REVIEWS OF American Swedish Institute IN Minnesota

My family stopped in on a rainy day looking for something to do. This was such a fun way to spend the day! The mansion is gorgeous, and filled with history. Inside there is also a small restaurant, Fika that serves Nordic cuisine, mostly lunch fare as well as cocktails, wine and beer.

Luisa Abeyta

We enjoyed everything. Best were the demonstrations of weaving, carding, knitting, etc. Oh, and EVERYTHING was wonderful. Lots of room for lots of people. Mansion was amazing!!! Great staff, full of info. and friendly. Beautifully presented. Loved the cafe. My salmon was to die for. Bought fun and historical cultural things in gift store. Thanks!♡♡♡

First time visit was fabulous, and we're not even Swedish. The history of the place, and the family that built it is amazing. Looking forward to visiting for the Christmas holidays

Sina Shirinpour

An old mansion who belonged to a Swedish family that later became a museum. It was a nice and cozy museum to get a feeling of lifestyle, handicrafts, culture and other aspects of the Swedish lives. Check out some of the fun activities and seasonal exhibitions that happens there as well.

Korie Angela

Such an amazing place! There is so much to explore here. Went to the Valborg celebration and had such an amazing time wandering through the mansion, listening to live music, and checking out the Solar Egg Sauna. They have a lovely area for kids to play inside the mansion as well. The food at FIKA was delicious. The staff were all extremely knowledgeable and friendly and we learned so much. Overall, it was just a really wonderful experience. We will definitely be going back to check out future exhibits. We are especially looking forward to the Viking exhibit they are showing in May (2019.)

Lynne Simons

Staff is beyond words helpful and informative. There is so much to see!

This is a really nice place to visit. The exhibit is worth seeing. The gather outside was nice as well. I would definitely recommend the tour to hear the history behind the art pieces.

Keith St.Marie

This place is incredible. So many things to see. The house is beautiful. The Viking exhibit was excellent.

Michelle F

Fun and enriching place to visit. A lot of history and stories of the Turnblad family who once called this their home. Beautiful and well thought out hand carved wood throughout the entire house and imported porcelain fireplaces! There are 3 floors and a lot to explore. They have very knowledgeable guides and a really nice gift shop as well. Varied special Swedish heritage exhibits are featured year round. Ample parking available and easy to get to.

Andrea Miesen

The place is nice. Luckily my son is free because 12 for him would have been crazy. It's alittle high priced for a building but they had nice things to look at

Minn Rodriguez

Excellent Viking exhibit.

hamandcheez onrye

Prior to visiting I had no idea just how fantastic this museum actually was. The museum side has a wonderful set of gallery rooms along with a small swedish style bistro. The house side was fun to explore and had a rich history. Don't forget to grab a guide brochure and you can use your phone to take a self-guided tour. The architecture is unique and beautifully detailed. If you are looking for something unique to do in the Twin Cities this would make a great stop.

Les Stern

Interesting place.

Sarah Sadique

Beautiful museum featuring art, historical features and kids' areas. Cute gift shop and a nice cafe. Ample free parking. Very thoughtfully designed. They have both temporary and permanent exhibits so it's a place you could return to every so often. My kids (10 and 1.5) and I spent over two hours there and all had a blast.

Scott Cregan

Viking exhibition was small, but good. Worth seeing.

Terry Clark

The Viking exhibit was amazing and the house is beautiful!

vinay kalyan Sri Ram malladi

Good place to know about Swedish architecture in Us

Rachel Starbuck

Museum is wonderful. Lunch menu looked and tasted great but overpriced. We were there with a group of 8 we came from 60 plus Milea away.We went to fika , coffee and dessert after our tour and we're told at 2;00 pm that we couldn't sit in the restaurant, it was only for full service. So we were delegated to sit on a bench...with a coffee in hand and a dessert...not even suggested to sit outside...where it was starting to drizzel minutes later. Will return for other exhibits. But eating will be done elsewhere. Not a way to treat your customers....and possible new members.

