Very well presented and diverse exhibits, friendly staff and volunteers, a great value!

sbgroppi

What a cool place! 17 and under are free! Whoa!

Perry Schmitt

Fantastic experience! I learned a great deal about Nevada history.

Alex Chavez

I have lived in Carson City since 1999, but had never visited the Museum. Wow! What a treat. So much information about the area and the sets and scenes are awesome. So many different exhibits. If you have not gone, it is time to go! ~Alex

Stephen Nicholas

What a wonderful space to explicate the key elements of Nevada history in compelling and fascinating detail. There is a roast town, the original minting machine since Nevada's entry into the union during the civil war. There are beautiful examples of silver Smithing, coinage and silver Ware. A extensive collection of historic guns, long , short and tiny. An exhibit on the submarine named for Nevada. Of course a gift shop. You can purchase a variety of commerative coins minted as you watch. Lots of fun for all.

James Dourvetakis

A very nice museum. It is a blue star museum so didcounts for veterans. A lot of cool information on mining and the mint. A lot of nostalgic items from the late 1800's into the mid 1900's.

Erica Werner

Lots of interesting things to look at and learn

Filip

I love it. Best museum ever!

Jerry Lohr

Well worth a visit. The history of the Carson City Mint and the mining boom that supported it is laid out in one wing. The anthropological, biological, and geological history of the state are explained in other sections.

Leibniz Hang

Interesting historical museum. However, be aware that the air conditioning does not reach some parts of the museum.

John Cronin

I have been to many museums but this smile Museum is packed with a large amount of information and well worth the time and effort I give it five stars

Wallace Family Coins and Travels

Great Museum! I definitely could have spent more time here than we did. The Carson City Mint press was the main draw for us. It didn't disappoint! Friendly security guard/greeter at front counter. He was very thorough and gave us a map to help guide us through the museum.

Peggy Emery

$8 to walk through museum. Typical museum displays with lots of reading if you want to take the time. The simulated mining shaft was interesting could be better with audio explanations rather than so much reading. Would be nice if they had more interactive displays.

wesleyalee

Small, but well maintained & organized. Matter-of-Fact displays. Very helpful staff.

Horseshoe Coins & Antiques

Impressive to say the least, been wanting to visit for some time, and finally stopped here on the way back from my Yosemite road trip, this last week of Sept. 2019. Very well displayed collections covering about every social aspect of the past Nevada regions history. As a Mining & Western history buff really enjoyed the 3 hours I was there. Was hoping to see more of the excavated dies found & donated generously by the contractor. The #1 coin press & 10,000 ounce mint beam scale are beautiful, collections of raw CC coins nice but hard to make out behind steel bars, coins are more appreciated close up, but what can they do, much value there and impressive to say the least! The full skeleton of the 17,000 year old Woolly Mammoth & rearing horse + amazing story behind how they perished really amazing. Wonderful collection of rock specimens, and there chemical matrix makeup's very interesting. Folks, make this a must stop on your next vacation. Great job Carson City! From Bill @ Horseshoe Coins & Antiques, Blaine Harbor, Wash.

Tara Wittman

I took myself to the museum on Museum Day and was not disappointed. Loved the mine exhibit, and the taxidermied wildlife! One small complaint? The ambient lighting was a bit too ambient in some rooms, and I had a hard time viewing the displays or reading the placards.

Michelle Jacobo

Love the history told here. From prehistoric to gold rush minting in the Carson area some great things to see.

Richard Savage

Will worth $8 charge current Museum.

Sean E.

The museum caters well to a diverse range of interests, having everything from a Columbian Mammoth to a World War One exhibit to Nevada state history. The staff was also very friendly. I would definitely return to this place in the future.

VEGAS EDGE REALTY Shawna Sonnenburg

Wow very surprised! We lived the replica mine shaft..and the coin minting information

WAK

Great Museum. Lots of fun facts, items and displays about Nevada. Worth the time to take the family. The staff are knowledge and very friendly.

