This Museum belongs to the category of Historical society.
A lot of neat things to see there! Very nice!
Absolutely recommend this museum. Not only is it free but it is so worth seeing and super fun. You really feel as if you step on a different time period, its wonderful!
Always a joy. The Lindell AC exhibit is wonderful.
I enjoyed I try to go as often as I can.
A really nice, free museum. Interesting for the whole family.
Lots of information to absorb. Second visit, nicely done.
Very interesting and informative (and free admission!)
Went to the pure spirits event at the museum. Great venue!!!!
Awesome free museum in midtown. Its a great place for a family trip. My 5 year old loves the model train.
A special museum to visit, very cool.
Such an awesome adventure. I've been there before, although it's been a while. This time was nice because I was with women from my church that are part of our Women's Ministry. We really enjoyed the Motown exhibit including a special section celebrating legendary songstress Aretha Franklin.
Such an amazing establishment to visit. The history and authenticity had me in awe the entire time. It is FREE admission, but they happily accept donations. Parking is $9, which is absolutely worth the exploration and interaction you get inside.
I haven't been here in a very long time. It's free, but I would say make a $5 donation. I was here early and enjoyed every bit of it again
Really good. Runs on donations
I had a great day here. Lots of history and folklore. From 17th century to the 21st there is some history from every period. Downstairs, a full size replica of 18th century Woodward ave. Upstairs is full of memorabilia and diorama from Detroits past. And it's free, or with a small donation.
The best family museum.
I loved this museum. As a former Detroit girl who left 31 yrs ago I was pleasantly surprised during this outing . So much history from yesterday year. A must visit.
A Great Place to learn Detroit History including about the Negro Baseball League.
Get over there as soon as you can to see the Lindell AC exhibit.
Fun field trip with my daughters 3rd grade class.
This museum does an excellent job telling the story of our city. When I was a kid, I especially enjoyed the basement, the old streets of Detroit. Decades later, the kid in me still needs to visit them every year, along with the fun exhibits (both permanent and temporary) on the floors above. It'll never be Detroit's most visited attraction, but if you're reading reviews you're already interested enough that you have to go.
We enjoy this place, we learn A lot of history.
Free museum with lots of great exhibits from the 1800s to present. Some nice interactive parts as well as things you'd typically expect at a museum. Sports, culture, inventions, and more.
Great Museum. I spent several hours and still did not see everything. Old Detroit Streets - very cool
We had are family reunion on August 3, and wanted to thank you for the wonderful job. My family loved the venue and the staff were friendly and organized. Thanks to Danail for his patience ,because I was worried about everything running smoothly. He and his staff were so gracious and courteous. Would recommend to anyone who want a unique and beautiful venue.
Awesome museum with a great history of detroit. Brought the kids and they learned a lot.
Amazing! Don't know what was better, the wedding going on downstairs or getting to wander around the museum. Great venue!
This place is absolutely amazing! I'm from Littleton Colorado and the other day my boyfriend who's from Detroit and I went to this Museum! I didn't want to leave LOL the lower level was my absolute favorite! There's real cobblestone and antiques and so much history! Seeing all the old shops and items really was intriguing!! I highly recommend this place! I can't believe they don't charge an entry fee! I was blown away by everything I learned walking through this Museum! Detroit is truly an amazing place with an amazing history!
Interesting, different place to have a wedding. Very accommodating.
Jazz in the streets of old Detroit Charles and Gwen Scales are fabulous!
This museum is excellent for visitors of all ages and it is free. We just paid $ 7 for parking. The displays offer a wealth of information about Detroit's history as well as the surrounding areas. Did you know that the museum's collection contains over 250,000 precious artifacts. We loved the movies that were located all throughout the museum. They were not too long and to the point. Benches are available for those who like to sit. You can take the stairs or elevator to visit all 3 floors. There are various displays and play areas for children. The lower level looks like an old village with shops and an awesome train display. The trains move and you get the accompanying sounds make it all look real. The museum does accept donations. We will definitely go back, especially with visitors from out of town.
Good place too know the detroit history.
Needs more room
Love this place, I love coming here with family and friends. Great place to check out
Went for a special event and was amazed at all the great displays of history they had to exhibit. This place does a great job of showing the significance of Detroit.
Awesome to learn about the history of this great city. Excellent and knowledgeable staff that were able to answer all our questions. Make sure to check out the gift shop!
AARP sponsored Grandparents Day was great. Really enjoyed it with my grandson, daughter and my husband.
Been there twice and would go back again.Great place to learn the history of Detroit. Ms. Madelyn Porter teaches about the Underground Railroad to students that visit there and she is great!!
I went for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Program. Parking was free due to holiday.