Andrew

A piece of Minnesotan and Swedish history tucked into the cities. A great place to get a glimpse into Swedish culture in Minnesota's early years and the architectural influence it had on the design of the mansion. Be sure to get some Swedish meatballs at the cafe!

James McCauley

Delicious food and a really great photography/composition exhibit.

Grayson Kennedy

I was disappointed. I expected a Swedish house with Swedish inspired furniture, etc. People kept walking out on the tour guide because there's not a lot to see there. I'm not a fan of modern art being displayed in the old house. I won't be bringing my Swedish relatives here.

Colin

Fika is great - service is a bit spotty, but overall an enjoyable spot. The institute itself has great learning opportunities for Scandinavian languages and culture - particularly Swedish.

Tina Witzel

We ended up spending hours here talking with a gentleman who knew more about the institute than most people do about their own home! It's a lovely space with great stories throughout. Spend a couple minutes or a whole afternoon! Great tourist spot or weekend activity for locals!

David McCoy

This place is just magnificent. The building is amazing, the history is fascinating, the art displays are interesting. Plus, in the adjacent new wing, there is food and drink, a nice gift shop, and a lovely courtyard. Check the schedule for weekly cultural events and family activities. Highly recommended.

Ellen Doll

Absolutely smashing space to hold an event!

Mary Moellenhoff

They had a wonderful photography exhibit.

Madison Anderson

Beautiful place to see! Little spendy but definitely gorgeous

Michael Ahlf

Fika Cafe, mansion architecture, Scandinavian history, culture, art and goods. Free parking.

Mariah Havlicek

Very interesting and beautiful place. The art they are displaying currently is so thought provoking.

Syrah M

Wonderful museum. The children’s room is always really fun with books, dress up, etc. Love the gift shop too!

Jon Souer

Wonderful and interesting place to spend a few hours marveling at the craftsmanship.

Abby Fleck

This is a beautiful museum! I always enjoy visiting when they are hosting and event or artist. The gift shop is filled with nice Swedish items as well.

Ramona Jeffery

A hidden gem in Minneapolis. When you visit be sure to include a stop at their restaurant, Fika. We had beet salad, salmon salad, the cardamon roll, and the sorrell cake dessert. The cream ginger and the cream cinnamon beverages were delightful. All the food has a delicate balance of essential flavors that please the palate. Not over sweetened and intensely concentrated on the fruit purees.

Dennis Tjaden

Great place for art and history. Beautiful architecture

Dave DeSimone

Great historic mansion

Philip R

Wonderful old mansion. Gorgeous carvings on main living level. Rooms decorated at Christmas for each Scandinavin country. Nice mansion to visit

Lance Spicher

Interesting, eclectic tour, all can be seen in 45 minutes or less if you like or take more time.

Dan Vogel

Attended OLLI class great facility

Atticus Li

As a student of architecture, this marvelous building is a must-see. The interior designs are gorgeous, and the sense of feeling you get when you are surrounded by beauty is priceless.

Larry Schindler

First visit and I'll be back a lot. Took the tour and I got a lot of info. about different countries. Such a beautiful mansion. Wood carvings everywhere. Fire places, all different in every room. Activities almost daily. Whatever your ethnic background, you owe it to yourself & family to go there once.

Rose Guard

Fantastic space. Perfect blending of old and new architecture.

May QS

Such a beautifully decorated mansion. The woodwork and the way the natural lighting brightens up the whole mansion is sublime! I really enjoyed the visit. Lots of history and beautiful decor. My favorite room is the Solarium Room. It was very bright and cheerful. It was quite cleverly made. Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys architecture and history.

Bill Howell

Interesting restaurant and great house to tour to see one of the mansions of the Golden Mile.

Annie McPherson

Excellent stop when you visit Minneapolis. Mansion is frozen in time complete with portraits of the original owners. Architecture is amazing. The exhibits in the mansion are well worth the trip. There is a rich history throughout the mansion. Whether you have a swedish heritage or not, this is a fun and educational stop.

lora horngren

I love ASI. It's such a fun place to visit and they always have amazing things going on that you can sign up and participate in. I love that I get to learn more about my heritage and well.