Kurt Schmidt

Solid collection of Nevada history. Mining tunnel is a unique experience worth the trip down from Reno.

Evgeny Semionov

Good museum that has several different expositions: native Americans history, geology, inventions, game industry, weapons, mining, and some other. Mining section is very interesting. These guys made a small copy of mine that demonstrates different types of miners activities.

Amy Watt

wonderful staff. was able to see coin press in action--super neat to see. i think kids and famikies wil. enjoy the mine and the full mammoth, the minerals were beautiful.

Sailing Blind

Such a great museum.

Ser C

It's a huge place and will interesting for all ages.

Stefanie Clark

The most amazing experience ever!!!!a must go see top of list museums!!!

Sarah 05

Had an awesome time! Lots of cool Nevada history. The taxidermy displays were breathtaking. Front desk staff answered all my questions.

just me

Three story building (two story and basement). Free parking around the back of the museum. Only 3 or 4 spots plus a few handicap spots. Get there early for great parking. Basement is by far the best part of the museum. However it is not handicap accessible due to the nature of the displays. The movie shown is definitely worth watching and I would recommend watching it before touring the museum.

Chris Daigle

If you're looking for a place to learn about the history of Reno NV this is the place to go. You can spend 3 to 4 hours in there. A great place for the family and friends. The costs was not to bad either. There is stars to go up to the second floor. But there is an elevator for those who can't do the stars. The under ground mine was my favorite. I can't tell you anymore for it will ruin your suprises. Go have fun and learn. You won't regret it.

Jose Diaz

Way bigger than I thought. It takes about 2 hours or so depending how quickly you run through. Loved the native american side and was rather impressed with miners exhibit and ghost town. Had a great display of older generation hand guns and rifles. Not to mention a pretty sizable display of the geology that was presented.

Salon Westlake

The Nevada State Museum is a beautiful combination of history and architecture. It is so beautiful to see and is just perfectly sized! The convenience of the coin shop across the street made it even better to buy our Carson City minted coins. It’s a great thing to do on a hot day!

Glenn Thomas Franco Simmons

Wonderful n interesting museum. Will become member when i move to Carson City.

Jenn Jenn C

When you see the building from the outside, you may find it hard to imagine that there is a coin press, mine shaft competed replicated, a walk through past times of Nevada, and so much more. The courtesy of the staff is incredible. This is a must see and appreciate experience!

Craig Bloxham

Great place to get your learn on !!!

Wow what a great and lovely presentation of Nevadas History. I think every school should have a field trip to this museum. You learn alot and enjoy every moment of it. There is no way of going to the future if you dont know what happen in the past. Highly recommend it. Go explore, you might find your next destination here.

silver mount

Nice museum. Friendly staff. They have a working coin press from the old mint, a mine replica set up in the basement and some nice exhibits from the early wild west days. This is a museum you can take the kids to. Street parking, but plentiful. Restaurants close by as well.

Wilfredo Licop

I gave 3star for all things that we can see those memories from the past amazing. Its a self service to know all about.

Woodirae Forrester

It was lovely

Shanna Mae

A great day for the family. Decided not to get the year pass because you really can do it in one day. We will probably come back again in about a year

Martin Hampton

Don’t miss this museum! My favorite section is the silver mine on the lower floor - it’s just like going into a mine but way more informative. The Wild West gun collection was another favorite.

Garrett Cross

This was such a cool place. I went for the history behind the building since it used to be the Carson City Mint. It did not disappoint. They happened to be minting medallions on the original press when I was there too.

Theresa Huntington

So much history it was cool.