Very nice friendly staff
This place is awesome. It features some really cool exhibits on Detroit's history, everything from a real-life recreation of a street long ago, to a functioning automobile body drop from the old Clark Street Cadillac plant. There is also an interactive model train display in the basement. On some weekends, they also screen documentary films about the city's history. And best of all, admission is free! All the standard exhibits, changing exhibits, and documentaries can be accessed and viewed free of charge. This is truly Detroit's most underrated attraction, a must-see for anyone visiting the area.
The Reynolds wedding was nice
Love this place! Learn the great history of Detroit in a well laid-out, thoughtful displays.. all for just your donation
Great museum! Lots of Detroit history. Self- paced. Paid parking is convenient.
Wow very high quality exhibits. Very impressed.
A city treasure! The museum is full of fun facts about the City of Detroit. A great stop for groups or solo. Not sure what the stipulations are but as a Detroit resident admission was FREE.
3 stars cause it's free. But it's not a very fascinating museum.
Very interesting and well layed out!
Great place for the kids to learn about Detroit history.
Went for an event and loved the cobblestone streets full of so much history. The Detroit cultural center is the cities true gem.
An amazing Museum. "Old Detroit" downstairs is phenomenal. Enjoyment abounds.
Fantastic for a weekend day with family when there is bad weather and it’s fascinating what you find when you enter.
One of my favorite childhood places. Exhibits have finally changed, but still a great place to learn about Detroit history!
Great place to visit. It has really improved over the years and much to see for a voluntary donation.
A great museum with plenty of Detroit and Michigan history. A must for those looking to educate themselves with Michigan's past. Even if your a local you will find some interesting facts which you may or may not know. Located in the heart of Detroit it is fitting to have a museum dedicated to its roots. Please donate as much as you can, you will not be disappointed.
Great Place
Very informative. Peter, docent of trains display is so full of not only transportation knowledge, but of Detroit and Michigan, we talked to him for at least an hour. Only reason we left him was to leave before they locked us in.
This museum deserves more attention because it is so well done. My favorite part is the old Detroit streets on the lower floor, which brings you back to the 20th century.
This is a must stop in Detroit. Detroit Historical is free to the public but donations are recommended. It is easy to stop and read all the information in the museum and you could spend 2 hours getting easily.
This is one of the best museums I've ever been to. There is so much to see and it's well put together. In the basement is a recreation of an 1840s town. There is also a really fun train display. There's a lot of information on how cars are made and the history of cars. Also, sports bootlegging, skyscrapers, and all kinds of things about Detroit There is also a civil rights display that is excellent! This is a museum that is well worth your time!!
Learning experience about the city of Detroit
Been visiting the Detroit Historical Museum for over 40 years, surprised to see that after all of these years they are still offering FREE ADMISSION, visited yesterday and although a little disappointed by the automobile display, it was still a great time and the basement exhibit the streets of Detroit brought back floods of childhood memories. Im so glad the Detroit Historical Museum stood the test of time and made it through the years. I remember them struggling during the 80s. Please be sure to give a donation to help out with ooerating costs.
Nice free experience to learn more about history that is not covered in school.
Poise fashion show was amazing. #anthonytoney
Lots more information than expected. Never realized how important Detroit is to the world not just because of vehicles, but because of music and the hub to freedom of the slaves to Canada.
Great place to visit with family. Make sure you allow enough tine to see everything.
This place is great. I come to Detroit every year for NAIAS and I like to see at least one site each time I'm here and the Detroit Historical Museum is hands down one of the best places I've been in Detroit.
So nice and free
Free fun!
Very interesting place to visit. They have a lot of old detroit history, things you didn't even know happened in your home town! The 1800's were my favorite. They operate as a donation only so make sure to donate to keep it "free"
Very nice. I wish there were actors walking in the area to give some facts about back then.
Probably often over-looked venue full of interesting historical pieces and fun Detroit pop culture. Also includes lovely dusky street of "Old Detroit, where you can walk down the cobblestone streets and go into some of the old buildings. Entrance is free. Pay for parking.
Underrated museum! Free of charge! Gives an excellent account of the history of Detroit and the impact it had on the whole United States!
Amazing museum...1st time tgere. Gotta go back...so much to see. Truly a gem of Detroit
Wonderful place to view history.
My niece and I had a great time!
Took a GS troop for a special program on Detroit's french roots. Fantastic!
Wonderful place to take your kids. For free too?! You can't beat it. Awesome antiques and lots to be learned.
This is a hidden jewel a must visit.
I visited this place because this is where my husband's company held their holiday party. Parking was easy. I'd never been there before, but it was still quite nice. If you enjoy history, you'll enjoy a visit to this place. They have models and replicas, lots of pictures, and even some hands on things you can do.
It was ok but we saw everything so quickly
Ok place for kids. Make sure all the displays are open before you go.