Amanda Bremner

Neat place. Love the space for kids to play! The only drawback is that the building is connected to the mansion in such a way that it takes away from the mansion. But I still thought it was beautiful and well kept up.

Scott Eastman

What a great surprise to get an invitation for dinner and to tour such a great mansion. Volunteers are extremely knowledgeable and fun to learn from!

Ken Brown

They beautifully preserve and share a piece of minnesota history.

Kaylan Martinez

Experienced one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever been to here. The staff was amazing and the catering staff they had was top notch!

Taylor Bryant

The Museum store has awful customer service. They were asking for a receipt on a brand new unopened item that we wanted to exchange despite it being on the shelf at their store. Given the customer service offered by All retailers these days to create a customer first experience it is amazing the service provided here is so lackluster. We will never patronize anything related to this entity ever again.

Iuliia Polina

Beautiful swedish castle in the middle of pretty small american neibourhood. You can visit excibitions and become acquainted with the vikings and their culture. The museum organizes some classes, where you can join. There is a small cafe inside, and you can enjoy delisious swedish meal.

P Kurt

Beautiful old mansion built by Swedish immigrants. Also includes Vikings exhibit.

Alex

As Minneapolis visitors, we’ve been driving past this gorgeous building a few times and decided to finally give it a shot. It goes without saying we weren’t disappointed. As being born 100 miles away from Finland and studying there for a while, I appreciate all the Scandinavian things and its culture. It was nice to see familiar things at the American-Swedish Institute’s Store, but more importantly - touring the mansion was a great experience. Every room had beautiful decorations. Some of them, not all of them, were original. However, a lot of items were created by modern artists and a few rooms looked a little empty. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our time exploring the mansion and took some nice pictures. It also has a cafeteria and a museum store that contains items from Norway, Sweden, Finland, and even Iceland. The institute is a great place to visit for families, couples, or singles and I’d say it will take around 2 hours to check out all the floors and the store. A huge parking lot is onsite and free!

Eileen Long

Lots of fun at Midsommerfest!

Andreas Oines

Beautiful historical building and surprisingly good Viking age exhibits. Good is good too!

Chris Ross

A museum, and restaurant. The ASI is doing a great job of keeping the Park Ave Mansion going. The lunch menu was excellent. The food gave me the energy to go and see an excellent exhibition. Helen was very gracious switching out my daughter’s drink. Very cool place to visit to escape the midsummer heat outside.

Brandy Rhodes

Awesome tour guide! The Vikings exhibit is everything I hoped it would be!

Gloria Carlson

Just came from a mending class that was so much fun! Love this place!

Kyle Peetz

The mansion is fantastic, so is the cafe! parking for visitors is free. Don't miss the guided tour at 2pm.

Josh Beer

very cool building!

Derek Schreiber

This is one of the worlds hidden treasures. Truly a sight to behold, and to be held.

Tom Kaji

I like the mansion, I've there more than 4 times , always find something that I haven't seen yet, Vikings museum was good experience

Nisha Rao

It's a beautiful house and a great sauna. Must place to visit in Minneapolis.

J. Christian

Attended the tasty and entertaining fundraiser brunch, then took a self guided tour of the mansion. Thoroughly enjoyed everything!

David Miel

Always a fun time!

Noelle Knutson

Fun places to spend a couple hours.

Jeffrey Strommen

Cocktails at the Castle is a great way to see the place and people

Mia Bremer

Always changing, very interactive and you don't need to be Swedish. Inclusive exhibits and events

Alix Magner

We love coming here during the Christmas season. They decorate all of the rooms to reflect the Christmas traditions of different scandanavian countries. We always get there early to drink glog at Fika. I think the white is better than the red option.

Judy V

We were here for the Viking exhibit, no not the Minnesota kind though there's also an homage to them! Learned so much and thought the artifacts were incredible. We'll definitely visit again to see other exhibits. Stopped at Midtown Global Market afterwards, only about a mile away, for lunch. Restaurant also on site and a great gift shop.