Warren Blum

Excellent. Lots of nv history. Nice silver mine in basement. Gives u a good idea what it was like 140 yrs ago

Taya Sabin

Fun and educational

Danita H

This museum features the local mining and mint histories. There is a mock mine one can walk through and a very informative demo was given of coin pressing on the only surviving150 plus year old machine. Museum goers can buy a blank silver planchet ($60 at this writing) and have it pressed as a commemorative coin. Coin press demos are given on Fridays, but check with the museum to verify. 109 of the 111 coins pressed by the mint with the CC mark is on display in a vault. The museum is gearing up for their official sesquicentennial event set for Feb. 4, 2020 and have replica 1870 coins for sale. This is a very unique and enjoyable museum.

Christie Contreras

Great group field trip

Ginger Tremblay

Lots bigger on the inside. Much to see. We had a great time.

Patrick A. Hall

A must see place. Well worth it.

Jess Mendenhall

Excellent museum, everyone is helpful and friendly. Amazing and excellent exhibits to see

Kris Valle

Fantabulous history and a wonderful experience.

Eleanor Bernsten

Interesting and informative. So many aspects of Nevada are represented here over such a time period. I seem to remember there being a large display of Indian arrowheads and Dat So La Lee baskets but couldn’t find any on display on this visit. The museum has done a wonderful job however.....

Richard Smith

Well worth visiting. Excellent displays of Nevada's contemporary history, archeological history and natural history. The mine exhibit shows how hard and dangerous it was working in the mines. They have an almost complete set of every coins minted at the Carson City Mint. A graphic display discusses the process of making coins including the processing of the gold and silver ore.

Dan Reed

Awesomeness me place to visit. Their is so much history and things to see I really enjoyed it.

Rachel Logsdon

Great museum! Our whole family enjoyed it. It's actually a very large museum and we spent an easy 2 hours there and enjoyed every minute. The basement underground mine exhibit was fun to explore. The main floor was dedicated to the Carson City mint and mining history. They also had a large native american exhibit. Upstairs they had really cool exhibits that varied: historical living in Nevada (from old cars and dental chairs to China dolls), mining and minerals of Nevada (including what the metal and minerals were used for), military test site, casinos and gambling, animal life of Nevada, and even ancient life of Nevada (woolly mammoth and ancient sea creatures), etc.

Jon Michealjonhiltontrumpgottii

The thrill of the museum, was the theme, as the side walks glittered, with stars more fun healthy choices , to be alive with excitement a trip to the museum and sight see supporting the historical part of viewing all the areas inside was the best te I allowed myself time as planned , to do good great excersize sss in injoyment in the fulfillments of acquiring , educational time spent , The United States of America, Department of Defenses and The Department of Motor Vehicles , encourages and record's all visits protecting and guarding the growing educational duties we accomplish , protecting against online hacker identify theft and educational theft, the perfect day spent safely on and in the United States of America, thank u

Sean Keller

Great layout, lots to see. The mine display was awesome.

Devin Osband

Viewing the coin press in listening to the story of everywhere this press is traveled and where it's printed money and medallions was a true Treasure of visiting the Nevada state Museum. I recommend going across the street to where they sell old coins street from the Nugget. You can actually view a coin that was printed on the Press in 1870 with CC printed on it.

Matthew Henry

Formerly the coin mint of Carson Nevada, the museum still hosts one of the original mints that is still occasionally used to mint commemorative coins. Adjacent to the mint is a vault that holds and displays an impressive collection of coins minted at the Carson mint. In keeping with the theme of coins, the museum annually hosts a large coin fair for sellers and collectors to gather and look at historic US coins. Upstairs are an impressive natural history exhibit (including a full-scale mammoth statue) and a collection of stuffed local wild life. The museum has expanded to a second building via a glass breeze-way, and nearly the entire museum wheelchair accessible. The exception being a lower-level recreation of a Nevada mine that showcases various mining techniques in a compelling and immersive experience. I would recommend visiting the museum on Nevada Day as the glass breeze-way has a great spot for viewing the parade.

Rosh PR

Lots of Nevada history. Good place if u love history.

T O M Banducci

Phenomenal experience. Amazing collection of historical artifacts and incidental items. Spent over 3 hours meandering through the museum.

Sher Marshall