Very good place to learn a lot of the history in this town. Many relics are on display, the staff is knowledgeable and there is plenty of information on the walls, and videos. A guided tour is highly recommended, the establishment is donation based, so no entry fee, but we always donate, other wise we wouldn't have these things to appreciate.
Lots to see and learn.
Great place for local Detroit history.
Detroit Historical Society is a wonderful place to go to soak up Detroit's story by being surrounded by artifacts that show off it's importance to the area and to the country. The exhibits are awesome and interesting. Plus it's a great place to hold events.
Loved it, didn't realized Detroit had that much history
My wife and I took the day off work to go museum hopping in Detroit and our first stop was the historical museum; I hadn't been there in 20 years and my wife had never been. It was closed. No explanation, no indication on their website, just a paper sign taped to the front door. One of the things that makes a city great is its dedication to culture and the arts, i.e. museums. When they're allowed to randomly close for no apparent reason it tells people that Detroit is indeed the festering stinkhole that the rest of the world already thinks it is. Not only that, but the only parking garage in the area was also closed to the public (again, no apparent reason) and the only parking spot we could find had a 2-hour limit. We came out 2 hours and 15 minutes later to find a $45 parking ticket on our window. NOTHING else in Detroit works that efficiently, but they're on it like stink on poop if there's an opportunity to fleece the public. You stay classy, Detroit!
Lots to see about Detroit's history in Old Detroit. Fun to look in the shops of yesteryears and experience what it was like. The train exhibit is fascinating especially for the children as they can push buttons and control the workings of the train village.
This museum is FANTASTIC....Approached from the Detroit River going up Woodward Avenue...one of the longest roads in America, you will be amazed by the transformation down town. I remember coming to the Historical Museum in the 1950's as a child and bring my kids here in the 1980's...Yesterday I spent the day there with my grandkids! It is such a treat to see this museum in all its glorious restoration. The exhibits and educational and surprisingly well laid out. There is something for everyone. History of the Native American tribes in the region...early settlers to Michigan...industry and the war effort and of course the 197 riots. Entrance is FREE. Parking in Museum gated lot is $9. You can also donate at the door. Well worth the 3.5 hours it will take to see all
great place to learn about the history of Detroit!
Had a wonderful time with my granddaughter at the Halloween event at the museum
Very well kept museum. Nice location. Doesn't take too long to get through. Interactive for kids, educational for adults
Sam, our tour guide, was excellent. He really made the '67 "event" come alive.
What a wonderful place full of history and for free!! If you go through detroit and have time its a great place
It’s pay what you want, but strongly consider donating at a charitable rate. I absolutely love this museum, ended up dragging every single one of my family and friends here eventually, always had a blast. If you’re from out of town and need an easy stop to brush up on Detroit history, this is by far your best bet.
It was amazing. Great place to take the kids or to go to get to know your city!
Very interesting displays during my visit.
It's great and free
this is a free museum that is just wonderful
For a complete history of Detroit. Visit the museum. You will not be disappointed.
It was a great experience. Gives you a real look into the history of Detroit. Some happy and some sad!
Definitely a favorite! It's near the DIA (another great museum), and what's even better is that's it's free. This place takes a trip through the history of Detroit accurately, and has a very unique lower level (I won't spoil it, see for yourself! Trust me, it's truly amazing.). This museum is always so clean, the staff is always friendly, and it's for everyone of every age.
I enjoyed the tour of the churches. Tasty box lunch. What I didn't like was at the end of the tour one of the male your guides were very rude to me. The guide requested my paper review of the tour. I told him I really enjoyed the tour and they did a great job, and he said to me very abruptly, "I didn't ask that I asked you for your paper review of the tour". This man was a senior citizen.
What a gem. it's a nice tour of Detroit history that can be had in a couple hours or less.
My kiddos ages 5 and 2 love coming here to see the trains and sit in the Model T! The models of early Detroit are also great and we love exposing then to the history of this great City. Highly recommend. It's free, but there's a donation box of you like! The volunteers are always super friendly and it's a fun place to roam around, especially down in the streets of Detroit.
A nice history lesson
I always take my family here, it's an awesome place to have an experience and to learn about the history of Detroit. I mean if you live here and you haven't been there yet, then you have to definitely experience it, you won't be disappointed at all. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Has awesome parking too. my family and me are definitely going to be visiting this place numerous times in the future.
Loved this place as a kid and now enjoy taking my 3 children here! Its a beautiful place to learn about the history of Detroit!
What a beautiful building . We had a company private party here and it was just lovely. Whole building all by our self's . History is amazing
Kind free museum with friendly staff they had refreshments that had really nice lemonade. Museum was near empty which was nice because you could experience these exhibits without screaming children. I know they want to learn too but it's nice to be able to explore and learn with the complete quiet atmosphere
Loved it. I wish I went sooner.
Well done! Very enjoyable.
One of my favorite spots in Detroit. Exhibits are informative and fun plus it's FREE. Why wouldn't you go?