Anthony David

I had such a great time at the American Swedish Institute. I was there for Senior Prom, so I didnt get to tour the inside of the museum, I just saw the more modern part of the building, with the restraunt, upstairs meeting room, and balcony.

Alec L

Interesting history and a huge house to explore, nice way to spend a few hours.

Nick Bovee-Gazett

One of my favorite places to go. Fika is a gem. They also do birthday parties for kids!

Kristina Kvarnlov-Leverty

Wonderful cultural events related to past and present Swedish and Swedish-American culture. It also has rotating and permanent exhibits, a delicious cafe, and cultural classes from language to crafts to music and dance. Well worth a visit.

Jeff Larson

This place is a great way to explore your Swedish heritage. Their displays, programs, and events are top notch. And don't miss a meal or snack at Fika!

Sarah Ruth Grimes

Something for almost everyone- food, architecture, history, mythology, culture, and a beautiful outdoor space.

Jason Sem

A mix of modern and clasic. One of the better museums in the Twin Cities

Hadrian DeMaioribus

Another museum that gives you an admissions sticker as if you're a small child. I don't understand this repulsive custom. The viking exhibit had a few interesting artifacts, but truly banal placards and weirdly dramatized exhibits with dreamy music and close-cropped and heavily edited video of women doing pagan rituals. What is this, the 1990s? That sort of sensationalized dramatization only serves ill purposes. The house is really enjoyable to walk through, however.

Andrew Mosenden

Amazing Contemporary showcase of Swedish Culture, museum, showcase. Fika is a very delicious cafe. They offer sit down meal service and a nice selection .

Elizabeth Wold

The home is really something and the volunteers are phenomenal. Was not overly impressed by some or their visiting exhibits but such is life. Looking forward to seeing what they do in the future!

Avis Thomas

Outrageously beautiful old mansion, with cool stuff. The temporary exhibit of early Viking materials is well worth visiting. Plenty of guides around to tell you interesting stuff. They clearly love their job.

Eric Damann

Really a neat place to go learn a little bit of Swedish history, more specifically Vikings and those type a fellas (and ladies, of course...) I just LOVED the ornate decorations, intricate woodwork, and all the little cool details everywhere. We were here for a financial-type meeting and dinner/drinks with about a hundred other MFs, and the self-guided tour around the property and buildings was definitely worth checking out, if you're so inclined... Recommended!

Caren Timmerman

Toured the mansion and enjoyed the vendors at Julmarknad. It was beautifully decorated and fun for the whole family

JRob Zetelumen

We were there for the winter solstice celebration and it was wonderful. We got selfies with actual reindeer. The interior was entirely decorated for the holiday. The place was extraordinary anyway. We were really impressed by the fireplaces. The fireplace in the main entry hall was astounding.

Matt Resong

Very interesting historical location. The mansion is beautiful however much of what's on display is more contemporary than I was prepared for (I was thinking more history but it's more representative of "this is how today is"). They also have a temporary Czech display which was very nice and fitting to the holiday season and the Czech traditions. While it's the swedish institute, there was reference to and displays representing many Scandinavian countries. It was a nice and educational time!

Grace M

Simply Beautiful. Great displays. And the docents were very informative and friendly.

Reyna W

This place is such a gem, all these years in MN and I cant believe I hadn't visited this place. The institute focuses on Swedish heritage in any art form, while showcasing the Turnblad mansion and its rich historical attribution. On the same day, I ate traditional Swedish desserts with coffee, went inside a solar egg sauna designed by a Swedish engineer, and walked through a magnificent mansion that belonged to a wealthy Swedish family while learning about its history, all in one place.

Leah Honsey

We attended an outdoor event that was very well coordinated with great food, drinks, ambience and live music.

Bob Simpson

The Viking exhibit was very interesting, and the building itself is worth seeing.

Roy Lubkeman

A favorite stop in Minneapolis. Love the Cafe and the gift shop. Museum is pretty awesome too.

Joseph Peo

Went for the vikings exhibit. Was left underwhelmed by the exhibits themselves. Not a lot of information, along with a lot of repeated information. The building itself is a marvel though.

Håkan Eriksson

Nice place for swedish history and culture

suzanne hagen

Vikings show, many hands on activities, modern addition, good eats

Reid Wersal

Had our wedding here on 9/7/2019 and it rules the hardest.

Roxanne Molskness

Great place to visit during the holidays whether you are Scandinavian or not. Come early to get a parking place as it’s crowded and the lot is small. We visited on the 1st Sunday in December. Wonderful craftsmanship throughout the mansion. Live music upstairs in the ballroom. Treats for purchase on the lower level. Quality handcrafted and traditional gift items for sale in the craft area upstairs as well as the gift shop.

Dawn McCool

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. My husband and I enjoyed our visit.

zohre nemati

A nice place to spend an afternoon in Minneapolis when the weather outside is not the best. They have exhibitions based on swedish related topics, like Vikings and Norse mythology. The main old building has lots of nice furniture and antique decorations, that give you an overall view if the history of the place. The coffee place near the entrance serves a good variety of swedish dishes.

Andru Anderson

It was a lot of fun. We have a young one and spent a lot of the time in the kids area. Great museum!

Kim Kildal

Went at Christmas time, the decorations were beautiful.

Maureen Monhollen

The Turnbull mansion is beautiful, especially when decorated for the holidays, but don't miss the cultural center next door. Fikac has great food in addition to adult beverages. (Get the hard cider!) The brochure for the mansion serves as a great guide so you can wander at leisure and not feel rushed or crowded. The gift shop is great, so don't skip it.

Sheryl Furness

My husband and I visited your exhibit today. We were both disappointed and felt their was so much more you could have done depicting the Vikings. How about a room showing how they lived? How they dressed? So many of the rooms seemed redundant. It was my husband’s first visit so enjoyed being in theCastle.

Jonathan Miller

Amazing building. Plan to spend a few hours just exploring the castle.

Ryan Nosbush

It is an amazing house! We saw the Vikings Begin exhibit and it was fantastic! I definitely recommend it!

maria cardenas

Beautiful museum, well kept, commitment to community.

Carita Murphy

It's lit.

Kjell Karlsson

A good place to meet scandinavians, but don't eat there. It's not worth the money.

Bryan Griffith

I've been here several times. Great.events all year round. I especially like the Christmas displays and market

Denise Houk

We had a lovely lite lunch here. The food was delicious and the staff were attentive and very helpful. The seating was out in the open and felt like eating at outdoor seating. A nice treat in January.

Ronnie St Angelo

I went yesterday it so beautiful omg wow!

Ameet Kamath

Always a good time with the Vikings

Josh Simpson

The temporary Viking exhibit was fascinating. The rest of the museum was pretty but boring

Pamela Jambeck

Always excellent! Now Fica for lunch!

Kristie Carter

Fun and enriching place to visit. A lot of history and stories of the Turnblad family who once called this their home. Beautiful and well thought out hand carved wood throughout the entire house and imported porcelain fireplaces! There are 3 floors and a lot to explore. They have very knowledgeable guides and a really nice gift shop as well. Varied special Swedish heritage exhibits are featured year round. Ample parking available and easy to get to. Bonus- they have a delicious cafe that exclusively serves Swedish fare!

Jackson McVey

Amazing exhibition in probably the most beautiful mansion I have ever seen in my life! Highly recommend you visit if you love art and history!

Jennifer Marcuson

Well done, interesting, and a great lunch selection of unique dishes you won't find elsewhere. Reccomend highly.

Kay Chambers

I love to come see the new exhibits! This museum is always a go-to! They have great food and drinks as well!