I really liked visiting this museum. I didn't know much about Detroit's history until I came here. Lots of great history to learn about, nice exhibits and friendly guides. It's free too so there's no excuse not to go check it out.
A place you must visit. I went with co workers and the scavenger hunt for history information was fun.
Detroit Historical Museums is one of my favorite museums! This museum served as a beautiful venue for my clients Detroit Themed wedding ceremony and reception! I loved Coordinating and decorating the “Streets” for their wedding.l! It was an amazing night, the staff there is great!
We take the grands every year and do all three. Historical, art and library. They remember alcalll of it and we have alot of memories. We also try to squeeze in the science too. Parking is not free and its a 40.00 ticket.
It takes a lot of time to appreciate everything there
We really enjoyed it.
Awesome people and awesome exhibits
What an incredible community resource. I love the displays, exhibits, especially the frontier Detroit areas. I think the downstairs area with the street and different eras of the city was beautifully put together, I think it would be a great place for a prom or something. Also the exhibit on the riot was powerful. Would go again. A quick and educational must see.
Great place to learn Detroit history. Things were organized in chronological order. Things suggested to be improved are more details describing scenes (e.g. what caused incidences and what was happening at the mean time in the nation. Some voice records were barely hearable. Looking forward to see the city revival as its flag stands for.
Decent museum. Fun to visit from time to time. A lot of interesting history that leaves out a lot of details of corruption, racism, and inequality within the city but that's not surprising.
Great find and insight full!
Neat museum make sure you see everything there
Nice wine tasting event
It was real experimental and you could explore a nice adventures
Amazing so great I love it try it I bet you. You will love it
The Motown Review here was excellent. I enjoyed seeing the Supremes and many, many other entertainers on the Ed Sullivan show. The tribute was exciting to watch.
I should have visited years ago. Nice facility. Lots of great info and exhibits. Parking is a problem on site.
Love this museum, plenty detailed information about the city. I highly recommend if you want to learn about Detorit.
This is a very large well done museum containing a recreated historical town and numerous other displays on Detroit's history. This may be the best city history museum that I have ever visited. The museum covers both the good and bad times in Detroit's history. I recommend seeing this when in Detroit.
Good exhibits. Streamline car now on exhibit. Lindel AC exhibit in the lower level. International Institute exhibit on the 2nd floor.
Love this place!!! Free admission and a wonderful grouping of Detroit history. Anyone traveling to Detroit should make a stop.
Very cool museum. Great information on things I never knew about Detroit. Detailed exhibits...well worth visiting!
Great history lesson about Detroit through 1900.
Will visit again. . Enjoyed it new mural being installed. Free. Good affordable souvenirs.
We really enjoyed the Motown 25th Anniversary exhibit presented by the Detroit Historical Museum in January 2019. Job well done.
While DIA and Charles H Wright Museum garner so much attention as they should. The Detroit Historical Museum should not be overlooked. It has fabulous exhibits, an informative staff who will go out of the way to assist you and by far one of the most interactive museums one could visit. Definitely a good family outing, a learning adventure and traveling the streets of Old Detroit is more than enough to brighten the mood of anyone.
Great place to walk around to experience historical Detroit
The exhibit provided much information about the 1967 events. Interactive exhibits were especially helpful.
We enjoyed the museum. Gives a lot of good information about the history of Detroit. Nice artifacts.
The tour guide was very knowledgeable and informative.
This place is awesome!
Best interactive mueseum ever
Super cool slice of history.
Such an amazing museum with three floors that are well-laid out with beautiful, informative and interactive displays. You need at least three hours to see everything there. Such an educational place to bring your family! My kids loved it! The staff are all so friendly and helpful too! You don’t want to miss this place!!
I really enjoyed the glimpse of past Detroit. I was born and raised in the city, but I found out a few things I didn't know. A enjoyable, educational and inexpensive (by donation) place.
This place might be one of Detroit great hidden little gems. Couldn't believe it was free of cost eith three floors, history at every turn and wasn't even packed on a sunday. You can see and learn where Detroit started and how its grown to such an amazing place. From the literal start to booming industry, and don't forget the sports and music. If your trying to take in Detroit on a budget you have to make a stop at the historical society!
Love the trains. I have loved them for 39 years now
Great...LOT of Detroit history!
Me and girlfriend and kids really enjoyed the time their
This museum offers a great tour of Detroit’s history from early 1900s till present. It’s also free and is a great pastime for anyone looking to learn about Detroit’s culture, music, automotive industry etc.
The is a hidden gem that not many people know about. Be sure to visit the historic town in the basement and the giant model train set up.
It's a great free museum
Always an awesome spot.
I love the variety of activities and the excellent exhibits. I attend the Thanksgiving Parade event every year, and I can't wait to attend this year!