SANDRA BESTLAND

You must see the Viking exhibit at the American Swedish Institute as the day will bring you so much more. Even if you have no interest in artifacts from the trading, raiding Vikings from days of yore, the Turnblad mansion is worth the visit. Throughout the mansion are custom plaster ceilings, ceramic fireplaces, master carved staircases, and lead glass windows. The 2nd-floor solarium has great views and a terrazzo floor. The mansion is three stories plus a basement with art throughout. The Norse Saga room in the basement is a highlight as is the children's room. The Fika restaurant is in the modern addition to the mansion where lunch is a real treat. Try the meatballs with a side of Danish rye bread. Service is slow but if it's a nice day and you are seated in the outdoor courtyard, you won't mind.

Lin Brown

I loved this mansion. The wood crafting and the ceiling decor was absolutely amazing. Everywhere I looked there was something else to see. Vikings exhibit was just ok.

Paul Robinson

Always a delight! Amazing exhibit IMAGINE: Surreal Photography, Fika's fabulous food, and friendly staff and volunteers. Thank you ASI!

Andy Magnuson

Attended an event today and the staff is amazing, food is delicious and facility is beautiful.

Tyler Thiessen

Very intriguing exhibits and helpful staff! Find Ted if you want all of your questions answered.

Mark Raisanen

Visited the egg sauna. Very cool.

John Shannon

A must go! The vikings lore runs deep!

Susan M W

This place is so rich with history and beautifully decorated for CHRISTMAS.

Stephan Kieu

Fika always delivers! Fantastic exhibition of Erik Johansson.

Annie Kathleen Thurston Pike

Wonderful experience. Really enjoyed myself along with learning my heritage. My grandkids loved it as well.

Rob Starbuck

Great presentation exhibit from Upsala Sweden on the Vikings. Restaurant is $$$ and unless you buy a meal and not have just FICA, they will not allow you to sit at the indoor tables even if it is raining.

Ray Cleveland

So much more than one might suspect. First-rate exhibition experience.

Kathy Huang

Amazing wood interiors. I was also quite surprised at how many fireplaces were in the building.

Patricia McHugh

Great fun for Christmas time! The food was delicious and unusual.

Michael Garmon

Fantastic venue for the fan of beautifully constructed and decorated homes. The current photography exhibit is a tremendous bonus. A real gem for anyone, Swedish or not.

Jennifer Pennington

This is one of those incredible places that make you so glad you decided to be a tourist in your own city. The architecture alone is incredible and then the home is also filled with unique and beautiful fireplaces and so much great art!

Joel Stegner

As members, we go to new new exhibit. Always interesting. Easy access and parking and very good Nordic cafe.

Vonnie Sheadel

The mansion is fabulous! The Viking exhibit is small but interesting.

Steven Dawes

This place is incredible! Must be seen to be believed!

Catherine D

Went there for a wedding, the weather cooperated, outdoors in front of the mansion with all the trees in full bloom. Couldn't ask for a more perfect day. After the ceremony we toured the building on our own, then had a great meal.

Luke Dulgar

Great small museum and cultural center. Excellent shop, gallery, museum, historic mansion and cafe. Lots of street level off street parking, ADA accessible. Great place as an add on to the Walker or MIA.

Samuel H

Really cool place. Amazing old mansion filled with a bunch of art and great architecture.

Melody Shores

The American Swedish Institute is an ornate example of turn of the century Swedish architecture. Regardless of the exhibits being shown, the building itself is delightful to wander around in, and imagine the lives it used to host.

Elizabeth Moldenhauer

A grand place to visit for the afternoon. The exhibit was excellent, the artifacts and history of the Swedish immigrants to the Midwest was interesting. The mansion was breathtaking....And you must stop at the Cafe. Yum! Good Coffee of course!

Gary Ganser

We attended a morning conference there. The newer building is beautiful and has a store with unique, wonderful gifts. Tour are available of the old building, which we plan to go back for when the Viking exhibit starts.

Rhonda Gowen

Intriguing photography exhibit with a progress video by the living artist Johansson. Gorgeous woodwork and fireplaces at the mansion. On-site cafe and gift shop. Pleasant and helpful staff.
